Abstract:The occasion of the longest totality of an eclipse in the 18 yr 11⅓ d saros cycle leads to taking stock of the scientific value of ground-based eclipse observations in this space age. Though a number of space satellites from the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Russia study the Sun, scientists at eclipses can observe the solar chromosphere and corona at higher spatial resolution, at higher temporal resolution, and at higher spectral resolution than are possible aloft. Furthermore, eclipse expeditions can transport a wide variety of state-of-the-art equipment to the path of totality. Thus, for at least some years to come, solar eclipse observations will remain both scientifically valuable and cost-effective ways to study the outer solar atmosphere.

Satellite Visibility During the April 2024 Total Eclipse

Abstract:On 8 April 2024, tens of millions of people across North America will be able to view a total solar eclipse. Such astronomical events have been important throughout history, but with nearly 10,000 satellites in orbit, we question whether total eclipses will now reveal a sky full of satellites, fundamentally changing this experience for humanity. Using the current population of Starlink satellites, we find that the brightest satellites would be naked-eye visible in dark skies, but the high sky brightness during totality will make them undetectable to the unaided eye. Our model does not take into account the effects of chance reflections from large, flat surfaces like solar panels, which we expect will cause glints and flares that could be visible from large satellites and abandoned rocket bodies. Time-lapse all-sky imaging might reveal satellites during the eclipse.

Abstract:A Total Solar Eclipse (TSE) is a shocking and sublime experience. In just a week hundreds of millions of Homo Sapiens will attempt to see the 2024 eclipse as it stretches across the North American continent. However, while Homo Sapiens may be uniquely positioned to understand and predict eclipses, they are not the only species capable of observing them. The precise alignment of the Moon, Earth and Sun all existed well before humans. In the same way we share this planet capable of hosting life, the fantastic astronomical experiences available on it are not exclusive either. We present a framework to calculate the number of Total Solar Eclipses experienced by a species at any point in Earth's history. This includes factoring in the evolution of the Sun-Moon-Earth system, the duration the species is extant, and average population. We normalize over the geographic range by calculating an Astronomical World Eclipse Surface cOverage MEtric (AWESOME) time. To illustrate this framework we look at the case study of the family Limulidae (Horseshoe Crabs) and estimate the number of individuals that have seen an eclipse. We compare it to the number of current Homo Sapiens that view eclipses, and predict if it is possible for another species to take the ''top'' spot before the final total solar eclipse in ~ 380 million years.

Abstract:Abstract. This paper provides the overview of an integrated, multi-disciplinary effort to study the effects of the 29 March 2006 total solar eclipse on the environment, with special focus on the atmosphere. The eclipse has been visible over the Eastern Mediterranean, and on this occasion several research and academic institutes organised co-ordinated experimental campaigns, at different distances from eclipse totality and at various environments in terms of air quality. Detailed results and findings are presented in a number of component scientific papers included in a Special Issue of Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. The effects of the eclipse on meteorological parameters, though very clear, were shown to be controlled by local factors rather than the eclipse magnitudes, and the turbulence activity near surface was suppressed causing a decrease in the Planetary Boundary Layer. In addition to the above, the decrease in solar radiation has caused change to the photochemistry of the atmosphere, with night time chemistry dominating. The abrupt "switch off" of the sun, induced changes also in the ionosphere (140 up to 220 km) and the stratosphere. In the ionosphere, both photochemistry and dynamics resulted to changes in the reflection heights and the electron concentrations. Among the most important scientific findings from the experiments undertaken has been the experimental proof of eclipse induced thermal fluctuations in the ozone layer (Gravity Waves), due to the supersonic movement of the moon's shadow, for the first time with simultaneous measurements at three altitudes namely the troposphere, the stratosphere and the ionosphere. Within the challenging topics of the experiments has been the investigation of eclipse impacts on ecosystems (field crops and marine plankton). The rare event of a total solar eclipse provided the opportunity to evaluate 1 dimensional (1-D) and three dimensional (3-D) radiative transfer (in the atmosphere and underwater), mesoscale meteorological, regional air quality and photochemical box models, against measurements.

