Abstract:We consider future experiments to detect CP violation in neutrino oscillations and discuss how to test that all asymmetries are indeed described in terms of the single leptonic Jarlskog invariant as predicted in the absence of new physics effects.

Abstract:We review the basic mechanisms of neutrino mass generation and the corresponding structure of the lepton mixing matrix. We summarize the status of three-neutrino oscillation parameters as determined from current observations, using state-of-the-art solar and atmospheric neutrino fluxes, as well as latest experimental data as of September 2007. We also comment on recent attempts to account for these results and to understand flavour from first principles. We discuss extensively the prospects for probing the strength of CP violation in two near term accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments, T2K and NOvA, as well as possible extensions such as T2KK and a second large off-axis detector near the NOvA detector. We also briefly discuss the possibility of probing the effect of Majorana phases in future neutrinoless double beta decay searches and discuss other implications of leptonic CP violation such as leptogenesis. Finally we comment on the issue of robustness of the current oscillation interpretation and possible ways of probing for non-standard neutrino interactions in precision oscillation studies.

Abstract:An important goal of current and future long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments pertains to determination of the Dirac-type leptonic $CP$ phase, $\delta_{13}$. We consider the new physics scenario of an eV scale sterile neutrino along with three active neutrinos and demonstrate the impact on the $CP$ and $T$ violation measurements in neutrino oscillations. We address the question of disentangling the intrinsic effects from extrinsic effects in the standard three neutrino paradigm as well as the scenario with added light sterile neutrino. We define a metric to isolate the two kinds of effects and our approach is general in the sense that it is independent of the choice of $\delta_{13}$. We study the role of different appearance and disappearance channels which can contribute to CP and T violation measurements. We perform the analysis for different long baseline experiments which have different detection capabilities such as Water Cherenkov (WC) and Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC).

Abstract:With the help of a block parametrization of the canonical seesaw flavor textures in terms of the Euler-like rotation angles and CP-violaing phases, we derive a general and explicit expression for the Jarlskog invariant of CP violation in neutrino oscillations and compare it with the CP-violating asymmetries of heavy Majorana neutrino decays within the minimal seesaw framework which contains two right-handed neutrino fields. Two simplified scenarios are discussed to illustrate how direct or indirect the correlation between these two types of CP violation can be.

Abstract:Small neutrino masses confirmed in the neutrino oscillation experiments indicate the need for new physics beyond the standard model. Seesaw mechanism is an interesting way to extend the standard model for explaining the neutrino masses. In a low-scale type-I seesaw mechanism, the tiny masses of neutrinos can be explained by heavy Majorana neutrino masses. Heavy Majorana neutrinos can lead to lepton-number-violating processes and the induced CP violation can contribute to the baryon asymmetry in the Universe. Heavy Majorana neutrinos can also lead to lepton-number-conserving processes and in this paper, we study the CP violation in lepton-number-conserving processes through heavy Majorana neutrinos at future lepton colliders. New possible observations of CP violation can also be connected to evidences of new physics beyond the standard model.

Abstract:The probabilities of $\nu^{}_{\mu} \to \nu^{}_{e}$ and $\overline{\nu}^{}_{\mu} \to \overline{\nu}^{}_{e}$ oscillations in vacuum are determined by the CP-conserving flavor mixing factors ${\cal R}^{}_{ij} \equiv {\rm Re} (U^{}_{\mu i} U^{}_{e j} U^{*}_{\mu j} U^{*}_{e i})$ and the universal Jarlskog invariant of CP violation ${\cal J}^{}_{\nu} \equiv (-1)^{i+j} \; {\rm Im} (U^{}_{\mu i} U^{}_{e j} U^{*}_{\mu j} U^{*}_{e i})$ (for $i, j = 1, 2, 3$ and $i < j$), where $U$ is the $3\times 3$ Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata neutrino mixing matrix. We show that ${\cal J}^{2}_{\nu} = {\cal R}^{}_{12} {\cal R}^{}_{13} + {\cal R}^{}_{12} {\cal R}^{}_{23} + {\cal R}^{}_{13} {\cal R}^{}_{23}$ holds as a natural consequence of the unitarity of $U$. This Pythagoras-like relation may provide a novel cross-check of the result of ${\cal J}^{}_{\nu}$ that will be directly measured in the next-generation long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. Indirect non-unitarity effects and terrestrial matter effects on ${\cal J}^{}_{\nu}$ and ${\cal R}^{}_{ij}$ are also discussed.

