Abstract:Kerckhoff and Storm conjectured that compact hyperbolic n-orbifolds with totally geodesic boundary are infinitesimally rigid when n>3. This paper verifies this conjecture for a specific example based on the 4-dimensional hyperbolic 120-cell.

Abstract:Elliptic genus was derived as the partition function in quantum field theory [26]. Mathematically it is the beautiful combination of topology of manifolds, index theory and modular forms (cf. [15], [10]). Elliptic genus for smooth manifolds has been well-studied. Recently, Borisov and Libgober ([3], [4]) proposed some definitions of elliptic genus for certain singular spaces, especially for complex orbifolds which is a global quotient M/G, here the finite group G acts holomorphically on complex variety M . Similar definitions have been introduced by string theorists in the 80s, in the study of orbifold string theory. One of their guiding principles is the modular invariance. More recently orbifold string theory has attracted the attention of geometers and topologists. For example Chen and Ruan (cf. [7], [22]) have defined orbifold cohomology and orbifold quantum cohomology groups. One of most important properties for elliptic genus is its rigidity property under compact Lie group action. For smooth manifolds, the rigidity and its generalizations have been well studied. Since orbifold elliptic genus is the partition function of orbifold string theory, it is natural to expect the rigidity property for orbifold elliptic genus. Although the global quotients from a very important class of orbifolds, many interesting orbifolds are not global quotients. For example, most of the Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces of weighted projective spaces are not global quotients. In this paper we define elliptic genus for general orbifolds which generalizes the definition of Borisov and Libgober, and prove their rigidity property. We actually introduce the more general elliptic genus involving twisted bundles and proved its rigidity. The idea of considering the weights in the definition of orbifold elliptic genus comes from [4] and our proof of the K-theory version of Witten rigidity theorems [21, §4]. The proof of the rigidity is again a combination of modular invariance and the index theory. Only more complicated combinatorics are involved in the definition and the proof. This paper is organized as follows: In Sections 1 and 2 we review the equivariant index theorem on orbifolds. We define orbifold elliptic genus and prove its rigidity for almost complex orbifolds in Section 3. Finally in Section 4 we introduce orbifold elliptic genus for spin orbifolds, and will study its rigidity property on a later occasion. Abstract:Let (N, g) be an n-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold with nonempty boundary partial derivative N. Assume that the Ricci curvature of (N, g) has a negative lower bound Ric >= -(n-1)c(2) for some c> 0, and the mean curvature of the boundary partial derivative N satisfies H = -(n-1) c(0) > (n-1)c for some c(0) > c > 0. Then a known result (cf. [12]) says that sup(x is an element of N) d(x, partial derivative N) <= 1/c coth(-1) c(0)/c. In this paper, we prove the rigidity result that if N is compact, then the equality holds if and only if (N, g) is isometric to the geodesic ball of radius 1/c coth(-1) c(0)/c in an n-dimensional hyperbolic space H-n(-c(2)) of constant sectional curvature -c(2). Moreover, we prove an analogous result for manifold with m-Bakry- Emery Ricci curvature bounded below by a negative constant.

Abstract:We prove that in the moduli space Md of degree d2 rational maps, any hyperbolic component in the disconnectedness locus and of Cantor circle type is a finite quotient of R4d-4-nxTn, where n is determined by dynamics. The proof uses some ideas from Riemann surface theory (Abel's Theorem), dynamical system and algebraic topology.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to rigidity of smooth bundles which are equipped with fiberwise geometric or dynamical structure. We show that the fiberwise associated sphere bundle to a bundle whose leaves are equipped with (continuously varying) metrics of negative curvature is a topologically trivial bundle when either the base space is simply connected or, more generally, when the bundle is fiber homotopically trivial. We present two very different proofs of this result: a geometric proof and a dynamical proof. We also establish a number of rigidity results for bundles which are equipped with fiberwise Anosov dynamical systems. Finally, we present several examples which show that our results are sharp in certain ways or illustrate necessity of various assumptions.

