Optical Inertial Vibration Sensor System Using Grating Technology

Abstract:An innovative inertial vibration sensor based on moire fringe, which was generated by the relative movement of a pair of parallel gratings, is presented. One of the gratings was mounted on an inertial mass which was a part of the spring-mass-damping system, whereas the other was fixed to the sensor shell. The relationship between the moire fringe and the vibration state of the measur and was discussed in detail. By using the signal processing system board, together with a unique algorithm of subdivision and direction recognition, the moire fringes were converted into the direction and amplitude of the relative displacement with high resolution. The maximum amplitude of the relative displacement measurement is 2.5 mm with maximum error of 0.056 mu m and the measurement resolution can reach to 0.028 mu m. Furthermore, a temperature compensation circuit was also designed and tested, which indicates temperature immunity when taking photoelectric conversion into account. Finally, a digital compensatory filter for broadening the dynamic bandwidth with flat frequency response was developed to meet the demand in vibration measurement in the low frequency range. Abstract:Abstract Photodeformation involves two fundamental opto-electromechanical coupling phenomena: 1) the photovoltaic effect and 2) the converse piezoelectric effect. Irradiating high-energy lights, such as lasers or ultraviolet lights, on certain classes of photostrictive materials can trigger the photodeformation process and the induced strains can be used for non-contact precision actuation and control. This paper is to evaluate the sensitivity and the distributed control effectiveness of distributed optomechanical shell actuators. Various design parameters, e.g., in-plane and out-of-plane control actions, actuator sizes and locations, are evaluated and their sensitivities are reported.
Optical Sensing of Magnons Via the Magnetoelastic Displacement

Abstract:We show how to measure a steady-state magnon population in the magnetostatic mode of a ferromagnet or ferrimagnet, such as yttrium iron garnet. We adopt an optomechanical approach and utilize the magnetoelasticity of the ferromagnet. The magnetostrictive force dispersively couples magnons to the deformation displacement of the ferromagnet, which is proportional to the magnon population. By further coupling the mechanical displacement to an optical cavity that is resonantly driven by a weak laser, the magnetostrictively induced displacement can be sensed by measuring the phase quadrature of the optical field. The phase shows excellent linear dependence on the magnon population for a not very large population and can thus be used as a "magnometer" to measure the magnon population. We further study the effect of thermal noises and find a high signal-to-noise ratio even at room temperature. At cryogenic temperatures, the resolution of magnon excitation numbers is essentially limited by the vacuum fluctuations of the phase, which can be significantly improved by using a squeezed light.
Vibration Measurement of Smart Composite Structures by Using the New Intensity Modulated Optical Fiber Sensor

Abstract:A new intensity modulated optical fiber vibration sensor has been employed to monitor the vibration signal in the smart composite structures in this paper. The advantages of this sensor are the lower cost and the easy-to-use system. The sensors were fabricated using conventional 50/125 step-index multimode optical fibers and the custom-drawn epoxy resin capillary tube. The construction of this sensor is like the extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric(EFPI). A face coupling theory of the intensity modulated fiber optic vibration sensor is developed. This optical fiber sensor has been embedded in the end of the smart composite cantilevered beam. The static and dynamic characteristics of this optical fiber vibration sensor have been tested. At same time, the compared test of this sensor with the commercial piezoelectric transducer are also finished. The experimental results show that the new type intensity modulated optical fiber vibration sensor has higher sensitivity and better dynamic and static properties. The spectrum response of this sensor are also agreeable to that of the commercial transducer.

