Abstract:We introduce different notions of polynomial convexity with bounds on degrees of polynomials in $\mathbb C^n$. We provide some examples in higher dimensions and show necessary and sufficient conditions for polynomial convexity with degree bounds for certain sets of points in $\mathbb C$ and for certain arcs in the unit circle.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate error bounds for convex polynomials. We prove that for a convex polynomial f in n variables which is not everywhere positive and which is not constant on any affine subspace, either f is a sum of a convex polynomial in fewer variables and a linear form with negative coefficients or the negativity set of f is compact. As an application, we deduce various types of error bounds for unconstrained and polyhedral-constrained convex polynomials.

Abstract:Abstract Polynomial splines are ubiquitous in the fields of computer-aided geometric design and computational analysis. Splines on T-meshes, especially, have the potential to be incredibly versatile since local mesh adaptivity enables efficient modeling and approximation of local features. Meaningful use of such splines for modeling and approximation requires the construction of a suitable spanning set of linearly independent splines, and a theoretical understanding of the spline space dimension can be a useful tool when assessing possible approaches for building such splines. Here, we provide such a tool. Focusing on T-meshes, we study the dimension of the space of bivariate polynomial splines, and we discuss the general setting where local mesh adaptivity is combined with local polynomial degree adaptivity. The latter allows for the flexibility of choosing non-uniform bi-degrees for the splines, i.e., different bi-degrees on different faces of the T-mesh. In particular, approaching the problem using tools from homological algebra, we generalize the framework and the discourse presented by Mourrain (Math. Comput. 83 (286):847–871, 2014) for uniform bi-degree splines. We derive combinatorial lower and upper bounds on the spline space dimension and subsequently outline sufficient conditions for the bounds to coincide.

Abstract:Given a subspace $U\subset\mathbb{C}[x_1,\dots,x_n]_d$ we consider the closure of the image of the rational map $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}\dashrightarrow\mathbb{P}^{\dim U-1}$ given by $U$. Its coordinate ring is isomorphic to $\bigoplus_{i\ge 0} U^i$ where $U^i$ is the degree $i$ component. We consider the Hilbert function of this algebra in the case where $U$ contains a regular sequence, equivalently the map is a morphism, and find lower bounds for the dimension of the degree 2 component. We apply our bounds to study the boundary structure of certain convex sets, called Gram spectrahedra, which are linked to sum of squares representations of non-negative polynomials.

Abstract:In this paper, we first prove that the totally real discs lying in certain Levi flat hypersurfaces are polynomially convex. As applications we prove that the totally real discs lying in the boundary of certain polynomial polyhedra are polynomially convex. We also provide an if and only if condition for polynomial convexity of totally real discs lying in the boundary of Hartog's triangle. We also provide sufficient conditions on general compact subsets lying on those hypersurfaces for polynomial convexity.

Abstract:The Cauchy’s formula of entire functions f:Ck→C is used to establish Markov-Bernstein type inequalities of multivariate polynomials with positive coeffeicients on the k-dimensional simplex Tk⊂Rk and on the cube [0,1]k. The main results generalize and improve those of G.G. Lorentz, etc. Some applications of these inequalities are also considered in polynomial constrained approximation.
Unbounded convex polyhedra as polynomial images of Euclidean spaces

Abstract:In a previous work we proved that each $n$-dimensional convex polyhedron ${\mathcal K}subset{\mathbb R}^n$ and its relative interior are regular images of ${\mathbb R}^n$. As the image of a non-constant polynomial map is an unbounded semialgebraic set, it is not possible to substitute regular maps by polynomial maps in the previous statement. In this work we determine constructively all unbounded $n$-dimensional convex polyhedra ${\mathcal K}\subset{\mathbb R}^n$ that are polynomial images of ${\mathbb R}^n$. We also analyze for which of them the interior ${\rm Int}({\mathcal K})$ is a polynomial image of ${\mathbb R}^n$. A discriminating object is the recession cone $\vec{\mathcal C}({\mathcal K})$ of ${\mathcal K}$. Namely, \em ${\mathcal K}$ is a polynomial image of ${\mathbb R}^n$ if and only if $\vec{\mathcal C}({\mathcal K})$ has dimension $n$\em. In addition, \em ${\rm Int}({\mathcal K})$ is a polynomial image of ${\mathbb R}^n$ if and only if $\vec{\mathcal C}({\mathcal K})$ has dimension $n$ and ${\mathcal K}$ has no bounded faces of dimension $n-1$\em. A key result is an improvement of Pecker's elimination of inequalities to represent semialgebraic sets as projections of algebraic sets. Empirical approaches suggest us that there are `few' polynomial maps that have a concrete convex polyhedron as a polynomial image and that there are even fewer for which it is affordable to show that their images actually correspond to our given convex polyhedron. This search of a `needle in the haystack' justifies somehow the technicalities involved in our constructive proofs.

