Abstract:A double pants decomposition of a 2-dimensional surface is a collection of two pants decomposition of this surface introduced in arXiv:1005.0073v2. There are two natural operations acting on double pants decompositions: flips and handle twists. It is shown in arXiv:1005.0073v2 that the groupoid generated by flips and handle twists acts transitively on admissible double pants decompositions where the class of admissible decompositions has a natural topological and combinatorial description. In this paper, we label the curves of double pants decompositions and show that for all but one surfaces the same groupoid acts transitively on all labeled admissible double pants decompositions. The only exclusion is a sphere with two handles, where the groupoid has 15 orbits.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize the notion of regular homotopy of immersions of a closed connected n-manifold into R^{2n-1} to locally generic mappings. The main result is that if n=2 then two mappings with singularities are regularly homotopic if and only if they have the same number of cross-cap (or Whitney-umbrella) singularities. As an application, we get a description of the path-components of the space of those immersions of a surface into R^4 whose projections into R^3 are locally generic.

The Pants Graph of a Rose

Abstract:We introduce the concept of a pants decomposition for a rose, where a rose is defined as a wedge sum of finitely many circles, and construct the corresponding pants graph of a rose. A pants decomposition of a rose leads to the formation of a simplicial graph, referred to as the pants graph of a rose, consisting of all possible pants decompositions. Recall that the outer automorphism group of a free group is isomorphic to the group of homotopy classes of homotopy equivalences of a rose. The natural isometric action of this group on the pants graph induces a coarsely Lipschitz orbit map. Additionally, we construct a coarsely Lipschitz map from the pants graph to the free splitting complex. These results imply that the pants graph of a rose is both connected and unbounded.

Abstract:An infinite-type surface $\Sigma$ is of type $\mathcal{S}$ if it has an isolated puncture $p$ and admits shift maps. This includes all infinite-type surfaces with an isolated puncture outside of two sporadic classes. Given such a surface, we construct an infinite family of intrinsically infinite-type mapping classes that act loxodromically on the relative arc graph $\mathcal{A}(\Sigma, p)$. J. Bavard produced such an element for the plane minus a Cantor set, and our result gives the first examples of such mapping classes for all other surfaces of type $\mathcal{S}$. The elements we construct are the composition of three shift maps on $\Sigma$, and we give an alternate characterization of these elements as a composition of a pseudo-Anosov on a finite-type subsurface of $\Sigma$ and a standard shift map. We then explicitly find their limit points on the boundary of $\mathcal{A}(\Sigma,p)$ and their limiting geodesic laminations. Finally, we show that these infinite-type elements can be used to prove that Map$(\Sigma,p)$ has an infinite-dimensional space of quasimorphisms.

Abstract:Let $S$ and $S'$ be orientable finite-type surfaces of genus $g\geq 4$ and $g'$, respectively. We prove that every multitwist-preserving map between pure mapping class groups $\text{PMap}(S)\to \text{PMap}(S')$ is induced by a multi-embedding. As an application, we classify all homomorphisms $\text{PMap}(S)\to \text{PMap}(S')$ for $g\geq 4$ and $g' \leq 6\cdot 2^{g-4}$.

Abstract:Let $\varphi:F_1\to F_2$ be an injective morphism of free groups. If $\varphi$ is geometric (i.e. induced by an inclusion of oriented compact connected surfaces with nonempty boundary), then we show that $\varphi$ is an isometric embedding for stable commutator length. More generally, we show that if $T$ is a subsurface of an oriented compact (possibly closed) connected surface $S$, and $c$ is an integral $1$-chain on $\pi_1T$, then there is an isometric embedding $H_2(T,c)\to H_2(S,c)$ for the relative Gromov seminorm. Those statements are proved by finding an appropriate standard form for admissible surfaces and showing that, under the right homology vanishing conditions, such an admissible surface in $S$ for a chain in $T$ is in fact an admissible surface in $T$.

Interplay of Cubic Graphs and Simplicial Surfaces

Abstract:Simplicial surfaces describe the incidence relations between vertices, edges and faces of triangulated 2-dimensional manifolds in a purely combinatorial way. By considering only the incidences of edges and faces, simplicial surfaces are closely related to cubic graphs. In this paper we investigate how properties of simplicial surfaces and cubic graphs can be transferred to each other. Furthermore, we study embeddings of cubic graphs on simplicial surfaces and how they are connected to strong graph embeddings. For instance, 3-connected cubic planar graphs are uniquely embeddable on simplicial spheres, which is a direct consequence of Whitney's embedding theorem. Moreover, 3-connected cubic planar graphs can also be embedded on simplicial surfaces of higher genus. We characterise the properties that a simplicial sphere must possess such that the cubic graph describing its edge-face incidence relation can be embedded on a simplicial surface of non-negative Euler characteristic.

