Abstract:In this paper, we generalize Minkowski's theorem. This theorem is usually stated for a centrally symmetric convex body and a lattice both included in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In some situations, one may replace the lattice by a more general set for which a notion of density exists. In this paper, we prove a Minkowski theorem for Meyer sets, which bounds from below the frequency of differences appearing in the Meyer set and belonging to a centrally symmetric convex body. In the later part of the paper, we develop quite natural applications of this theorem to Diophantine approximation and to discretization of linear maps.

Abstract:In 2012, Meyer introduced the notions of generalized almost periodic measure and almost periodic pattern and proved that regular model sets in Euclidean space are almost periodic patterns. Here, we prove the converse in a slightly more general setting. Specifically, we show that a Meyer set in any $\sigma$-compact locally compact abelian group is a regular model set if and only if it is an almost periodic pattern.

Abstract:We consider diffraction of Delone sets in Euclidean space. We show that the set of Bragg peaks with high intensity is always Meyer (if it is relatively dense). We use this to provide a new characterization for Meyer sets in terms of positive and positive definite measures. Our results are based on a careful study of positive definite measures, which may be of interest in its own right.

Abstract:Given a weak model set in a locally compact Abelian, group we construct a relatively dense set of common Bragg peaks for all its subsets that have non-trivial Bragg spectrum. Next, we construct a relatively dense set of common norm almost periods for the diffraction, pure point, absolutely continuous and singular continuous spectrum, respectively, of all its subsets. We use the Fibonacci model set to illustrate these phenomena. We extend all these results to arbitrary translation bounded weighted Dirac combs supported within some Meyer set. We complete the paper by discussing extensions of the existence of the generalized Eberlein decomposition for measures supported within some Meyer set.

On higher dimensional arithmetic progressions in Meyer sets

Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of higher dimensional arithmetic progression in Meyer sets. We show that the case when the ratios are linearly dependent over $\ZZ$ is trivial, and focus on arithmetic progressions for which the ratios are linearly independent. Given a Meyer set $\Lambda$ and a fully Euclidean model set $\oplam(W)$ with the property that finitely many translates of $\oplam(W)$ cover $\Lambda$, we prove that we can find higher dimensional arithmetic progressions of arbitrary length with $k$ linearly independent ratios in $\Lambda$ if and only if $k$ is at most the rank of the $\ZZ$-module generated by $\oplam(W)$. We use this result to characterize the Meyer sets which are subsets of fully Euclidean model sets.

Abstract:Freiman's theorem gives a lower bound for the cardinality of the doubling of a finite set in $\RR^n$. In this paper we give an interpretation of his theorem for monomial ideals and their fiber cones. We call a quasi-equigenerated monomial ideal a Freiman ideal, if the set of its exponent vectors achieves Freiman's lower bound for its doubling. Algebraic characterizations of Freiman ideals are given, and finite simple graphs are classified whose edge ideals or matroidal ideals of its cycle matroids are Freiman ideals.

Abstract:Approximate lattices of locally compact groups were first studied in a seminal monograph of Yves Meyer and were subsequently used in the theory of aperiodic order to model objects such as Pisot numbers, quasi-cristals or aperiodic tilings. Meyer studied approximate lattices of Euclidean spaces - now dubbed Meyer sets. A fascinating feature of this theory is the wealth of natural and equivalent definitions of Meyer sets that are available. The study of approximate lattices in non-commutative groups has recently attracted more attention. They are meant as generalisation of lattices of locally compact groups (i.e. discrete subgroup of finite co-volume) and, as such, are roughly defined as approximate subgroups of locally compact groups that are both discrete and have finite co-volume. In this generalized framework, the correct notion of `finite co-volume' is however up for interpretation. A number of definitions recently arose following work of Björklund and Hartnick, Hrushovski, and the author. In stark contrast with the Euclidean framework, little is known of the relations between these notions. Our main objective in this paper is to address this issue. We establish clear relations between these definitions and show that, in fact, these definitions are not all equivalent. We prove nevertheless that all the notions mentioned are related to one another and simply represent varying degrees of generality. Among the original results we prove here, we extend a cornerstone theorem of Meyer and show that all strong approximate lattices are laminar; we build measures with weak invariance properties on the invariant hull of approximate lattices; we use quasi-models to show that any BH-approximate lattice is contained in an approximate lattice; we prove that even laminar approximate lattices can be arbitrarily far from strong approximate lattices and model sets.

