Abstract:A new explanation for space contraction and time dilation in special relativity is offered based on kinetic energy differences between observers rather than velocity differences. The classical (Newtonian) concept of projectile motion underwent a series of seemingly minor changes and adjustments between the discovery of the quantum (Planck, 1900) and the early codification of quantum theory (Dirac, 1928). The goal of physicists in this period was to keep change to a minimum and preserve as much as possible of the traditional projectile paradigm (TPP). These adjustments were successful in masking an all-out projectile paradigm crisis, but they have left us with a conceptual muddle. This has been especially deleterious for special relativity and our understanding of space contraction and time dilation. A reinterpretation of projectile motion focusing on kinetic energy permits a new understanding of relativistic space contraction and time dilation.

Galilean Relativity and the Path Integral Formalism in Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:Closed systems in Newtonian mechanics obey the principle of Galilean relativity. However, the usual Lagrangian for Newtonian mechanics, formed from the difference of kinetic and potential energies, is not invariant under the full group of Galilean transformations. In quantum mechanics Galilean boosts require a non-trivial transformation rule for the wave function and a concomitant "projective representation" of the Galilean symmetry group. Using Feynman's path integral formalism this latter result can be shown to be equivalent to the non-invariance of the Lagrangian. Thus, using path integral methods, the representation of certain symmetry groups in quantum mechanics can be simply understood in terms of the transformation properties of the classical Lagrangian and conversely. The main results reported here should be accessible to students and teachers of physics -- particularly classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and mathematical physics -- at the advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate levels, providing a useful exposition for those wanting to explore topics such as the path integral formalism for quantum mechanics, relativity principles, Lagrangian mechanics, and representations of symmetries in classical and quantum mechanics.

Abstract:The connection between kinematics and work-energy principles is often not emphasized enough for students to appreciate fully. Highlighting the relationship between the kinematic equations and the conservation of total mechanical energy is crucial. We revisit the solution to Galileo's kinematic paradox from an energy perspective. Galileo stated that the time it takes for an object to travel from the top to the bottom point of a vertical circle is the same regardless of its path. While mathematical proofs of this statement using kinematic approaches are well-documented, this paper explores the problem from an energy standpoint, using experimental evidence to elucidate the relationship between kinematics and energy.

Abstract:It is shown that the correct expressions for momentum and kinetic energy of a particle moving at high speed were already implicit in physics going back to Maxwell. The demonstration begins with a thought experiment of Einstein by which he derived the inertial equivalence of energy, independently of the relativity postulates. A simple modification of the same experiment does the rest.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a theory of Special Relativity valid for the entire speed range without the assumption of constant speed of light. Two particles species are defined, one species of particles have rest frames with rest mass, and another species of particles do not have rest frame and can not define rest mass. We prove that for the particles which have rest frames, the Galilean transformation is the only linear transformation of space-time that allows infinite speed of particle motion. Hence without any assumption, an upper bound of speed is required for all non-Galilean linear transformations. We then present a novel derivation of the mass-velocity and the mass-energy relations in the framework of relativistic dynamics, which is solely based on the principle of relativity and basic definitions of relativistic momentum and energy. The generalized Lorentz transformation is then determined. The new relativistic formulas are not related directly to the speed of light $c$, but are replaced by a Relativity Constant $C_R$ which is an universal speed constant of the Nature introduced in relativistic dynamics. Particles having rest mass are called tardyons moving slower than $C_R$. Particles having neither rest frames nor rest mass are called $tachyons$ moving faster than $C_R$, and with the real mass-velocity relation $m=|\vec{p}_\infty |(v^2-C_R^2)^{-1/2}$ where $\vec{p}_\infty $ is the finite momentum of tachyon at infinite speed. Moreover, the particles with constant-speed $C_R$, also having neither rest frames nor rest mass, are called $constons$. For all particles, $p^2=\vec{p}^2-({E^2}/{C_R^2})$ remains invariant under transformation between inertia frames. The invariant reads $p^2=-m_0^2C_R^2 <0$ for tardyons, $p^2 =0$ for constons and $p^2=|\vec{p}_\infty|^2 >0$ for tachyons, respectively.

Abstract:We consider a scenario that involves a machine gun, the bullets it fires and a moving target, considered from the rest frame of the machine gun and from the rest frame of the target respectively. Involving the special relativity via its two postulates and the time dilation formula we derive the relativistic velocity addition law showing that it leads to the Lorentz transformations for the space-time coordinates of the same event.

