Abstract:We consider the Steiner polynomial of a C^2 convex body K in R^n (n \leq 5). The opposites of the real parts of the roots of the Steiner polynomial are bounded below by the minimum value and above by the maximum value of the principal radii of curvature of the boundary of K.

Abstract:We derive interior curvature bounds for admissible solutions of a class of curvature equations subject to affine Dirichlet data, generalizing a well-known estimate of Pogorelov for equations of Monge-Ampere type. For equations for which convexity of the solution is the natural ellipticity assumption, the curvature bound is proved for solutions with C-1,C-1 Dirichlet data. We also use the curvature bounds to improve and extend various existence results for the Dirichlet and Plateau problems.

Abstract:The classical Steinitz theorem states that if the origin belongs to the interior of the convex hull of a set $S \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, then there are at most $2d$ points of $S$ whose convex hull contains the origin in the interior. Bárány, Katchalski, and Pach proved the following quantitative version of Steinitz's theorem. Let $Q$ be a convex polytope in $\mathbb{R}^d$ containing the standard Euclidean unit ball $\mathbf{B}^d$. Then there exist at most $2d$ vertices of $Q$ whose convex hull $Q^\prime$ satisfies \[ r \mathbf{B}^d \subset Q^\prime \] with $r\geq d^{-2d}$. They conjectured that $r\geq c d^{-1/2}$ holds with a universal constant $c>0$. We prove $r \geq \frac{1}{5d^2}$, the first polynomial lower bound on $r$. Furthermore, we show that $r$ is not be greater than $\frac{2}{\sqrt{d}}$.

Abstract:We control the number of critical points of a height function arising from the Nash isometric embedding of a compact Riemanniann-manifoldM. The Ln/2 curvature norm ∥R∥ and a similar scalar ∥R∥ are introduced and their integralR(M) andR(M) overM. We prove thatR(M) is bounded below by a constant depending only onn and the Betti numbers ofM. Thus a new sphere theorem is proved by eliminating allith Betti numbers fori = 1, .…n −1. The emphasis is that our sphere theorem imposes no restriction on the range of curvature.

Abstract:We obtain geometric lower bounds for the low Steklov eigenvalues of finite-volume hyperbolic surfaces with geodesic boundary. The bounds we obtain depend on the length of a shortest multi-geodesic disconnecting the surfaces into connected components each containing a boundary component and the rate of dependency on it is sharp. Our result also identifies situations when the bound is independent of the length of this multi-geodesic. The bounds also hold when the Gaussian curvature is bounded between two negative constants and can be viewed as a counterpart of the well-known Schoen-Wolpert-Yau inequality for Laplace eigenvalues. The proof is based on analysing the behaviour of the {corresponding Steklov} eigenfunction on an adapted version of thick-thin decomposition for hyperbolic surfaces with geodesic boundary. Our results extend and improve the previously known result in the compact case obtained by a different method.

Abstract:We investigate the question of sharp upper bounds for the Steklov eigenvalues of a hypersurface of revolution of the Euclidean space with two boundary components isometric to two copies of $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$. For the case of the first non zero Steklov eigenvalue, we give a sharp upper bound $B_n(L)$ (that depends only on the dimension $n \ge 3$ and the meridian length $L>0$) which is reached by a degenerated metric $g^*$, that we compute explicitly. We also give a sharp upper bound $B_n$ which depends only on $n$. Our method also permits us to prove some stability properties of these upper bounds.

Abstract:Let $\Delta$ and $B$ be the maximum vertex degree and a subset of vertices in a graph $G$ respectively. In this paper, we study the first (non-trivial) Steklov eigenvalue $\sigma_2$ of $G$ with boundary $B$. Using metrical deformation via flows, we first show that $\sigma_2 = \mathcal{O}\left(\frac{\Delta(g+1)^3}{|B|}\right)$ for graphs of orientable genus $g$ if $|B| \geq \max\{3 \sqrt{g},|V|^{\frac{1}{4} + \epsilon}, 9\}$ for some $\epsilon > 0$. This can be seen as a discrete analogue of Karpukhin's bound. Secondly, we prove that $\sigma_2 \leq \frac{8\Delta+4X}{|B|}$ based on planar crossing number $X$. Thirdly, we show that $\sigma_2 \leq \frac{|B|}{|B|-1} \cdot \delta_B$, where $\delta_B$ denotes the minimum degree for boundary vertices in $B$. At last, we compare several upper bounds on Laplacian eigenvalues and Steklov eigenvalues.

