Abstract:In this paper we find an upper bound for the first Steklov eigenvalue for a surface of revolution with boundary consisting of two spheres of different radii. Moreover, we prove that in some cases this boundary is sharp.

Abstract:We investigate the question of sharp upper bounds for the Steklov eigenvalues of a hypersurface of revolution of the Euclidean space with two boundary components isometric to two copies of $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$. For the case of the first non zero Steklov eigenvalue, we give a sharp upper bound $B_n(L)$ (that depends only on the dimension $n \ge 3$ and the meridian length $L>0$) which is reached by a degenerated metric $g^*$, that we compute explicitly. We also give a sharp upper bound $B_n$ which depends only on $n$. Our method also permits us to prove some stability properties of these upper bounds.

Geometric bounds for low Steklov eigenvalues of finite volume hyperbolic surfaces

Abstract:We obtain geometric lower bounds for the low Steklov eigenvalues of finite-volume hyperbolic surfaces with geodesic boundary. The bounds we obtain depend on the length of a shortest multi-geodesic disconnecting the surfaces into connected components each containing a boundary component and the rate of dependency on it is sharp. Our result also identifies situations when the bound is independent of the length of this multi-geodesic. The bounds also hold when the Gaussian curvature is bounded between two negative constants and can be viewed as a counterpart of the well-known Schoen-Wolpert-Yau inequality for Laplace eigenvalues. The proof is based on analysing the behaviour of the {corresponding Steklov} eigenfunction on an adapted version of thick-thin decomposition for hyperbolic surfaces with geodesic boundary. Our results extend and improve the previously known result in the compact case obtained by a different method.

Abstract:We study the Steklov problem on hypersurfaces of revolution with two boundary components in Euclidean space and focus on the phenomenon of critical length, at which a Steklov eigenvalue is maximized. In this article, we conjecture that, in any dimension, there is a finite number of infinite critical length. To investigate this, we develop an algorithm to efficiently perform numerical experiments, providing support to our conjecture. Furthermore, we prove the conjecture in dimension n = 3 and n = 4.

Abstract:In this note, we investigate the Steklov spectrum of the warped product $[0,L]\times_h \Sigma$ equipped with the metric $dt^2+h(t)^2g_\Sigma$, where $\Sigma$ is a compact surface. We find sharp upper bounds for the Steklov eigenvalues in terms of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on $\Sigma$. We apply our method to the case of metric of revolution on the 3-dimensional ball and we obtain a sharp estimate on the spectral gap between two consecutive Steklov eigenvalues.

Abstract:We prove two upper bounds for the Steklov eigenvalues of a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. The first involves the volume of the manifold and of its boundary, as well as packing and volume growth constants of the boundary and its distortion. Its proof is based on a metric-measure space technique that was introduced by Colbois and Maerten. The second bound is in terms of the extrinsic diameter of the boundary and its injectivity radius. It is obtained from a concentration inequality, akin to Gromov-Milman concentration for closed manifolds. By applying these bounds to cylinders over closed manifold, we obtain bounds for eigenvalues of the Laplace operator, in the spirit of Grigor'yan-Netrusov-Yau and of Berger-Croke. For a family of manifolds that has uniformly bounded volume and boundary of fixed intrinsic geometry, we deduce that a large first nonzero Steklov eigenvalue implies that each boundary component is contained in a ball of small extrinsic radius.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the upper bounds for discrete Steklov eigenvalues on trees via geometric quantities. For a finite tree, we prove sharp upper bounds for the first nonzero Steklov eigenvalue by the reciprocal of the size of the boundary and the diameter respectively. We also prove similar estimates for higher order Steklov eigenvalues.

Abstract:We study the counting function of Steklov eigenvalues on compact manifolds with boundary and obtain its upper bound involving the leading term of Weyl's law. Our estimate can be viewed as a weakened version of Pólya's Conjecture in the Steklov case on general manifolds. As a byproduct, we also obtain a description about the decay behavior of Steklov eigenfunctions near the boundary.

Abstract:We consider the Steklov eigenvalue problem on a compact pinched negatively curved manifold $M$ of dimension at least three with totally geodesic boundaries. We obtain a geometric lower bound for the first nonzero Steklov eigenvalue in terms of the total volume of $M$ and the volume of its boundary. We provide examples illustrating the necessity of these geometric quantities in the lower bound. Our result can be seen as a counterpart of the lower bound for the first nonzero Laplace eigenvalue on closed pinched negatively curved manifolds of dimension at least three proved by Schoen in 1982. The proof is composed of certain key elements. We provide a uniform lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the Steklov-Dirichlet problem on a neighborhood of the boundary of $M$ and show that it provides an obstruction to having a small first nonzero Steklov eigenvalue. As another key element of the proof, we give a tubular neighborhood theorem for totally geodesic hypersurfaces in a pinched negatively curved manifold. We give an explicit dependence for the width function in terms of the volume of the boundary and the pinching constant.

