A Modern View of Perturbative QCD and Application to Heavy Quarkonium Systems

Abstract:Perturbative QCD has made significant progress over the last few decades. In the first part, we present an introductory overview of perturbative QCD as seen from a modern viewpoint. We explain the relation between purely perturbative predictions and predictions based on Wilsonian effective field theories. We also review progress of modern computational technologies and discuss intersection with frontiers of mathematics. Analyses of singularities in Feynman diagrams play key roles towards developing a unified view. In the second part, we discuss application of perturbative QCD, based on the formulation given in the first part, to heavy quarkonium systems and the interquark force between static color charges. We elucidate impacts on order Lambda_QCD physics in the quark mass and interquark force, which used to be considered inaccessible by perturbative QCD.

Perturbative Quantum Field Theory in the String-Inspired Formalism

Abstract:We review the status and present range of applications of the ``string-inspired'' approach to perturbative quantum field theory. This formalism offers the possibility of computing effective actions and S-matrix elements in a way which is similar in spirit to string perturbation theory, and bypasses much of the apparatus of standard second-quantized field theory. Its development was initiated by Bern and Kosower, originally with the aim of simplifying the calculation of scattering amplitudes in quantum chromodynamics and quantum gravity. We give a short account of the original derivation of the Bern-Kosower rules from string theory. Strassler's alternative approach in terms of first-quantized particle path integrals is then used to generalize the formalism to more general field theories, and, in the abelian case, also to higher loop orders. A considerable number of sample calculations are presented in detail, with an emphasis on quantum electrodynamics.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the effective field theory perspective on modern physics through the lens of the quantum theory of gravitational interaction. The historical part argues that the search for a theory of quantum gravity stimulated the change in outlook that characterizes the modern approach to the Standard Model of particle physics and General Relativity. We present some landmarks covering a long period, i.e., from the beginning of the 1930s until 1994, when, according to Steven Weinberg, the modern bottom-up approach to General Relativity began. Starting from the first attempt to apply the quantum field theory techniques to perturbatively quantize Einstein's theory, we explore its developments and interaction with the top-down approach encoded by String Theory. In the last part of the paper, we focus on this last approach to describe the relationship between our modern understanding of String Theory and Effective Field Theory in today's panorama. To this end, the non-historical part briefly explains the modern concepts of moduli stabilization and Swampland to understand another change in focus that explains the present framework where some string theorists move.

Abstract:The discovery of a duality between Anti-de Sitter spaces (AdS) and Conformal Field Theories (CFT) has led to major advances in our understanding of quantum field theory and quantum gravity. String theory methods and AdS/CFT correspondence maps provide new ways to think about difficult condensed matter problems. String theory methods based on the AdS/CFT correspondence allow us to transform problems so they have weak interactions and can be solved more easily. They can also help map problems to different descriptions, for instance mapping the description of a fluid using the Navier–Stokes equations to the description of an event horizon of a black hole using Einstein's equations. This textbook covers the applications of string theory methods and the mathematics of AdS/CFT to areas of condensed matter physics. Bridging the gap between string theory and condensed matter, this is a valuable textbook for students and researchers in both fields.

Abstract:Recent progress in the computation of one-loop gluon amplitudes is reviewed. These methods were originally derived from superstring theory and are significantly more efficient than conventional Feynman rules. With these methods, explicit computations can be performed beyond those achieved by traditional methods.

Abstract:Recently, Witten proposed a topological string theory in twistor space that is dual to a weakly coupled gauge theory. In this lectures we will discuss aspects of the twistor string theory. Along the way we will learn new things about Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes. The string theory sheds light on Yang-Mills perturbation theory and leads to new methods for computing Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes.

Abstract:This is a written version of the opening talk at the 6th International Workshop on Chiral Dynamics, at the University of Bern, Switzerland, July 6, 2009, to be published in the proceedings of the Workshop. In it, I reminisce about the early development of effective field theories of the strong interactions, comment briefly on some other applications of effective field theories, and then take up the idea that the Standard Model and General Relativity are the leading terms in an effective field theory. Finally, I cite recent calculations that suggest that the effective field theory of gravitation and matter is asymptotically safe.

Conformal Perturbation Theory and Tachyon-Dilaton Eschatology via String Fields

Abstract:We analyze deformations of two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) from the perspective of classical bosonic closed string field theory (SFT). The latter can be viewed as a version of Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) improved conformal perturbation theory, where the renormalization scheme is defined through the choice of string vertices in the construction of SFT. Furthermore, the CFT data at the RG fixed point can be recovered from the spectrum and amplitudes of string field fluctuations. As applications, we construct the Horowitz-Polchinski "string star" solution in SFT, and a solution of tachyon-dilaton condensation that deforms the noncompact boson to minimal models by creating a pair of "Runkel-Watts walls".

