Abstract:A quick way of arriving at the Dirac quantization condition between electric and magnetic charges is to require that the electromagnetic field angular momentum of a Thomson dipole (a magnetic monopole and an electric charge) equal some integer multiple of the fundamental unit of quantum mechanical angular momentum, ℏ/2. Applying this same type of argument to the electromagnetic field angular momentum carried by a magnetic dipole–electric charge system leads to an infinite number of different quantization conditions, and an apparent incompatibility between quantum mechanics and the dipole–charge system. However, a more careful analysis shows that the particle plus field angular momentum of this system does satisfy the standard angular momentum commutation relationships and is therefore a good quantum mechanical angular momentum. This emphasizes that caution must be taken when applying such semiclassical quantization arguments. Finally, a possible connection between this dipole–charge field angular momentum and the nucleon spin crisis is given.

Abstract:It is shown that when the gauge-invariant Bohr-Rosenfeld commutators of the free electromagnetic field are applied to the expressions for the linear and angular momentum of the electromagnetic field interpreted as operators then, in the absence of electric and magnetic charge densities, these operators satisfy the canonical commutation relations for momentum and angular momentum. This confirms their validity as operators that can be used in quantum mechanical calculations of angular momentum.

Abstract:When an electromagnetic field is quantized within a box of side L with periodic boundary conditions, the total angular momentum J→^ is not strictly a constant of the motion even when L→∞. As a result, the conditions for isotropy of such a field involve subtle differences from the usual conditions. The same constraints apply to the orbital part of J→^, but not to the spin part. The expectation value of J→^ for any monochromatic plane wave is shown to vanish. Commutation relations are derived between J→^ and an arbitrary field vector, which show explicitly how J→^ generates rotation.

Abstract:We calculate the orbital angular momentum of the `quark' in the scalar diquark model as well as that of the electron in QED (to order $\alpha$). We compare the orbital angular momentum obtained from the Jaffe-Manohar decomposition to that obtained from the Ji relation and estimate the importance of the vector potential in the definition of orbital angular momentum.

Abstract:We investigate the angular momentum decomposition with a quantum electrodynamics example to clarify the proton spin decomposition debates. We adopt the light-front formalism where the parton model is well defined. We prove that the sum of fermion and boson angular momenta is equal to half the sum of the two gravitational form factors $A(0)$ and $B(0)$, as is well known. However, the suggestion to make a separation of the above relation into the fermion and boson pieces, as a way to measure the orbital angular momentum of fermions or bosons, respectively, is not justified from our explicit calculation.

Abstract:The Hubbard model for electrons with orbital degeneracy is shown to have an underlying SU_d(4) symmetry of spin-orbital double. A hidden charge SU_c(4) symmetry is exposed and an extended Lieb-Mattis transformation which maps these two symmetries into each other is given. On the basis of elementary degenerate perturbative theory, it is shown that the system with strong repulsive coupling is equivalent to a SO(6) Heisenberg magnet at half-filling and a SU(4) one at quarter-filling. The band is half-filled at all temperature for $\mu=3U/2$. The features of ground state and low-lying excitations in one dimension are indicated according to exact solutions. Various possibilities of symmetry breaking are also given.

Abstract:The angular momentum of any quantum system should be {\it unambiguously} quantized. We show that such a quantization fails for a pure Dirac monopole due to a previously overlooked field angular momentum from the monopole-electric charge system coming from the magnetic field of the Dirac string and the electric field of the charge. Applying the point-splitting method to the monopole-charge system yields a total angular momentum which obeys the standard angular momentum algebra, but which is gauge {\it variant}. In contrast it is possible to properly quantize the angular momentum of a topological 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole plus charge. This implies that pure Dirac monopoles are not viable -- only 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles are theoretically consistent with angular momentum quantization and gauge invariance.

Abstract:Quantum states of a spin $1/2$ (a qubit) are parametrized by the space $CP^1 \sim S^2$, the Bloch sphere. A spin j (a 2j+1 -state system) for generic j is represented instead by a point of a larger space, $CP^{2j}$. Here we study the angular momentum/spin in the limit, $j \to \infty$. The state, $(J \cdot n) | j, n\rangle = j |j, n \rangle $, where $J$ is the angular momentum operator and $n$ stands for a generic unit vector in $R^3$, is found to behave as a classical angular momentum, $ j n $. We discuss this phenomenon, by analysing the Stern-Gerlach experiments, the angular-momentum composition rule, and the rotation matrix. This problem arose from the consideration of a macroscopic body under an inhomogeneous magnetic field. Our observations help to explain how classical mechanics (with unique particle trajectories) emerges naturally from quantum mechanics in this context, and at the same time, make the widespread idea that large spins somehow become classical, a more precise one.