Abstract:We consider the Steklov problem on differential $p$-forms defined by M. Karpukhin and present geometric eigenvalue bounds in the setting of warped product manifolds in various scenarios. In particular, we obtain Escobar type lower bounds for warped product manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature and strictly convex boundary, and certain sharp bounds for hypersurfaces of revolution, among others. We compare and contrast the behaviour with known results in the case of functions (i.e., $0$-forms), highlighting the influence of the underlying topology on the spectrum for $p$-forms in general.

Abstract:Let $\Delta$ and $B$ be the maximum vertex degree and a subset of vertices in a graph $G$ respectively. In this paper, we study the first (non-trivial) Steklov eigenvalue $\sigma_2$ of $G$ with boundary $B$. Using metrical deformation via flows, we first show that $\sigma_2 = \mathcal{O}\left(\frac{\Delta(g+1)^3}{|B|}\right)$ for graphs of orientable genus $g$ if $|B| \geq \max\{3 \sqrt{g},|V|^{\frac{1}{4} + \epsilon}, 9\}$ for some $\epsilon > 0$. This can be seen as a discrete analogue of Karpukhin's bound. Secondly, we prove that $\sigma_2 \leq \frac{8\Delta+4X}{|B|}$ based on planar crossing number $X$. Thirdly, we show that $\sigma_2 \leq \frac{|B|}{|B|-1} \cdot \delta_B$, where $\delta_B$ denotes the minimum degree for boundary vertices in $B$. At last, we compare several upper bounds on Laplacian eigenvalues and Steklov eigenvalues.

Abstract:In this paper, we first construct a sequence of hyperbolic surfaces with connected geodesic boundary such that the first normalized Steklov eigenvalue tends to infinity. We then prove that the Weil–Petersson probability that a hyperbolic surface of genus g with n boundary components of lengths satisfies , where C is a positive universal constant, tends to 1 as , provided that tends to infinity at most logarithmically in g and each stays away from zero.

Abstract:We investigate upper bounds for the spectral ratios and gaps for the Steklov eigenvalues of balls with revolution-type metrics. We do not impose conditions on the Ricci curvature or on the convexity of the boundary. We obtain optimal upper bounds for the Steklov spectral ratios in dimensions 3 and higher. In dimension 3, we also obtain optimal upper bounds for the Steklov spectral gaps. By imposing additional constraints on the metric, we obtain upper bounds for the Steklov spectral gaps in dimensions 4 and higher.

Abstract:We prove a sharp upper bound and a lower bound for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Wentzell-Laplace operator on compact manifolds with boundary and an isoperimetric inequality for the same eigenvalue in the case where the manifold is a bounded domain in a Euclidean space. We study some fourth order Stekolv problems and obtain isoperimetric upper bound for the first eigenvalue of them. Abstract:We study the geometry of the first two eigenvalues of a magnetic Steklov problem on an annulus $\Sigma$ (a compact Riemannian surface with genus zero and two boundary components), the magnetic potential being the harmonic one-form having flux $\nu\in\mathbb R$ around any of the two boundary components. The resulting spectrum can be seen as a perturbation of the classical, non-magnetic Steklov spectrum, obtained when $\nu=0$ and studied e.g., by Fraser and Schoen. We obtain sharp upper bounds for the first and the second normalized eigenvalues and we discuss the geometry of the maximisers. Concerning the first eigenvalue, we isolate a noteworthy class of maximisers which we call $\alpha$-surfaces: they are free-boundary surfaces which are stationary for a weighted area functional (depending on the flux) and have proportional principal curvatures at each point; in particular, they belong to the class of linear Weingarten surfaces. We then study the second normalized eigenvalue for a fixed flux $\nu$ and prove the existence of a maximiser for rotationally invariant metrics. Moreover, the corresponding eigenfunctions define a free-boundary immersion in the unit ball of $\mathbb R^3$. Finally, we prove that the second normalized eigenvalue associated to a flux $\nu$ has an absolute maximum when $\nu=0$, the corresponding maximiser being the critical catenoid.

Constructing surfaces with first Steklov eigenvalue of arbitrarily large multiplicity

Abstract:We construct surfaces with arbitrarily large multiplicity for their first non-zero Steklov eigenvalue. The proof is based on a technique by M. Burger and B. Colbois originally used to prove a similar result for the Laplacian spectrum. We start by constructing surfaces $S_p$ with a specific subgroup of isometry $G_p:= \mathbb{Z}_p \rtimes \mathbb{Z}_p^*$ for each prime $p$. We do so by gluing surfaces with boundary following the structure of the Cayley graph of $G_p$. We then exploit the properties of $G_p$ and $S_p$ in order to show that an irreducible representation of high degree (depending on $p$) acts on the eigenspace of functions associated with $\sigma_1(S_p)$, leading to the desired result.