Abstract:The principles of behavior of the system with discrete interactions are applied to description of motion of the relativistic particle. Applying the concept of non-local behavior both to position in space and to time, the apparently covariant equation of motion of the particle (Klein-Gordon) is defined. Based on the assumption that the form of the equation has to be invariant in inertial reference frames, the principle of constancy of the speed of light can be deduced. Consequently the basic statements of special relativity can be established in relation to the principles of discrete interaction. The condition that Klein-Gordon equation was established without explicit use of the principle of correspondence gives a way to specify the area of applicability of the statement about the speed of light as the maximal speed of propagation of information. This would permit interpretation of superluminal phenomena with no contradictions to special relativity. The conventional interpretation of time as a category which specifies succession and coexistence of events leads to interpreting of the Klein-Gordon and related equations (such as Maxwell or Dirac) as equations of the fields. This would justify the procedure of second quantization, so that the states of the field are identified with the sets of particles.

Abstract:We show that the Schrödinger equation can be derived assuming the Galilean covariance of a generic wave equation and the validity of the de Broglie's wave-particle duality hypothesis. We also obtain from this set of assumptions the transformation law for the wave function under a Galilean boost and prove that complex wave functions are unavoidable for a consistent description of a physical system. The extension to the relativistic domain of the above analysis is also provided. We show that Lorentz covariance and wave-particle duality are consistent with two different transformation laws for the wave function under a Lorentz boost. This leads to two different wave equations, namely, the Klein-Gordon equation and the Lorentz covariant Schrödinger equation.

Abstract:In this paper, we aim to resolve two fundamental issues in the dynamics of relativity: (i) Under what condition, the time-column space integrals of a Lorentz four-tensor constitute a Lorentz four-vector, and (ii) under what condition, the time-element space integral of a Lorentz four-vector is a Lorentz scalar; namely two "conservation laws", which are mispresented in traditional textbooks, and widely used in fundamental research, such as relativistic analysis of the momentum of light in a medium, and the proofs of the positive mass theorem in general relativity. To resolve issue (i), we have developed a generalized Lorentz \emph{four-vector} theorem based on the principles of classical mathematical analysis, with a simplified analytic example given to illustrate how to transform a space integral from one inertial frame to another, and a strict mathematical derivation provided to confirm the effect of Lorentz contraction. We use this four-vector theorem to verify M{\o}ller's theorem, and surprisingly find that M{\o}ller's theorem is fundamentally wrong. We provide a corrected version of M{\o}ller's theorem. We also use this four-vector theorem to analyze a plane light wave in a moving uniform medium, and find that the momentum and energy of Minkowski quasi-photon constitute a Lorentz four-vector and Planck constant is a Lorentz invariant. To resolve issue (ii), we have developed a generalized Lorentz \emph{scalar} theorem. We use this theorem to verify the "invariant conservation law" in relativistic electrodynamics, and unexpectedly find that it is also fundamentally wrong. Thus the two "conservation laws" in traditional textbooks, which have magically attracted several generations of most outstanding scientists, turned out to be imaginary, just like the emperor's new clothes; creating a scientific myth in the modern theoretical and mathematical physics: Believing is seeing.

Abstract:There are several ways to derive Einstein's celebrated formula for the energy of a massive particle at rest, E = mc2. Noether's theorem applied to the relativistic Lagrange function provides an unambiguous and straightforward access to energy and momentum conservation laws but those tools were not available at the beginning of the twentieth century and are not at hand for newcomers even nowadays. In the so-called pedestrian approach for newcomers, we start from relativistic kinematics and analyze elastic and inelastic scattering processes in different reference frames to derive the relativistic energy-mass relation. We extend the analysis to Compton scattering between a massive particle and a photon, and a massive particle emitting two photons. Using the Doppler formula, it follows that E = ħω for photons at angular frequency ω where ħ is the reduced Planck constant. We relate our work to other derivations of Einstein's formula in the literature.

Abstract:We determine the Lorentz transformations and the kinematic content and dynamical framework of special relativity as purely an extension of Galileo's thoughts. No reference to light is ever required: The theories of relativity are logically independent of any properties of light. The thoughts of Galileo are fully realized in a system of Lorentz transformations with a parameter 1/c^2, some undetermined, universal constant of nature; and are realizable in no other. Isotropy of space plays a deep and pivotal role in all of this, since here three-dimensional space appears at first blush, and persists until the conclusion: Relativity can never correctly be fully developed in just one spatial dimension.