Polynomial valuations on convex functions and their maximal extensions

Abstract:Extension problems for polynomial valuations on different cones of convex functions are investigated. It is shown that for the classes of functions under consideration, the extension problem reduces to a simple geometric obstruction on the support of these valuations. The results rely on a homogeneous decomposition for the space of polynomial valuations of bounded degree and the support properties of certain distributions associated to the homogeneous components. As an application, an explicit integral representation for valuations of top degree is established.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a new class of convex functions, so-called generalized n-polynomial p-convex functions. We investigate their algebraic properties and provide some relationships between these functions and other types of convex functions. We establish Hermite–Hadamard (H–H) inequality for the newly defined class of functions. Additionally, we derive refinements of H–H inequality for functions whose first derivatives in absolute value at certain power are generalized n-polynomial p-convex. When p=−1, our definition evolves into a new definition for the class of convex functions so-called generalized n-polynomial harmonically convex functions. The results obtained in this study generalize regarding those found in the existing literature. By extending these particular types of inequalities, the objective is to unveil fresh mathematical perspectives, attributes and connections that can enhance the evolution of more resilient mathematical methodologies. This study aids in the progression of mathematical instruments across diverse scientific fields.

The algebraic degree of sparse polynomial optimization

Abstract:We study a broad class of polynomial optimization problems whose constraints and objective functions exhibit sparsity patterns. We give two characterizations of the number of critical points to these problems, one as a mixed volume and one as an intersection product on a toric variety. As a corollary, we obtain a convex geometric interpretation of polar degrees, a classical invariant of algebraic varieties, as well as Euclidean distance degrees. Furthermore, we prove the BKK generality of Lagrange systems in many instances.

Abstract:Three polynomials are defined for given sets $S$ of $n$ points in general position in the plane: The Voronoi polynomial with coefficients the numbers of vertices of the order-$k$ Voronoi diagrams of $S$, the circle polynomial with coefficients the numbers of circles through three points of $S$ enclosing $k$ points of $S$, and the $E_{\leq k}$ polynomial with coefficients the numbers of (at most $k$)-edges of $S$. We present several formulas for the rectilinear crossing number of $S$ in terms of these polynomials and their roots. We also prove that the roots of the Voronoi polynomial lie on the unit circle if, and only if, $S$ is in convex position. Further, we present bounds on the location of the roots of these polynomials.

Low Degree Local Correction Over the Boolean Cube

Abstract:In this work, we show that the class of multivariate degree-$d$ polynomials mapping $\{0,1\}^{n}$ to any Abelian group $G$ is locally correctable with $\widetilde{O}_{d}((\log n)^{d})$ queries for up to a fraction of errors approaching half the minimum distance of the underlying code. In particular, this result holds even for polynomials over the reals or the rationals, special cases that were previously not known. Further, we show that they are locally list correctable up to a fraction of errors approaching the minimum distance of the code. These results build on and extend the prior work of the authors [ABPSS24] (STOC 2024) who considered the case of linear polynomials and gave analogous results. Low-degree polynomials over the Boolean cube $\{0,1\}^{n}$ arise naturally in Boolean circuit complexity and learning theory, and our work furthers the study of their coding-theoretic properties. Extending the results of [ABPSS24] from linear to higher-degree polynomials involves several new challenges and handling them gives us further insights into properties of low-degree polynomials over the Boolean cube. For local correction, we construct a set of points in the Boolean cube that lie between two exponentially close parallel hyperplanes and is moreover an interpolating set for degree-$d$ polynomials. To show that the class of degree-$d$ polynomials is list decodable up to the minimum distance, we stitch together results on anti-concentration of low-degree polynomials, the Sunflower lemma, and the Footprint bound for counting common zeroes of polynomials. Analyzing the local list corrector of [ABPSS24] for higher degree polynomials involves understanding random restrictions of non-zero degree-$d$ polynomials on a Hamming slice. In particular, we show that a simple random restriction process for reducing the dimension of the Boolean cube is a suitably good sampler for Hamming slices.

