Abstract:We show that an immersed thrice-punctured sphere in a cusped orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold is either embedded or has a single clasp in a manifold obtained by hyperbolic Dehn filling on a cusp of the Whitehead link complement.

Abstract:Any profinite isomorphism between two cusped finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds carries profinite isomorphisms between their Dehn fillings. With this observation, we prove that some cusped finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds are profinitely rigid among all compact, orientable 3-manifolds, through detecting their exceptional Dehn fillings. In addition, we improved a criteria for profinite rigidity of a hyperbolic knot complement or a hyperbolic-type satellite knot complement among compact, orientable 3-manifolds, through examining its characterising slopes. We obtain the following profinitely rigid examples: the complement of the Whitehead link, Whitehead sister link, $\frac{3}{10}$ two-bridge link; specific surgeries on one component of these links; the complement of (full) twist knots $\mathcal{K}_n$, Eudave-Muñoz knots $K(3,1,n,0)$, Pretzel knots $P(-3,3,2n+1)$, $5_2$ knot; the Berge manifold, and many more.

Abstract:We consider the existence of simple closed geodesics or "geodesic knots" in finite volume orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Previous results show that at least one geodesic knot always exists [Bull. London Math. Soc. 31(1) (1999) 81-86], and that certain arithmetic manifolds contain infinitely many geodesic knots [J. Diff. Geom. 38 (1993) 545-558], [Experimental Mathematics 10(3) (2001) 419-436]. In this paper we show that all cusped orientable finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds contain infinitely many geodesic knots. Our proof is constructive, and the infinite family of geodesic knots produced approach a limiting infinite simple geodesic in the manifold.

Abstract:The waist size of a cusp in an orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold is the length of the shortest nontrivial curve generated by a parabolic isometry in the maximal cusp boundary. Previously, it was shown that the smallest possible waist size, which is 1, is realized only by the cusp in the figure-eight knot complement. In this paper, it is proved that the next two smallest waist sizes are realized uniquely for the cusps in the $5_2$ knot complement and the manifold obtained by (2,1)-surgery on the Whitehead link. One application is an improvement on the universal upper bound for the length of an unknotting tunnel in a 2-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold.

Hyperbolicity constants for pants and relative pants graphs

Abstract:The pants graph has proved to be influential in understanding 3-manifolds concretely. This stems from a quasi-isometry between the pants graph and the Teichmüller space with the Weil-Petersson metric. Currently, all estimates on the quasi-isometry constants are dependent on the surface in an undiscovered way. This paper starts effectivising some constants which begins the understanding how relevant constants change based on the surface. We do this by studying the hyperbolicity constant of the pants graph for the five-punctured sphere and the twice punctured torus. The hyperbolicity constant of the relative pants graph for complexity 3 surfaces is also calculated. Note, for higher complexity surfaces, the pants graph is not hyperbolic or even strongly relatively hyperbolic.

Abstract:We realize every closed flat 3-manifold as a cusp section of a complete, finite-volume hyperbolic 4-manifold whose symmetry group acts transitively on the set of cusps. Moreover, for every such 3-manifold, a dense subset of its flat metrics can be realized as cusp sections of a cusp-transitive 4-manifold. Finally, we prove that there are a lot of 4-manifolds with pairwise isometric cusps, for any given cusp type.

Abstract:We show that every smooth, orientable, closed, connected 4-manifold can be represented by a loop in the pants complex. We use this representation, together with the fact that the pants complex is simply connected, to provide an elementary proof that such 4-manifolds are smoothly cobordant to $\coprod_m \mathbb{C}P^2 \coprod_n \bar{\mathbb{C}P}^2$. We also use this association to give information about the structure of the pants complex. Namely, given a loop in the pants complex, $L$, which bounds a disk, $D$, we show that the signature of the 4-manifold associated to $L$ gives a lower bound on the number of triangles in $D$.

Abstract:We introduce a coarse perspective on relations of the $SU(2)$-Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev TQFT, the Weil-Petersson geometry of the Teichmüller space, and volumes of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Using data from the asymptotic expansions of the curve operators in the skein theoretic version of the $SU(2)$-TQFT, we define the quantum intersection number between pants decompositions of a closed surface. We show that the quantum intersection number admits two sided bounds in terms of the geometric intersection number and we use it to obtain a metric on the pants graph of surfaces. Using work of Brock we show that the pants graph equipped with this metric is quasi-isometric to the Teichmüller space with the Weil-Petersson metric and that the translation length of our metric provides two sided linear bounds on the volume of hyperbolic fibered manifolds. We briefly discuss how these relations are interpeted from the view point of $SU(2)$-character varieties of 3-manifolds. We also obtain a characterization of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes in terms of asymptotics of the quantum intersection number under iteration in the mapping class group and relate these asymptotics with stretch factors. We also discuss how these results fit with a conjecture of Andersen, Masbaum and Ueno about quantum representations of mapping class groups.

Abstract:In this paper, it is shown that every closed hyperbolic 3-manifold contains an immersed quasi-Fuchsian closed subsurface of odd Euler characteristic. The construction adopts the good pants method, and the primary new ingredient is an enhanced version of the connection principle, which allows one to connect any two frames with a path of frames in a prescribed relative homology class of the frame bundle. The existence result is applied to show that every uniform lattice of $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ admits an exhausting nested sequence of sublattices with exponential homological torsion growth. However, the constructed sublattices are not normal in general.