Abstract:A novel elasto-electro-chemical synergistic effect was proposed from piezoelectricity and electrochromism.A cost-effective, flexible and conformal, passively powered vibration sensor was realized.The sensor can provide not only in-situ visualization but also ex-situ recording of incident structural vibration.Monitoring structural vibration can provide quantitative information for both structural health evaluations and early-warning maintenance. The most classic vibration-based structural health monitoring is equipped with piezoelectric accelerometers, which is expensive and inconvenient due to cumbersome and time-consuming sensor installation and high power-consumptive data acquisition systems. One other main challenge with these systems is the inherent limitations for multi-point monitoring in critical elements with curvature due to their non-conformability. Here, inspired by the chameleon, we report a cost-effective, flexible and conformal, self-powered vibration sensor based on elasto-electro-chemical synergistic effect of piezoelectricity and electrochromism. The sensor can provide not only in-situ visualization, but also ex-situ recording of structural vibration due to the non-volatile color memory effect of electrochromism. The passive sensor system is composed of two distinct electronic components — ternary Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 piezoelectric single crystal ribbon sensors and a solid-state tungsten trioxide electrochromic indicator driven by vibration-induced voltage generated by the piezoelectric ribbons. Abstract:Mechanical degrees of freedom, which have often been overlooked in various quantum systems, have been studied for applications ranging from quantum information processing to sensing. Here, we develop a hybrid platform consisting of a magnomechanical cavity and an optomechanical cavity, which are coherently coupled by the straightway physical contact. The phonons in the system can be manipulated either with the magnetostrictive interaction or optically through the radiation pressure. Together with mechanical state preparation and sensitive readout, we demonstrate the microwave-to-optical conversion with an ultrawide tuning range up to 3 GHz. In addition, we observe a mechanical motion interference effect, in which the optically driven mechanical motion is canceled by the microwave-driven coherent motion. Manipulating mechanical oscillators with equal facility through both magnonic and photonic channels enables new architectures for signal transduction between the optical, microwave, mechanical, and magnetic fields. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.129.243601 © 2022 American Physical Society

Abstract:A multi-mode fiber-optic accelerometer, based on intensity modulation, designed for vibration measurement in electrical machines is presented. The sensor shows an acceleration sensitivity of 2181 m/s2; range of frequency of 0 - 600 Hz; resolution of 0.01 g and linearity error of less than 5%. This accelerometer has already been used in 100,000 kW high power generator. The wave shape and frequency spectrum of the vibration of stator winding were recorded for the first time in China.

Abstract:Cavity optomechanics offers a versatile platform for both fundamental physics and ultrasensitive sensing. Importantly, resonant enhancement in both optical and mechanical responses enables the highly sensitive optical detection of small forces, displacements, vibrations, and magnetic fields, enabling it a promising candidate of the next generation of ultrasensitive sensor networks. However, this is impeded by the fiber optic-incompatibility and intrinsic nature of existing optomechanical sensors. Here, we report the first demonstration of an optomechanical sensor network in terms of magnetic field detection, wherein multiple fiber-optic optomechanical sensors are connected into a standard single mode fiber. Building upon a commercially available fiber Bragg gratings, we realize a robust low-loss, low-noise, and polarization-insensitive coupling with light sources in a way compatible with fiber optics. This thus enables our optomechanical senor to fulfill the requirements for ultrasensitive sensor networks. Furthermore, in this sensor network we demonstrate the sensitivity of 8.73 pm/Gs for DC magnetic fields and 537 fT/Hz1/2 for AC magnetic fields in a magnetically unshielded environment with the ambient temperature and pressure, better than the reported values in previous optomechanical magnetometers. Our work sheds light on exploiting cavity optomechanics in the practical applications and ultrasensitive senor networks.

The Mutual Control Of Raman Laser And Vibration Of Micro-Resonator By Optomechanics

Abstract:We present a hybrid Raman-optomechanics model for exploring the mutual control of Raman laser and the vibration mode of micro-resonator by optomechanics, in which the Raman laser is modelled as the interaction between the optical mode in the micro-resonator and the molecular vibration of the material. We observe on the one side that the sidebands of the mechanical vibration of the micro-resonator can be stimulated when the system is driven into the Raman-laser regime, while this mechanical sideband cannot be observed if the system is below the threshold of the Raman laser, i.e., the system is out of the Raman laser regime. On the other hand, we find that the Raman laser or even high-order Raman-laser sideband can be stimulated when the vibration mode of the micro-resonator is stimulated. It is also shown that the frequency of the Raman laser can be controlled by tuning the parameter of the mechanical mode of the resonator, such as the frequency or damping rate of the mechanical mode. Our study opens up new dimension of research such as the control of Raman laser by optomechanics and the control of the mechanical motion of the micro-resonator by optical modulation.