An FPT algorithm for the embeddability of graphs into two-dimensional simplicial complexes

Abstract:We consider the embeddability problem of a graph G into a two-dimensional simplicial complex C: Given G and C, decide whether G admits a topological embedding into C. The problem is NP-hard, even in the restricted case where C is homeomorphic to a surface. We prove that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable in the size of the two-dimensional complex, by providing an O(2^{poly(c)}.n^2)-time algorithm. Moreover, we show that several known problems reduce to this one, such as the crossing number and the planarity number problems, and, under some additional conditions, the embedding extension problem. Our approach is to reduce to the case where G has bounded branchwidth via an irrelevant vertex method, and to apply dynamic programming. We do not rely on any component of the existing linear-time algorithms for embedding graphs on a fixed surface, but only on algorithms from graph minor theory.

Abstract:The notion of Laplacian of a graph can be generalized to simplicial complexes and hypergraphs, and contains information on the topology of these structures. Even for a graph, the consideration of associated simplicial complexes is interesting to understand its shape. Whereas the Laplacian of a graph has a simple probabilistic interpretation as the generator of a continuous time Markov chain on the graph, things are not so direct when considering simplicial complexes. We define here new Markov chains on simplicial complexes. For a given order~$k$, the state space is the set of $k$-cycles that are chains of $k$-simplexes with null boundary. This new framework is a natural generalization of the canonical Markov chains on graphs. We show that the generator of our Markov chain is the upper Laplacian defined in the context of algebraic topology for discrete structure. We establish several key properties of this new process: in particular, when the number of vertices is finite, the Markov chain is positive recurrent. This result is not trivial, since the cycles can loop over themselves an unbounded number of times. We study the diffusive limits when the simplicial complexes under scrutiny are a sequence of ever refining triangulations of the flat torus. Using the analogy between singular and Hodge homologies, we express this limit as valued in the set of currents. The proof of tightness and the identification of the limiting martingale problem make use of the flat norm and carefully controls of the error terms in the convergence of the generator. Uniqueness of the solution to the martingale problem is left open. An application to hole detection is carried.

Abstract:Let S be any orientable surface of infinite genus with a finite number of boundary components. In this work we consider the curve complex C(S), the nonseparating curve complex N(S) and the Schmutz graph G(S) of S. When all the topological ends of S carry genus, we show that all elements in the automorphism groups Aut(C(S)), Aut(N(S)) and Aut(G(S)) are geometric, i.e. these groups are naturally isomorphic to the extended mapping class group MCG*(S) of the infinite surface S. Finally, we study rigidity phenomena within Aut(C(S)) and Aut(N(S))

Slit-slide-sew bijections for bipartite and quasibipartite plane maps

Abstract:We unify and extend previous bijections on plane quadrangulations to bipartite and quasibipartite plane maps. Starting from a bipartite plane map with a distinguished edge and two distinguished corners (in the same face or in two different faces), we build a new plane map with a distinguished vertex and two distinguished half-edges directed toward the vertex. The faces of the new map have the same degree as those of the original map, except at the locations of the distinguished corners, where each receives an extra degree. The idea behind this bijection is to build a path from the distinguished elements, slit the map along it, and sew back after sliding by one unit, thus mildly modifying the structure of the map at the extremities of the sliding path. This bijection provides a sampling algorithm for uniform maps with prescribed face degrees and allow to recover Tutte's famous counting formula for bipartite and quasibipartite plane maps. In addition, we explain how to decompose the previous bijection into two more elementary ones, which each transfer a degree from one face of the map to another face. In particular, these transfer bijections are simpler to manipulate than the previous one and this point of view simplifies the proofs.

Abstract:Given any (not necessarily connected) combinatorial finite graph and any compact smooth $6$-manifold $M^6$ with the third Betti number $b_3\not=0$, we construct a calibrated 3-dimensional homologically area minimizing surface on $M$ equipped in a smooth metric $g$, so that the singular set of the surface is precisely an embedding of this finite graph. Moreover, the calibration form near the singular set is a smoothly $GL(6,\mathbb{R})$ twisted special Lagrangian form. The constructions are based on some unpublished ideas of Professor Camillo De Lellis and Professor Robert Bryant.

