Abstract:In March 2007 the assembly of the Silicon Strip Tracker was completed at the Tracker Integration Facility at CERN. Nearly 15% of the detector was instrumented using cables, fiber optics, power supplies, and electronics intended for the operation at the LHC. A local chiller was used to circulate the coolant for low temperature operation. In order to understand the efficiency and alignment of the strip tracker modules, a cosmic ray trigger was implemented. From March through July 4.5 million triggers were recorded. This period, referred to as the Sector Test, provided practical experience with the operation of the Tracker, especially safety, data acquisition, power, and cooling systems. This paper describes the performance of the strip system during the Sector Test, which consisted of five distinct periods defined by the coolant temperature. Significant emphasis is placed on comparisons between the data and results from Monte Carlo studies.

Abstract:The CMS silicon tracker consists of two tracking devices utilizing semiconductor technology: the inner pixel and the outer strip detectors. They operate in a high-occupancy and high-radiation environment presented by particle collisions in the LHC. The tracker detectors occupy the region around the center of CMS, where the LHC beams collide, between 4 cm and 110 cm in radius and up to 280 cm along the beam axis. The pixel detector consists of 66 million pixels, covering about 1 m2 total area. It is surrounded by the strip tracker with 10 million read-out channels covering about 200 m2 total area. The proceedings describe the operational experience collected during the first three years of LHC running. Results include operational challenges encountered during data taking that influence the active fraction and read-out efficiency of the detectors. Details are given about the performance of the tracker at high occupancy with respect to local observables such as signal to noise ratio and hit reconstruction efficiency. Studies of radiation effects are presented with respect to the evolution of sensor bias, read-out thresholds in the inner pixels, and leakage current.

Abstract:With an active silicon area of more than 200 squaremetres, the silicon strip tracker of the CMS experiment, one of the experiments currently under construction for the future Large Hadron Collider at CERN, will be by far the largest silicon tracker in the world. Efficient mass production and rigid quality control are crucial to finish the detector, comprising of more than 15000 silicon strip modules, in time with optimal quality. After excellent performance of substructures has been proven in various test beam experiments, integration of the active detector elements into the mechanical support structures as well as cabling and testing of these integrated structures has now started. In this article the CMS silicon strip tracker is described. Production, quality control and integration procedures are outlined and the detector status is reviewed. The detector performance in a recent test beam experiment is summarized.

Abstract:The CMS silicon strip tracker involves about 70 m2 of instrumented silicon, with approximately 18500 microstrip detectors read out by 5 × 106 electronics channels. It has to satisfy a set of stringent requirements imposed by the environment and by the physics expected at the LHC: low cell occupancy and good resolution, radiation hardness aided by adequate cooling, low mass combined with high stability. These conditions have been incorporated in a highly modular design of the detector modules and their support structures, chosen to facilitate construction and to allow for easy assembly and maintenance.

Abstract:The Phase-2 Upgrade [1] of the CMS Outer Tracker [2] requires the production of 7608 Strip-Strip (2S) and 5592 Pixel-Strip (PS) modules, altogether incorporating 45 192 hybrid circuits of 15 design variants. The module design makes the potential repairs impractical; therefore, performing production-scale testing of the hybrids is essential. Accordingly, a scalable, crate-based test system was designed and manufactured, allowing for parallel, high-throughput testing. To reproduce the operating conditions, the system was integrated within a climate chamber, which required the development of a remote control interface and the calibration of thermal cycles. The results and lessons learned from the test system integration and commissioning will be presented.

