Abstract:It is shown that the correct expressions for momentum and kinetic energy of a particle moving at high speed were already implicit in physics going back to Maxwell. The demonstration begins with a thought experiment of Einstein by which he derived the inertial equivalence of energy, independently of the relativity postulates. A simple modification of the same experiment does the rest.

Abstract:The Orthodox kinetic energy has, in fact, two hidden-variable components: one linked to the current (or Bohmian) velocity, and another linked to the osmotic velocity (or quantum potential), and which are respectively identified with phase and amplitude of the wavefunction. Inspired by Bohmian and Stochastic quantum mechanics, we address what happens to each of these two velocity components when the Orthodox kinetic energy thermalizes in closed systems, and how the pertinent weak values yield experimental information about them. We show that, after thermalization, the expectation values of both the (squared) current and osmotic velocities approach the same stationary value, that is, each of the Bohmian kinetic and quantum potential energies approaches half of the Orthodox kinetic energy. Such a `kinetic energy equipartition' is a novel signature of quantum thermalization that can empirically be tested in the laboratory, following a well-defined operational protocol as given by the expectation values of (squared) real and imaginary parts of the local-in-position weak value of the momentum, which are respectively related to the current and osmotic velocities. Thus, the kinetic energy equipartion presented here is independent on any ontological status given to these hidden variables, and it could be used as a novel element to characterize quantum thermalization in the laboratory, beyond the traditional use of expectation values linked to Hermitian operators. Numerical results for the nonequilibrium dynamics of a few-particle harmonic trap under random disorder are presented as illustration. And the advantages in using the center-of-mass frame of reference for dealing with systems with many indistinguishable particles are also discussed.

Abstract:The question of what is the source of the energy carried by the radiation is discussed. The case of a hyperbolic motion is analyzed, describing the solutions suggested in the past for the "energy balance paradox". The solution to the paradox is found in considerind the stress force created in the curved electric field of the accelerated charge, that acts as a reaction force. The work performed by the external force to overcome this stress force is the source of the energy carried by the radiation. This stress force is the spatial component of the four-vactor called "Schott term", that appears in Abraham four-vector. This novel approach solves the "energy balance paradox".

Abstract:We present a brief introduction to the relativistic kinetic theory of gases with emphasis on the underlying geometric and Hamiltonian structure of the theory. Our formalism starts with a discussion on the tangent bundle of a Lorentzian manifold of arbitrary dimension. Next, we introduce the Poincare one-form on this bundle, from which the symplectic form and a volume form are constructed. Then, we define an appropriate Hamiltonian on the bundle which, together with the symplectic form yields the Liouville vector field. The corresponding flow, when projected onto the base manifold, generates geodesic motion. Whenever the flow is restricted to energy surfaces corresponding to a negative value of the Hamiltonian, its projection describes a family of future-directed timelike geodesics. A collisionless gas is described by a distribution function on such an energy surface, satisfying the Liouville equation. Fibre integrals of the distribution function determine the particle current density and the stress-energy tensor. We show that the stress-energy tensor satisfies the familiar energy conditions and that both the current and stress-energy tensor are divergence-free. Our discussion also includes the generalization to charged gases, a summary of the Einstein-Maxwell-Vlasov system in any dimensions, as well as a brief introduction to the general relativistic Boltzmann equation for a simple gas.

Abstract:In a previous paper, we have shown that Newton's third law cannot strictly hold in a distributed system of which the different parts are at a finite distance from each other. This is due to the finite speed of signal propagation which cannot exceed the speed of light in vacuum, which in turn means that when summing the total force in the system the force does not add up to zero. This was demonstrated in a specific example of two current loops with time dependent currents, the above analysis led to suggestion of a relativistic engine. Since the system is effected by a total force for a finite period of time this means that the system acquires mechanical momentum and energy, the question then arises how can we accommodate the law of momentum and energy conservation. The subject of momentum conservation was discussed in a pervious paper, while preliminary results regarding energy conservation where discussed in some additional papers. Here we give a complete analysis of the exchange of energy between the mechanical part of the relativistic engine and the field part, the energy radiated from the relativistic engine is also discussed. We show that the relativistic engine effect on the energy is 4th-order in 1c and no lower order relativistic engine effect on the energy exists.

Abstract:We consider two different forms for a relativistic version of a linear restoring force. The pair comes from taking Hooke’s law to be the force appearing on the right-hand side of the relativistic expressions: dp/dt or dp/dτ. Either formulation recovers Hooke’s law in the non-relativistic limit. In addition to these two forces, we introduce a form of retardation appropriate for the description of a linear (in displacement) force arising from the interaction of a pair of particles with a relativistic field. The procedure is akin to replacing Coulomb’s law in electromagnetism with a retarded form (the first correction in the full relativistic case). This retardation leads to the expected oscillation, but with amplitude growth in both its relativistic and non-relativistic incarnations.