Abstract:Abstract Mechanoluminescence is a smart light‐emitting phenomenon in which applied mechanical energy is directly converted into photon emissions. In particular, mechanoluminescent materials have shown considerable potential for applications in the fields of energy and sensing. This study thoroughly investigates the mechanoluminescence and long afterglow properties of singly doped and codoped Sr 2 MgSi 2 O 7 (SMSO) with varying concentrations of Eu 2+ and Dy 3+ ions. Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis of its multimode luminescence properties, including photoluminescence, mechanoluminescence, long afterglow, and X‐ray‐induced luminescence, is conducted. In addition, the density of states mapping is acquired through first‐principles calculations, confirming that the enhanced mechanoluminescence properties of SMSO primarily stem from the deep trap introduced by Dy 3+ . In contrast to traditional mixing with Polydimethylsiloxane, in this study, the powders are incorporated into optically transparent wood to produce a multiresponse with mechanoluminescence, long afterglow, and X‐ray‐excited luminescence. This structure is achieved by pretreating natural wood, eliminating lignin, and subsequently modifying the wood to overall modification using various smart phosphors and epoxy resin composites. After natural drying, a multifunctional composite wood structure with diverse luminescence properties is obtained. Owing to its environmental friendliness, sustainability, self‐power, and cost‐effectiveness, this smart mechanoluminescence wood is anticipated to find extensive applications in construction materials and energy‐efficient displays.

Abstract:A kind of novel fiber cantilever vibration sensor with the structure of single mode-multimode-gap-single mode (SMGS) fiber is proposed based on the effect of multimode interference.The beam propagation method (BPM) is adopted to simulate the light propagation in the fibers.The finite element model of the cantilever is established in order to analyze the vibration characteristics of tihe optic-fiber cantilever,and the optimal design of this kind of fiber vibration sensors is conducted in theory.In the experiment.s,lhc fiber cantilevers with the length of 22 mm are fabricated by four different lengths of multimode fibers.The characteristics of cantilevers vibration with different lengths of multimode fibers are analyzed in details.The experimental results agree well with the theoretical simulation results.It shows that the proposed SMGS sensor has the maximum sensitivity of 4 mV/mPa at the frequency point of 130 kHz and the linear correlation coefficient of 0.9962.The experimental results indicate that this kind of sensor has a linear response and good repeatability within given sound pressure level.The proposed sensor maintains the advantages of easy preparation,low-cost and high-sensitivity,which is expected to he applied to the field of the remote vibration sensing of some special resonance frequency points.

Abstract:Optomechanical systems have been exploited in ultrasensitive measurements of force, acceleration, and magnetic fields. The fundamental limits for optomechanical sensing have been extensively studied and now well understood -- the intrinsic uncertainties of the bosonic optical and mechanical modes, together with the backaction noise arising from the interactions between the two, dictate the Standard Quantum Limit (SQL). Advanced techniques based on nonclassical probes, in-situ pondermotive squeezed light, and backaction-evading measurements have been developed to overcome the SQL for individual optomechanical sensors. An alternative, conceptually simpler approach to enhance optomechanical sensing rests upon joint measurements taken by multiple sensors. In this configuration, a pathway toward overcoming the fundamental limits in joint measurements has not been explored. Here, we demonstrate that joint force measurements taken with entangled probes on multiple optomechanical sensors can improve the bandwidth in the thermal-noise-dominant regime or the sensitivity in shot-noise-dominant regime. Moreover, we quantify the overall performance of entangled probes with the sensitivity-bandwidth product and observe a 25% increase compared to that of the classical probes. The demonstrated entanglement-enhanced optomechanical sensing could enable new capabilities for inertial navigation, acoustic imaging, and searches for new physics.

