Abstract:Axial U(1) dynamics are characterised by large OZI violations. Here we review the phenomenology of eta and eta-prime production and decay processes, and its connection to the anomalous glue that generates a large part of the masses of these pseudoscalar mesons.

Abstract:Topologically nontrivial fluctuations control the anomalous interactions for the $\eta$ and and $\eta \prime$ pseudoscalar mesons. We consider the anomalous interactions for mesons with higher spin, the heterochiral nonets with $J^{P C} = 1^{+ -}$ and $2^{- +}$. Under the approximation of a dilute gas of instantons, the mixing angle between non-strange and strange mesons decreases strongly as $J$ increases, and oscillates in sign. Anomalous interactions also open up new, rare decay channels. For glueballs, anomalous interactions indicate that the $X(2600)$ state is primarily gluonic.

Abstract:Glueballs are the most straightforward prediction of QCD, yet while they have likely been produced, none has been unequivocally identified. We pursue a backdoor approach through anomalies, and singularly the $\eta$ and $\eta$' which brings light to this irritating situation. In particular, we advocate to consider the full decay chain $J/\psi \rightarrow X \gamma , X \rightarrow \eta \eta'$ (into glue-rich states followed by glue-rich decays). We also suggest new BES III searches, namely for the $\pi_1$ into $\eta(') \pi^0$, (this would be the partner of their recently observed $\eta_1(1855)$). Another useful investigation would be for other channels (or semi-inclusive) $f_0 (1500)$ decays (see last section)

Abstract:Gluonic degrees of freedom play an important role in the masses of the eta and etaprime mesons. We discuss eta- and etaprime-nucleon and nucleus interactions where this glue may be manifest. Interesting processes being studied in experiments are etaprime production in proton-nucleon collisions close to threshold and possible eta-nucleus bound-states.

Abstract:Trigluon glueball might be a gateway to the gluonic meson realm. Here, we briefly report some of our results on this possibility. It was found that the exotic quantum number gluonic states, the oddballs, indeed deserve to pay more attention to, and hopefully the long-searched-for glueball could then be detected.

Abstract:Glueballs are the most obvious, but this far not fully tested prediction of Quantum Chromodynamics. The lowest expected glueball states, in particular $0^{++}$ states are difficult to characterize, since they share the quantum numbers of the "vacuum" and of a number of possible quark-antiquark states. In this paper, we argue that the more easily identifiable exotics provide us with strong hints on the way to pursue the chase, and in particular the relation with quantum anomalies and the $\eta$ and $\eta '$ states.

On the Dynamical Origin of the $η'$ Potential and the Axion Mass

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics responsible for generating the potential of the $\eta'$, the (would-be) Goldstone boson associated with the anomalous axial $U(1)$ symmetry of QCD. The standard lore posits that pure QCD dynamics generates a confining potential with a branched structure as a function of the $\theta$ angle, and that this same potential largely determines the properties of the $\eta'$ once fermions are included. Here we test this picture by examining a supersymmetric extension of QCD with a small amount of supersymmetry breaking generated via anomaly mediation. For pure $SU(N)$ QCD without flavors, we verify that there are $N$ branches generated by gaugino condensation. Once quarks are introduced, the flavor effects qualitatively change the strong dynamics of the pure theory. For $F$ flavors we find $|N-F|$ branches, whose dynamical origin is gaugino condensation in the unbroken subgroup for $F<N-1$, and in the dual gauge group for $F >N+1$. For the special cases of $F = N-1, N, N + 1$ we find no branches and the entire potential is consistent with being a one-instanton effect. The number of branches is a simple consequence of the selection rules of an anomalous $U(1)_R$ symmetry. We find that the $\eta'$ mass does not vanish in the large $N$ limit for fixed $F/N$, since the anomaly is non-vanishing. The same dynamics that is responsible for the $\eta'$ potential is also responsible for the axion potential. We present a simple derivation of the axion mass formula for an arbitrary number of flavors.

