Abstract:We study maximal orthogonal families of Borel probability measures on $2^\omega$ (abbreviated m.o. families) and show that there are generic extensions of the constructible universe $L$ in which each of the following holds: (1) There is a $\Delta^1_3$-definable well order of the reals, there is a $\Pi^1_2$-definable m.o. family, there are no $\mathbf{\Sigma}^1_2$-definable m.o. families and $\mathfrak{b}=\mathfrak{c}=\omega_3$ (in fact any reasonable value of $\mathfrak{c}$ will do). (2) There is a $\Delta^1_3$-definable well order of the reals, there is a $\Pi^1_2$-definable m.o. family, there are no $\mathbf{\Sigma}^1_2$-definable m.o. families, $\mathfrak{b}=\omega_1$ and $\mathfrak{c}=\omega_2$.

Abstract:We consider the definability of mad families in vector spaces of the form $\underset{n<\omega}{\bigoplus} F$ where $F$ is a field of cardinality $\leq \aleph_0$. We show that there is no analytic mad family of subspaces when $F=\mathbb{F}_2$, partially answering a question of Smythe. Our proof relies on a variant of Mathias forcing restricted to a certain idempotent ultrafilter whose existence follows from Glazer's proof of Hindman's theorem.

Abstract:Families of objects appear in several contexts, like algebraic topology, theory of deformations, theoretical physics, etc. An unified coordinate-free algebraic framework for families of geometrical quantities is presented here, which allows one to work without introducing ad hoc spaces, by using the language of differential calculus over commutative algebras. An advantage of such an approach, based on the notion of sliceable structures on cylinders, is that the fundamental theorems of standard calculus are straightforwardly generalized to the context of families. As an example of that, we prove the universal homotopy formula.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a notion of duality for matrix valued orthogonal polynomials with respect to a measure supported on the nonnegative integers. We show that the dual families are closely related to certain difference operators acting on the matrix orthogonal polynomials. These operators belong to the so called Fourier algebras, which play a key role in the construction of the families. In order to illustrate duality, we describe a family of Charlier type matrix orthogonal polynomials with explicit shift operators which allow us to find explicit formulas for three term recurrences, difference operators and square norms. These are the essential ingredients for the construction of different dual families.

Abstract:We consider families of chain-cochain infinite complexes $\mathcal C$ of spaces with elements depending on a number of parameters, and endowed with a converging associative multiple product. The existence of left/right local/non-local square-vanishing ideals is assumed for subspaces of $\mathcal C$-spaces. We show that a set of differential and orthogonality relations together with coherence conditions on indices of a chain-cochain complex $\mathcal C$ elements generates families of graded differential algebras. With the appropriate orthogonality conditions on completions of $\mathcal C$ elements in the multiple product, we define the equivalence classes of cohomology invariants.

Abstract:We give a short proof of the theorem due to Preiss and Rataj stating that there are no analytic maximal orthogonal families (mofs) of Borel probability measures on a Polish space. When the underlying space is compact and perfect, we show that the set of witnesses to non-maximality is comeagre. Our argument is based on the original proof by Preiss and Rataj, but with significant simplifications. The proof generalises to show that under $\mathsf{MA} + \neg \mathsf{CH}$ there are no $\mathbf{\Sigma^1_2}$ mofs, that under $\mathsf{PD}$ there are no projective mofs and that under $\mathsf{AD}$ there are no mofs at all. We also generalise a result due to Kechris and Sofronidis, stating that for every analytic orthogonal family of Borel probability measures there is a product measure orthogonal to all measures in the family, to states on a certain class of C*-algebras.

Abstract:Characterization of simultaneously similarity for commuting $m$-tuples of operators is an open problem even in finite-dimensional spaces; known as ``A wild problem in linear algebra". In this paper we offer a criteria for simultaneously similarity of $m$-tuples of $k$-cyclic commuting operators on an arbitrary Banach space. Moreover, we obtain an additional equivalence condition in the case of finite dimensional Banach spaces, which extends the result found in \cite{BS13} for pairs of cyclic commuting matrices. We also present two applications of our results, one in the case of general multiplication operators on Banach spaces of analytic function, and one for $m$-tuples of commuting square matrices.

