Abstract:This paper represents an assessment of two different generations of TBC material including conventional yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and samarium niobate (SN: SmNbO 4 ). SN is classified among the emerging group of rare earth niobates (REN), distinguished by their exceptional mechanical and thermal characteristics when exposed to elevated temperatures. The YSZ and SN coatings were deposited using the atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) thermal deposition method. As-obtained feedstock powders and the resulting coatings were systematically characterized and compared. The results indicate that SN ceramics exhibit comparable mechanical properties to YSZ, including hardness (7.34 ± 0.62 GPa), Young's modulus (108.50 ± 6.4 GPa), and fracture toughness (1.86 ± 0.4 MPa-m 1/2 ), suggesting their potential as a viable alternative. Furthermore, SN coatings exhibit higher adhesion strength (~28.78 ± 1.8 MPa) than YSZ (~16.36 ± 2.3 MPa) coatings, leading to better layer distribution and less chance of peeling off coated layers. Fractography analysis reveals denser and more compact coatings in SN, contrasting with crack-prone boundaries and stress concentrators observed in YSZ coatings. Overall, the superior performance of plasma-sprayed SN coatings suggests its potential for next-generation thermal barrier coating materials.
