Abstract:Objectives: Beginning in January 2023, numerous eye drops were recalled following reports of contamination. To investigate hesitancy in topical therapies for dry eye disease (DED), we analyzed trends in Internet search traffic for alternative DED therapies and eye drop safety concerns following initial recalls. Methods: Google Trends (GT) was used to measure the popularity of specific search terms during a given time period. The main GT output metric for gauging interest in a search term is the Search Volume Index (SVI). We collected worldwide SVI data for terms "dry eye vitamin," "are eye drops safe," "stop eye drops," "lipiflow," "ilux treatment," "dry eye mask," "dry eye warm compress," "omega-3 for dry eyes," "dry eye plugs," "dry eye humidifier," "itear," and "IPL dry eye" from April 24, 2022, to October 29, 2023. Statistical analysis was performed with Microsoft Excel v.16.77.1, and comparisons between groups were performed using paired t tests. Results: A significant increase in SVI was observed for most keywords. When comparing the 40-week period before and after the initial recall, 7/10 alternative DED therapies demonstrated a statistically significant surge in Internet search traffic after recall (P < 0.05). Furthermore, 2/2 keywords pertaining to eye drop safety concerns demonstrated an increase in SVI (P < 0.0001). Conclusions: We identified a significant surge in Internet search activity for eye drop safety and alternative DED therapies following eye drop recalls. Public health agencies and physicians may find this information valuable while attempting to address safety concerns and navigating noncompliance of routine eye drop therapy.

The highest average search volumes were "lazy eye," "strabismus," and "vision therapy." "Amblyopia" had the lowest search volume. Abstract:Solar maculopathy is a rare retinal injury that occurs as a result of directly gazing at the sun or viewing a solar eclipse without adequate eye protection. This condition typically results in a mild-to-moderate decrease in visual acuity, accompanied by central or paracentral scotomata. Most individuals experience spontaneous recovery within a period of 1 to 6 months. However, it is important to note that certain patients may endure persistent visual acuity deficits and/or scotomata, leading to long-term impairment. This case emphasizes the crucial role of eye protection during solar eclipses and highlights the necessity for public education to prevent lasting damage. Abstract:The analysis of the public interest as reflected by Internet queries has become a highly valuable tool in many fields. The Google Trends platform, providing timely and informative data, has become increasingly popular in health and medical studies. This study explores whether Internet search frequencies for the keyword "headache" have been increasing after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, which could signal an increased incidence of the health problem. Weekly search volume data for 5 years spanning February 2017 to February 2022 were sourced from Google Trends. Six statistical and machine-learning methods were implemented on training and testing sets via pre-set automated forecasting algorithms. Holt-Winters has been identified as overperforming in predicting web query trends through several accuracy measures and the DM test for forecasting superiority and has been employed for producing the baseline level in the estimation of excess query level over the first pandemic wave. Findings indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in an increased global incidence of headache (as proxied by related web queries) in the first 6 months after its outbreak, with an excess occurrence of 4.53% globally. However, the study also concludes that the increasing trend in headache incidence at the world level would have continued in the absence of the pandemic, but it has been accelerated by the pandemic event. Results further show mixed correlations at the country-level between COVID-19 infection rates and population web-search behavior, suggesting that the increased headache incidence is caused by pandemic-related factors (i.e. increased stress and mental health problems), rather than a direct effect of coronavirus infections. Other noteworthy findings entail that in the Philippines, the term "headache" was the most frequently searched term in the period spanning February 2020 to February 2022, indicating that headache occurrences are a significant aspect that defines population health at the country level. High relative interest is also detected in Kenya and South Africa after the pandemic outbreak. Additionally, research findings indicate that the relative interest has decreased in some countries (i.e. US, Canada, and Australia), whereas it has increased in others (i.e. India and Pakistan) after the pandemic outbreak. We conclude that observing Internet search habits can provide timely information for policymakers on collective health trends, as opposed to ex-post statistics, and can furthermore yield valuable information for the pain management drug market key players about aggregate consumer behavior.

Abstract:Purpose: To explore the characteristics of spatial-temporal prevalence and public attention of dry eye diseases (DED) through Baidu Index (BI) based on infodemiology method. Methods: The data about BI of DED were collected from Baidu search engine using "Dry eye diseases" as keyword. The spatial and temporal distribution of DED were analyzed through timeseries data decomposition as well as spatial autocorrelation and hotspot detection of BI about DED. The most popular related words and demographic characteristics were recorded to determine the public attention of DED. Results: The trends of BI about DED in Chinese mainland had gradually increased over time with a rapid increase from 2012 to 2014 and in 2018. The results of timeseries decomposition indicated that there was seasonality in the distribution of BI about DED with the peak in winter, especially in northern regions. The geographic distribution demonstrated the search activities of DED was highest in the east of Chinese mainland while lowest in the west. The vast majority of people searching for DED were teenagers (20-29 years), with a predominance of females. Glaucoma, keratitis and conjunctivitis were the diseases most often confused with DED, and the artificial tears were the most common treatment for DED in Chinese mainland according to the BI about DED. Conclusions: The analysis revealed the seasonality, geographic hotspots and public concern of DED through BI in Chinese mainland, which provided new insights into the epidemiology of DED.