Abstract:The CMS tracker consists of two tracking systems utilizing semiconductor technology: the inner pixel and the outer strip detectors. The tracker detectors occupy the volume around the beam interaction region between 3 cm and 110 cm in radius and up to 280 cm along the beam axis. The pixel detector consists of 124 million pixels, corresponding to about 2 m$^{2}$ total area. It plays a vital role in the seeding of the track reconstruction algorithms and in the reconstruction of primary interactions and secondary decay vertices. It is surrounded by the strip tracker with 10 million read-out channels, corresponding to 200 m$^{2}$ total area. The tracker is operated in a high-occupancy and high-radiation environment established by particle collisions in the LHC. The performance of the silicon strip detector continues to be of high quality. The pixel detector that has been used in Run 1 and in the first half of Run 2 was, however, replaced with the so-called Phase-1 Upgrade detector. The new system is better suited to match the increased instantaneous luminosity the LHC would reach before 2023. It was built to operate at an instantaneous luminosity of around 2$\times$10$^{34}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. The detector's new layout has an additional inner layer with respect to the previous one; it allows for more efficient tracking with smaller fake rate at higher event pile-up. The paper focuses on the first results obtained during the commissioning of the new detector. It also includes challenges faced during the first data taking to reach the optimal measurement efficiency. Details will be given on the performance at high occupancy with respect to observables such as data-rate, hit reconstruction efficiency, and resolution.

Abstract:First results for the AMS silicon tracker readout performance are presented. Small 20.0×20.0×0.300mm3 silicon microstrip detectors were installed in a 50GeV electron beam at CERN. The detector readout consisted of prototypes of the tracker data reduction card equipped with a 12-bit ADC and the tracker frontend hybrid with VA_hdr readout chips. The system performance is assessed in terms of signal-to-noise, position resolution, and efficiency.

Abstract:The CMS tracker consists of 206 square meters of silicon strip sensors assembled on carbon fibre composite structures and is designed for operation in the temperature range from -25 to +25 degrees C. The mechanical stability of tracker components during physics operation was monitored with a few micron resolution using a dedicated laser alignment system as well as particle tracks from cosmic rays and hadron-hadron collisions. During the LHC operational period of 2011-2013 at stable temperatures, the components of the tracker were observed to experience relative movements of less than 30 microns. In addition, temperature variations were found to cause displacements of tracker structures of about 2 microns/degree C, which largely revert to their initial positions when the temperature is restored to its original value.

Abstract:We report recent results on the use of charge division to obtain a longitudinal coordinate from silicon strip detectors, and on sources of electronic readout noise for long, thin strips. These results hold promise for the design of Linear Collider charged particle tracking system composed of silicon microstrip sensors.

Abstract:A precise and efficient tracking is one of the critical components of the CMS physics program as it impacts the ability to reconstruct the physics objects needed to understand proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The CMS detector has undergone extensive improvements in preparation for Run 3 of the LHC to operate efficiently at the increased luminosity and pileup. Significant algorithmic enhancements have been implemented to enhance the performance of the CMS tracking system. These enhancements concentrate on refining both track finding and selection processes. Performance measurements of the track reconstruction both in simulation and collision data will be presented. The performance is assessed using LHC Run 2 at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and early LHC Run 3 data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV.

Abstract:The CMS Collaboration conducted a month-long data-taking exercise known as the Cosmic Run At Four Tesla in late 2008 in order to complete the commissioning of the experiment for extended operation. The operational lessons resulting from this exercise were addressed in the subsequent shutdown to better prepare CMS for LHC beams in 2009. The cosmic data collected have been invaluable to study the performance of the detectors, to commission the alignment and calibration techniques, and to make several cosmic ray measurements. The experimental setup, conditions, and principal achievements from this data-taking exercise are described along with a review of the preceding integration activities.