Abstract:Modern physics is based on Newton’s laws of motion, which describe interaction via forces. In this paper, we argue that interaction needs to be described in terms of processes. By introducing the momentum work and the associated momentum energy in mechanics, we present a coherent formulation of the process equations for mechanics and thermodynamics. This naturally leads to a simple derivation of the Lorentz-transformed mass, according to which any object changes its mass in real terms when its velocity is changed. Momentum work requires a revision of Newton’s laws of motion. For the first time in the history of physics, the elastic collision between objects, such as particles, can be described as a temporal process, not as interaction via force = counter-force. The mechanism of energy conversion during the elastic collision and other mechanical processes, such as free fall, becomes clear and demonstrates the validity of the principle of energy conservation on microscale at any point in time. The results suggest that physics can be rebuilt on a more coherent footing of dynamic processes up to quantum-process thermodynamics.

New Results by Low Momentum Approximation from Relativistic Quantum Mechanics Equations and Suggestion of Experiments

Abstract:A fundamental belief is that the formulism of relativistic quantum mechanics equations (RQMEs) should remain in low momentum motion. However, it is found that some formulas from RQMEs were lost in Schrodinger equation. For example, a free relativistic particle has positive and negative energy branches. The former includes positive kinetic energy (PKE) and the latter negative kinetic energy (NKE). The latter should be treated on an equal footing as the former. Nevertheless, from Schrodinger equation, a free particle can have only PKE. Starting from RQMEs and taking low momentum approximation, we derive NKE Schrodinger equation which is for the cases that free particles have NKE. Thus negative energy branch of RQMEs can be retained in low momentum motion. We point out a fact that whether Schrodinger equation is applicable in a region where a particle's energy E is less than potential V, E V, has never been quantitatively verified. In such a region NKE Schrodinger equation should be employed. With the help of NKE Schrodinger equation, the lost formulas are recovered. The so-called difficulty of negative probability of Klein-Gordon equation for free particles is solved. A PKE (NKE) particle can have stationary motion only when it is subject to an attractive (repulsive) potential, which is determined by Virial theorem. Two NKE electrons in a potential can constitute a stable system, a new kind of possible mechanism for electron paring. The whole discussion stems from RQMEs with no any new postulation. Experiments are suggested, which may confirm that there are indeed NKE electrons.

Abstract:Starting from the classical Newton's second law which, according to our assumption, is valid in any instantaneous inertial rest frame of body that moves in Minkowskian space-time we get the relativistic equation of motion $\vec{F}=d\vec{p}/dt$, where $\vec{p}$ is the relativistic momentum. The relativistic momentum is then derived without referring to any additional assumptions concerning elastic collisions of bodies. Lorentz-invariance of the relativistic law is proved without tensor formalism. Some new method of force transformation is also presented.

Abstract:The kinetic description of relativistic plasmas in the presence of time-varying and spatially non-uniform electromagnetic fields is a fundamental theoretical issue both in astrophysics and plasma physics. This refers, in particular, to the treatment of collisionless and strongly-magnetized plasmas in the presence of intense radiation sources. In this paper the problem is investigated in the framework of a covariant gyrokinetic treatment for Vlasov-Maxwell equilibria. The existence of a new class of kinetic equilibria is pointed out, which occur for spatially-symmetric systems. These equilibria are shown to exist in the presence of non-uniform background EM fields and curved space-time. In the non-relativistic limit this feature permits the determination of kinetic equilibria even for plasmas in which particle energy is not conserved due to the occurrence of explicitly time-dependent EM fields. Finally, absolute stability criteria are established which apply in the case of infinitesimal symmetric perturbations that can be either externally or internally produced.

Abstract:An open problem of the derivation of the relativistic Vlasov equation for systems of charged particles moving with velocities up to the speed of light and creating the electromagnetic field in accordance with the full set of the Maxwell equations is considered. Moreover, the method of derivation is illustrated on the non-relativistic kinetic model. Independent derivation of the relativistic hydrodynamics is also demonstrated. The key role of these derivations of the hydrodynamic and kinetic equations includes the explicit operator of averaging on the physically infinitesimal volume suggested by L.S. Kuzmenkov.