Abstract:Let $\pi:{\mathbb R}^n \to {\mathbb R}^d$ be any linear projection, let $A$ be the image of the standard basis. Motivated by Postnikov's study of postitive Grassmannians via plabic graphs and Galashin's connection of plabic graphs to slices of zonotopal tilings of 3-dimensional cyclic zonotopes, we study the poset of subdivisions induced by the restriction of $\pi$ to the $k$-th hypersimplex, for $k=1,\dots,n-1$. We show that: - For arbitrary $A$ and for $k\le d+1$, the corresponding fiber polytope $\mathcal F^{(k)}(A)$ is normally isomorphic to the Minkowski sum of the secondary polytopes of all subsets of $A$ of size $\max\{d+2,n-k+1\}$. - When $A={\mathbf P}_n$ is the vertex set of an $n$-gon, we answer the Baues question in the positive: the inclusion of the poset of $\pi$-coherent subdivisions into the poset of all $\pi$-induced subdivisions is a homotopy equivalence. - When $A=\mathbf{C}(n,d)$ is the vertex set of a cyclic $d$-polytope with $d$ odd and any $n \ge d+3$, there are non-lifting (and even more so, non-separated) $\pi$-induced subdivisions for $k=2$.

On high genus extensions of Negami's conjecture

Abstract:Negami's famous planar cover conjecture is equivalent to the statement that a connected graph can be embedded in the projective plane if and only if it has a projective planar cover. In 1999, Hliněný proposed extending this conjecture to higher genus non-orientable surfaces. In this paper, we put forward a natural extension that encompasses orientable surfaces as well; for every compact surface $\Sigma$, a connected graph $G$ has a finite cover embeddable in $\Sigma$ if and only if $G$ is embeddable in a surface covered by $\Sigma$. As evidence toward this, we prove that for every surface $\Sigma$, the connected graphs with a finite cover embeddable in $\Sigma$ have bounded Euler genus. Moreover, we show that these extensions of Negami's conjecture are decidable for every compact surface of sufficiently large Euler genus, surpassing what is known for Negami's original conjecture. We also prove the natural analogue for countable graphs embeddable into a compact (orientable) surface. More precisely, we prove that a connected countable graph $G$ has a finite ply cover that embeds into a compact (orientable) surface if and only if $G$ embeds into a compact (orientable) surface. Our most general theorem, from which these results are derived, is that there is a constant $c>0$ such that for every surface $\Sigma$, there exists a decreasing function $p_\Sigma:\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$ with $\lim_{g\to \infty}p_\Sigma(g) =0$ such that every finite cover embeddable in $\Sigma$ of any connected graph with Euler genus $g\ge c$ has ply at most $p_\Sigma(g)$.

Abstract:For any rigid space over a perfectoid extension of $\mathbb Q_p$ that admits a liftable smooth formal model, we construct an isomorphism between the moduli stacks of Hitchin-small Higgs bundles and Hitchin-small v-vector bundles. This constitutes a moduli-theoretic improvement of the small $p$-adic Simpson correspondence of Faltings, Abbes-Gros, Tsuji and Wang. Our construction is based on the Hodge-Tate stack of Bhatt-Lurie. We also prove an analogous correspondence in the arithmetic setting of rigid spaces of good reduction over $p$-adic fields.

Abstract:The complex of domains $D(S)$ is a geometric tool with a very rich simplicial structure, it contains the curve complex $C(S)$ as a simplicial subcomplex. In this paper we shall regard it as a metric space, endowed with the metric which makes each simplex Euclidean with edges of length 1, and we shall discuss its coarse geometry. We prove that for every subcomplex $\Delta(S)$ of $D(S)$ which contains the curve complex $C(S)$, the natural simplicial inclusion $C(S) \to \Delta(S)$ is an isometric embedding and a quasi-isometry. We prove that, except a few cases, the arc complex $A(S)$ is quasi-isometric to the subcomplex $P_\partial(S)$ of $D(S)$ spanned by the vertices which are peripheral pair of pants, and we prove that the simplicial inclusion $P_\partial(S) \to D(S)$ is a quasi-isometric embedding if and only if $S$ has genus 0. We then apply these results to the arc and curve complex $AC(S)$. We give a new proof of the fact that $AC(S)$ is quasi-isometric to $C(S)$, and we discuss the metric properties of the simplicial inclusion $A(S) \to AC(S)$.