Abstract:The CBM experiment is a fixed-target heavy-ion physics experiment at the future FAIR facility, designed to explore the QCD phase diagram at high baryon-net densities and moderate temperatures. To address its complex physics program, the experiment is conceived to operate at beam–target interaction rates up to 10 MHz with self-triggered front-end electronics and free-streaming readout architecture. The Silicon Tracking System (STS) of CBM is the main charged-particle tracker, capable of delivering time-stamped hits for online tracking and event building, and momentum measurement inside a superconducting dipole magnet. The functional unit of the STS is the detector module, a device assembled from a double-sided silicon microstrip sensor connected via a stack of microcables to a pair of front-end boards carrying the readout electronics. The assembly and successful operation of STS modules, produced with close-to-final components, was an important milestone achieved in recent years. The systematic study of the modules’ performance is also necessary for optimizing the assembly procedure and ensuring high production yield. This work reports a series of tests, which aim to evaluate the module’s operation and establish the basic criteria for quality control. It summarizes the procedures and results of different measurements performed with the modules, starting with noise estimation and charge amplitude calibration, resulting in the linearization of the channel’s ADC and a homogeneous threshold distribution. Those results were verified using a radioactive source. Additionally, first conclusions concerning the assembly yield in terms of number of functional channels were obtained. These studies represent a fundamental step towards the series production readiness for the final STS detector.

Alignment of the CMS Tracker: Results from LHC Run 3

Abstract:The strategies for and the performance of the CMS tracker alignment during the ongoing Run 3 data-taking period are described. The results of the very first tracker alignment for Run 3 data reprocessing performed with cosmic rays and collision tracks recorded at the unprecedented center of mass energy of 13.6 TeV are presented. Also, the performance after deployment of a more granular automated alignment associated with the improvement of the alignment calibration already during data taking is discussed. Finally, the prospects for the tracker alignment calibration during the Run 3 data-taking period, in light of the gained operational experience, are discussed.

Abstract:The CMS experiment at the LHC includes a hybrid silicon pixel detector for the reconstruction of charged tracks and of the interaction vertices. The barrel region consists of n-in-n sensors with 100X150 um^2 cell size processed on diffusion oxygenated float zone silicon. A biasing grid is implemented and pixel isolation is achieved with the moderated p-spray technique. An extensive test program was carried out on the H2 beam line of the CERN SPS. In this paper we describe the sensor layout, the beam test setup and the results obtained with both irradiated and non-irradiated prototype devices. Measurements of charge collection, hit detection efficiency, Lorentz angle and spatial resolution are presented.

40 MHz readout of CMS silicon modules in a high intensity beam

Abstract:In order to maintain its outstanding performance under the challenging conditions brought by the high-luminosity LHC, the CMS collaboration is preparing the production of a new outer tracker detector. The upgraded detector modules will feature two silicon sensors and the ability of reading out correlated clusters, or stubs, compatible with high transverse momentum particles at the full 40 MHz collision rate. With the detector design being finalised and mass production planned to start during the second half of 2024, the scalability of the readout system and the study of the commissioning and characterisation of the detector in realistic conditions are ever-more pressing. In this context, a joint beam-test was organised in collaboration with the MUonE collaboration where twelve modules were placed in an asynchronous muon beam line reaching particle rates of about 50 MHz, with the full stub stream being recorded to disk triggerless. The experiment and read-out chain is outlined, the commissioning procedures and operational challenges discussed and resulting system performance are presented.

Abstract:Monolithic silicon sensors developed with High-Voltage CMOS (HV-CMOS) processes have become highly attractive for charged particle tracking. Compared with the standard CMOS sensors, HV-CMOS sensors can provide larger and deeper depletion regions that lead to larger signals and faster charge collection. They can provide high position resolution, low material budget, high radiation hardness and low cost that are desirable for high performance tracking in harsh collision environment. Various studies have been conducted to explore the technology feasibility for the large-area tracking systems at future collider experiments. CHESS (CMOS HV/HR Evaluation for Strip Sensor) sensor series have been developed as an alternative solution to the conventional silicon micro-strip detectors for the ATLAS inner tracker upgrade. The first prototype (named CHESS1) was to evaluate the diode geometry and the in-pixel analog electronics. Obtained test results were used to optimize the second prototype (named CHESS2). CHESS2 was implemented with a full digital readout architecture and realized as a full reticle sized monolithic sensor. In this paper, the basic characteristics of the CHESS2 prototype sensors and their performance in response to different input signals are presented.