Abstract:We solve the B.S. equation of glueballs under instantaneous approximation. With the B.S wave function obtained we calculate the decay width of glueballs to two pseudoscalar mesons, $\Gamma(\pi\pi)$, $\Gamma(kk)$ and $\Gamma(\eta\eta)$. $\Gamma(\eta\eta^\prime)$ from QCD anomaly is also estimated.

Abstract:According to the constituent quark model (CQM), mesons and baryons are composed of qq̄ and qqq respectively. CQM provides a convenient framework in the classification of hadrons. Most of experimentally observed hadron states fit into this scheme quite neatly. Any states beyond CQM are labelled as ”non-conventional” hadrons. However, CQM is only a phenomenological model. It’s not derived from the underlying theory of the strong interaction—Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Hence the CQM spectrum is not necessarily the same as the physical spectrum in QCD, which remains ambiguous and elusive after decades of intensive theoretical and experimental exploration. No one is able to either prove or exclude the existence of these non-conventional states rigorously since nobody can solve the confinement issue in QCD now. Hadron physicists generally take a modest and practical attitude. If one supposes these non-conventional states exist, then the important issues are: (1) How to determine their characteristic quantum numbers and estimate their masses, production cross-section and decay widths reliably? (2) How and in which channels to dig out the signal from backgrounds and identify them experimentally? There are three classes of ”non-conventional” hadrons. The first class are mesons with ”exotic” J quantum numbers. The possible angular momentum, parity and charge conjugation parity of a neutral qq̄ meson are J = 0, 0−+, 1, 1−−, 1+−, · · · . In other words, a qq̄ meson can never have J = 0−−, 0+−, 1−+, 2+−, 3−+, · · · . Any state with these ”exotic” quantum numbers is clearly beyond CQM. We want to emphasize they are ”exotic” only in the context of CQM. One can construct color-singlet local operators to verify that these quantum numbers are allowed in QCD. ”Exotic” quantum numbers provide a powerful method for the experimental search of these ”non-conventional” states. In contrast, a qqq baryon in CQM exhausts all possible J , i.e., J = 12 ± , 3 2 ± , 52 ± , · · · . The second class are hadrons with exotic flavor content. One typical example is the Θ pentaquark. It was discovered in Kn channel with the quark content uudds̄. Such a state is clearly beyond CQM. Exotic flavor content is also an asset in the experimental search of them. The third class are hadrons which have ordinary quantum numbers but do not easily fit into CQM. Let’s take the J = 0 scalar mesons as an example. Below 2 GeV, we have σ, f0(980), f0(1370), f0(1500), f0(1710), f0(1790), f0(1810). Within CQM there are only two scalars within this mass range if we ignore the radial excitations. With radial excitations, CQM could accommodate four scalars at most. Clearly there is serious overpopulation of the scalar spectrum. If all the above states are genuine, the quark content of some of them is not qq̄. Overpopulation of the spectrum provides another useful window in the experimental search of non-conventional states. Glueballs are hadrons composed of gluons. Quenched lattice QCD simulation suggests the scalar glueball is the lightest. Its mass is around (1.5 ∼ 1.7) GeV. Glueballs with the other quantum numbers are high-lying. In the large Nc limit, glueballs decouple from the conventional qq̄ mesons [1]. Moreover, one gluon splits into two gluons freely in this limit. Hence the number of the gluon field inside glueballs is indefinite when Nc → ∞. In the real world with Nc = 3, glueballs mix with nearby qq̄ mesons with the same quantum numbers, which renders the experimental identification of scalar glueballs very difficult. Reviews of glueballs can be found in the previous chapters. In the following we discuss the other non-conventional hadrons according to their underlying quark gluon structure.

Abstract:The proton spin puzzle has inspired a vast programme of experiments and theoretical work challenging our understanding of QCD and its role in the structure of hadrons.The proton's internal spin structure is connected to chiral symmetry and, through gluon degrees of freedom in the flavour singlet channel, to the physics of the $\eta'$ meson. Why do quarks contribute just about one third of the proton's spin? Why are $\eta'$ mesons and their interactions so sensitive to gluonic degrees of freedom? We review the status of these topics and some key observables for forthcoming experiments.