Abstract:Background This study aims to investigate the global disease burden, risk factors, and temporal trends of eye cancer by sex and age group. Methods Databases including Cancer Incidence in Five Continents volumes I–XI, the Nordic Cancer Registries, the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program and the WHO IARC mortality database were accessed to extract incidence and mortality data. Joinpoint regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the Average Annual Percentage Change of the incidence and mortality. Results The age‐standardised rates of eye cancer incidence and mortality were 0.49 and 0.08 globally in 2020. Higher incidence rates were observed in Sub‐Saharan Africa (ASR = 4.06), Western Europe (ASR = 0.89), and Northern Europe (ASR = 0.84), but higher mortality was observed only in Sub‐Saharan Africa (ASR = 1.59). Lower HDI, higher prevalence of UV exposure and lower prevalence of several lifestyle habits and metabolic syndromes were associated with higher incidence and mortality. There was an overall stable incidence trend and a decreasing mortality trend. Notably, all countries reporting decreasing trend in mortality were in the Asian or European region. Conclusions Although higher incidence was observed in both African and European regions, only the Sub‐Saharan Africa region reported high mortality, indicating inequity in the access of healthcare and treatment resource. Higher prevalence of UV exposure was associated with both higher incidence and mortality. Education should be provided to increase the awareness of eye protection. An overall declining mortality trend was found, but it was limited to only Asian and European countries.

Health Education Research on the Prevention and Treatment of Myopia: A Bibliometric Analysis of Trends A Cross Regions

Abstract:Background: In recent years, the prevalence of myopia or eye illnesses in adolescents has remain ed high, with younger onset ages and increasing degrees of myopia. Adolescents’ understanding of the reasons of myopia (such as eye habits, eating habits, and out - door sports) is limited to self-awareness, and studies reveal that most youngsters are unaware of myopia defenses. Health education may show to be an effective means of preventing myopia, and it can be taught to adoles cents to help them become more aware of myopia prevention and control. Methods: From 1970 to June 2022, this bibliometric study looked at the publishing trends of publications on the impact of health edu - cation on myopia prevention and treatment in the literature. These data are taken from the SCOPUS. Annual publications, most relevant authors, sources, countries, subjects, and keywords are all displayed on distinct visualization maps. These data were put via a network analysis. The goal of this study is to look into current trends in myopia prevention and control measures. Furthermore, the data was quali - tatively examined using 10 cited articles, exhibiting our instructional themes and methodologies in the field of myopia prevention and con - trol study. Results: The findings suggest that the citation rate in this disci - pline increases as the literature grows. INTERNATIONAL EYE SCIENCE, which witnessed a substantially better citation rate after 2012 and published the most myopia-related publications, published the ma - jority of the most relevant papers. BRITISH JOURNAL OF OPHTHAL - MOLOGY is more likely to publish articles with keywords like myopia, myopia prevention, juvenile myopia, and myopia testing. China, the United States, Singapore, and the United Kingdom are the countries that publish the most articles on a global scale. Using myopia pre - vention, prevention, detection, and education as goals, and myopia surgery and lens section surgery as means, at least 11 citations have been published, according to qualitative analysis. Abstract:Background: The physical discomfort and collection of symptoms after digital screen use for longer than two hours at a time is referred by the Vision Council as digital eye strain (DES). Common symptoms of DES are eyestrain, headache, blurred vision, dry eyes and pain in neck and shoulders. This study aims to know about the prevalence; factors associated with and awareness about preventive measures for DES among college students.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted for 2 months in 2017 among randomly selected 200 college students of 20 to 30 years of age in Indore city of Madhya Pradesh using a pre-designed semi-structured questionnaire.Results: Mean age of participants was 22.5 years; of which 58% were females. Of the respondents, 89.5% (179 students) reported experiencing DES. Average distance from digital screen, brightness level of digital device, use of digital device before going to sleep and awareness about appropriate distance of digital screen from eyes had statistically significant association with having digital eye strain. 98% of respondents were unaware of the term DES while >60% did not have knowledge about the harmful blue light emitted by digital devices, protective use of digital screen filters, appropriate distance of viewing digital screen and the 20-20-20 rule of taking breaks in between screen time.Conclusions: Since digital device use is a necessary evil; better ergonomic practices to avoid DES should be adopted. Opportunistic health promotion and patient education undertaken by ophthalmologists on an OPD basis is one solution.
Long-term sequelae of photic eye injury from a solar eclipse

