Abstract:In this brief note it is shown that the linear matrix inequalities that result from the application of interconnection and damping assignment passivity-based control to general linear time-invariant systems are feasible if and only if the system is stabilizable. A very simple proof of this fact is given that, in contrast to previous results, does not require the assumption that the system has no uncontrollable pole at s = 0.

Abstract:This paper deals with the problem of disturbance attenuation via output feedback with internal stability for Lipschitz nonlinear systems. The main result is given in terms of the solutions of a Riccati equation and a Hamilton-Jacobi inequality. The method is shown to be suitable for linearized systems and, locally, for some general nonlinear systems as well. A numerical example is studied to show the feasibility of the presented approach

Abstract:In this article, we study feedback linearization problems for nonlinear differential‐algebraic control systems (DACSs). We consider two kinds of feedback equivalences, namely, external feedback equivalence, which is defined (locally) on the whole generalized state space, and internal feedback equivalence, which is defined on the locally maximal controlled invariant submanifold (i.e., on the set where solutions exist). We define a notion called explicitation with driving variables, which is a class of ordinary differential equation control systems (ODECSs) attaching to a given DACS. Then we give necessary and sufficient conditions for both internal and external feedback linearization problems of the DACS. We show that the feedback linearizability of the DACS is closely related to the involutivity of the linearizability distributions of the explicitation systems. Finally, we illustrate the results of the by an academic example and a constrained mechanical system.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the stabilization of differential inclusions. By using control Lyapunov functions, a design method of homogeneous controllers for differential equation systems is first addressed. Then, the design method is developed to two classes of differential inclusions without uncertainties: homogeneous differential inclusions and nonhomogeneous ones. By means of homogeneous domination theory, a homogeneous controller for differential inclusions with uncertainties is constructed. Comparing to the existing results in the literature, an improved formula of homogeneous controllers is proposed, and the difficulty of the controller design for uncertain differential inclusions is reduced. Finally, two simulation examples are given to verify the preset design. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, we present necessary and sufficient conditions under which a linear time-invariant (LTI) system is state feedback equivalent to a negative imaginary (NI) system. More precisely, we show that a minimal LTI strictly proper system can be rendered NI using full state feedback if and only if it can be output transformed into a system, which has relative degree less than or equal to two and is weakly minimum phase. We also considered the problems of state feedback equivalence to output strictly negative imaginary systems and strongly strict negative imaginary systems. Then we apply the NI state feedback equivalence result to robustly stabilize an uncertain system with strictly negative imaginary uncertainty. A real-world example is provided to illustrate the proposed results, for the purpose of stabilizing an uncertain system.

Abstract:Using the differential geometric control theory, we present the necessary and sufficient conditions under which an analytic affine nonlinear system with multiple inputs is equivalent to, via state transformation without feedback, a kind of extended Brunovsky canonical form. The proof is based on a new technique for applying the Frobenius Theorem in a more convenient way by converting a set of quasilinear partial differential equations with the same main portion to a set of homogeneous linear partial differential equations.

Abstract:New approaches are proposed in the problem of constructing equivalent scalar differential equations for multidimensional nonlinear systems of control theory, as well as in the problem of constructing equivalent Hamiltonian systems for nonlinear Lurie equations (scalar differential equations containing derivatives of only even orders). The conditions for the solvability of the corresponding problems are studied, and new formulas for the transition to equivalent equations and systems are proposed. For the Lurie equations, the proposed approaches are based on the transition from the linear part to the normal forms of the corresponding Hamiltonian systems with a subsequent transformation of the resulting system. Calculation formulas and algorithms are obtained, and their efficiency is illustrated by examples.

Abstract:The theory of feedback integrators is extended to handle mechanical systems with nonholonomic constraints with or without symmetry, so as to produce numerical integrators that preserve the nonholonomic constraints as well as other conserved quantities. To extend the feedback integrators, we develop a suitable extension theory for nonholonomic systems, and also a corresponding reduction theory for systems with symmetry. It is then applied to various nonholonomic systems such as the Suslov problem on SO(3), the knife edge, the Chaplygin sleigh, the vertical rolling disk, the roller racer, the Heisenberg system, and the nonholonomic oscillator.

Abstract:We provide an amendment to the first theorem of "Control Contraction Metrics: Convex and Intrinsic Criteria for Nonlinear Feedback Design" by Manchester & Slotine in the form of an additional technical condition required to show integrability of differential control signals. This technical condition is shown to be satisfied under the original assumptions if the input matrix is constant rank, and also if the strong conditions for a CCM hold. However a simple counterexample shows that if the input matrix drops rank, then the weaker conditions of the original theorem may not imply stabilizability of all trajectories. The remaining claims and illustrative examples of the paper are shown to remain valid with the new condition.

Abstract:Globally asymptotical stabilisation for a class of feedback linearisable differential inclusion systems with disturbances is dealt with in this study. A systematic method for constructing the control Lyapunov function (CLF) is presented by solving the Lyapunov equation. Sufficient and necessary conditions for a quadratic CLF to be a CLF for single-input and multi-input systems are acquired, respectively. Then, continuous state feedback laws are designed for corresponding systems. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by two simulation examples. © 2011 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Abstract:After introducing commutativity concept and summarizing the relevant literature, this work is focused on the commutativity of feedback conjugates. It is already known that a linear time-varying differential system describing a single input-single output dynamical system is always commutative with its constant gain feedback pairs. In this article, it is proven that among the time-varying feedback conjugates of a linear time-varying system, constant feedback conjugates are the only commutative feedback pairs and any of the time-varying feedback conjugates cannot constitutes a commutative pair of a linear time-varying system.

Abstract:One of the most popular methods of controlling dynamical systems is feedback. It can be used without acquiring detailed knowledge of the underlying system. In this work, we study the stability of fractional-order linear difference equations under feedback. The stability results are derived for an arbitrary feedback time $\tau$. We study the cases of $\tau=1$ and $\tau=2$ in further detail. The extension to the stability of fixed points under feedback for nonlinear fractional order difference equations with fixed points $ x_{*}=0$ is also carried out.

Abstract:The exact feedback linearization of general nonlinear differential algebraic systems (NDAS) is investigated in this paper. First, by taking the algebraic variable as virtual inputs, we introduce a recursion inverse algorithm to construct a right inverse system for NDAS. A state feedback linearization control law is constructed based on the inverse system. As an application of the results got in this paper, an excitation control strategy is proposed for a three-node power system with nonlinear load. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the control scheme.

Abstract:The tracking control of linear differential inclusion is discussed. First, the definition of uniformly ultimate boundedness for linear differential inclusion is given. Then, a feedback law is constructed by using the convex hull Lyapunov function. The sufficient condition is given to guarantee the tracking error system uniformly ultimately bounded. Finally, a numerical example is simulated to illustrate the effectiveness of this control design.

Abstract:In order to establish criteria for the controllability of general nonlinear stochastic systems, the sufficient condition for the complete controllability of a class of neutral nonlinear integrodifferential stochastic systems is determined by introducing a controllability operator, constructing suitable feedback control and using the Banach fixed-point theorem. The results show that the systems are completely controllable when the Lipchitz coefficients of nonlinear and neutral terms are both small enough. The applicability of the obtained results is finally verified by an example.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce novel duality relations that complement the well-known invariant ellipsoids method. These relations yield ellipsoids with newly established geometrical interpretations and connections to linear system norms. The established duality leads to the optimal synthesis results for state-feedback control, filtering, and output-feedback control problems in the presence of bounded disturbances. The proposed output-feedback control solution is demonstrated to be optimal and surpass prior sub-optimal results.
