Abstract:Gluonic degrees of freedom play an important role in the masses of the eta and etaprime mesons. We discuss eta- and etaprime-nucleon and nucleus interactions where this glue may be manifest. Interesting processes being studied in experiments are etaprime production in proton-nucleon collisions close to threshold and possible eta-nucleus bound-states.

Abstract:The $\eta'$ which is an $SU(3)_F$ singlet state can contain a pure gluon component, gluonium. We examine this possibility by analysing all available experimental data. It is pointed out that the $\eta'$ gluonic component may be as large as 26%. We also show that the amplitude for $J/\psi -> \eta'\gamma$ decay obtains a notable contribution from gluonium.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the gamma p -> p eta eta reaction within an effective Lagrangian approach and isobar model. We consider the contributions from the intermediate N*(1535), N*(1650), N*(1710), and N*(1720) isobars which finally decay to the N eta state. It is found that the excitation of the N*(1535) dominates this reaction close to threshold and rho meson exchange plays the most important role for the excitation of nucleon resonances. Therefore, this reaction offers a potentially good place to study the properties of nucleon resonances and their couplings to the N rho channel. Predictions for angular distributions and invariant mass spectra of final particles are also presented for future comparison with data.

Abstract:The proton spin puzzle has inspired a vast programme of experiments and theoretical work challenging our understanding of QCD and its role in the structure of hadrons.The proton's internal spin structure is connected to chiral symmetry and, through gluon degrees of freedom in the flavour singlet channel, to the physics of the $\eta'$ meson. Why do quarks contribute just about one third of the proton's spin? Why are $\eta'$ mesons and their interactions so sensitive to gluonic degrees of freedom? We review the status of these topics and some key observables for forthcoming experiments.

Abstract:We study the influence and interplay of initial state and final state effects in the dynamics of small systems, focusing on azimuthal correlations at different multiplicities. To this end we introduce a new model, matching the classical Yang-Mills dynamics of pre-equilibrium gluon fields (IP-GLASMA) to a perturbative QCD based parton cascade for the final state evolution (BAMPS) on an event-by-event basis. Depending on multiplicity of the event, we see transverse momentum dependent signatures of the initial, but also the final state in azimuthal correlation observables, such as v2 {2PC} (pT ). In low-multiplicity events, initial state correlations dominate for transverse momenta pT > 2 GeV, whereas in high-multiplicity events and at low momenta final state interactions dominate and initial state correlations strongly affect v2 {2PC} (pT ) for pT > 2 GeV as well as the pT integrated v2 {2PC}. Nearly half of the final pT integrated v2 {2PC} is contributed by the initial state in low-multiplicity events, whereas in high-multiplicity the share is much less. Based on Ref. [1], we are now able to carry out a systematic multiplicity scan, probing the dynamics on the border of initial state dominated to final state dominated but not yet hydrodynamic regime.

Abstract:We critically reexamine the formalism for treating the leading-twist contributions from the two-gluon Fock components occurring in hard processes that involve eta and eta' mesons and establish a consistent set of conventions for the definition of the gluon distribution amplitudes, the anomalous dimensions as well as the projector of a two-gluon state onto an eta or eta' state. We calculate the eta, eta'--photon transition form factor to order alpha_s and show the cancellation of the collinear and UV singularities explicitly. An estimate of the lowest Gegenbauer coefficients of the gluon and quark distribution amplitudes is obtained from a fit to the eta, eta'--photon transition form factor data. In order to elucidate the role of the two-gluon Fock component further, we analyze electroproduction of eta, eta' mesons and the g*g* eta (eta') vertex.