Abstract:Recent advances in mathematical inequalities suggest that bounds of polynomial-exponential-type are appropriate for evaluating key trigonometric functions. In this paper, we innovate in this sense by establishing new and sharp bounds of the form (1−αx2)eβx2 for the trigonometric sinc and cosine functions. Our main result for the sinc function is a double inequality holding on the interval (0, π), while our main result for the cosine function is a double inequality holding on the interval (0, π/2). Comparable sharp results for hyperbolic functions are also obtained. The proofs are based on series expansions, inequalities on the Bernoulli numbers, and the monotone form of the l’Hospital rule. Some comparable bounds of the literature are improved. Examples of application via integral techniques are given.

Abstract:We consider polynomials expressing the cohomology classes of subvarieties of products of projective spaces, and limits of positive real multiples of such polynomials. We study the relation between these covolume polynomials and Lorentzian polynomials. While these are distinct notions, we prove that, like Lorentzian polynomials, covolume polynomials have M-convex support and generalize the notion of log-concave sequences. In fact, we prove that covolume polynomials are `sectional log-concave', that is, the coefficients of suitable restrictions of these polynomials form log-concave sequences. We observe that Chern classes of globally generated bundles give rise to covolume polynomials, and use this fact to prove that certain polynomials associated with Segre classes of subschemes of products of projective spaces are covolume polynomials. We conjecture that the same polynomials may be Lorentzian after a standard normalization operation. Finally, we obtain a combinatorial application of a particular case of our Segre class result. We prove that the adjoint polynomial of a convex polyhedral cone contained in the nonnegative orthant, and sharing a face with it, is a covolume polynomial. This implies that these adjoint polynomials are M-convex and sectional log-concave, and in fact dually Lorentzian, that is, Lorentzian after a certain change of variables.

Abstract:We explore the applications of Lorentzian polynomials to the fields of algebraic geometry, analytic geometry and convex geometry. In particular, we establish a series of intersection theoretic inequalities, which we call rKT property, with respect to $m$-positive classes and Schur classes. We also study its convexity variants -- the geometric inequalities for $m$-convex functions on the sphere and convex bodies. Along the exploration, we prove that any finite subset on the closure of the cone generated by $m$-positive classes can be endowed with a polymatroid structure by a canonical numerical-dimension type function, extending our previous result for nef classes; and we prove Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities for valuations of Schur type. We also establish various analogs of sumset estimates (Plünnecke-Ruzsa inequalities) from additive combinatorics in our contexts.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the degree of $h$-polynomials of edge ideals of finite simple graphs. In particular, we provide combinatorial formulas for the degree of the $h$-polynomial for various fundamental classes of graphs such as paths, cycles, and bipartite graphs. To the best of our knowledge, this marks the first investigation into the combinatorial interpretation of this algebraic invariant. Additionally, we characterize all connected graphs in which the sum of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the degree of the $h$-polynomial of an edge ideal reaches its maximum value, which is the number of vertices in the graph.

Bounds on the infimum of polynomials over a generic semi-algebraic set using asymptotic critical values

Abstract:We present precise bit and degree estimates for the optimal value of the polynomial optimization problem $f^*:=\text{inf}_{x\in \mathscr{X}}~f(x)$, where $\mathscr{X}$ is a semi-algebraic set satisfying some non-degeneracy conditions. Our bounds depend on the degree, the bitsize of $f$, and the polynomials defining $\mathscr{X}$, and are single exponential with respect to the number of variables. They generalize the single exponential bounds from Jeronimo, Perrucci, and Tsigaridas (SIAM Journal on Optimization, 23(1):241--255, 2013) for the minimum of a polynomial function on a compact connected component of a basic closed semi-algebraic set. The tools that we use allow us to obtain specialized bounds and dedicated algorithms for two large families of polynomial optimization problems in which the optimum value might not be attained. The first family forms a dense set of real polynomial functions with a fixed collection of Newton polytopes; we provide the best approximation yet for the bifurcation set, which contains the optimal value, and we deduce an effective method for computations. As for the second family, we consider any unconstrained polynomial optimization problem; we present more precise bounds, together with a better bit complexity estimate of an algorithm to compute the optimal value.

Abstract:Let T be the unit circle in the complex plane C. This paper proves the existence of analytic structure in a compact subset K of T X C^n, where K has so-called "lineally convex" or "hypoconvex" fibers over T. It also addresses a related H-infinity optimization problem.
