Abstract:The sensor head of the high-temperature fiber optic sensor plays a very important role in the measurement, it directly determines the frequency response characteristics, distinguishability and other features of the sensor, so the detailed and advanced research is necessary. In this paper, the frequency response characteristics of high-temperature fiber optic sensor head are studied by means of a laser heated system, relationship between sensor head's response time and its geometrical sizes is obtained, which is in accord with theoretical evaluations.

Abstract:<p>Conventional methods of surface temperature measurement are often unreliable, and other methods may not be practical in closed, high-temperature spaces. In this study, surface temperature measurements of the cooling panel of a natural circulation facility were performed with fiber optic distributed temperature sensors (DTS). High resolution surface temperature profiles of the cooling panel were acquired under two steady experimental conditions, and compared with measurements performed with nearby thermocouples. The total measurement error of the DTS results presented has been estimated to be ±4.4 °C. The results presented herein show that these DTS can reasonably measure surface temperature when installed with the methods developed in this study. Through the analysis of the DTS data collected, the interesting behavior of the cooling panel was revealed, providing new insights on the system's behavior that may be beneficial to the design and optimization of such heat transfer devices. These sensors can also provide the measurement density necessary for validation efforts with highly-resolved prediction methods such as finite element analysis (FEA) or computational fluid dynamics (CFD).</p>

TEMPERATURE FIBER-OPTIC POINT SENSORS: COMMERCIAL TECHNOLOGIES AND INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

Abstract:Temperature fiber-optic point-sensors have been commercialized for about two decades. Among the various available optical sensing technologies, only few ones have lead to commercial successes. For instance, temperature could be measured by fluorescence decay time of a phosphorus compound excited with UV light; the higher the temperature, the faster the decay. Semiconductor band-gap thermal properties could also be used for temperature sensing. As an example for GaAs, the wavelengths transmission cut-off is increasing al linearly with temperature (~0.3 nm/°C). By analyzing with a spectrometer the reflected spectrum of a white-light source, temperature could be deduced. Interferometry-based technology such as Fabry-Perot is also a field-proven method for accurate measurement of temperature in various applications. In this case, the optical path of a Fabry-Perot cavity is changing with temperature (~20 nm/°C). Finally with fiber Bragg grating technology, a Bragg grating is written inside the fiber and reflects a given wavelength which is slightly shifting with temperature (~10 pm/°C). Several industrial applications involving temperature measurement contributed to the development of commercial optical fiber sensing technologies. Those include for instance the real-time temperature monitoring of hot spots in high-power transformers, of semiconductor plasma etchers or of microwave chemical reactors. Applications in the food industry or in the medical field are now also appearing.

Abstract:Distributed temperature sensors have been proposed for a wide variety of scientific and industrial applications and represent an important technology for modern infrastructures. Due to the range of potential applications, distributed fiber optic sensors based on spontaneous Raman scattering have been studied both theoretically and experimentally. This article presents the experimental evaluation of a distributed fiber optic temperature sensor based on spontaneous Raman scattering over a wide temperature range, from −196 °C to +400 °C. The sensor is implemented using a commercial OTDR, a standard EDFA amplifier and a standard optical fiber link. Besides, a special type of optical fiber for high temperature operation, featuring metallic coating, is also assessed as the sensor element. The integrity of the fibers following the exposure to the extreme temperatures is analyzed. The results provide values for the sensitivity, accuracy and resolution of the sensor in the wide range of temperatures.

Abstract:The reliability of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes is checked by comparing simulations with experimental data. A typical data set consists chiefly of velocity and temperature readings, both ideally having high spatial and temporal resolution to facilitate rigorous code validation. While high resolution velocity data is readily obtained through optical measurement techniques such as particle image velocimetry, it has proven difficult to obtain temperature data with similar resolution. Traditional sensors such as thermocouples cannot fill this role, but the recent development of distributed sensing based on Rayleigh scattering and swept-wave interferometry offers resolution suitable for CFD code validation work. Thousands of temperature measurements can be generated along a single thin optical fiber at hundreds of Hertz. Sensors function over large temperature ranges and within opaque fluids where optical techniques are unsuitable. But this type of sensor is sensitive to strain and humidity as well as temperature and so accuracy is affected by handling, vibration, and shifts in relative humidity. Such behavior is quite unlike traditional sensors and so unconventional installation and operating procedures are necessary to ensure accurate measurements. This paper demonstrates implementation of a Rayleigh scattering-type distributed temperature sensor in a thermal mixing experiment involving two air jets at 25 and 45 °C. We present criteria to guide selection of optical fiber for the sensor and describe installation setup for a jet mixing experiment. We illustrate sensor baselining, which links readings to an absolute temperature standard, and discuss practical issues such as errors due to flow-induced vibration. This material can aid those interested in temperature measurements having high data density and bandwidth for fluid dynamics experiments and similar applications. We highlight pitfalls specific to these sensors for consideration in experiment design and operation.