Abstract:This paper treats linear algebra over a semiring pair, in a wide range of applications to tropical algebra and related areas such as hyperrings and fuzzy rings. First we present a more general category of ``pairs'' with their morphisms, called ``weak morphisms,'' paying special attention to supertropical pairs, hyperpairs, and the doubling functor. Then we turn to matrices and the question of whether the row rank, column rank, and submatrix rank of a matrix are equal. Often the submatrix rank is less than or equal to the row rank and the column rank, but there is a counterexample to equality, discovered some time ago by the second author, which we provide in a more general setting (``pairs of the second kind'') that includes the hyperfield of signs. Additional positive results include a version of Cramer's rule, and we find situations when equality holds, encompassing results by Akian, Gaubert, Guterman, Izhakian, Knebusch, and Rowen. We pay special attention to the question of whether $n+1$ vectors of length $n$ need be dependent. At the end, we introduce a category with stronger morphisms, that preserve a surpassing relation.

Abstract:In the present paper we study the following problem: how to construct a coherent orthoalgebra which has only a finite number of elements, but at the same time does not admit a bivaluation (i.e. a morphism with a codomain being an orthoalgebra with just two elements). This problem is important in the perspective of Bell-Kochen-Specker theory, since one can associate such an orthoalgebra to every saturated non-colorable finite configuration of projective lines. The first result obtained in this paper provides a general method for constructing finite orthoalgebras. This method is then applied to obtain a new infinite family of finite coherent orthoalgebras that do not admit bivaluations. The corresponding proof is combinatorial and yields a description of the groups of symmetries for these orthoalgebras.

Abstract:Sequences of bivariate orthogonal polynomials written as vector polynomials of increasing size satisfy a couple of three term relations with matrix coefficients. In this work, introducing a time-dependent parameter, we analyse a Lax-type pair system for the coefficients of the three term relations. We also deduce several characterizations relating the Lax-type pair, the shape of the weight, Stieltjes function, moments, a differential equation for the weight, and the bidimensional Toda-type systems.

Abstract:In this paper we study the BM quasi-Hermitian varieties introduced in [A. Aguglia, A. Cossidente, G. Korchmàros, On quasi-Hermitian Varieties, J. Combin. Des. 20 (2012) 433-447.] in characteristc $2$ and dimension $3$. After a brief investigation of their combinatorial properties, we first show that all of these varieties are projectively equivalent in non-zero even characteristic, exhibiting a behavior which is strikingly different from what happens in odd characteristic, see [A. Aguglia, L. Giuzzi, On the equivalence of certain quasi-Hermitian varieties, J. Combin. Des. 1-15 (2022)]. This completes the classification project started in that paper. Next, by using previous results, we explicitly determine and investigate the structure of the full collineation group stabilizing these varieties. Finally, as a byproduct of our investigation, we also construct and a family of simple orthogonal arrays $OA(q^5,q^4,q,2)$ with entries in ${\mathbb F}_q$ where $q$ is a power of $2$.

Abstract:In the several contexts such as combinatorial number theory, families of sets of positive integers closed under taking subsets have been investigated. %To investigate some property of an infinite set of positive integers, Then it is sometimes useful to give bijections between the set of the one-sided infinite sequences on the alphabet set $\{0,1\}$ and such a family of sets. The most typical example is the family of sum-free sets. Although such a kind of families covers a large class of families of sets, there are only a few considerations on bijections for the case where the sum-free property is replaced by another property. In this paper, we explicitly give a bijection and its inverse between the set of one-sided infinite sequences on the alphabet set $\{0,1\}$ and a family of sets which may be contained in a class of families closed under taking subsets. Moreover, we show that some extremal property in a particular family of sets is characterized by a discrete dynamical system based on this kind of bijections.