On dense intermingling of exact overlaps and the open set condition

Abstract:We prove that certain families of homogenous affine iterated function systems in $\mathbb{R}^d$ have the property that the open set condition and the existence of exact overlaps both occur densely in the space of translation parameters. These examples demonstrate that in the theorems of Falconer and Jordan-Pollicott-Simon on the almost sure dimensions of self-affine sets and measures, the set of exceptional translation parameters can be a dense set. The proof combines results from the literature on self-affine tilings of $\mathbb{R}^d$ with an adaptation of a classic argument of Erdős on the singularity of certain Bernoulli convolutions. Our result encompasses a one-dimensional example due to Kenyon which arises as a special case.

Abstract:In the first section we review the beautiful combinatorial theory of Ramsey as well as the history of Szemerédi’s theorem. In Section 2 we give a sketch of Ruzsa’s modern proof of Freiman’s theorem on sumsets which plays an important role in Gowers’ quantitative proof of Szemerédi’s theorem. In the last section we deduce Roth’s theorem (Szemerédi’s theorem in the case k=3) from the Triangle Removal Lemma (in graph-theoretic language) which is an application of Szemerédi’s Regularity Lemma (a powerful tool in graph theory), and show the BalogSzemerédi-Gowers theorem by a graph-theoretic method.

Abstract:We prove that every real number in [0,1] is the Hausdorff dimension of a Hamel basis of the vector space of reals over the field of rationals. The logic of our proof is of particular interest. The statement of our theorem is classical; it does not involve the theory of computing. However, our proof makes essential use of algorithmic fractal dimension--a computability-theoretic construct--and the point-to-set principle of J. Lutz and N. Lutz (2018).

Feasibly Constructive Proof of Schwartz-Zippel Lemma and the Complexity of Finding Hitting Sets

Abstract:The Schwartz-Zippel Lemma states that if a low-degree multivariate polynomial with coefficients in a field is not zero everywhere in the field, then it has few roots on every finite subcube of the field. This fundamental fact about multivariate polynomials has found many applications in algorithms, complexity theory, coding theory, and combinatorics. We give a new proof of the lemma that offers some advantages over the standard proof. First, the new proof is more constructive than previously known proofs. For every given side-length of the cube, the proof constructs a polynomial-time computable and polynomial-time invertible surjection onto the set of roots in the cube. The domain of the surjection is tight, thus showing that the set of roots on the cube can be compressed. Second, the new proof can be formalised in Buss' bounded arithmetic theory $\mathrm{S}^1_2$ for polynomial-time reasoning. One consequence of this is that the theory $\mathrm{S}^1_2 + \mathrm{dWPHP(PV)}$ for approximate counting can prove that the problem of verifying polynomial identities (PIT) can be solved by polynomial-size circuits. The same theory can also prove the existence of small hitting sets for any explicitly described class of polynomials of polynomial degree. To complete the picture we show that the existence of such hitting sets is \emph{equivalent} to the surjective weak pigeonhole principle $\mathrm{dWPHP(PV)}$, over the theory $\mathrm{S}^1_2$. This is a contribution to a line of research studying the reverse mathematics of computational complexity. One consequence of this is that the problem of constructing small hitting sets for such classes is complete for the class APEPP of explicit construction problems whose totality follows from the probabilistic method. This class is also known and studied as the class of Range Avoidance Problems.