Abstract:A reflective fiber temperature sensor system based on the ZnO thin film is proposed. The transmittance spectra and temperature dependent optical property of the sensing head with ZnO thin film is investigated theoretically and experimentally, and the temperature resolution of similar to 1 degrees C is obtained in the temperature region of 300-773 K. The temperature sensing system is only related to the wavelength shift of transmittance spectra, and has a high stability without depending on the incident light intensity. This research results also indicate a fiber optical sensor with a broad temperature measurement range (10-1800 K) can be gained as a promising temperature sensing device, and can be applied into some extremely environments, such as aircraft, nuclear power station and power transmission system, and so on. Fiber Optic Sensors for Distributed and Quasi-distributed Temperature Measurement

Abstract:This work evaluates the performance of distributed fiber optic based-sensors during laser-induced hyperthermia in tissues-simulating phantoms. Standard single-mode Corning SMF-28 and LUNA high definition fiber optic sensor (HD-FOS) were used for distributed sensing with LUNA ODiSI-B interrogator. The performance of the sensors for a one- and two-dimensional temperature reconstruction was investigated. Also, the effect of LUNA ODiSI-B’s gauge length (GL) parameter on temperature reconstruction was assessed during this study. Temperature measurements of fiber Bragg grating array of 10 gratings were used as a reference. The obtained results show that temperature is significantly underestimated with high GL value (peak difference more than 12.0 °C), and smaller GL yields to more accurate temperature reconstruction for the HD-FOS fiber (peak difference <1.7 °C). The outcome of this analysis highlights the relevance of the sensors’ length and characteristics for accurate temperature monitoring in temperature gradient conditions, towards a proper selection of the adequate sensing system.

Abstract:Accurate temperature measurement needs in both research and industry have become more demanding and traditional temperature measurement technologies are struggling to keep up. Optical fiber thermometers have many unique advantages and are an option with much potential in the area of high temperature measurement. Research shows that fiber optic temperature sensors are capable of making accurate and precise measurements in a wide range of harsh conditions where other measurement technologies cannot and are a cost effective option in situations where traditional measurement technologies are currently used. Several typical high temperature fiber optic sensors are discussed in detail, focusing on the principle of operation, advantageous characteristics, and recent research developments, with the aim of aiding in further work with fiber optic thermometers.

Abstract:This paper presents a spatially distributed fiber-optic sensor system designed for demanding applications, like temperature measurements in the steel industry. The sensor system employed optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) to interrogate Rayleigh backscattering signals in single-mode optical fibers. Temperature measurements employing the OFDR system were compared with conventional thermocouple measurements, accentuating the spatially distributed sensing capability of the fiber-optic system. Experiments were designed and conducted to test the spatial thermal mapping capability of the fiber-optic temperature measurement system. Experimental simulations provided evidence that the optical fiber system could resolve closely spaced temperature features, due to the high spatial resolution and fast measurement rates of the OFDR system. The ability of the fiber-optic system to perform temperature measurements in a metal casting was tested by monitoring aluminum solidification in a sand mold. The optical fiber, encased in a stainless steel tube, survived both mechanically and optically at temperatures exceeding 700 °C. The ability to distinguish between closely spaced temperature features that generate information-rich thermal maps opens up many applications in the steel industry.

Abstract:The principles of operation, the design, and performance of a fiber-optic temperature-distribution sensor are discussed. The sensor uses optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) to detect temperature-induced changes of backscatter power at many separate locations in the fiber. In liquid-core fibers, a sensitivity of2.3 \times 10^{-2}dB/°C (0.54 percent° C-1) was observed. A measurement accuracy of 1°C with a spatial resoltuion of 1 m is attainable over a fiber length of 100 m.

Abstract:Distributed temperature sensors (DTS) measure temperatures by means of optical fibers. Those optoelectronic devices provide a continuous profile of the temperature distribution along the cable. Initiated in the 1980s, DTS systems have undergone significant improvements in the technology and the application scenario over the last decades. The main measuring principles are based on detecting the back-scattering of light, e.g., detecting via Rayleigh, Raman, Brillouin principles. The application domains span from traditional applications in the distributed temperature or strain sensing in the cables, to the latest smart grid initiative in the power systems, etc. In this paper, we present comparative reviews of the different DTS technologies, different applications, standard and upcoming, different manufacturers.

