Abstract:In this paper, a new four-level hybrid-clamped multilevel GaN totem-pole power factor correction (PFC) is presented. As a multilevel PFC, this topology can effectively reduce the voltage stress on MOSFETs and the input inductance. Under certain control method, the ripple frequency of the input inductance current is three times the average frequency of the switches on the high speed leg. This means that the inductance can be smaller. The hybrid clamping module brings automatic balancing function of capacitor voltage without voltage balancing control loop.

Abstract:Recently, multilevel converters with gallium nitride (GaN) devices have shown marvelous advantages for power factor correction (PFC) conversion to meet the increasingly higher efficiency and power density requirements. In the traditional design process for the multilevel PFC converter, it is necessary to separately optimize the devices of the corresponding breakdown voltage under different level number, which causes difficulty to the overall optimization of the entire system. In this paper, a unified minimum loss model for GaN switches regardless of voltage levels is proposed to optimize the efficiency based on device’s new figure-of-merit (NFoM) (NFoM = COSS(ER) RDS(on)). With the help of this unified minimum loss model, it simplifies the efficiency optimizing methodology according to the NFoMs of GaN devices for multilevel PFC converter. According to the methodology, a 2 kW cascaded H-bridge (CHB) PFC prototype is constructed to verify the design methodology, achieving over 99% efficiency with power density over 1000 W/in3 .

Abstract:In our paper [F.M. Li et al., 2008], two errors were noticed after the paper went to press. On page 3002, near the middle of the left column, it should say "In this method, zinc oxide and carbon powders are mixed together, usually in a ZnO:C ratio of 1: 1 or 1:4 by weight." In Fig. 8, on page 3005, the x-axis label should say "energy (eV)" instead of "wavelength (eV)." Also, this paper should have been designated as Invited, as it is now above.

Abstract:In today's power industry, a compact and highly efficient power converter is the main component for server power applications. The objective of this paper is to propose a totem-pole power factor correction (PFC) converter with DC-link voltage control strategies for data center applications. Gallium Nitride High Electron Mobility Transistors (GaN HEMTs) are also used to increase power density and conversion efficiency without the reverse recovery loss. With the derived equations of the converter loss, the dc-bus voltage control strategy is proposed to improve the conversion efficiency. Furthermore, this paper proposes the hold-up time extension method to increase the DC bus voltage under heavy load conditions. The reduction of the DC link capacitor capacitance is achievable, and the power factor can be improved in a wide range. A 2.9-kW GaN totem-pole PFC prototype is developed and fabricated to verify this paper's theoretical analysis. As demonstrated in the prototype's experimental results, the tested peak efficiency is 98.5% and the tested total harmonic distortion (THD) is less than 3%.

Abstract:In space-limited applications, multilevel converters with GaN devices have shown great advantages in efficiency and power density. In the traditional design process, for a selected voltage level number, the voltage rating of devices is decided; and, the loss of each device should be calculated. Furthermore, with the selectable numbers of voltage level increasing, the complexity of design grows rapidly. In this paper, a simplified method based on device Figure-of-Merit (FoM) is proposed. Given the efficiency requirement, optimal frequency and voltage level can be easily obtained. According to the method, a 2kW prototype is built, achieving over 99% efficiency and 1400W/in(3) power density.
