Abstract:Sun glare is one of the major environmental issues contributing to traffic crashes. Every year, many traffic crashes in the United States are attributed to sun glare. However, quantitative analysis of the influence of sun glare on traffic crashes has not been widely undertaken. This study used traffic crash narrative data for 7 years (2010–2016) from Louisiana to identify crash reports that provided evidence of drivers indicating sun glare as the primary contributing factor of the crashes. Additional geometry and traffic information was collected to identify the list of key crash-contributing factors. This study used cluster correspondence analysis to perform the data analysis. After performing several iterations, six clusters were identified that provided additional insight in relation to sun glare-related crashes. The six clusters are associated with mixed (business and residential) localities, intersection-related crashes on U.S. roadways, single-vehicle crashes on residential two-lane undivided roadways, curve-related crashes on parish roadways in residential localities, interstate-related crashes in open country localities, and curve-related crashes in open country localities. The findings of the current study can add insights to the ongoing safety analysis on sun glare-related crashes.

Abstract:Solar maculopathy is a rare retinal injury that occurs as a result of directly gazing at the sun or viewing a solar eclipse without adequate eye protection. This condition typically results in a mild-to-moderate decrease in visual acuity, accompanied by central or paracentral scotomata. Most individuals experience spontaneous recovery within a period of 1 to 6 months. However, it is important to note that certain patients may endure persistent visual acuity deficits and/or scotomata, leading to long-term impairment. This case emphasizes the crucial role of eye protection during solar eclipses and highlights the necessity for public education to prevent lasting damage. Abstract:A total solar eclipse occurred on April 8, 2024, across the United States, with obscuration rates ranging from 20–100% at different locations. We study the ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC) response to the eclipse using data from 51 ground-based GPS stations. We find a significant depletion in TEC of up to 65%, with larger depletion rates occurring along the path of totality. We also observe a time delay between the maximum TEC depletion and the time of maximum obscuration, ranging from 8 to 80 minutes, with longer delays occurring at stations with lower obscuration rates. Both time delay and TEC depletion rates are found to vary with latitude, with slightly longer delays at lower latitudes and higher TEC depletion rates at mid-latitudes. The TEC depletion rate also increased with local time, showing a higher decrement after noon compared to before. The spatiotemporal variation in TEC closely followed the eclipse's path, indicating a positive correlation with the movement of the moon's shadow. Monitoring rate of TEC change during such rare events is crucial for enhancing our understanding of ionospheric dynamics, which can be very helpful to improve the accuracy of global communication and navigation systems.

Abstract:High density meteorological observations show notable response of the atmosphere and changes in measured variables during a historic solar eclipse. A total solar eclipse traversed the continental United States on August 21, 2017. It was the first such event in 99 years and provided a rare opportunity to observe the atmospheric response from a variety of instrumented observational platforms. This paper discusses the high-quality observations collected by the Kentucky Mesonet ( www.kymesonet.org ), a research-grade meteorological and climatological observation network consisting of 72 stations and measuring air temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, solar radiation, wind speed, and wind direction. The network samples the atmosphere, for most variables, every three seconds and then calculates and records observations every five minutes. During the total solar eclipse, these observations were complemented by observations collected from three atmospheric profiling systems positioned in the path of the eclipse and operated by the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). Observational data demonstrates that solar radiation at the surface dropped from > 800 to 0 W m -2 , the air temperature decreased by about 4.5 °C and, most interestingly, a land breeze/sea breeze-type wind developed. In addition, due to the high density of observations, the network recorded a detailed representation of the spatial variation of surface meteorology. The UAH profiling system captured collapse and reformation of the planetary boundary layer and related changes during the total solar eclipse.

Satellite Visibility During the April 2024 Total Eclipse

Abstract:On 8 April 2024, tens of millions of people across North America will be able to view a total solar eclipse. Such astronomical events have been important throughout history, but with nearly 10,000 satellites in orbit, we question whether total eclipses will now reveal a sky full of satellites, fundamentally changing this experience for humanity. Using the current population of Starlink satellites, we find that the brightest satellites would be naked-eye visible in dark skies, but the high sky brightness during totality will make them undetectable to the unaided eye. Our model does not take into account the effects of chance reflections from large, flat surfaces like solar panels, which we expect will cause glints and flares that could be visible from large satellites and abandoned rocket bodies. Time-lapse all-sky imaging might reveal satellites during the eclipse.