Abstract:High density meteorological observations show notable response of the atmosphere and changes in measured variables during a historic solar eclipse. A total solar eclipse traversed the continental United States on August 21, 2017. It was the first such event in 99 years and provided a rare opportunity to observe the atmospheric response from a variety of instrumented observational platforms. This paper discusses the high-quality observations collected by the Kentucky Mesonet ( www.kymesonet.org ), a research-grade meteorological and climatological observation network consisting of 72 stations and measuring air temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, solar radiation, wind speed, and wind direction. The network samples the atmosphere, for most variables, every three seconds and then calculates and records observations every five minutes. During the total solar eclipse, these observations were complemented by observations collected from three atmospheric profiling systems positioned in the path of the eclipse and operated by the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). Observational data demonstrates that solar radiation at the surface dropped from > 800 to 0 W m -2 , the air temperature decreased by about 4.5 °C and, most interestingly, a land breeze/sea breeze-type wind developed. In addition, due to the high density of observations, the network recorded a detailed representation of the spatial variation of surface meteorology. The UAH profiling system captured collapse and reformation of the planetary boundary layer and related changes during the total solar eclipse.

Abstract:A total solar eclipse occurred on April 8, 2024, across the United States, with obscuration rates ranging from 20–100% at different locations. We study the ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC) response to the eclipse using data from 51 ground-based GPS stations. We find a significant depletion in TEC of up to 65%, with larger depletion rates occurring along the path of totality. We also observe a time delay between the maximum TEC depletion and the time of maximum obscuration, ranging from 8 to 80 minutes, with longer delays occurring at stations with lower obscuration rates. Both time delay and TEC depletion rates are found to vary with latitude, with slightly longer delays at lower latitudes and higher TEC depletion rates at mid-latitudes. The TEC depletion rate also increased with local time, showing a higher decrement after noon compared to before. The spatiotemporal variation in TEC closely followed the eclipse's path, indicating a positive correlation with the movement of the moon's shadow. Monitoring rate of TEC change during such rare events is crucial for enhancing our understanding of ionospheric dynamics, which can be very helpful to improve the accuracy of global communication and navigation systems.

Abstract:A solar eclipse is a fascinating event that gives a unique opportunity to study the ionospheric characteristics in a controlled blockage of solar radiation. We present the upper atmosphere's response, mostly F-layer, during the annular eclipse on October 14, 2023. This eclipse was mostly visible from the North and South American regions with a maximum obscuration of around 91%. We study the response of the ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC) and the critical frequency of the F2 layer ( f0F2 ) for three consecutive days (October 13 to 15, 2023) using ground and space-based techniques. We present the ionospheric response for a large area that covers the path of the solar eclipse of latitude and longitude range from 50 ° N to 10 ° S and 30 ° W to 150 ° W. For the ground-based observation, we use fifty-five International GNSS Service (IGS) stations and eleven Global Ionospheric Radio Observatory (GIRO) Digisonde stations that cover the annular and partial solar eclipse and are in the close vicinity of the annularity belt. We compute the vertical TEC (VTEC) and f0F2 from this database and check their temporal and spatial variations. It is found that the VTEC, as computed from the IGS stations, mostly shows decrements during the partial blockage of the sun by the lunar disc. The VTEC, as computed from the GIRO database, also shows a decreasing trend but with comparatively more oscillating in nature. The f0F2 shows a similar decreasing trend due to the solar eclipse. For space-based observation, we use the Swarm satellite data for the tracks that have gone through the annularity belt. Also, a spatiotemporal study is executed using the Global Ionospheric Map (GIM) database. For both cases, the VTEC shows a prominent depletion. We investigate the variation in the percentage change in VTEC as a function of obscuration and observe a positive correlation between them. We also compute the time difference between the maximum eclipse and the maximum TEC modulation to investigate the response time profiles of the ionosphere at different receiving stations. All the methods give satisfactory and consistent outcomes that corroborate the physical mechanism of ionospheric variabilities due to the effect of the solar eclipse. We check the geomagnetic condition to eliminate the scope of contamination and observe that their values are normal during the study.