Abstract:Experimental searches for pure glueball states have proven challenging and so far yielded no results. This is believed to occur because glueballs mix with the ordinary $q\bar q$ states with the same quantum numbers. We will discuss an alternative mechanism, the formation of the glueball-meson molecular states. We will argue that the wave functions of already observed excited meson states may contain a significant part due to such molecular states. We discuss the phenomenology of glueball-meson molecules and comment on a possible charmless component of the $XYZ$ states.

Amplitude analysis of vector-pseudoscalar final states at GlueX

Abstract:Excited vector mesons, some of which are predicted to include gluonic excitation in their wavefunctions, and certain classes of axial vector mesons, some of which are implicated in the decay of spin-exotic mesons, decay dominantly to vector-pseudoscalar final states. In particular, the axial vector $b_1(1235)$ decays dominantly to $\omega\pi$, and is produced copiously at the GlueX experiment. It provides a testing ground to explore strategies for amplitude analysis of further vector-pseudoscalar channels where the intermediate resonances may be harder to isolate. The formalism for amplitude analysis of $b_1^-$ production via charge exchange with a recoiling $\Delta^{++}$ is presented here, and compared with the proton recoil case. A strategy for a systematic analysis of reactions involving $\Delta^{++}$ recoil is outlined.

Abstract:The non-perturbative nature of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) at low energies has prompted the expectation that the gauge-bosons of QCD ? gluons ? might give rise to compound objects denoted as glueballs. Experimental signals for glueballs have represented a matter of research for various collaborations in the last decades; future research in this direction is a main endeavour planned by the PANDA Collaboration at FAIR. Hence in this article I review some of the outstanding issues in the glueball search, particularly with regard to the ground state ? the scalar glueball, and discuss the relevance for PANDA at FAIR.

Abstract:We show how the effective action of the Extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model (ENJL) can be defined in the presence of anomalies in a way that reproduces the flavour anomaly. This necessarily breaks Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) in the usual sense. The same method can be used to construct other chiral effective theories involving constituent quarks and spin-1 mesons that give the correct flavour anomaly. We also comment on how standard VMD is the root of this problem and those observed by previous authors in implementing VMD in the anomalous sector.

Abstract:The non-Abelian nature of QCD suggests that particles that have a gluon constituent, such as glueballs or hybrids, should exist. This paper presents a study of central meson production in the fixed target experiments WA76, WA91 and WA102 at the CERN Omega spectrometer at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s} = 12.7$, 23.8 and 29~GeV. A study of the resonance production cross section as a function of $\sqrt{s}$ shows which states are compatible with being produced by Double Pomeron Exchange (DPE). In these DPE processes, the difference in the transverse momentum between the exchange particles ($dP_T)$ can be used to select out known $q\overline q$ states from non-$q \overline q$ candidates. The distribution of the azimuthal angle ($\phi$) between the two exchange particles suggests that the Pomeron transforms like a non-conserved vector current. Finally there is evidence from an analysis of the the decay modes of the scalar states observed, that the lightest scalar glueball manifests itself through the mixing with nearby $q\overline q$ states.