Exposure to a solar eclipse causes neuronal death in the retina

Abstract:Background: A solar eclipse was observed in Europe on 11 August 1999. Several individuals suffered from transient or persisting retinal damage, caused by gazing at the eclipse without adequate eye protection. Retinal damage is the most serious hazard of exposure to light. but the mechanisms by which this type of exposure produces retinal damage and its cellular correlates are not yet established. We used an animal model to monitor the mechanisms of retinal damage following excessive light exposure, and in particular to study whether observation of the eclipse induces death of retinal cells. Methods: In the geographic area where the experiment was conducted, a partial (90%) solar eclipse was observed. Experimental albino rats were exposed to these eclipse conditions, and control rats were exposed to normal sunlight. Another group of control animals was exposed to the same conditions, but was provided with protective light filters of the type recommended for human use. The DNA fragmentation in retinal sections of the various groups was analysed by terminal deoxynucleotidyl-transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labelling. This analysis revealed that exposure to both normal sunlight and to the eclipse resulted in neuronal apoptosis. Immunohistochemical techniques were used to evaluate possible glial-vascular alterations. Results: Dying cells could first be detected 24 h after exposure, the largest number of which were found 6 days later in the photoreceptor layer. Control levels were attained 14 days after the exposure. Retinal ganglion cells underwent apoptosis in both groups (normal sunlight and eclipse exposure), whereas in the neuroglial cells there was an up-regulation of the intermediate filament content. The number of dying cells in both groups was greater in animals whose pupils had been dilated pharmacologically during exposure. On the other hand, the protective filters were effective in preserving the rat retinal cells from apoptosis. Conclusions: These results show, for the first time, that the cellular correlates of solar retinopathy are neuronal apoptosis accompanied by glio-vascular responses. Cellular apoptosis is an irreversible process, which could manifest itself as permanent visual impairment. The activation of non-neuronal cells, such as glial and endothelial cells, could be responsible for the more transient clinical symptoms.

Abstract:Abstract. This paper provides the overview of an integrated, multi-disciplinary effort to study the effects of the 29 March 2006 total solar eclipse on the environment, with special focus on the atmosphere. The eclipse has been visible over the Eastern Mediterranean, and on this occasion several research and academic institutes organised co-ordinated experimental campaigns, at different distances from eclipse totality and at various environments in terms of air quality. Detailed results and findings are presented in a number of component scientific papers included in a Special Issue of Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. The effects of the eclipse on meteorological parameters, though very clear, were shown to be controlled by local factors rather than the eclipse magnitudes, and the turbulence activity near surface was suppressed causing a decrease in the Planetary Boundary Layer. In addition to the above, the decrease in solar radiation has caused change to the photochemistry of the atmosphere, with night time chemistry dominating. The abrupt "switch off" of the sun, induced changes also in the ionosphere (140 up to 220 km) and the stratosphere. In the ionosphere, both photochemistry and dynamics resulted to changes in the reflection heights and the electron concentrations. Among the most important scientific findings from the experiments undertaken has been the experimental proof of eclipse induced thermal fluctuations in the ozone layer (Gravity Waves), due to the supersonic movement of the moon's shadow, for the first time with simultaneous measurements at three altitudes namely the troposphere, the stratosphere and the ionosphere. Within the challenging topics of the experiments has been the investigation of eclipse impacts on ecosystems (field crops and marine plankton). The rare event of a total solar eclipse provided the opportunity to evaluate 1 dimensional (1-D) and three dimensional (3-D) radiative transfer (in the atmosphere and underwater), mesoscale meteorological, regional air quality and photochemical box models, against measurements.

Abstract:Photic ocular injuries are secondary traumatic injuries resulting from the toxic effects of the interaction between light and the eye, particularly the retina. We report the cases of two patients who experienced photic macular injury from their early childhood due to observing a solar eclipse without protection. The retinal lesions are mainly macular; these can be serious and irreversible. They are the consequence of photochemical, photomechanical and photothermal reactions. OCT is very useful for the diagnosis of these foveal lesions. The visual prognosis of solar retinopathy is generally favorable. However, some patients may develop permanent sequelae with a decrease in visual acuity. Management remains empirical and controversial. Thus, prevention and public education remain the only effective ways to avoid this type of trauma.