Abstract:There are many books on the classical subject of special relativity. However, after having spent a number of years, both in relativistic engineering and research with relativity, I have come to the conclusion that there exist a place for a new book. I do believe that the present book is not quite the same as the others, mainly due to attempt to cast light on dark corners. I should make it clear what this little book is not. It is not a textbook on relativity theory. What the book is about is the nature of special relativistic kinematics, its relation to space and time, and the operational interpretation of coordinate transformations. Every theory contains a number of quantities that can be measured by experiment and an expressions that cannot possibly be observed. Whenever we have a theory containing an arbitrary convention, we should examine what parts of the theory depend on the choice of that convention and what parts do not. The distinction is not always made and many authors claim some data to be observable, according to arbitrary conventions, which do not correspond to any physical experiment. This leads to inconsistencies and paradoxes that should be avoided at all cost.

A Fundamental, Relativistic and Irreversible Law of Motion: A Unification of Newton's Second Law of Motion and the Second Law of Thermodynamics

Abstract:Temperature is an outsider in the laws of motion given by Newton and Einstein and this oversight is the source of the predictions of time-reversal-invariance made by these two great systems of motion. By taking into consideration Planck's law of blackbody radiation and the Doppler effect, in thinking about Maxwell's electromagnetic wave equation, I have shown that photons, in the environment through which any charged particle moves, act as a source of temperature-dependent friction on everything from elementary particles to galaxies. Because the optomechanical friction is universal and inevitable, no real systems are conservative, and temperature can no longer be an outsider in a fundamental and irreducible law of motion. I have defined the change of entropy (\Delta S) in irreversible systems at constant temperature in terms of the optomechanical friction. The Second Law of Thermodynamics, which states that \Delta S > 0 for spontaneous processes, is explained by electromagnetic interactions between charged particles and the Doppler-shifted photons through which they move as opposed to chance and statistics. \Delta S, as defined here, is not subject to Poincaré's recurrence theorem. Consequently, the Second Law of Thermodynamics is shown to be a fundamental law rather than a statistical law. This result, which supports the idea that every instant of time is unique, is consistent with intuition and the routine experience of botanists.

Abstract:In this article we exploit the fact that the special relativistic formula which relates the energy and the 3-momentum of an elementary particle with its rest mass, resembles the pythagorean theorem for right triangles. Using such triangles, suitably arranged, we can prove all kind of equalities or inequalities concerning the kinematical properties of elementary particles in a wide variety of cases regarding particles' collision, decay or production. Moreover, relations that are somehow hard to produce by the usual analytic methods arise much more naturally through geometric constructions based on right triangles.

Abstract:A partially alternative derivation of the expression for the time dilation effect in a uniform static gravitational field is obtained by means of a thought experiment in which rates of clocks at rest at different heights are compared using as reference a clock bound to a free falling reference system (FFRS). Derivations along these lines have already been proposed, but generally introducing some shortcut in order to make the presentation elementary. The treatment is here exact: the clocks whose rates one wishes to compare are let to describe their world lines (Rindler's hyperbolae) with respect to the FFRS, and the result is obtained by comparing their lengths in space-time. The exercise may nonetheless prove pedagogically instructive insofar as it shows that the some results of General Relativity (GR) can be obtained in terms of physical and geometrical reasoning without having recourse to the general formalism. The corresponding GR metric is derived, to the purpose of making a comparison with solutions of Einstein field equation and with other metrics. For this reasons this paper also compels to deal with a few subtle points inherent in the very foundations of GR.

Abstract:The definitions of gravitational work as well as work done by the total external force on a massive probe particle moving in generic spacetime backgrounds are proposed. These definitions are given in the form of scalar integrals and thus, are independent of coordinate choices. However, the dependence on the choice of observer field is essential and inevitable. The definitions are checked in the case of Minkowski, Schwarzschild, Reisner-Nordström and Kerr-Newman spacetimes and agreements with Newtonian mechanical definitions are verified in the slow motion or the far field limit.

Abstract:A detailed consideration of the Klein-Gordon equation in relativistic quantum mechanics is presented in order to offer more clarity than many standard approaches. The equation is frequently employed in the research literature, even though problems have often been raised regarding its second-order nature, the status of its negative-energy solutions and the formulation of particle density and flux. Most of these problems can be avoided by dismissing the negative-energy solutions. An application of the equation to a broad wave-packet shows that a small amendment to the usual relativistic formalism can be helpful to demonstrate continuity with the non-relativistic case, although difficulties remain when the proposed quantum state has a broad relativistic energy distribution.