Abstract:Three polynomials are defined for given sets $S$ of $n$ points in general position in the plane: The Voronoi polynomial with coefficients the numbers of vertices of the order-$k$ Voronoi diagrams of $S$, the circle polynomial with coefficients the numbers of circles through three points of $S$ enclosing $k$ points of $S$, and the $E_{\leq k}$ polynomial with coefficients the numbers of (at most $k$)-edges of $S$. We present several formulas for the rectilinear crossing number of $S$ in terms of these polynomials and their roots. We also prove that the roots of the Voronoi polynomial lie on the unit circle if, and only if, $S$ is in convex position. Further, we present bounds on the location of the roots of these polynomials.

Explicit bounds for the solutions of superelliptic equations over number fields

Abstract:Let $f$ be a polynomial with coefficients in the ring $O_S$ of $S$-integers of a number field $K$, $b$ a non-zero $S$-integer, and $m$ an integer $\ge 2$. We consider the equation $( \star )$: $f(x) = b y^m$ in $x,y \in O_S$. Under the well-known LeVeque condition, we give fully explicit upper bounds in terms of $K, S, f, m$ and the $S$-norm of $b$ for the heights of the solutions $x$ of the equation $( \star)$. Further, we give an explicit bound $C$ in terms of $K, S, f$ and the $S$-norm of $b$ such that if $m > C$ the equation $(\star)$ has only solutions with $y = 0$ or a root of unity. Our results are more detailed versions of work of Trelina, Brindza, Shorey and Tijdeman, Voutier and Bugeaud, and extend earlier results of Bérczes, Evertse, and Győry to polynomials with multiple roots. In contrast with the previous results, our bounds depend on the $S$-norm of $b$ instead of its height.

Metric upper bounds for Steklov and Laplace eigenvalues

Abstract:We prove two upper bounds for the Steklov eigenvalues of a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. The first involves the volume of the manifold and of its boundary, as well as packing and volume growth constants of the boundary and its distortion. Its proof is based on a metric-measure space technique that was introduced by Colbois and Maerten. The second bound is in terms of the extrinsic diameter of the boundary and its injectivity radius. It is obtained from a concentration inequality, akin to Gromov-Milman concentration for closed manifolds. By applying these bounds to cylinders over closed manifold, we obtain bounds for eigenvalues of the Laplace operator, in the spirit of Grigor'yan-Netrusov-Yau and of Berger-Croke. For a family of manifolds that has uniformly bounded volume and boundary of fixed intrinsic geometry, we deduce that a large first nonzero Steklov eigenvalue implies that each boundary component is contained in a ball of small extrinsic radius.

Abstract:Finding point configurations, that yield the maximum polarization (Chebyshev constant) is gaining interest in the field of geometric optimization. In the present article, we study the problem of unconstrained maximum polarization on compact sets. In particular, we discuss necessary conditions for local optimality, such as that a locally optimal configuration is always contained in the convex hull of the respective darkest points. Building on this, we propose two sequences of mixed-integer linear programs in order to compute lower and upper bounds on the maximal polarization, where the lower bound is constructive. Moreover, we prove the convergence of these sequences towards the maximal polarization.

Abstract:We study the counting function of Steklov eigenvalues on compact manifolds with boundary and obtain its upper bound involving the leading term of Weyl's law. Our estimate can be viewed as a weakened version of Pólya's Conjecture in the Steklov case on general manifolds. As a byproduct, we also obtain a description about the decay behavior of Steklov eigenfunctions near the boundary.

Abstract:We consider the Steklov problem on differential $p$-forms defined by M. Karpukhin and present geometric eigenvalue bounds in the setting of warped product manifolds in various scenarios. In particular, we obtain Escobar type lower bounds for warped product manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature and strictly convex boundary, and certain sharp bounds for hypersurfaces of revolution, among others. We compare and contrast the behaviour with known results in the case of functions (i.e., $0$-forms), highlighting the influence of the underlying topology on the spectrum for $p$-forms in general.

Abstract:We study the Steklov problem on hypersurfaces of revolution with two boundary components in Euclidean space. In a recent article, the phenomenon of critical length, at which a Steklov eigenvalue is maximized, was exhibited and multiple questions were raised. In this article, we conjecture that, in any dimension, there is a finite number of infinite critical length. To investigate this, we develop an algorithm to efficiently perform numerical experiments, providing support to our conjecture. Furthermore, we prove the conjecture in dimension $n = 3$ and $n = 4$.