Abstract:A solar eclipse is a fascinating event that gives a unique opportunity to study the ionospheric characteristics in a controlled blockage of solar radiation. We present the upper atmosphere's response, mostly F-layer, during the annular eclipse on October 14, 2023. This eclipse was mostly visible from the North and South American regions with a maximum obscuration of around 91%. We study the response of the ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC) and the critical frequency of the F2 layer ( f0F2 ) for three consecutive days (October 13 to 15, 2023) using ground and space-based techniques. We present the ionospheric response for a large area that covers the path of the solar eclipse of latitude and longitude range from 50 ° N to 10 ° S and 30 ° W to 150 ° W. For the ground-based observation, we use fifty-five International GNSS Service (IGS) stations and eleven Global Ionospheric Radio Observatory (GIRO) Digisonde stations that cover the annular and partial solar eclipse and are in the close vicinity of the annularity belt. We compute the vertical TEC (VTEC) and f0F2 from this database and check their temporal and spatial variations. It is found that the VTEC, as computed from the IGS stations, mostly shows decrements during the partial blockage of the sun by the lunar disc. The VTEC, as computed from the GIRO database, also shows a decreasing trend but with comparatively more oscillating in nature. The f0F2 shows a similar decreasing trend due to the solar eclipse. For space-based observation, we use the Swarm satellite data for the tracks that have gone through the annularity belt. Also, a spatiotemporal study is executed using the Global Ionospheric Map (GIM) database. For both cases, the VTEC shows a prominent depletion. We investigate the variation in the percentage change in VTEC as a function of obscuration and observe a positive correlation between them. We also compute the time difference between the maximum eclipse and the maximum TEC modulation to investigate the response time profiles of the ionosphere at different receiving stations. All the methods give satisfactory and consistent outcomes that corroborate the physical mechanism of ionospheric variabilities due to the effect of the solar eclipse. We check the geomagnetic condition to eliminate the scope of contamination and observe that their values are normal during the study.

Abstract:A total solar eclipse provides an unparalleled opportunity to study the changes in the atmosphere's planetary boundary layer (PBL) due to changes in radiative heating. Although previous eclipse studies have demonstrated that significant changes occur, few studies have explored the evolution of these changes. To better understand the changes in the lowest layers of the PBL during an eclipse, a multi-sensor sampling approach was taken. Radiosonde launches were used to explore the depth of the column, while Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) were used to document with high-resolution the brief changes in the vertical structure of the PBL caused by the eclipse. These changes highlighted differences from previous studies that relied solely on radiosonde and/or mesonet data alone. Higher-resolution sampling of the lower PBL showed a delay in the local vertical mixing as well as changes in the PBL height from pre- to post-eclipse. Slow responses were noted at the top of the PBL while very rapid changes to the PBL profile were captured in the near-surface layer. These changes highlighted differences from previous studies that relied solely on radiosonde and/or mesonet data alone. A preliminary analysis of the collected data highlighted a slow response to the eclipse near the top of the planetary boundary layer (radiosonde data) with very rapid changes noted in the near surface layer (UAV data). Preliminary results show that PBL heights remained nearly constant until well after third contact when a 35 hPa lowering of the PBL heights was observed and were limited to the lowest 25 hPa. The UAV soundings demonstrated the development of a strong inversion where the air below 990 hPa rapidly cooled with a nearly 1 °C drop in temperature observed. These observed changes raise interesting questions about how the lower and upper parts of the planetary boundary layer interact.

Abstract:Abstract The location-based case-control design is a useful approach for studies where the exposures of interest are aspects of the environment around the location of a health event such as a pedestrian fatality. In this design locations are the unit of analysis and an enumerated cohort of locations are followed through time for the health events of interest and a case-control study of locations is nested within the cohort. Locations where events occurred (case-locations) are compared to matched locations where these events did not occur (control-locations). We describe the application of this design to the issue of pedestrian fatalities using a cohort of 9,612,698 intersections, 17,737,728 road segments, and 222,318 entrance/exit ramp segments that existed in 2017 across all 384 U.S. Metropolitan Statistical Areas. This cohort of locations was followed up from Jan 1, 2017 to Dec 31, 2018 for pedestrian fatalities using the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Fatality Analysis Reporting System. In total, 10,587 fatalities were identified as having occurred on cohort locations and 21,174 matched control locations were selected using incidence density sampling. Geographic information systems, spatially linked administrative data sets and virtual neighborhood audits via Google Street View are underway to characterize study locations.