Abstract:An extension of Szemerédi's Theorem is proved for sets of positive density in approximate lattices in general locally compact and second countable abelian groups. As a consequence, we establish a recent conjecture of Klick, Strungaru and Tcaciuc. Via a novel version of Furstenberg's Correspondence principle, which should be of independent interest, we show that our Szemerédi Theorems can be deduced from a general \emph{transverse} multiple recurrence theorem, which we establish using recent works of Austin.

Abstract:In [11], Mioduszewski characterized inverse sequences of polyhedra for which their inverse limits are homeomorphic. In this article, we obtain a more general characterization: we characterize inverse sequences of arbitrary compact metric spaces and continuous single-valued functions for which their inverse limits are homeomorphic. In our approach, set-valued functions are used instead of continuous single-valued functions in almost commutative diagrams. Using this characterization we give an alternative proof that the Brouwer-Janiszewski-Knaster continuum and the pseudo-arc are circle-like continua.

Relative weak compactness in infinite-dimensional Fefferman-Meyer duality

Abstract:Let $E$ be a Banach space such that $E'$ has the Radon-Nikodým property. The aim of this work is to connect relative weak compactness in the $E$-valued martingale Hardy space $H^{1}(\mu,E)$ to a convex compactness criterion in a weaker topology, such as the topology of uniform convergence on compacts in measure. These results represent a dynamic version of the deep result of Diestel, Ruess, and Schachermayer on relative weak compactness in $L^{1}(\mu,E)$. In the reflexive case, we obtain a Kadec-Pełczyński dichotomy for $H^{1}(\mu,E)$-bounded sequences, which decomposes a subsequence into a relatively weakly compact part, a pointwise weakly convexly convergent part, and a null part converging to zero uniformly on compacts in measure. As a corollary, we investigate a parameterized version of the vector-valued Komlós theorem without the assumption of $H^{1}(\mu,E)$-boundedness.

Abstract:We investigate possible linear, algebraic, and Frobenius flock characteristic sets of matroids. In particular, we classify possible combinations of linear and algebraic characteristic sets when the algebraic characteristic set is finite or cofinite. We also show that the natural density of an algebraic characteristic set in the set of primes may be arbitrarily close to any real number in the interval $[0,1]$. Frobenius flock realizations can be constructed from algebraic realizations, but the converse is not true. We show that the algebraic characteristic set may be an arbitrary cofinite set even for matroids whose Frobenius flock characteristic set is the set of all primes. In addition, we construct Frobenius flock realizations in all positive characteristics from linear realizations in characteristic 0, and also from Frobenius flock realizations of the dual matroid.

Abstract:In this note, we provide two characterizations of the set of integer points in an integral bisubmodular polyhedron. Our characterizations do not require the assumption that a given set satisfies the hole-freeness, i.e., the set of integer points in its convex hull coincides with the original set. One is a natural multiset generalization of the exchange axiom of a delta-matroid, and the other comes from the notion of the tangent cone of an integral bisubmodular polyhedron.

Characterizing real-representable matroids with large average hyperplane-size

Abstract:Generalizing a theorem of the first two authors and Geelen for planes, we show that, for a real-representable matroid $M$, either the average hyperplane-size in $M$ is at most a constant depending only on its rank, or each hyperplane of $M$ contains one of a set of at most $r(M)-2$ lines. Additionally, in the latter case, the ground set of $M$ has a partition $(E_{1}, E_{2})$, where $E_{1}$ can be covered by few flats of relatively low rank and $|E_{2}|$ is bounded. Finally, we formulate a high-dimensional generalization of a classic problem of Motzkin, Grünbaum, Erdős and Purdy on sets of red and blue points in the plane with no monochromatic blue line. We show that the solution to this problem gives a tight upper bound on $|E_{2}|$. We also discuss this high-dimensional problem in its own right, and prove some initial results.