Abstract:Eclipse Observation from the Moon and Cislunar Space. The observation of lunar eclipses from the Earth’s surface is quite frequent. The observation of solar eclipses, on the other hand, requires a special expedition to the specific geographical area where one is visible; such expeditions frequently are foiled by weather. Observed on Earth, the duration of totality of a solar eclipse is very short. Even on board a highspeed jet aircraft chasing the fleeting shadow above the clouds, there are only a few minutes in which to perform the most important experiments.This study concentrates on the unique opportunities available for performing valuable scientific experiments on the Moon during the occurrence of eclipses of the Sun and Earth. Complementary observations that can be obtained concurrently from the Earth and from Earth-orbiting spacecraft are also examined. Two time phases are distinguished since progress in this transplanted field of a very old science depends directly on the growth of the space program. In the immediate future, scientific results will be limited and will pertain primarily to solar physics and geophysics. Nevertheless, it can be shown that even very simple observations obtained during the initial lunar landings will reveal astonishingly valuable scientific information.For each of the two phases mentioned above, the study discusses the scientific experiments and observations that will probably be most fruitfully performed on the Moon, on Earth, and aboard spacecraft. The range of instrumentation and equipment extends from simple stop watches, cameras, and geigercounters to sophisticated structures such as radio telescopes on the Moon. Throughout the paper, it is shown that the value to be derived from the observations will be greatly enhanced by simultaneous observations from different locations.The substantive results are essentially three-fold. First, the study illustrates how the obtaining of eclipse observations from extraterrestrial locations creates startingly unique opportunities to conduct a variety of scientific experiments not possible from Earth in a number of diverse disciplines. Secondly, it shows the importance of conducting coordinated, simultaneous observations both with regard to location on the Moon, on the Earth, and in space, and with regard to different disciplines. Finally, it emphasizes the value of international cooperation to such an eclipse program. This cooperation should encompass amateur as well as professional astronomical observations of eclipses from all parts of the earth, at the same time that space scientists perform their observations on the Moon and aboard spacecraft.

Abstract:Solar and lunar eclipses are indeed the first astronomical phenomena which have been recorded since very early antiquity. Their periodicities gave birth to the first luni-solar calendars based on the Methonic cycle since the sixth century before Christ. The Saros cycle of 18.03 years is due to the Chaldean astronomical observations. Their eclipses’ observations reported by Ptolemy in the Almagest (Alexandria of Egypt, about 150 a.C.) enabled modern astronomers to recognize the irregular rotation rate of the Earth. The Earth’s rotation is some hours in delay after the last three millenia if we use the present rotation to simulate the 721 b.C. total eclipse in Babylon. This is one of the most important issues in modern celestial mechanics, along with the Earth’s axis nutation of 18 yr (discovered in 1737), precession of 25.7 Kyr (discovered by Ipparchus around 150 b.C.) and obliquity of 42 Kyr motions (discovered by Arabic astronomers and assessed from the Middle Ages to the modern era, IX to XVIII centuries). Newtonian and Einstenian gravitational theories explain fully these tiny motions, along with the Lense–Thirring gravitodynamic effect, which required great experimental accuracy. The most accurate lunar and solar theories, or their motion in analytical or numerical form, allow us to predict—along with the lunar limb profile recovered by a Japanese lunar orbiter—the appearance of total, annular solar eclipses or lunar occultations for a given place on Earth. The observation of these events, with precise timing, may permit us to verify the sphericity of the solar profile and its variability. The variation of the solar diameter on a global scale was claimed firstly by Angelo Secchi in the 1860s and more recently by Jack Eddy in 1978. In both cases, long and accurate observational campaigns started in Rome (1877–1937) and Greenwich Observatories, as well as at Yale University and the NASA and US Naval Observatory (1979–2011) with eclipses and balloon-borne heliometric observations. The IOTA/ES and US sections as well as the ICRA continued the eclipse campaigns. The global variations of the solar diameter over a decadal timescale, and at the millarcsecond level, may reflect some variation in solar energy output, which may explain some past climatic variations (such as the Allerød and Dryas periods in Pleistocene), involving the outer layers of the Sun. “An eclipse never comes alone”; in the eclipse season, lasting about one month, we can have also lunar eclipses. Including the penumbral lunar eclipses, the probability of occurrence is equi-distributed amongst lunar and solar eclipses, but while the lunar eclipses are visible for a whole hemisphere at once, the solar eclipses are not. The color of the umbral shadow on the Moon was known since antiquity, and Galileo (1632, Dialogo sopra i Massimi Sistemi del Mondo) shows clearly these phenomena from copper color to a totally dark, eclipsed full Moon. Three centuries later, André Danjon was able to correlate that umbral color with the 11-year cycle of solar activity. The forthcoming American total solar eclipse of 8 April 2024 will be probably the eclipse with the largest mediatic impact of the history; we wish that also the scientific impulse toward solar physics and astronomy will be relevant, and the measure of the solar diameter with Baily’s beads is indeed one of the topics significantly related to the Sun–Earth connections.