Abstract:By gluing some copies of a polytope of Kerckhoff and Storm's, we build the smallest known orientable hyperbolic 4-manifold that is not commensurable with the ideal 24-cell or the ideal rectified simplex. It is cusped and arithemtic, and has twice the minimal volume.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the compactness of a boundary value problem for hyperkaehler 4-manifolds. We show that under certain topological conditions and the positive mean curvature condition on the boundary, a sequence of hyperkaehler triples converges smoothly up to diffeomorphisms if and only if their restrictions to the boundary converge smoothly up to diffeomorphisms. We also generalize this result to torsion-free hypersymplectic triples.

Rigidity Results for Compact Submanifolds with Pinched Ricci Curvature in Euclidean and Spherical Space Forms

Abstract:For compact submanifolds in Euclidean and Spherical space forms with Ricci curvature bounded below by a function $\alpha(n,k,H,c)$ of mean curvature, we prove that the submanifold is either isometric to the Einstein Clifford torus, or a topological sphere for the maximal bound $\alpha(n,[\frac{n}{2}],H,c)$, or has up to $k$-th homology groups vanishing. This gives an almost complete (except for the differentiable sphere theorem) characterization of compact submanifolds with pinched Ricci curvature, generalizing celebrated rigidity results obtained by Ejiri, Xu-Tian, Xu-Gu, Xu-Leng-Gu, Vlachos, Dajczer-Vlachos.

A non-trivial family of trivial bundles with complex hyperbolic structure

Abstract:In $\mathrm{PU}(2,1)$, the group of holomorphic isometries of the complex hyperbolic plane, we study the space of involutions $R_1, R_2, R_3, R_4, R_5$ satisfying $R_5R_4R_3R_2R_1=1$, where $R_1$ is a reflection in a complex geodesic and the other $R_i$'s are reflections in points of the complex hyperbolic plane. We show that this space modulo $\mathrm{PU}(2,1)$-conjugation is bending-connected and has dimension $4$. Using this, we construct a $4$-dimensional bending-connected family of complex hyperbolic structures on a disc orbibundle with vanishing Euler number over the sphere with $5$ cone points of angle $\pi$. Bending-connectedness here means that we can naturally deform the geometric structure, like Dehn twists in Teichmüller theory. Additionally, finding complex hyperbolic disc orbibundles with vanishing Euler number is a hard problem, originally conjectured by W. Goldman and Y. Eliashberg and solved by S. Anan'in and N. Gusevskii, and we produce a simpler and more straightforward construction for them.

Abstract:We show that the combination of non-negative sectional curvature (or $2$-intermediate Ricci curvature) and strict positivity of scalar curvature forces rigidity of complete (non-compact) two-sided stable minimal hypersurfaces in a $4$-manifold with bounded curvature. In particular, this implies the nonexistence of complete two-sided stable minimal hypersurface in a closed $4$-manifold with positive sectional curvature. Our work leads to new comparison results. We also construct various examples showing rigidity of stable minimal hypersurfaces can fail under other curvature conditions.

Abstract:We prove hyperbolic 3-manifolds are geometrically inflexible: a unit quasiconformal deformation of a Kleinian group extends to an equivariant bi-Lipschitz diffeomorphism between quotients whose pointwise bi-Lipschitz constant decays exponentially in the distance form the boundary of the convex core for points in the thick part. Estimates at points in the thin part are controlled by similar estimates on the complex lengths of short curves. We use this inflexibility to give a new proof of the convergence of pseudo-Anosov double-iteration on the quasi-Fuchsian space of a closed surface, and the resulting hyperbolization theorem for closed 3-manifolds that fiber over the circle with pseudo-Anosov monodromy.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to prove two results concerning the rigidity of complete, immersed, orientable, stable minimal hypersurfaces: we show that they are hyperplane in R 4 , while they do not exist in positively curved closed Riemannian ( n +1)-manifold when n ≤5; in particular, there are no stable minimal hypersurfaces in S n +1 when n ≤5. The first result was recently proved also by Chodosh and Li, and the second is a consequence of a more general result concerning minimal surfaces with finite index. Both theorems rely on a conformal method, inspired by a classical work of Fischer-Colbrie.

