Abstract:This paper is a study of Proposition IX of Book I of Newton's Principia, the problem of determining the centripetal force for an equiangular spiral. In Newton's main proof of this proposition there is an error concerning his reason for the figure SPRQT being “given in kind,” and a very interesting technique of varying things in the neighborhood of a limit. This main proof utilized Newton's formula for the limit of SP2QT2QR given in Corollary I to Proposition VI of the Principia. Newton also gave an alternate proof which utilized his formula for SY2PV given in Corollary III to Proposition VI. The “given” of Proposition IX was “a spiral PQS, cutting all the radii SP, SQ, &c., in a given angle.” Both the main proof and the alternate proof implicitly depend on the property of the equiangular spiral that the radius of curvature at any point is proportional to the pole distance SP. We here offer a new proof of Newton's proposition which does not depend on this implicit assumption.

An Elementary Proof of a Remarkable Relation Between the Squircle and Lemniscate

Abstract:It is well known that there is a somewhat mysterious relation between the area of the quartic Fermat curve $x^4+y^4=1$, aka squircle, and the arc length of the lemniscate $(x^2+y^2)^2=x^2-y^2$. The standardproof of this fact uses relations between elliptic integrals and the gamma function. In this article we generalize this result to relate areas of sectors of the squircle to arc lengths of segments of the lemniscate. We provide a geometric interpretation of this relation and an elementary proof of the relation, which only uses basic integral calculus.

Abstract:Abstract Solving equations in integers is an important part of the number theory [29]. In many cases it can be conducted by the factorization of equation’s elements, such as the Newton’s binomial. The article introduces several simple formulas, which may facilitate this process. Some of them are taken from relevant books [28], [14]. In the second section of the article, Fermat’s Little Theorem is proved in a classical way, on the basis of divisibility of Newton’s binomial. Although slightly redundant in its content (another proof of the theorem has earlier been included in [12]), the article provides a good example, how the application of registrations could shorten the length of Mizar proofs [9], [17].

Abstract:Prompted by an observation about the integral of exponential functions of the form $f(x)=\lambda\mathrm{e}^{\alpha x}$, we investigate the possibility to exactly integrate families of functions generated from a given function by scaling or by affine transformations of the argument using nonlinear generalizations of quadrature formulae. The main result of this paper is that such formulae can be explicitly constructed for a wide class of functions, and have the same accuracy as Newton-Cotes formulae based on the same nodes. We also show how Newton-Cotes formulae emerge as the linear case of our general formalism, and demonstrate the usefulness of the nonlinear formulae in the context of the Padé-Laplace method of exponential analysis.

Abstract:We give a dynamical proof of a result of Masser and Zannier [MZ2, MZ3] about torsion points on the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Our methods also treat points of small height. A key ingredient is the arithmetic equidistribution theorem on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Baker-Rumely, Chambert-Loir, and Favre-Rivera-Letelier. Torsion points on the elliptic curve coincide with preperiodic points for the degree-4 Lattes family of rational functions. Our main new results concern properties of the bifurcation measures for this Lattes family associated to marked points.

The quasi-paraorthogonal polynomials associated with these measures will play a fundamental role in the case of quadrature rules with one node (Szegő-Radau) or two nodes (Szegő-Lobatto) preselected at the end points of the arc.

Abstract:Translated from the Latin original "Novae demonstrationes circa resolutionem numerorum in quadrata" (1774). E445 in the Enestrom index. See Chapter III, section XI of Weil's "Number theory: an approach through history". Also, a very clear proof of the four squares theorem based on Euler's is Theorem 370 in Hardy and Wright, "An introduction to the theory of numbers", fifth ed. It uses Theorem 87 in Hardy and Wright, but otherwise does not assume anything else from their book. I translated most of the paper and checked those details a few months ago, but only finished last few parts now. If anything isn't clear please email me.

Abstract:In a recent article Herman Erlichson called attention to a flaw in Newton's proof of Proposition IX of Book I of the Principia. How did Newton fall into this error? A valid proof was near to hand, by an easy addition to Lemma III of Book II; but evidently Newton wished to attempt a different line of argument. The figure for Proposition IX in the first two editions of the Principia differs from that in the third edition, and does not involve the quadrilateral “given in kind” that Erlichson rightly objects to. But the basic error remains: the assumption without proof of the similarity of all segments of the spiral with the same central angle. By 1671 Newton had proved this assumption by an integration, establishing the logarithmic property of the equiangular spiral. In Proposition IX it would thus appear that he either simply presented as known an analytic result now familiar to himself, or hoped that his readers would consider it as valid for infinitesimal segments.

Abstract:In 1888, Hilbert proved that every nonnegative quartic form $f=f(x,y,z)$ with real coefficients is a sum of three squares of quadratic forms. His proof was ahead of its time and used advanced methods from topology and algebraic geometry. In a 2012 paper we presented a new approach that used only elementary techniques. In this note we add some further simplifications to this proof.

Abstract:In a recent paper Vinay, Shweta, and Harshitha use Ramanujan's theta functions to prove several trigonometric equalities. Elementary proofs for some of these equalities were given by the author and Zeilberger, then for all but one by Berndt, Kim, and Zaharescu. The remaining equality was proved in the same paper of Berndt, Kim, and Zaharescu in a non-totally elementary way, in that it uses a result of Gauss in cyclotomy: here we give an elementary proof of the same equality. Also we show how to use automated tools to discover and prove some generalizations.

Abstract:We construct several sequences of asymptotically optimal definite quadrature formulae of fourth order and evaluate their error constants. Besides the asymptotical optimality, an advantage of our quadrature formulae is the explicit form of their weights and nodes. For the remainders of our quadrature formulae monotonicity properties are established when the integrand is a 4-convex function, and a-posteriori error estimates are proven.