In the Shadow of the 1919 Total Solar Eclipse: The Two British Expeditions and the Politics of Invisibility

Abstract:This paper addresses the legendary total solar eclipse of 29 May 1919. Two British teams confirmed the light bending prediction by Albert Einstein: Charles R. Davidson and Andrew C. C. Crommelin in Sobral, Brazil and Arthur S. Eddington and Edwin T. Cottingham on the African island of Príncipe, then part of the Portuguese empire. By jointly analyzing the two astronomical expeditions supported by written and visual sources, I show how, despite extensive scholarship on this famous historical episode and the historiographical emphasis on the plural dimensions of knowledge construction, many human and non-human actors have been kept in the shadow of the eclipse. I do so by focusing on what I call knowledge from the periphery together with knowledge from below, grounded literally on how localities (sites) affect choices and events, and growing outward to encompass a wide range of participants. I show how the geopolitical status of the two nations where the observational sites were located, and specifically Portugal's condition of colonial power, affected main decisions and events, while highlighting the active role of participants, ranging from experts from the peripheries and those involved in the travels to local elites and anonymous peoples, some of whom contributed to the observation of totality.

Abstract:A total solar eclipse provides an unparalleled opportunity to study the changes in the atmosphere's planetary boundary layer (PBL) due to changes in radiative heating. Although previous eclipse studies have demonstrated that significant changes occur, few studies have explored the evolution of these changes. To better understand the changes in the lowest layers of the PBL during an eclipse, a multi-sensor sampling approach was taken. Radiosonde launches were used to explore the depth of the column, while Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) were used to document with high-resolution the brief changes in the vertical structure of the PBL caused by the eclipse. These changes highlighted differences from previous studies that relied solely on radiosonde and/or mesonet data alone. Higher-resolution sampling of the lower PBL showed a delay in the local vertical mixing as well as changes in the PBL height from pre- to post-eclipse. Slow responses were noted at the top of the PBL while very rapid changes to the PBL profile were captured in the near-surface layer. These changes highlighted differences from previous studies that relied solely on radiosonde and/or mesonet data alone. A preliminary analysis of the collected data highlighted a slow response to the eclipse near the top of the planetary boundary layer (radiosonde data) with very rapid changes noted in the near surface layer (UAV data). Preliminary results show that PBL heights remained nearly constant until well after third contact when a 35 hPa lowering of the PBL heights was observed and were limited to the lowest 25 hPa. The UAV soundings demonstrated the development of a strong inversion where the air below 990 hPa rapidly cooled with a nearly 1 °C drop in temperature observed. These observed changes raise interesting questions about how the lower and upper parts of the planetary boundary layer interact.

Abstract:Space-based observations of the total lunar eclipse on 21 January 2019 were conducted using the geostationary Earth-orbiting satellite Gaofen-4 (GF-4). This study represents a pioneering effort to address the observational gap in full-disk lunar eclipse photometry from space. With its high resolution and ability to capture the entire lunar disk, GF-4 enabled both quantitative and qualitative analyses of the variations in lunar brightness, as well as spectra and color changes, across two spatial dimensions, from the whole lunar disk to resolved regions. Our results indicate that before the totality phase of the lunar eclipse, the irradiance of the Moon diminishes to below approximately 0.19% of that of the uneclipsed Moon. Additionally, we observed an increase in lunar brightness at the initial entry into the penumbra. This phenomenon is attributed to the opposition effect, providing scientific evidence for this unexpected behavior. To investigate detailed spectral variations, specific calibration sites, including the Chang'E-3 landing site, MS-2 in Mare Serenitatis, and the Apollo 16 highlands, were analyzed. Notably, the red-to-blue ratio dropped below 1 near the umbra, contradicting the common perception that the Moon appears red during lunar eclipses. The red/blue ratio images reveal that as the Moon enters Earth's umbra, it does not simply turn red; instead, a blue-banded ring appears at the boundary due to ozone absorption and the lunar surface composition. These findings significantly enhance our understanding of atmospheric effects on lunar eclipses and provide crucial reference information for the future modeling of lunar eclipse radiation, promoting the integration of remote sensing science with astronomy.

Abstract:Total eclipses permit a deep analysis of both the inner and the outer parts of the corona using the continuum White-Light (W-L) radiations from electrons (K-corona), the superposed spectrum of forbidden emission lines from ions (E-corona) and the dust component with F-lines (F-corona). By sufficiently dispersing the W-L spectrum, the Fraunhofer (F) spectrum of the dust component of the corona appears and the continuum Thomson radiation can be evaluated. The superposed emission lines of ions with different degrees of ionization are studied to allow the measurement of temperatures, non-thermal velocities, Doppler shifts and abundances. We describe a slit spectroscopic experiment of high spectral resolution for providing an analysis of the most typical parts of the quasi-minimum type corona observed during the total solar eclipse of Aug. 21, 2017 observed from Idaho, USA. Streamers, active region enhancements and polar coronal holes (CHs) are well measured using deep spectra. 60 spectra are obtained during the totality with a long slit, covering +/-3 solar radii in the range of 510 to 590nm. The K+F continuum corona is well exposed up to 2 solar radius. The F-corona can be measured even at the solar limb. New weak emission lines were discovered or confirmed. The rarely observed high FIP ArX line is recorded almost everywhere; the FeXIV and NiXIII lines are well recorded everywhere. For the first time hot lines are also measured inside the CH regions. The radial variations of the non-thermal turbulent velocities of the lines do not show a great departure from the average values. No significantly large Doppler shifts are seen anywhere in the inner and the middle corona. The wings of the FeXIV line show some non-Gaussianity.