Abstract:Optomechanical sensing based on the coupling between mechanical motions and optical resonances has attracted huge interest in sensor applications due to its small footprint, high sensitivity, low detection limit, and electromagnetic immunity. Optomechanical sensors that detect from mechanical motion at µm scale to molecular vibration at nm scale have found various applications such as force, inertia, acoustic, chemical, and thermal sensing, etc. In this review, we provide an overview of the recent progress of optomechanical sensors. Three development fields of optomechanical sensors are reviewed, which are passive optomechanical sensors, electro-optomechanical sensing platforms, and molecular vibration sensing schemes. The sensor configurations, applications, and integrations are described. In the end, we also provide our perspectives on the future development directions of optomechanical sensors.

Abstract:Stimulated Brillouin interaction between sound and light, known to be the strongest optical nonlinearity common to all amorphous and crystalline dielectrics, has been widely studied in fibers and bulk materials but rarely in optical microresonators. The possibility of experimentally extending this principle to excite mechanical resonances in photonic microsystems, for sensing and frequency reference applications, has remained largely unexplored. The challenge lies in the fact that microresonators inherently have large free spectral range, while the phase matching considerations for the Brillouin process require optical modes of nearby frequencies but with different wavevectors. We rely on high-order transverse optical modes to relax this limitation. Here we report on the experimental excitation of mechanical resonances ranging from 49 to 1400 MHz by using forward Brillouin scattering. These natural mechanical resonances are excited in ~100 um silica microspheres, and are of a surface-acoustic whispering-gallery type.

Abstract:Vibrational spectroscopy is a ubiquitous technology that derives the species, constituents, and morphology of an object from its natural vibrations. However, the vibrational spectra of mesoscopic particles - including most biological cells - have remained hidden from existing technologies. These particles are expected to vibrate faintly at megahertz to gigahertz rates, imposing unpractical sensitivity and resolution for current optical and piezoelectric spectroscopy. Here we demonstrate the real-time measurement of natural vibrations of single mesoscopic particles using an optical microresonator, extending the reach of vibrational spectroscopy to a new spectral window. Conceptually, a spectrum of vibrational modes of the particles is stimulated photoacoustically, and correlated to a high-quality-factor optical resonance for the ultrasensitive readout. Experimentally, this scheme is testified by measuring mesoscopic particles with different constituents, sizes, and internal structures, showing an unprecedented signal-to-noise ratio of 50 dB and detection bandwidth over 1 GHz. This new technology is further applied for the biomechanical fingerprinting of single microbial cells with different species and living states. The present method opens up new avenues to study single-particle mechanical properties in vibrational degrees of freedom, and may find applications in photoacoustic sensing and imaging, cavity optomechanics and biomechanics.
Mechanical photoluminescence excitation spectra of a strongly driven spin-mechanical system

Abstract:We report experimental studies of a driven spin-mechanical system, in which a nitrogen vacancy (NV) center couples to out-of-plane vibrations of a diamond cantilever through the excited-state deformation potential. Photoluminescence excitation studies show that in the unresolved sideband regime and under strong resonant mechanical driving, the excitation spectra of a NV optical transition feature two spectrally sharp peaks, corresponding to the two turning points of the oscillating cantilever. In the limit that the strain-induced frequency separation between the two peaks far exceeds the NV zero-phonon linewidth, the spectral position of the individual peak becomes sensitive to minute detuning between the mechanical resonance and the external driving force. For a fixed optical excitation frequency near the NV transition, NV fluorescence as a function of mechanical detuning features resonances with a linewidth that can be orders of magnitude smaller than the intrinsic linewidth of the mechanical mode. This enhanced sensitivity to mechanical detuning can potentially provide an effective mechanism for mechanical sensing, for example, mass sensing via measurements of induced changes in the mechanical oscillator frequency.