Abstract:We discuss the topics mentioned in the title by scrutinizing and improving the $0^{-+}$ di-gluonia sum rules within the standard SVZ-expansion at N2LO without instantons. First, we reconsider the estimate of the slope of the topological charge $\chi'(0)=24.3(3.4)$ MeV which imply $0.144(5) [\rm data: 0.145(13)]$ for the first moment of the polarized proton structure function (proton spin) and $G_A^{(0)} = 0.337(50) [\rm data=0.330(39)]$ for the singlet form factor of the axial current. Second, we work with high degree moments and parametrize the spectral function beyond the minimal duality ansatz: "One resonance plus QCD continuum" to get the $0^{-+}$ di-gluonia spectra. Then, we obtain three groups of gluonia: The familiar light $\eta_1$ [singlet gluon component of the $\eta'(958)$] with $[M_{\eta_1},f_{\eta_1}]= [825 , 905(72)]$; The two new medium gluonia with $M_{P_{1a}}=1338(112)$ MeV and $[M_{P_{1b}}=1462(117) $ MeV or their mean $[M_{P_1},f_{P_1}]=[1397(81),594(144)]$ MeV which support the gluonium nature of the candidate $\eta(1405)$ and may bring a small gluon piece to the $\eta(1295)$; Their 1st radial excitations: $M_{P'_{1a}}=1508(226)$ MeV and $M_{P'_{1b}}=1553(139)$ MeV with their mean: $[M_{P'_1},f_{P'_1}]=[1541(118),205(282)]$ MeV which may be identified (up to some eventual mixings with $\bar qq$ states) with the $\eta(1475,1700)$ states; The heavy gluonium with : $[M_{P_2}, f_{P_2}]=[2751(140),500(43)]$ MeV comparable with the lattice results. One can remark the (natural) one to one correspondence between the pseudoscalar gluonia and their chiral scalar analogue from Ref.1: $\sigma(1)\to \eta_1;~G_1(1.55)\to P_{1}; [\sigma'(1.1),G'(1.56)]\to P'_{1a,1b};~G_2(3)\to P_2$ which is mainly due to the importance of QCD PT in the sum rule analysis that are almost equal in these two channels. Results for the spectra are in Table 2.

On the Dynamical Origin of the $η'$ Potential and the Axion Mass

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics responsible for generating the potential of the $\eta'$, the (would-be) Goldstone boson associated with the anomalous axial $U(1)$ symmetry of QCD. The standard lore posits that pure QCD dynamics generates a confining potential with a branched structure as a function of the $\theta$ angle, and that this same potential largely determines the properties of the $\eta'$ once fermions are included. Here we test this picture by examining a supersymmetric extension of QCD with a small amount of supersymmetry breaking generated via anomaly mediation. For pure $SU(N)$ QCD without flavors, we verify that there are $N$ branches generated by gaugino condensation. Once quarks are introduced, the flavor effects qualitatively change the strong dynamics of the pure theory. For $F$ flavors we find $|N-F|$ branches, whose dynamical origin is gaugino condensation in the unbroken subgroup for $F<N-1$, and in the dual gauge group for $F >N+1$. For the special cases of $F = N-1, N, N + 1$ we find no branches and the entire potential is consistent with being a one-instanton effect. The number of branches is a simple consequence of the selection rules of an anomalous $U(1)_R$ symmetry. We find that the $\eta'$ mass does not vanish in the large $N$ limit for fixed $F/N$, since the anomaly is non-vanishing. The same dynamics that is responsible for the $\eta'$ potential is also responsible for the axion potential. We present a simple derivation of the axion mass formula for an arbitrary number of flavors.

Abstract:We calculate spectrum of diffractively produced gluons in onium-heavy nucleus collisions at high energies. We show that it exhibits a characteristic dependence on nucleus atomic number A and energy/rapidity. We argue that this dependence offers a unique possibility for determining the low-x structure of nuclear matter. Applications to RHIC, LHC and EIC experimental programs are discussed.

Abstract:The axion, originally postulated by Peccei and Quinn to solve the strong CP problem, has become of great interest in particle and astroparticle phenomenology. Yet it has a problem. It is widely assumed that the axion leaves the nonperturbative features of QCD, such as the axial anomaly and chiral symmetry breaking, unscathed. This is, however, not the case. It turns out that the anomalous coupling of the axion to the gauge bosons can be integrated partially, leaving behind a path integral extending over topologically trivial gauge potentials only. This has far reaching consequences. We conclude that the Peccei-Quinn axion extension of the Standard Model is not a viable theory.

The Π−p→a0−ηp Reaction in an Effective Lagrangian Model

Abstract:In this work, we perform a study of the pi(-) p -> a(0)(-) eta p reaction within an effective Lagrangian approach and isobar model. In our model, we consider the excitation of the N* and Delta* resonances in the intermediate states and background terms. Based on our model, it is found that this reaction is dominated by the production of the N (1535) in the near threshold region. And the contributions from other well-established N* or Delta* resonances only play minor roles. Besides, we discuss the possibility of verifying the existence of a narrow nucleon resonance N(1685)/N (1700) proposed by some recent works in the present reaction. With adopting different quantum numbers, we find that it may contribute significantly in this reaction. Thus this reaction may provide a good platform to study the properties of nucleon resonances, e.g., N (1535) and N(1685)/N (1700), which couple strongly with the eta N channel. To compare with future experiments, the predictions of the total cross sections, the angular distributions, and invariant mass spectrums of final particles are also presented. Furthermore, the off-shell effects due to high-spin states are also discussed.