Abstract:Let $\Omega \subseteq {\bf R}^d$ be an open set of measure 1. An open set $D \subseteq {\bf R}^d$ is called a ``tight orthogonal packing region'' for $\Omega$ if $D-D$ does not intersect the zeros of the Fourier Transform of the indicator function of $\Omega$ and $D$ has measure 1. Suppose that $\Lambda$ is a discrete subset of ${\bf R}^d$. The main contribution of this paper is a new way of proving the following result (proved by different methods by Lagarias, Reeds and Wang and, in the case of $\Omega$ being the cube, by Iosevich and Pedersen: $D$ tiles ${\bf R}^d$ when translated at the locations $\Lambda$ if and only if the set of exponentials $E_\Lambda = \{\exp 2\pi i \lambda\cdot x: \lambda\in\Lambda\}$ is an orthonormal basis for $L^2(\Omega)$. (When $\Omega$ is the unit cube in ${\bf R}^d$ then it is a tight orthogonal packing region of itself.) In our approach orthogonality of $E_\Lambda$ is viewed as a statement about ``packing'' ${\bf R}^d$ with translates of a certain nonnegative function and, additionally, we have completeness of $E_\Lambda$ in $L^2(\Omega)$ if and only if the above-mentioned packing is in fact a tiling. Moduli spaces of semiorthogonal decompositions in families

Abstract:For a smooth projective family of schemes we prove that a semiorthogonal decomposition of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves of a fibre uniquely deforms over an étale neighbourhood of the point. We do this using a comparison theorem between semiorthogonal decompositions and decomposition triangles of the structure sheaf of the diagonal. We then apply to the latter a deformation theory for morphisms with a fixed lift of the target, which is developed in the appendix. Using this as a key ingredient we introduce a moduli space which classifies semiorthogonal decompositions of the category of perfect complexes of a smooth projective family. Using Artin's criterion, we show that this is an étale algebraic space over the base scheme of the family, which can be non-quasicompact and non-separated. We generalise this to families of geometric noncommutative schemes in the sense of Orlov. We also define a subfunctor classifying nontrivial semiorthogonal decompositions only, and conjecture it is an open and closed subspace.

Abstract: In this paper we investigate various properties of generalised pairs in families, especially boundedness of several kinds. We show that many statements for usual pairs do not hold for generalised pairs. In particular, we construct an unexpected counter-example to boundedness of generalised lc models with fixed appropriate invariants. We also show that the DCC of Iitaka volumes and existence of nef reduction maps fail in families of generalised pairs. In a positive direction we show boundedness of bases of log Calabi-Yau fibrations with their induced generalised pair structure under natural assumptions. Roughly speaking we prove this boundedness for fibrations whose general fibres belong to a bounded family and whose Iitaka volume is fixed.
Finitary affine oriented matroids

Abstract:We initiate the axiomatic study of affine oriented matroids (AOMs) on arbitrary ground sets, obtaining fundamental notions such as minors, reorientations and a natural embedding into the frame work of Complexes of Oriented Matroids. The restriction to the finitary case (FAOMs) allows us to study tope graphs and covector posets, as well as to view FAOMs as oriented finitary semimatroids. We show shellability of FAOMs and single out the FAOMs that are affinely homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^n$. Finally, we study group actions on AOMs, whose quotients in the case of FAOMs are a stepping stone towards a general theory of affine and toric pseudoarrangements. Our results include applications of the multiplicity Tutte polynomial of group actions of semimatroids, generalizing enumerative properties of toric arrangements to a combinatorially defined class of arrangements of submanifolds. This answers partially a question by Ehrenborg and Readdy.

An extension of the associated rational functions on the unit circle

Abstract:A special class of orthogonal rational functions (ORFs) is presented in this paper. Starting with a sequence of ORFs and the corresponding rational functions of the second kind, we define a new sequence as a linear combination of the previous ones, the coefficients of this linear combination being self-reciprocal rational functions. We show that, under very general conditions on the self-reciprocal coefficients, this new sequence satisfies orthogonality conditions as well as a recurrence relation. Further, we identify the Caratheodory function of the corresponding orthogonality measure in terms of such self-reciprocal coefficients. The new class under study includes the associated rational functions as a particular case. As a consequence of the previous general analysis, we obtain explicit representations for the associated rational functions of arbitrary order, as well as for the related Caratheodory function. Such representations are used to find new properties of the associated rational functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that every pair of absolutely compatible Hilbert space effects are coexistent and exhibit a partial orthogonality property. We introduce the notion of partially ortho-coexistence. We generalize absolute compatibility to obtain more examples of partially ortho-coexistent pairs and introduce the notion of generalized compatibility.