Abstract:This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study of a method of sensing temperature with optical fibers with the radiation thermally generated within the fiber. Using quartz fibers it is possible to read temperatures in the range from room temperature to over 1000 degrees C. We have demonstrated operation as low as 135 degrees C using nonoptimum fibers and detectors. The method also allows the determination of the location and length of a hot spot along the fiber. The purpose of this type of sensor is to monitor the development of hot spots in electrical machinery, such as generators and transformers, where conventional measurement techniques cannot be effectively applied. If such optical fibers can be incorporated in the manufacturing process of electrical equipment, these temperature monitors may contribute in avoiding catastrophic breakdown.

Abstract:An experimental study of a high temperature distributed optical fiber sensor based on Raman Optical-Time-Domain-Reflectometry (ROTDR) (up to 450 °C) and optical fibers with different coatings (polyimide/carbon, copper, aluminum and gold) is presented. Analysis of the distributed temperature sensor (DTS) measurements determined the most appropriate optical fiber to be used in high temperature industrial environment over long periods of time. To demonstrate the feasibility of this DTS for an industrial application, an optical cable was designed with the appropriate optical fiber and it was hermetically sealed to provide the required mechanical resistance and isolate the fiber from environmental degradations. This cable was used to measure temperature up to 360 °C of an industrial furnace during 7 days.

Abstract:Abstract. This paper describes a method to correct for the effect of solar radiation in atmospheric distributed temperature sensing (DTS) applications. By using two cables with different diameters, one can determine what temperature a zero diameter cable would have. Such a virtual cable would not be affected by solar heating and would take on the temperature of the surrounding air. With two unshielded cable pairs, one black pair and one white pair, good results were obtained given the general consensus that shielding is needed to avoid radiation errors (WMO, 2010). The correlations between standard air temperature measurements and air temperatures derived from both cables of colors had a high correlation coefficient (r2=0.99) and a RMSE of 0.38 °C, compared to a RMSE of 2.40 °C for a 3.0 mm uncorrected black cable. A thin white cable measured temperatures that were close to air temperature measured with a nearby shielded thermometer (RMSE of 0.61 °C). The temperatures were measured along horizontal cables with an eye to temperature measurements in urban areas, but the same method can be applied to any atmospheric DTS measurements, and for profile measurements along towers or with balloons and quadcopters.

Abstract:Two different types of fiber-optic sensors were used in an experiment to measure the heat flux in a simulated refractory lining material. The results obtained with a sensor based on fluorescence lifetime detection and a sensor based on the peak wavelength shift of a fiber Bragg grating are presented and compared. Analysis of the results of the measurements taken indicates that these fiber-optic sensor systems are capable of performing multipoint temperature, and thus the heat flux, measurements. An approach is also presented for the measurement of the temperature dependence of the conductivity coefficient of the materials concerned, using the sensor systems detailed.

Abstract:The paper deals with the overview of fiber optic methods suitable for temperature measurement and monitoring. The aim is to evaluate the current research of temperature measurements in the interval from temperature close to 0 up to 1000°C. Since the measuring chain is a functional combination of optical methods, optical fiber properties, and other photonic elements together with control electronic circuits, it is necessary to find a suitable compromise between the chosen measurement method, measuring range, accuracy, and resolution. Optical fiber sensors can be used in cases where standard electrical measurement methods cannot be used. These may be areas with high electrical and magnetic interference or critical areas. Therefore, there is intensive development of optical and fiber optic methods based on blackbody and greybody radiation, luminescence, fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), and interferometers.

Towards Improved Field Application of Using Distributed Temperature Sensing for Soil Moisture Estimation: A Laboratory Experiment

Abstract:The "dual probe heat pulse" (DPHP) method using actively heated fiber optic (AHFO) cables combined with distributed temperate sensing (DTS) technology has been developed for monitoring thermal properties and soil water content at the field scale. Field scale application, however, requires the use of robust and thicker fiber optic cables, corroborating the assumption of an infinite thin heat source in the evaluation process. We therefore included a semi-analytical solution of the heat transport equation into the evaluation procedure in order to consider the finite thermal properties of the heating cable without a calibration procedure to estimate effective thermal properties of the soil. To test this new evaluation procedure, we conducted a laboratory experiment and tested different heating scenarios to infer soil moisture from volumetric heat capacity. Estimates were made by analyzing the shift of the temperature amplitude at the sensing cable and the characteristics of the response heating curve. The results were compared with results from the calibrated infinite line source solution and in situ water content point measurements and showed a good approximation of thermal properties for strong and short heat pulses. Volumetric water content estimates are similarly accurate to the results of the calibrated infinite line source solution. Problems arose with the cable spacing and the resettlement process after burying the cable.