CP Violation in $B \to K\ell^+\ell^-$ Decays: New Opportunities in the High-Precision Era

Abstract:Experimental data on rare $B$-meson decays indicate deviations from Standard Model predictions. In studies of these decays, possible new sources of CP violation are often neglected. We discuss CP violation in the rare $B$-meson decays $B\to K\ell^+\ell^- (\ell = \mu,e)$ and point to two phenomena that arise when new sources of CP violation are included. First, the Wilson coefficients $C_{9\ell}$ and $C_{10\ell}$ become complex, and we show how we can extract their values from measurements of direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetries. Second, new sources of CP violation can generate nontrivial lepton flavour universality violation. Such a violation is usually measured through ratios like $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$, but we show that measuring only these ratios leaves a large parameter space unexplored. These results bring exciting opportunities to reveal New Physics effects in the high-precision era.

Abstract:Since its discovery in the 1960s, the violation of CP symmetry has intrigued scientists and stimulated the advancement of knowledge in particle physics. Numerous experiments were designed and built to study it in increasingly deeper detail. Nowadays, the phenomenon is well framed within the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Nevertheless, new results are being produced by modern experiments at colliders that challenge the current understanding of the model. In this article, the current status of CP violation studies and the role of CP violation in the search for effects beyond the Standard Model are described together with the prospects for ongoing and future experiments.

Abstract:We perform realistic simulations of the current and future long baseline experiments such as T2K, NOνA, DUNE and T2HK in order to determine their ultimate potential in probing neutrino oscillation parameters. We quantify the potential of these experiments to underpin the octant of the atmospheric angle θ23 as well as the value and sign of the CP phase δCP. We do this both in general, as well as within the predictive framework of a previously proposed [1] benchmark theory of neutrino oscillations which tightly correlates θ23 and δCP.

In this paper, we investigate the prospects for measuring CP violation in top quark pair production and rare decay via Majorana neutrinos at the LHC. The CP asymmetry stems from the significant interference of contributions from two different Majorana neutrinos and can be appreciable when the two neutrino masses are nearly degenerate. Probing Dual NSI and CP Violation in DUNE and T2HK

Abstract:The latest results from the long baseline neutrino experiments show a hint of non-zero CP violation in the neutrino sector. In this article, we study the CP violation effects in the upcoming long-baseline neutrino experiments DUNE and T2HK. Non-standard interactions can affect the cleaner determination of CP violation parameter. It has been argued that the NSI can help alleviate the tension between the recent $\delta_{CP}$ measurements of NO$\nu$A and T2K experiments. We consider here the dual NSI due to $\epsilon_{e\mu}$ and $\epsilon_{e\tau}$, arising simultaneously to see the effects in neutrino oscillation probabilities. Moreover, the CP asymmetry parameter $A_{CP}$ exhibits a clear distinction between normal and inverted mass orderings in the DUNE experiment.

Abstract:The best way to probe CP violation in the lepton sector is with long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiments in the appearance mode: the appearance of $\nu_e$ in predominantly $\nu_\mu$ beams. Here we show that it is possible to discover CP violation with disappearance experiments only, by combining JUNO for electron neutrinos and DUNE or Hyper-Kamiokande for muon neutrinos. While the maximum sensitivity to discover CP is quite modest ($1.6\sigma$ with 6 years of JUNO and 13 years of DUNE), some values of $\delta$ may be disfavored by $>3\sigma$ depending on the true value of $\delta$.