Abstract:The CMS Tracker Phase-2 Upgrade requires the production of new sensor modules to cope with the requirements of the HL-LHC. The two main building blocks of the Outer Tracker are the Strip-Strip and Pixel-Strip modules. All-together 47'520 hybrid circuits will be produced to construct 8'000 Strip-Strip and 5'880 Pixel-Strip modules. The circuit designs for the mass production were fine-tuned and kick-off batches were manufactured to verify the latest changes in the designs before the series production. This contribution focuses on lessons learned from the prototyping stage, design optimization details for the mass production as well as test results and production yield from the kick-off batches.

Abstract:In the passive CMOS Strips Project, strip sensors were designed at the University of Bonn and produced by LFoundry in 150 nm technology, with an additional backside processing from IZM Berlin. Up to five individual reticules were connected by stitching at the foundry in order to obtain the typical strip lengths required for the LHC Phase-II upgrade of ATLAS or CMS trackers. After dicing, sensors were tested in a probe station and characterised with a Sr90-source as well as laser-based edge- and top-TCT systems. Sensors were also simulated using Sentaurus TCAD. At last, detector modules were constructed from several sensors and thoroughly studied in two beam campaigns at DESY. All of these measurements were performed before and after irradiation. This contribution provides an overview of simulation results, summarises the laboratory measurements and in particular presents first test beam results for irradiated and unirradiated passive CMOS strip sensors. We are demonstrating that large area sensors with sufficient radiation hardness can be obtained by stitching during the CMOS process, and presenting our plans for the next submission in the framework of this project.

Abstract:ATLAS has formed strip CMOS project to study the use of CMOS MAPS devices as silicon strip sensors for the Phase-II Strip Tracker Upgrade. This choice of sensors promises several advantages over the conventional baseline design, such as better resolution, less material in the tracking volume, and faster construction speed. At the same time, many design features of the sensors are driven by the requirement of minimizing the impact on the rest of the detector. Hence the target devices feature long pixels which are grouped to form a virtual strip with binary-encoded z position. The key performance aspects are radiation hardness compatibility with HL-LHC environment, as well as extraction of the full hit position with full-reticle readout architecture. To date, several test chips have been submitted using two different CMOS technologies. The AMS 350nm is a high voltage CMOS process (HV-CMOS), that features the sensor bias of up to 120V. The TowerJazz 180nm high resistivity CMOS process (HR-CMOS) uses a high resistivity epitaxial layer to provide the depletion region on top of the substrate. We have evaluated passive pixel performance, and charge collection projections. The results strongly support the radiation tolerance of these devices to radiation dose of the HL-LHC in the strip tracker region. We also describe design features for the next chip submission that are motivated by our technology evaluation.
Beam Test Performance Studies of CMS Phase-2 Outer Tracker Module Prototypes

Abstract:A new tracking detector will be installed as part of the Phase-2 upgrade of the CMS detector for the high-luminosity LHC era. This tracking detector includes the Inner Tracker, equipped with silicon pixel sensor modules, and the Outer Tracker, consisting of modules with two parallel stacked silicon sensors. The Outer Tracker front-end ASICs will be able to correlate hits from charged particles in these two sensors to perform on-module discrimination of transverse momenta $p_\mathrm{T}$. The $p_\mathrm{T}$ information is generated at a frequency of 40 MHz and will be used in the Level-1 trigger decision of CMS. Prototypes of the so-called 2S modules were tested at the Test Beam Facility at DESY Hamburg between 2019 and 2020. These modules use the final front-end ASIC, the CMS Binary Chip (CBC), and for the first time the Concentrator Integrated Circuit (CIC), optical readout and on-module power conversion. In total, seven modules were tested, one of which was assembled with sensors irradiated with protons. An important aspect was to show that it is possible to read out modules synchronously. A cluster hit efficiency of about 99.75% was achieved for all modules. The CBC $p_\mathrm{T}$ discrimination mechanism has been verified to work together with the CIC and optical readout. The measured module performance meets the requirements for operation in the upgraded CMS tracking detector.
