Abstract:Rough set theory is a useful tool to deal with uncertain, granular and incomplete knowledge in information systems. And it is based on equivalence relations or partitions. Matroid theory is a structure that generalizes linear independence in vector spaces, and has a variety of applications in many fields. In this paper, we propose a new type of matroids, namely, partition-circuit matroids, which are induced by partitions. Firstly, a partition satisfies circuit axioms in matroid theory, then it can induce a matroid which is called a partition-circuit matroid. A partition and an equivalence relation on the same universe are one-to-one corresponding, then some characteristics of partition-circuit matroids are studied through rough sets. Secondly, similar to the upper approximation number which is proposed by Wang and Zhu, we define the lower approximation number. Some characteristics of partition-circuit matroids and the dual matroids of them are investigated through the lower approximation number and the upper approximation number.

Abstract:We investigate possible linear, algebraic, and Frobenius flock characteristic sets of matroids. In particular, we classify possible combinations of linear and algebraic characteristic sets when the algebraic characteristic set is finite or cofinite. We also show that the natural density of an algebraic characteristic set in the set of primes may be arbitrarily close to any real number in the unit interval. Frobenius flock realizations can be constructed from algebraic realizations, but the converse is not true. We show that the algebraic characteristic set may be an arbitrary cofinite set even for matroids whose Frobenius flock characteristic set is the set of all primes. In addition, we construct Frobenius flock realizations in all positive characteristics from linear realizations in characteristic 0, and also from Frobenius flock realizations of the dual matroid.

Abstract:As the matrix can compactly represent numeric data, simplify problem formulation and reduce time complexity, it has many applications in most of the scientific fields. For this purpose, some types of generalized rough sets have been connected with matrices. However, covering-based rough sets which play an important role in data mining and machine learning are seldom connected with matrices. In this paper, we define three composition operations of coverings and study their characteristic matrices; Moreover, the relationships between the characteristic matrices and covering approximation operators are investigated. First, for a covering, an existing matrix representation of indiscernible neighborhoods called the type-1 characteristic matrix of the covering is recalled and a new matrix representation of neighborhoods called the type-2 characteristic matrix of the covering is proposed. Second, considering the importance of knowledge fusion and decomposition, we define three types of composition operations of coverings. Specifically, their type-1 and type-2 characteristic matrices are studied. Finally, we also explore the representable properties of covering approximation operators with respect to any covering generated by each composition operation. It is interesting to find that three types of approximation operators, which are induced by each type of composition operation of coverings, can be expressed as the Boolean product of a coefficient matrix and a characteristic vector. These interesting results suggest the potential for studying covering-based rough sets by matrix approaches.

Abstract:We prove that certain quotients of entire functions are characteristic functions. Under some conditions, the probability measure corresponding to a characteristic function of that type has a density which can be expressed as a generalized Dirichlet series, which in turn is an infinite linear combination of exponential or Laplace densities. These results are applied to several examples.

Abstract:According to the equivalence class,the concept nodes of CS(K)(Concept Lattice) are partitioned.The characteristics of rough sets and S-rough sets are analyzed.The definitions of rough sets and S-rough sets on CS(K) are given and the related theorem is presented.The relation between the concept lattice and S-rough sets is found.At last,the characteristics of S-rough sets are illnstrated with an example.

Abstract:Suppose that $f$ is the characteristic function of a probability measure on the real line $\R$. In this paper, we deal with the following problem posed by N.G. Ushakov: Is it true that $f$ is never determined by its imaginary part $\Im f$? In other words, is it true that for any characteristic function $f$ there exists a characteristic function $g$ such that $\Im f\equiv \Im g$ but $ f\not\equiv g$? We study this question in the more general case of the characteristic function defined on an arbitrary locally compact abelian group. A characterization of what characteristic functions are uniquely determined by their imaginary parts are given. As a consequence of this characterization, we obtain that several frequently used characteristic functions on the classical locally compact abelian groups are uniquely determined by their imaginary parts.

The Beurling-Wintner problem for characteristic functions

Abstract:This paper concerns a long-standing problem raised by Beurling and Wintner on completeness of the dilation system $\{\varphi(kx):k=1,2,\cdots\}$ generated by the odd periodic extension on $\mathbb{R}$ of any $\varphi\in L^2[0,1]$. Up to now there has been no explicit description of solutions of the Beurling-Wintner problem even for characteristic functions. We focus on characteristic function $\mathbf{1}_V$ of an open subset $V$ of $(0,1)$ where $V$ is the union of finitely many intervals with rational endpoints. Using substantially techniques from analytic number theory, we fully solved the Beurling-Wintner problem in most interesting situations and exhibit the explicit form of such $V$. As a consequence, it yields a complete solution for the rational version of Kozlov's problem. Moreover, we find that the Beurling-Wintner problem is closely related to the Twin Prime Conjecture and the Sophie Germain Prime Conjecture.