Abstract:Tri-direct CP symmetry is an economical neutrino model building paradigm, and it allows to describe neutrino masses, mixing angles and CP violation phases in terms of four free parameters. Viability of a class of tri-direct CP models is examined with a comprehensive simulation of current and future neutrino oscillation experiments. Two benchmark models as well as the full parameter space are carefully scanned, and the parameter degeneracy problem is observed from the constraint of one group of neutrino oscillation experiments. Complementary roles from the accelerator neutrino experiments (e.g., T2HK and DUNE) and reactor neutrino experiments (e.g., JUNO) are crucial to break the degeneracy and nail down fundamental neutrino mixing parameters of the underlying theory.

Abstract:If neutrinos get mass via the seesaw mechanism the mixing matrix describing neutrino oscillations can be effectively non-unitary. We show that in this case the neutrino appearance probabilities involve a new CP phase, phi, associated to non-unitarity. This leads to an ambiguity in extracting the "standard" three--neutrino phase delta_CP, which can survive even after neutrino and antineutrino channels are combined. Its existence should be taken into account in the planning of any oscillation experiment aiming at a robust measurement of delta_CP.

Oscillations of Majorana neutrinos in supernova and CP violation

Abstract:Leptonic CP violation is one of the most important topics in neutrino physics. CP violation in the neutrino sector is strongly related to the nature of neutrinos: whether they are Dirac or Majorana particles. In \cite{Popov:2021icg} we have shown that for Majorana neutrinos appearance of nonzero Majorana CP-violating phases combined with strong magnetic field during supernova core-collapse can induce new resonances in neutrino oscillations, for example in $\nu_e \to \bar{\nu}_\tau$ channel. In this paper we further study new resonances in Majorana neutrino oscillations, in particular energy dependence of amplitudes of resonant oscillations. Our findings suggest a potential astrophysical setup for studying the nature of neutrino masses and leptonic CP violation and may be important for future neutrino experiments, such as JUNO, Hyper-Kamiokande and DUNE.

Abstract:The seesaw extension of the SM explains the tiny neutrino masses and it is accompanied by many CP violating phases. We study the case where all leptonic CP violation arises from the soft breaking in the heavy Majorana mass matrix. Parameter counting reveals that one less parameter is needed to describe this case. This reduction leads to restrictions on the parameter space of heavy neutrinos. We analyze the minimal seesaw case in detail and find that mass degeneracy of heavy neutrinos is not possible for certain values of the CP phases.

Abstract:The minimum seesaw model with two right-handed neutrinos is considered, where the lightest neutrino is naturally massless. Instead of adopting texture zeros in the lepton Yukawa matrices, which cause both theoretical and experimental troubles, here we propose two-$\boldsymbol\epsilon$ textures, where $\boldsymbol\epsilon$ is a small number. Combined with neutrino oscillation experimental data, we find that a large CP angle is preferred for the normal neutrino mass order. In contrast, the CP angle almost vanishes for the inverted order. This can be well-tested in near-future experiments, such as Hyper-Kamiokande. Besides, the predicted effective Majorana neutrino mass $m_{ee}$ and the total neutrino mass $\sum m^\nu_i$ are also within reach of ongoing or future experiments.

Abstract:The observation of neutrino masses leads to the possibility of leptonic mixing and CP violation. One of the simplest extensions of the Standard Model giving rise to neutrino masses consists of the introduction of one righthanded neutrino field per generation, singlet of SU(2). In the context of the seesaw mechanism this leads to three light and three heavy neutrinos. The charged current interactions couple the charged leptons to both the light and the heavy physical neutrinos and leptonic CP violation may occur at low energies as well as at high energies giving rise to the possibility of leptogenesis. There are special scenarios where it is possible to establish a connection between CP violation at the two different scales, an interesting example is included in this work. Furthermore, we describe how the conjecture that all phenomena of CP violation present in nature could have a common origin can be realized in the framework of a further minimal extension of the Standard Model with CP broken through the phase of the vacuum expectation value of a complex Higgs singlet.