The ${\Bbb Z}_2$ anomaly in some chiral gauge theories

Abstract:We revisit the simplest Bars-Yankielowicz (BY) model (the $\psi\eta$ model), starting from a model with an additional Dirac pair of fermions in the fundamental representation, together with a complex color-singlet scalar $\phi$ coupled to them through a Yukawa interaction. This model possesses a color-flavor-locked 1-form ${\Bbb Z}_N$ symmetry, due to the intersection of the color $SU(N)$ and two nonanomalous $U(1)$ groups. In the bulk, the model reduces to the $\psi\eta$ model studied earlier when $\phi$ acquires a nonzero vacuum expectation value and the extra fermions pair up, get massive and decouple (thus we will call our extended theory as the ``X-ray model"), while it provides a regularization of the $\Bbb Z_2$ fluxes needed to study the $\Bbb Z_2$ anomaly. The anomalies involving the 1-form ${\Bbb Z}_N$ symmetry reduce, for $N$ even, exactly to the mixed ${\Bbb Z}_2$ anomaly found earlier in the $\psi\eta$ model. The present work is a first significant step to clarify the meaning of the mixed ${\Bbb Z}_2-[{\Bbb Z}_N^{(1)}]^2$ anomaly found in the $\psi\eta$ and in other BY and Georgi-Glashow type $SU(N)$ models with even $N$.

Abstract:Dark Yang-Mills sectors that confine to form stable composite states, known as glueballs, have been traditionally proposed as a potential explanation for cosmological Dark Matter (DM). Earlier studies have established viability of the lightest scalar glueball as a possible DM candidate. In this work, we explore a whole class of effective composite sectors in the confined Yang-Mills regime featuring an additional pseudoscalar glueball state. We also investigate the role of effective interactions of the dark glueball sector with the visible sectors via higher-dimensional operators primarily focusing on dimension-8 couplings of glueballs to photons and gluons. We stress the remarkable similarities between the phenomenology of such glueball effective theories and Standard Model extensions featuring Axion-Like Particles (ALPs). Hence, one deals with a new class of composite Glueball ALPs (or GALPs) coupled to photons and/or nucleons in a wide mass range, from sub-eV to the Planck scale, yielding viable DM candidates that can be probed by astrophysical and cosmological observations.

Abstract:We predict glueball/oddball resonances lying on the pomeron/odderon trajectories. A simple new form of the trajectories, with threshold and asymptotic behaviour required by analyticity and unitarity, is proposed. The parameters of these (pomeron and odderon) trajectories are fitted to the data on high-energy elastic proton-proton scattering. The fitted trajectories are extrapolated to the resonance region to predict masses and widths of glueballs and oddballs. The (pomeron and odderon) trajectories may be used to calculate processes of central exclusive diffraction (CED).

Ordinary and exotic mesons in the extended Linear Sigma Model

Abstract:The extended Linear Sigma Model (eLSM) is a hadronic model based on the global symmetries of QCD and the corresponding explicit, anomalous, and spontaneous breaking patterns. In its basic three-flavor form, its mesonic part contains the dilaton/glueball as well as the nonets of (pseudo)scalar and (axial-)vector mesons, thus chiral symmetry is linearly realized. In the chiral limit and neglecting the chiral anomaly, only one term -- within the dilaton potential -- breaks dilatation invariance. Spontaneous symmetry breaking is implemented by a generalization of the Mexican-hat potential, with explicit symmetry breaking responsible for its tilting. The overall mesonic phenomenology up to 2 GeV is in agreement with the PDG compilation of masses and decay widths. The eLSM was enlarged to include other conventional quark-antiquark nonets (pseudovector and orbitally excited vector mesons, (axial-)tensor mesons, etc.), as well as two nonets of hybrid mesons, the lightest one with exotic quantum numbers $J^{PC} = 1^{-+}$ not allowed for $\bar{q}q$ objects such as the resonance $\pi_1(1600)$ and the recently discovered $\eta_1(1855)$. In doing so, different types of chiral multiplets are introduced: heterochiral and homochiral multiplets, which differ in the way they transform under chiral transformations. Moreover, besides the scalar glueball, the tensor, the pseudoscalar and the vector glueballs were coupled to the eLSM: the scalar $f_0(1710)$ turns out to be mostly gluonic, the tensor glueball couples strongly to vector mesons, and the pseudoscalar glueball couples can be assigned to $X(2370)$ or $X(2600)$. The eLSM contains chiral partners on an equal footing and is therefore well suited for studies of chiral symmetry restoration at nonzero temperature and densities. The QCD phase diagram and the location of the critical endpoint were investigated within this framework.