On the Efficiency of Solving Boolean Polynomial Systems with the Characteristic Set Method

Abstract:An improved characteristic set algorithm for solving Boolean polynomialsystems is proposed. This algorithm is based on the idea of converting all thepolynomials into monic ones by zero decomposition, and using additions toobtain pseudo-remainders. Three important techniques are applied in thealgorithm. The first one is eliminating variables by new generated linearpolynomials. The second one is optimizing the strategy of choosing polynomialfor zero decomposition. The third one is to compute add-remainders to eliminatethe leading variable of new generated monic polynomials. By analyzing the depthof the zero decomposition tree, we present some complexity bounds of thisalgorithm, which are lower than the complexity bounds of previouscharacteristic set algorithms. Extensive experimental results show that thisnew algorithm is more efficient than previous characteristic set algorithms forsolving Boolean polynomial systems.

Abstract:The purpose of the present paper is to give unified expressions to the characteristic functions of all elliptical and related distributions. Those distributions including the multivariate elliptical symmetric distributions and some asymmetric distributions such as skew-elliptical distributions and their location-scale mixtures. In particular, we get simple closed form of characteristic functions for important cases such as the multivariate Student-$t$, Cauchy, logistic, Laplace, symmetric stable. The expressions of characteristic functions involve Bessel type functions or generalized hypergeometric series.

Abstract:It is well known that a polynomial in one variable is completely determined by its zeros (counting multiplicities). We generalize this result to an ideal of polynomials in several variables by introducing the characteristic spaces of the ideal. One finds that the ideal is completely determined by its characteristic spaces on a characteristic set. In particular, a primary ideal is completely determined by its characteristic space at any zero point. Some straightforward applications of the above results yield the algebraic reduction theorem for analytic Hilbert modules in several variables. Also, we obtain some general rigidity results for analytic Hilbert modules by using the techniques of AF-envelopes of analytic Hilbert modules.

Abstract:Using the methods from topological dynamics, H. Furstenberg introduced the notion of a central set and proved the famous Central Sets Theorem. Later D. De, Neil Hindman, and D. Strauss [Fund. Math.199 (2008), 155-175.] established a stronger version of the Central Sets Theorem and then introduced the notion of $C$-sets satisfying the Central Sets Theorem and studied the properties of these sets. For any weak mixing system $\left(X, \mathcal{B},\mu, T\right),$ and $A_{0},A_{1}\in\mathcal{B}$, with $\mu\left(A_{0}\right)\mu\left(A_{1}\right)>0$, R. Kung and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://X.Ye" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> [Disc. Cont. Dyn. sys., 18 (2007) 817-827.] proved that the set $N\left(A,B\right)= \left\{n:\mu\left(A_{0}\cap T^{-n}A_{1}\right)>0\right\}$ intersects all sets of positive upper Banach density. However, later N. Hindman and D. Strauss [New York J. Math. 26 (2020) 230-260.] proved that there exist $C$-sets having zero upper Banach density. Inspired by this result, in this article, we prove that $N\left(A, B \right)$ intersects with all $C$-sets. Then we introduce the notion of a dynamical $C^{\star}$-set and then we study their combinatorial properties.

Abstract:We relate Fubini's theorem for Euler characteristics to Riemann-Hurwtiz formulae, and reprove a classical result of Iversen. The techniques used include algebraic geometry, complex geometry, and model theory. Possible applications to the study of wild ramification in finite characteristic are discussed.

We test these characteristic p versions of the conjecture against several families of Jacobian pairs in characteristic p. Based on the results we propose a characteristic p approach to solving the Jacobian Conjecture in characteristic 0.

Abstract:This paper is dedicated to the introduction in a circle of ideas and methods, which are connected with the notion of characteristic function of a non-selfadjoint operator. We start with the consideration of closed and open systems (Subsections 2.1.1-2.1.2). In Subsections 2.1.2-2.1.3 we introduce the notion of operator colligation and define the characteristic function of the operator colligation as transfer function of the corresponding open system. In Section 3 we state three basic properties of the c.o.f.. First (Subsection 3.1), we note that the c.o.f. is the full unitary invariant of the operator colligation. Second (see Theorem 3.4), it turns out that the invariant subspaces of the corresponding operator are associated with left divisors of the c.o.f.. Third, the $J$-property of the c.o.f. (see (3.6)-(3.8)) is a basic property which determines the class of c. o. f. (see Section 4). In Chapter 4 we describe the classes of characteristic functions which play an important role in our considerations. In Chapter 5 we state necessary facts on multiplicative integral. Chapter 6 is devoted to the factorization theorem (Theorem 6.7) for matrix-valued characteristic function. In Chapter 7 we construct a triangular Livšic model of bounded linear operator and as application we obtain some known results on dissipative operators.

Abstract:Making use of an elementary fact on invariant subspace and determinant of a linear map and the method of algebraic identities, we obtain a factorization formula for a general characteristic polynomial of a matrix. This answers a question posed in [A. Deng, I. Sato, Y. Wu, Characteristic polynomials of ramified uniform covering digraphs,European J. Combin. 28 (2007) 1099–1114]. The approach of this work can be used to supply alternative proofs of several other earlier results, including some results of [Y. Teranishi, Equitable switching and spectra of graphs, Linear Algebra Appl. 359 (2003) 121–131].