Abstract:Photic ocular injuries are secondary traumatic injuries resulting from the toxic effects of the interaction between light and the eye, particularly the retina. We report the cases of two patients who experienced photic macular injury from their early childhood due to observing a solar eclipse without protection. The retinal lesions are mainly macular; these can be serious and irreversible. They are the consequence of photochemical, photomechanical and photothermal reactions. OCT is very useful for the diagnosis of these foveal lesions. The visual prognosis of solar retinopathy is generally favorable. However, some patients may develop permanent sequelae with a decrease in visual acuity. Management remains empirical and controversial. Thus, prevention and public education remain the only effective ways to avoid this type of trauma.

Abstract:Abstract: The term "digital eye strain" (DES) refers to a group of visual and ocular problems brought on by extended usage of digital electronic gadgets. Dry eyes, itchiness, a feeling of a foreign body, watering, blurred vision, and headaches are its hallmarks. Eye strain can also cause non-ocular symptoms such a stiff neck, generalised weariness, headaches, and backaches. In the years before COVID-19, a varying incidence of 5 to 65% has been recorded. Outdoor activities were limited for all age groups due to lockdown regulations during the pandemic, and digital learning took over for nearly two years. The prevalence of DES increased to 50–60% in children alone, but the symptoms also widened to encompass recently developed esotropia and vergence abnormalities. One of the most important eye health issues is myopia. Following proper ergonomics, such as reducing average daily screen time, frequent blinking, better lighting, minimising glare, taking regular breaks from the screen, occasionally shifting focus to a distant object, and adhering to the 20-20-20 rule can help manage DES. High-resolution screens, built-in antireflective coating, matte-finished glass, edge-to-edge displays, and image-smoothing visual effects are examples of innovations in this area. The recommendations for optimising digital screens, cutting-edge technology for spectacle lenses, and built-in filters to enhance visual comfort should be the focus of further research. Our understanding of how to approach DES from an etiological standpoint needs to change in order to investigate tailored remedies. Abstract:Background: Ophthalmopathy occurring in childhood can easily lead to irreversible visual impairment, and therefore a great deal of clinical and fundamental researches have been conducted in pediatric ophthalmopathy. However, a few studies have been performed to analyze such large amounts of research using bibliometric methods. This study intended to apply bibliometric methods to analyze the research hotspots and trends in pediatric ophthalmopathy, providing a basis for clinical practice and scientific research to improve children's eye health. Methods: Publications related to pediatric ophthalmopathy were searched and identified in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. Bibliometric and visualized analysis was performed using the WoSCC analysis system and CiteSpace.6.2.6 software, and high-impact publications were analyzed. Results: This study included a total of 7,177 publications from 162 countries and regions. Of these, 2,269 from the United States and 1,298 from China. The centrality and H-index were highest in the United States at 0.27 and 66, respectively. The University of London and Harvard University had the highest H-index at 37. Freedman,Sharon F published 55 publications, with the highest H-index at 19. The emerging burst keyword in 2020–2023 was "eye tracking," and the burst keywords in 2021–2023 were "choroidal thickness," "pediatric ophthalmology," "impact" and "childhood glaucoma." Retinopathy of prematurity, myopia, retinoblastoma and uveitis in juvenile idiopathic arthritis were the main topics in the high-impact publications, with clinical studies in the majority, especially in retinopathy of prematurity. Conclusion: Eye health in children is a research hotspot, with the United States publishing the largest number of papers and having the greatest influence in research on pediatric ophthalmopathy, and China coming in second. The University of London and Stanford University had the greatest influence. Freedman, Sharon F was the most influential author. Furthermore, "choroidal thickness," "pediatric ophthalmology," "impact," "childhood glaucoma" and "eye tracking"are the latest hotspots in the field of pediatric ophthalmopathy. These hotspots represent hot diseases, hot technologies and holistic concepts, which are exactly the research trends in the field of pediatric ophthalmopathy, providing guidance and grounds for clinical practice and scientific research on children's eye health.