Abstract:The minimal volume of orientable hyperbolic manifolds with a given number of cusps has been found for $0,1,2,4$ cusps, while the minimal volume of 3-cusped orientable hyperbolic manifolds remains unknown. By using guts in sutured manifolds and pared manifolds, we are able to show that for an orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with 3 cusps such that every second homology class is libroid, its volume is at least $5.49\ldots = 6 \times $Catalan's constant.

Abstract:We introduce a class of cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds that we call mixed-platonic, composed of regular ideal hyperbolic polyhedra of more than one type, which includes certain previously-known examples. We establish basic facts about mixed-platonic manifolds which allow us to conclude, among other things, that there is no mixed-platonic hyperbolic knot complement with hidden symmetries.

Abstract:We show the 3-manifold at infinity of the complex hyperbolic triangle group $\Delta_{3,\infty,\infty;\infty}$ is the three-cusped "magic" 3-manifold $6_1^3$. We also show the 3-manifold at infinity of the complex hyperbolic triangle group $\Delta_{3,4,\infty;\infty}$ is the two-cusped 3-manifold $m295$ in the Snappy Census, which is a 3-manifold obtained by Dehn filling on one cusp of $6_1^3$. In particular, hyperbolic 3-manifolds $6_1^3$ and $m295$ admit spherical CR uniformizations. These results support our conjecture that the 3-manifold at infinity of the complex hyperbolic triangle group $\Delta_{3,n,m;\infty}$ is the one-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold from the "magic" $6_1^3$ via Dehn fillings with filling slopes $(n-2)$ and $(m-2)$ on the first two cusps of it.

Abstract:Given a fibred hyperbolic 3-manifold with boundary, we coarsely relate the Euclidean geometry of its cusps to the classical fractional Dehn twist coefficient of its monodromy. This result fits into the broader programme of coarsely describing the geometry of a hyperbolic 3-manifold via combinatorial data. We are thus able to study the hyperbolic geometry of certain fibred 3-manifolds under Dehn filling. For example, we find coarse volume estimates for sufficiently twisted braid closures in terms of their braid words. We also prove that for any open book decomposition of a fixed manifold (that is not a lens space or solid torus) with fibre of fixed Euler characteristic the fractional Dehn twist coefficient in some boundary component is uniformly bounded. Finally, we obtain applications to contact topology. We give a geometric criterion on the binding of an open book decomposition for the corresponding contact structure in a hyperbolic 3-manifold to be tight.

Also, given a connected orientable topological surface of infinite type with compact boundary components, we construct a complete hyperbolic metric on the surface that has bounded geometry but does not admit a bounded pants decomposition.

Abstract:We show that the hyperbolic structure on a closed, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifold can be constructed from a solution to the hyperbolic gluing equations using any triangulation with essential edges. The key ingredients in the proof are Thurston's spinning construction and a volume rigidity result attributed by Dunfield to Thurston, Gromov and Goldman. As an application, we show that this gives a new algorithm to detect hyperbolic structures on closed 3-manifolds.
Detection of incompressible surfaces in hyperbolic punctured torus bundles

Abstract:Culler and Shalen, and later Yoshida, give ways to construct incompressible surfaces in 3-manifolds from ideal points of the character and deformation varieties, respectively. We work in the case of hyperbolic punctured torus bundles, for which the incompressible surfaces were classified by Floyd and Hatcher, and independently by Culler, Jaco and Rubinstein. We convert non fiber incompressible surfaces from their form to the form output by Yoshida’s construction, and run his construction backwards to give (for non semi-fibers, which we identify) the data needed to construct ideal points of the deformation variety corresponding to those surfaces via Yoshida’s construction. We use a result of Tillmann to show that the same incompressible surfaces can be obtained from an ideal point of the character variety via the Culler-Shalen construction. In particular this shows that all boundary slopes of non fiber and non semi-fiber incompressible surfaces in hyperbolic punctured torus bundles are strongly detected.

Abstract:We prove a finiteness result for the $\partial$-patterned guts decomposition of all 3-manifolds obtained by splitting a given orientable, irreducible and $\partial$-irreducible 3-manifold along a closed incompressible surface. Then using the Thurston norm, we deduce that the JSJ-pieces of all 3-manifolds dominated by a given compact 3-manifold belong, up to homeomorphism, to a finite collection of compact 3-manifolds. We show also that any closed orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitely many integral homology spheres and any compact 3-manifolds orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitely many exterior of knots in $S^3$.

Up to Möbius transformations, all geodesics with respect to the Lorentz metric g = Re(h) on ${\mathbb{Q}^3}$ are determined to form a one-parameter family of circles on a helicoid in a space form ${\mathbb{R}^3, \mathbb{H}^3}$ or ${\mathbb{S}^{3}}$, resp. We show also that any two oriented circles in ${\mathbb{S}^3}$ are connected by countably infinitely many geodesics in ${\mathbb{Q}^3}$.
Cusped hyperbolic Lagrangians as mirrors to lines in three-space

Abstract:We construct a Lagrangian in the cotangent bundle of a 3-torus whose projection to the fiber is a neighborhood of a tropical curve with a single 4-valent vertex. This Lagrangian has an isolated conical singular point, and its smooth locus is diffeomorphic to the minimally-twisted five component chain link complement, a cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold. From this singular Lagrangian, we construct an immersed Lagrangian, and determine when it is unobstructed in the wrapped Fukaya category. We show, using quilted Floer theory, that for a generic line in projective 3-space, there is a local system on this immersed Lagrangian such that the resulting object of the wrapped Fukaya category is homologically mirror to an object of the derived category supported on the line.
