Abstract:<p>The compressive characteristics of egg-box energy-absorbing cores composed of plain-weave carbon/epoxy composites were analysed via a finite-element analysis (FEA) and experimentally validated. Through draping experiments and simulations, material behavioural aspects, including wrinkle generation according to the initial draping orientation (0° ([0/90]T), 30° ([30/-60]T), and 45° ([±45]T)) of uncured prepregs were estimated. The compressive behaviour and energy-absorbing capability of the cured egg-box core were estimated via FEA and experimentally validated. To improve the simulation accuracy, the fibre orientation-mapping technique as well as models for modulus degradation and progressive failure were developed and applied in the FEA. Using the abovementioned simulation technique, the crushing behaviour of the egg-box energy-absorbing core was predicted, and the corresponding failure mode under compression was estimated successfully.</p>