Case Report: Asymmetric Changes of Ophthalmic Findings in Bilateral Solar Eclipse Maculopathy

Abstract:Significance: A more profound understanding of the relationship between ophthalmic findings and eye dominance is needed to guide the timely and proper treatment of binocular photic maculopathy or other macular degeneration. Purpose: A patient with binocular solar maculopathy presented with asymmetric ophthalmic manifestations and changes during 14 months of observation. Early recognition of solar maculopathy can be vital for early diagnosis and better prognosis. Case report: A 21-year-old man was reported to have blurred vision after staring directly at an annular solar eclipse several times for a few seconds on June 21, 2020. His Snellen best-corrected visual acuity declined to 20/50 in both eyes. He was right-eye dominant according to the hole-in-the-card test. The funduscopy found a yellow spot in the center of both maculae. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography images revealed a full-thickness hyperreflectivity extending from the inner retinal layers to the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) along with a localized disruption of the ellipsoid portion of the inner segments and RPE in both eyes. The medical history and clinical manifestations described previously supported the diagnosis of solar maculopathy. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography images during follow-up indicated a diminishing disruption of the ellipsoid portion of the inner segments and RPE without treatment. Interestingly, the nondominant left eye made a better anatomical recovery. Finally, the Snellen best-corrected visual acuity remained 20/20 in both eyes after 14 months. Conclusions: Binocular solar maculopathy can present asymmetrically and recover asymmetrically as well. The dominant eye suffered more obvious damage and poorer anatomical recovery than the nondominant eye.
Compilation and Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Publicly Available Total Solar and UV Irradiance Data in the Contiguous United States.

Abstract:Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, the majority of which is caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) irradiance, which is one component of sunlight. National Environmental Public Health Tracking Program at CDC has collaborated with partners to develop and disseminate county-level daily UV irradiance (2005-2015) and total solar irradiance (1991-2012) data for the contiguous United States. UV irradiance dataset was derived from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (ON), and solar irradiance was extracted from National Solar Radiation Data Base (NSRDB) and Solar-Anywhere data. Firstly, we produced daily population-weighted UV and solar irradiance datasets at the county level. Then the spatial distributions and long-term trends of UV irradiance, solar irradiance and the ratio of UV irradiance to solar irradiance were analyzed. The national average values across all years are 4300 Wh/m(2), 2700 J/m(2) and 130 mW/m(2) for global horizontal irradiance (GHI), erythemally weighted daily dose of UV irradiance (EDD) and erythemally weighted UV irradiance at local solar noon time (EDR), respectively. Solar, UV irradiances and the ratio of UV to solar irradiance all increased toward the South and in some areas with high altitude, suggesting that using solar irradiance as indicator of UV irradiance in studies covering large geographic regions may bias the true pattern of UV exposure. National annual average daily solar and UV irradiances increased significantly over the years by about 0.3% and 0.5% per year, respectively. Both datasets are available to the public through CDC's Tracking network. The UV irradiance dataset is currently the only publicly-available, spatially-resolved, and long-term UV irradiance dataset covering the contiguous United States. These datasets help us understand the spatial distributions and temporal trends of solar and UV irradiances, and allow for improved characterization of UV and sunlight exposure in future studies. Abstract:We present the results from the measurement of secondary cosmic gamma-ray flux using a NaI(Tl) scintillator detector during a total solar eclipse. The unique feature of this experiment is that it was carried out at a place where the solar eclipse was not observable. The total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017, was visible in most of the regions of North America during the day, whereas India, falling on the other half of the globe missed this particular eclipse. Our aim was to measure and examine if there are any variations in the secondary cosmic ray (SCR) flux at Kolkata, India due to the occurrence of the eclipse in America. Detailed experimental techniques used for this experiment are mentioned in this article. Method of data analysis and results are presented. We observe unexpected dehancement and enhancement of SCR flux in certain energy regions.

Abstract:The occasion of the longest totality of an eclipse in the 18 yr 11⅓ d saros cycle leads to taking stock of the scientific value of ground-based eclipse observations in this space age. Though a number of space satellites from the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Russia study the Sun, scientists at eclipses can observe the solar chromosphere and corona at higher spatial resolution, at higher temporal resolution, and at higher spectral resolution than are possible aloft. Furthermore, eclipse expeditions can transport a wide variety of state-of-the-art equipment to the path of totality. Thus, for at least some years to come, solar eclipse observations will remain both scientifically valuable and cost-effective ways to study the outer solar atmosphere.