Abstract:It is well known that an arbitrary closed orientable $3$-manifold can be realized as the unique boundary of a compact orientable $4$-manifold, that is, any closed orientable $3$-manifold is cobordant to zero. In this paper, we consider the geometric cobordism problem: a hyperbolic $3$-manifold is geometrically bounding if it is the only boundary of some totally geodesic hyperbolic 4-manifold. However, there are very rare geometrically bounding closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Let $v approx 4.3062ldots$ be the volume of the regular right-angled hyperbolic dodecahedron $mathbb{H}^{3}$, for each $n in mathbb{Z}_{+}$, we show there are at least $lceilfrac{5n+3}{2}rceil$ closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds of the same volume $16nv$, each of them bounds a totally geodesic hyperbolic 4-manifold. The proof uses small cover theory over a sequence of linearly-glued dodecahedra.

Abstract:We investigate rigidity problems for odd-dimensional compact submanifolds. We show that if M n (n ⩾ 5) is an odd-dimensional compact submanifold with parallel mean curvature in S n+p , and if Ric M > (n−2−$\tfrac{1} {n}$)(1+H 2) and H < δ n , where δ n is an explicit positive constant depending only on n, then M is a totally umbilical sphere. Here H is the mean curvature of M. Moreover, we prove that if M n (n ⩾ 5) is an odd-dimensional compact submanifold in the space form F n+p (c) with c ⩾ 0, and if Ric M > (n−2−ɛ n )(c+H 2), where ɛ n is an explicit positive constant depending only on n, then M is homeomorphic to a sphere.

Abstract:The paper is centered around a new proof of the infinitesimal rigidity of smooth closed surfaces with everywhere positive Gauss curvature. We use a reformulation that replaces deformation of an embedding by deformation of the metric inside the body bounded by the surface. The proof is obtained by studying derivatives of the Hilbert-Einstein functional with boundary term. This approach is in a sense dual to proving the Gauss infinitesimal rigidity, that is rigidity with respect to the Gauss curvature parametrized by the Gauss map, by studying derivatives of the volume bounded by the surface. We recall that Blaschke's classical proof of the infinitesimal rigidity is also related to the Gauss infinitesimal rigidity, but in a different way: while Blaschke uses Gauss rigidity of the same surface, we use the Gauss rigidity of the polar dual. In the spherical and in the hyperbolic-de Sitter space, there is a perfect duality between the Hilbert-Einstein functional and the volume, as well as between both kinds of rigidity. We also indicate directions for future research, including the infinitesimal rigidity of convex cores of hyperbolic 3--manifolds.

Abstract:Since there is no hyperbolic Dehn filling theorem for higher dimensions, it is challenging to construct explicit hyperbolic manifolds of small volume in dimension at least four. Here, we build up closed hyperbolic 4-manifolds of volume 34 π 2 3 ⋅ 16 \frac {34\pi ^2}{3}\cdot 16 by using the small cover theory. In particular, we classify all of the orientable four-dimensional small covers over the right-angled 120-cell up to homeomorphism; these are all with even intersection forms.

Abstract:We prove that for a compact 3-manifold M with boundary admitting an ideal triangulation T with valence at least 10 at all edges, there exists a unique complete hyperbolic metric with totally geodesic boundary, so that T is isotopic to a geometric decomposition of M. Our approach is to use a variant of the combinatorial Ricci flow introduced by Luo (Electron. Res. Announc. Amer. Math. Soc. 11 (2005) 12-20) for pseudo-3-manifolds. In this case, we prove that the extended Ricci flow converges to the hyperbolic metric exponentially fast.