Abstract:A brief review of the status of duality symmetries in string theory is presented. The evidence is accumulating rapidly that an enormous group of duality symmetries, including perturbative T dualities and non-perturbative S-dualities, underlies string theory. It is my hope that an understanding of these symmetries will suggest the right way to formulate non-perturbative string theory. Whether or not this hope is realized, it has already been demonstrated that this line of inquiry leads to powerful new tools for understanding gauge theories and new evidence for the uniqueness of string theory, as well as deep mathematical results.

Duality in Gauge Theory, Gravity and String Theory

Abstract:Einstein's theory in the vacuum was recently shown to possess an $SO(2)$ duality invariance, which is broken by coupling to matter. Duality invariance can be restored by enlarging the phase space of the theory to allow for violations of the algebraic Bianchi identity. We show that in cases where the matter content can be understood as a component of the torsion tensor duality can be restored and we compute the corresponding duality current. We consider the case of NS-NS gravity as an example and find that the duality current is given by the divergence of the axion. In the linearized approximation of the low energy heterotic string theory these results imply that duality of the generalized Riemann curvature tensor implements Riemannian, axion-dilaton and electro-magnetic dualities simultaneously.

Abstract:In recent years, theoretical calculations of scattering amplitudes face a huge challenge because experiment data coming from colliders, such as Large Hadron Collider (LHC), become more and more accurate. The traditional Feynman diagram technique can not deal with the problem because the difficulties involving gauge interaction. To solve the problem, theorists have made many studies. Through investigations of last fourteen years, we have achieved many important progresses, such as on-shell recursion relation, the Cachazo-He-Yuan framework for scattering amplitudes of massless particles, the geometric Grassmannian and Amplituhedron frameworks for N =4 SYM planar amplitudes, etc. These new methods can calculate tree-level and loop scattering amplitudes much faster than the traditional method, so have improved our ability to analyze background contributions from Standard Model and find possible signals of new physics by comparing with experiment data. These breakthroughs have some common features. These features, such as the focus of on-shell properties, the right choice of prescription variables and the emphasize of the analytic properties of scattering amplitudes, hint a possible new formalism of quantum field theory, which is very different from traditional Lagrangian formalism. In this article, we give a brief discussion of this topic.

Abstract:String theory has been initially derived from motivations coming from strong interaction phenomenology,but its application faced deep conceptual and practical difficulties. The strong interactions found their theoretical foundation elsewhere, namely on QCD, the quantum gauge field theory of quarks and gluons. Recently, the Gauge/Gravity correspondence allowed to initiate a reformulation of the connection between strings and gauge field theories, avoiding some of the initial drawbacks and opening the way to new insights on the gauge theory at strong coupling and eventually QCD. Among others, the recent applications of the Gauge/Gravity correspondence to the formation of the QGP, the quark-gluon plasma, in heavy-ion reactions seem to provide a physically interesting insight on phenomenological features of the reactions. In these lectures we will give a simplified introduction to those aspects of string theory which, at the origin and in the recent developments, are connected to strong interactions, for those students which are starting to learn QCD and QGP physics from an experimental or phenomenological point of view.

Abstract:Flat-space physics is highly constrained by basic principles such as Lorentz invariance, locality, unitarity and causality. This is neatly seen in the structure of scattering amplitudes. For processes occurring in an expanding background we do not have the same level of understanding, not even in the case of de Sitter space. In this talk I provide a brief account of some of the recent efforts which aim to fill this gap. I will discuss some novel results in the understanding of the analytic structure of the Bunch-Davies wavefunction(al) of the universe in the perturbative regime, some fundamental constraints that it ought to satisfy as well as some general insights coming from an underlying combinatorial structure.

Vacuum Energy in Non-Supersymmetric Quasi-Realistic Heterotic-String Vacua with Fixed Moduli

Abstract:Recently, Baykara, Tarazi and Vafa discussed the existence of quasicrystalline string vacua that contain a single neutral moduli, the dilaton, and studied compactifications of the non-supersymmetric $SO(16)\times SO(16)$ heterotic-string on these spaces. We discuss a specific class of quasi-realistic string vacua with similar properties that has been known since the late eighties and analyse the vacuum energy in several non-supersymmetric examples that correspond to compactifications of tachyon free ten dimensional vacua as well as compactifications of tachyonic ten dimensional vacua. Our analysis uses the Free Fermionic Formalism of the heterotic-string in four dimensions and employs asymmetric boundary conditions that project all the geometrical moduli by Generalised GSO projections. This methodology produces models with both positive and negative spacetime potential at one-loop.