Abstract:The fundamental theory of the strong interaction -- quantum chromodynamics (QCD) -- provides the foundational framework with which to describe and understand the key properties of atomic nuclei. A deep understanding of the explicit role of quarks and gluons in nuclei remains elusive however, as these effects have thus far been well-disguised by confinement effects in QCD which are encapsulated by a successful description in terms of effective hadronic degrees of freedom. The observation of the EMC effect has provided an enduring indication for explicit QCD effects in nuclei, and points to the medium modification of the bound protons and neutrons in the nuclear medium. Understanding the EMC effect is a major challenge for modern nuclear physics, and several key questions remain, such as understanding its flavor, spin, and momentum dependence. This manuscript provides a contemporary snapshot of our understanding of the role of QCD in nuclei and outlines possible pathways in experiment and theory that will help deepen our understanding of nuclei in the context of QCD.

Abstract:We numerically study the effects of a high gluon density at small x on the evolution of the gluon distribution function in both hadrons and nuclei. Using a newly derived, Wilson renormalization group-based evolution equation which includes n to 1 gluon ladder fusion, we find a significant reduction in the nuclear gluon distribution function for large nuclei at zero impact parameter at energies relevant for BNL RHIC and CERN LHC experiments. Amplitude analysis of vector-pseudoscalar final states at GlueX

Abstract:Excited vector mesons, some of which are predicted to include gluonic excitation in their wavefunctions, and certain classes of axial vector mesons, some of which are implicated in the decay of spin-exotic mesons, decay dominantly to vector-pseudoscalar final states. In particular, the axial vector $b_1(1235)$ decays dominantly to $\omega\pi$, and is produced copiously at the GlueX experiment. It provides a testing ground to explore strategies for amplitude analysis of further vector-pseudoscalar channels where the intermediate resonances may be harder to isolate. The formalism for amplitude analysis of $b_1^-$ production via charge exchange with a recoiling $\Delta^{++}$ is presented here, and compared with the proton recoil case. A strategy for a systematic analysis of reactions involving $\Delta^{++}$ recoil is outlined.

Gluonic gravitational form factors of the proton

Abstract:The gravitational form factors (GFFs) are a fundamental and elegant way to describe the structure of nucleons and nuclei. Their Fourier transform allows a description of the spatial distribution of the mass, angular momentum, pressure, and shear force densities for both quarks and gluons in the nucleon. While previous investigations predominantly focused on the proton electromagnetic form factors (EMFFs) leading to the charge and magnetization distributions determination, the current emphasis has shifted towards expanding our understanding of the gravitational form factors of quarks and gluons where little is known. In particular, more recently, the proton {\it gluonic} GFFs have been the target of an intensive investigation at Jefferson Lab. This endeavor, is not without its challenges, particularly in navigating the complexities associated with the near-threshold region. Nevertheless, it provides a bedrock for future nucleon and nuclei gluonic structure studies at the future EIC. In this talk, I will focus on the recent results of $J/\psi$ photoproduction near-threshold on the proton at Jefferson Lab to determine, in particular, the elusive {\it gluonic} gravitational form factors. We discuss the caveats of their extraction in the threshold region and mention the complementary measurements of $\Upsilon$ at the EIC critical to access the trace anomaly and gain insight into the origin of the nucleon mass.

Abstract:The Coulomb effect in high energy antiproton-nucleus elastic and inelastic scattering from C-12 and O-16 is studied in the framework of Glauber multiple scattering theory for live kinetic energies ranged from 0.23 to 1.83 GeV. A microscopic shell-model nuclear wave functions, Woods-Saxon single-particle wave functions, and experimental (p) over barN amplitudes are used in the calculations. The results show that the Coulomb effect is of paramount importance for filling up the dips of differential cross sections. We claim that the present result for inelastic scattering of antiproton-C-12 is sufficiently reliable to be a guide for measurements in the very near future. We also believe that antiproton nucleus elastic and inelastic scattering may produce new information on both the nuclear structure and the antinucleon-nucleon interaction, in particular the (p) over bar -neutron interaction.

Abstract:Using the expression of the dynamical gluon mass obtained through the operator product expansion we discuss the relevance of gluon mass effects in the decays V -> hadrons (V = J/Psi, Upsilon). Relativistic and radiative corrections are also introduced to calculate alpha_s(m_c) and alpha_s(m_b) comparing them with other values available in the literature. The effects of dynamical gluon masses are negligible for Upsilon decay but important for J/Psi decay.