Abstract:We present spectra and broad-band polarized light data from a novel suite of instruments deployed during the 21st August 2017 total solar eclipse. Our goals were to survey solar spectra at thermal infrared wavelengths during eclipse, and to test new technology for measuring polarized coronal light. An infrared coronal imaging spectrometer, flown at 14.3 km altitude above Kentucky, was supported on the ground by observations from Madras, Oregon (elevation 683 m) and Camp Wyoba on Casper Mountain, Wyoming (2402 m). In Wyoming we deployed a new infrared Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS), three low-dispersion spectrometers loaned to us by Avantes, a novel visible-light camera PolarCam, sensitive to linear polarization, and one of two infrared cameras from FLIR Systems, the other operated at Madras. Circumstances of eclipse demanded that the observations spanned 17:19 to 18:26 UT. We analyze spectra of the limb photosphere, the chromosphere, prominences, and coronal lines from 310 nm to 5.5 μm. We calibrated data photometrically using the solar disk as a source. Between different spectrometers, the calibrations were consistent to better than 13%. But the sensitivities achieved were insufficient to detect coronal lines from the ground. The PolarCam data are in remarkable agreement with polarization data from the K-Cor synoptic instrument on Mauna Loa, and with FLIR intensity data acquired in Madras. We discuss new results, including a detection of the He i 1083 nm multiplet in emission during the whole of totality. The combination of the FTS and AIR-Spec spectra reveals for the first time the effects of the telluric extinction on the infrared coronal emission lines, to be observed with upcoming Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope.

First Global-Scale Synoptic Imaging of Solar Eclipse Effects in the Thermosphere

Abstract:A total solar eclipse occurred in the Southern Hemisphere on 2 July 2019 from approximately 17 to 22 UT. Its effect in the thermosphere over South America was imaged from geostationary orbit by NASA's Global-scale Observation of Limb and Disk (GOLD) instrument. GOLD observed a large brightness reduction (>80% around totality) in OI 135.6 nm and N2 LBH band emissions compared to baseline measurements made 2 days prior. In addition, a significant enhancement (with respect to the baseline) in the ΣO/N2 column density ratio (~80%) was observed within the eclipse's totality. This enhancement suggests that the eclipse induced compositional changes in the thermosphere. After the eclipse passed, a slight enhancement in ΣO/N2 column density ratio (~7%) was also seen around the totality path when compared to measurements before the eclipse. These observations are the first synoptic imaging measurements of an eclipse's thermospheric effects with the potential to drastically improve and test our understanding of how the thermosphere responds to rapid, localized changes in solar short wavelength radiation.

Abstract:Continuing our series of observations of the motion and dynamics of the solar corona over the solar-activity cycle, we observed the corona from sites in Queensland, Australia, during the 13 (UT)/14 (local time) November 2012 total solar eclipse. The corona took the low-ellipticity shape typical of solar maximum (flattening index {\epsilon} = 0.01), showing a change from the composite coronal images that we had observed and analyzed in this journal and elsewhere for the 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010 eclipses. After crossing the northeast Australian coast, the rest of the path of totality was over the ocean, so further totality was seen only by shipborne observers. Our results include measurements of velocities of a coronal mass ejection; during the 36 minutes of passage from the Queensland coast to a ship north of New Zealand, we find a speed of 413 km/s, and we analyze its dynamics. We discuss the shapes and positions of several types of coronal features seen on our higher-resolution composite Queensland images of the solar corona, including, many helmet streamers, very faint bright and dark loops at the base of helmet streamers, voids and radially oriented thin streamers. We compare our eclipse observations with a hairy-ball model of the magnetic field, confirming the validity of the prediction, and we relate the eclipse phenomenology seen with the near-simultaneous images from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on the NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO/AIA), the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager on NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO/EUVI), ESA/ROB's PROBA2/SWAP, and NRL's LASCO on ESA's SOHO. For example, the southeastern CME is related to the solar flare whose origin we trace with a SWAP series of images.