Abstract:We derive the relativistic kinetic equation and collision kernel for dense gases of spin $0$ particles from quantum field theory based on the Wigner-function formalism. The formalism developed by Degroot can be used as an effective way for density expansion of the kinetic equation. The kinetic equation obtained in the lowest order in density recovers the Boltzmann equation with a nonlocal binary collision term. Keeping this expansion procedure, we derive the triple collision term, which can be seen as a relativistic extension of correspondent works on the transport research about dense gases in the non-relativistic cases. Considering the widespread practicability in different physical systems, the kinetic equation for dense gases we obtain shall be put into good use.

Abstract:We uncover the existence of a universal phenomenon concerning the electromagnetic optical force exerted by light or other electromagnetic waves on a distribution of charges and currents in general, and of particles in particular. This conveys the appearence of underlying reactive quantities that hinder radiation pressure and currently observed time-averaged forces. This constitutes a novel paradigm of the mechanical efficiency of light on matter, and completes the landscape of the electromagnetic force in classical electrodynamics; widening our understanding in the design of both illumination and particles in optical manipulation without the need of increasing the illuminating power, and thus lowering dissipation and heating. We show that this may be accomplished through the minimization of what we establish as the reactive strength of canonical (i.e. orbital) momentum, which plays against the optical force a role analogous to that of the reactive power versus the radiation efficiency of an antenna. This long time overlooked quantity, important for current progress of optical manipulation, and that stems from the complex Maxwell theorem of conservation of complex momentum that we put forward, as well as its alternating flow associated to the imaginary part of the complex Maxwell stress tensor, conform the imaginary Lorentz force that we introduce in this work, and that like the reactive strength of orbital momentum, is antagonic to the well-known time-averaged force; thus making this reactive Lorentz force indirectly observable near wavelengths at which the time-averaged force is lowered.

On the Gravitational Hysteresis in the Kinetic Theory

Abstract:General theory of relativity is non--linear in nature and therefore can result in hysteresis--like effects and cause systems to remember the footprint of the gravitational field. Here we have investigated this effect using the Kinetic theory in curved spacetime. It is shown that entropy rate experiences this hysteresis behavior. Then, the effect is considered for some special cases.

Abstract:We consider the physical implications of various choices of the three-momentum basis in the kappa-deformed Poincare algebra. In particular, we find that the energy dependence of the velocity of a kappa-particle leads to unexpected features in kappa-deformed kinematics. We also discuss the notion of kappa-deformed dynamics, and as a tool example we investigate the motion of a kappa-deformed particle under the action of a constant force.

Abstract:The relativistic effect of energy increase in a particle freely moving in vacuum is discussed on the basis of quantum field theory and probability theory using some ideas of super-symmetrical theories. The particle is assumed to consist of a "seed" whose energy is equal to the particle rest energy and whose pulse is equal to the product of the particle mass by its velocity and of a "fur coat" - the system of virtual quanta of the material field - vacuum. Each of these quanta possesses the same energy and pulse as the "seed" but have no mass. The system of the quanta is in a state being the superposition of quantum states with energies and pulses multiple of the "seed" energy and pulse. The virtual quanta is created (or destroyed) in of such states. The probability of creating a quanta in any state is the inverse of the relativistic factor, and the average number of the quanta making up the "fur coat" with a "seed" is equal to this particular factor. The kinetic energy and the relativistic addition to the particle pulse are interpreted as the average magnitude of the energy and the pulse in the system of the virtual quanta that constitute the particle "fur coat".

Abstract:The maximum particle kinetic energy that can be extracted from an initial six-dimensional phase space distribution motivates the concept of free or available energy. The free energy depends on the allowed operations that can be performed. A key concept underlying the theoretical treatment of plasmas is the Gardner free energy, where the exchange of the contents of equal phase volumes is allowed. A second free energy concept is the diffusive free energy, in which the contents of volumes are instead averaged. For any finite discretization of phase space, the diffusive free energy is known to be less than the Gardner free energy. However, despite the apparent fundamental differences between these free energies, it is demonstrated here that the Gardner free energy may be recovered from the continuous limit of the diffusive free energy, leading to the surprise that macroscopic phase-space conservation can be achieved by ostensibly entropy-producing microscopic operations.

Abstract:The main purpose of this article is to provide a guide to theorems on global properties of solutions to the Einstein--Vlasov system. This system couples Einstein's equations to a kinetic matter model. Kinetic theory has been an important field of research during several decades in which the main focus has been on non-relativistic and special relativistic physics, i.e., to model the dynamics of neutral gases, plasmas, and Newtonian self-gravitating systems. In 1990, Rendall and Rein initiated a mathematical study of the Einstein--Vlasov system. Since then many theorems on global properties of solutions to this system have been established.