Sharp Edge Eye Syndrome: A Case Report and Survey of Self-Identified Individuals

Abstract:Background: Sharp edge eye syndrome (SEES), sometimes known as visual looming syndrome, is a condition in which the patient experiences ocular pain or discomfort when viewing or mentally picturing sharp objects and edges. Patients may present for medical care because they perceive the condition to represent an ophthalmic problem or a sign of a more serious underlying condition. An individual case report of SEES is included to aid in illustrating syndrome characteristics. Our aim is to describe the syndrome, vision-related quality of life (VRQOL), and psychosocial characteristics in patients with self-identified SEES. Methods: A cross-sectional web-based survey was made available on social media webpages dedicated to SEES. The study included 22 questions developed by the research team, demographic questions, and 4 standardized questionnaires [ID Migraine, the National Eye Institute's Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25), General Anxiety Disorder-2 (GAD-2), and Patient Health Questionnaire (depression) Scale-2]. Results: Seventy-seven respondents had an average age of 29 and were 57% male. 92% reported symptoms before age 18. The main site of pain or discomfort was the eyes, with onset resulting from viewing or thinking of sharp objects and edges. Symptoms lasted from seconds to hours and could be prolonged even after closing eyes or avoiding viewing the trigger. The composite and subscale scores on the NEI-VFQ-25 were low, with a mean composite score of 78 and selected subscores of general health (61), general vision (73), ocular pain (68), driving (79), mental health (61), and role difficulties (72). Anxiety was reported in 58% of participants, and depression in 57%. Migraine or headache was reported in 46% of participants. Participants reported Alice in Wonderland syndrome, visual snow, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, stripe-induced visual discomfort, and synesthesia. Conclusion: From this survey, we have the beginnings of an understanding of the characteristics of SEES, as well as VRQOL impacts. These survey responses lead us to postulate that SEES may be a distinct visual phenomenon and to propose SEES criteria. Systematic studies of this condition's clinical features and treatment responses will be additional steps toward improving patient care.

Abstract:We read with interest Dewing et al.'s paper on the disparity between funding for eye research versus the significant cost of sight-loss in the UK [1]. This article highlights the comparatively low level of ophthalmic research funding in the UK, when compared to cardiovascular disease and cancer research, despite the significant economic impacts of visual impairment [1]. Preventable vision loss imposes significant costs on health, public and private funds, with the economic impact of blindness and visual impairment in the United Kingdom estimated to be over £15.8 billion in 2013 [2]. With aging populations, the prevention of avoidable blindness will become an even greater challenge and novel, more efficient methods of vision screening need to be implemented.

Abstract:Background: In health and medicine, people heavily use the Internet to search for information about symptoms, diseases, and treatments. As such, the Internet information can simulate expert medical doctors, pharmacists, and other health care providers. Aim: This article aims to evaluate a dataset of search terms to determine whether search queries and terms can be used to reliably predict skin disease breakouts. Furthermore, the authors propose and evaluate a model to decide when to declare a particular month as Epidemic at the US national level. Methods: A Model was designed to distinguish a breakout in skin diseases based on the number of monthly discovered cases. To apply this model, the authors correlated Google Trends of popular search terms with monthly reported Rubella and Measles cases from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Regressions and decision trees were used to determine the impact of different terms to trigger the occurrence of epidemic classes. Results: Results showed that the volume of search keywords for Rubella and Measles rises when the volume of those reported diseases rises. Results also implied that the overall process was successful and should be repeated with other diseases. Such process can trigger different actions or activities to be taken when a certain month is declared as “Epidemic.” Furthermore, this research has shown great interest for vaccination against Measles and Rubella. Conclusions: The findings suggest that the search queries and keyword trends can be truly reliable to be used for the prediction of disease outbreaks and some other related knowledge extraction applications. Also search-term surveillance can provide an additional tool for infectious disease surveillance. Future research needs to re-apply the model used in this article, and researchers need to question whether characterizing the epidemiology of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic waves in United States can be done through search queries and keyword trends.
Case Report: Asymmetric Changes of Ophthalmic Findings in Bilateral Solar Eclipse Maculopathy

Abstract:Significance: A more profound understanding of the relationship between ophthalmic findings and eye dominance is needed to guide the timely and proper treatment of binocular photic maculopathy or other macular degeneration. Purpose: A patient with binocular solar maculopathy presented with asymmetric ophthalmic manifestations and changes during 14 months of observation. Early recognition of solar maculopathy can be vital for early diagnosis and better prognosis. Case report: A 21-year-old man was reported to have blurred vision after staring directly at an annular solar eclipse several times for a few seconds on June 21, 2020. His Snellen best-corrected visual acuity declined to 20/50 in both eyes. He was right-eye dominant according to the hole-in-the-card test. The funduscopy found a yellow spot in the center of both maculae. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography images revealed a full-thickness hyperreflectivity extending from the inner retinal layers to the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) along with a localized disruption of the ellipsoid portion of the inner segments and RPE in both eyes. The medical history and clinical manifestations described previously supported the diagnosis of solar maculopathy. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography images during follow-up indicated a diminishing disruption of the ellipsoid portion of the inner segments and RPE without treatment. Interestingly, the nondominant left eye made a better anatomical recovery. Finally, the Snellen best-corrected visual acuity remained 20/20 in both eyes after 14 months. Conclusions: Binocular solar maculopathy can present asymmetrically and recover asymmetrically as well. The dominant eye suffered more obvious damage and poorer anatomical recovery than the nondominant eye.