Abstract:The object of this paper is to discuss the physical interpretation of quantum behaviour of Schrodinger electron (SchEl) and bring to light on the cause for the Heisenberg convenient operator way of its describing, using the nonrelativistic quantum mechanics laws and its mathematical results. We describe the forced stochastically diverse circular oscillation motion, created by force of the electrical interaction of the SchEl's elementary electric charge with the electric intensity of the resultant quantum electromagnetic field of the existing StchVrtPhtns, as a solution of Abraham-Lorentz equation. By dint of this equation we obtain that the smooth thin line of a classical macro particle is rapidly broken of many short and disorderly orientated lines, owing the continuous dispersion of the quantum micro particle (QntMicrPrt) on the StchVrtPhtns. Between two successive scattering the centers of diverse circular oscillations with stochastically various radii are moving along this short disordered line. These circular oscillations lie within the flats, perpendicular to same disordered short line, along which are moving its centers. In a result of same forced circular oscillation motion the smooth thin line of the LrEl is roughly spread and turned out into some cylindrically wide path of the SchEl. Hence the dispersions of different dynamical parameters, determining the state of the SchEl, which are results of its continuously interaction with the resultant quantum electromagnetic field of the StchVrtPhtns. The absence of the smooth thin line trajectory at the circular oscilation moving of the QntMicrPrt forces us to use the matrix elements (Fourier components) of its roughly spread wide cylindrical path for its description.

Abstract:The electric field of an orbiting charge or electron observed in the rotating frame takes on a circular trajectory with a maximum radius of R=cω′\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$R=\frac{c}{\omega '}$$\end{document}. The resultant extended electromagnetic structure is used to derive the spin–orbit energy of the orbiting electron. These results suggest that the quantised fine structure constant and by extension Planck’s constant, are a natural extension of classical electromagnetism and conservation of energy in a rotating frame.

Abstract:The solution of Dirac's equation for the hydrogen atom according to relativistic wave mechanics yields for each state a vectorial amplitude function with four components, two large and two small. Each such component has its characteristic surface of constant amplitude, of which we plot several examples. For each state of the hydrogen atom there is both a density of electronic charge surrounding the atomic nucleus and an electronic current circulating about the polar axis; the latter generates a magnetic dipolar moment that agrees precisely with experiment.

Abstract:The paper analyzes time propagation of Dirac observables - using Heisenberg representation - in the light of various pseudodifferential operator algebras (cf. [Co3], [Co15], [Co16]). Our theory gives (i) a mechanical angular momentum (the spin), but also (ii) another real 3-vector, travelling with the particle, with magnetic properties (its motion guided by the magnetic field around it, but not in the proper relativistic way). The above is discussed for potentials vanishing at infinity. But we also look at a Dirac particle in the field of a plane polarized X-ray wave, trying to analyze the Compton effect. The propagations of energy and momentum (in the X-ray's direction) are coupled - they allow a joint asymptotic expansion with terms representing change of energy by $nh\nu$ and momentum by $nh\nu/c$, with n=0,1,2, ..., valid for large frequencies, i.e., large momentum coordinates. Possible interpretation: A collision of the electron-positron with 0, 1, 2, ... n Photons of energy $h\nu$, affecting a change of energy-momentum. Note, this does not require QFT.

Abstract:A simple approach for understanding the quantum nature of angular momentum and its reduction to the classical limit is presented based on Schwinger's coupled-boson representation. This approach leads to a straightforward explanation of why the square of the angular momentum in quantum mechanics is given by j(j+1) instead of just j^2, where j is the angular momentum quantum number.

Abstract:A neo-classical relativistic mechanics theory is presented where the spin of an electron is a natural part of its space-time path as a point particle. The fourth-order equation of motion corresponds to the same Lagrangian function in proper time as in special relativity except for an additional spin energy term. The total motion can be decomposed into a sum of a local spin motion about a point and a global motion of this point, called the spin center. The global motion is sub-luminal and obeys Newton's second law in proper time, the time for a clock fixed at the spin center, while the total motion occurs at the speed of light c, consistent with the eigenvalues of Dirac's velocity operators having magnitude c. The local spin motion corresponds to Schrödinger's zitterbewegung and is a perpetual motion, which for a free electron has a circular path in the spin-center frame. In an electro-magnetic field, this spin motion generates magnetic and electric dipole energies through the Lorentz force on the electron's point charge. The corresponding electric dipole energy is consistent with the spin-orbit coupling term in the corrected Pauli non-relativistic Hamiltonian but the magnetic dipole energy is one half of that in Dirac's theory. By defining a spin tensor as the angular momentum of the electron's total motion about its spin center, the fundamental equations of motion can be re-written in an identical form to those of the Barut-Zanghi electron theory. These equations of motion can then be expressed using operators applied to a state function of proper time satisfying a Dirac-Schrödinger spinor equation. The operators produce dynamic variables without any probability implications. For the free electron, the state function satisfies Dirac's relativistic wave equation when the Lorentz transformation is applied to express proper time in terms of an observer's space-time coordinates.

Abstract:Linac-ring analogues of the LHC and VLHC based standard type ep collider proposals are discussed. It is shown that sufficiently high luminosities can be obtained with TESLA-like linacs, whereas essential modifications are required for CLIC technology. The physics search potential of proposed ep colliders is demonstrated using pair production of heavy quarks as an example.

Abstract:By viewing the electron as a wavepacket in the positive energy spectrum of the Dirac equation, we are able to achieve a much clearer understanding of its behavior under weak electromagnetic fields. The intrinsic spin magnetic moment is found to be established from the self-rotation of the wavepacket. A non-canonical structure is also exhibited in the equations of motion due to non- Abelian geometric phases of the Dirac spinors. The wavepacket energy can be expressed simply in terms of the kinetic, electrostatic, and Zeeman terms only. This can be transformed into an effective quantum Hamiltonian by a novel scheme, and reproduces the Pauli Hamiltonian with all-order relativistic corrections.

Abstract:Supplementing the Heisenberg model with a Hubbard-commuting kinetic of electrons adds to its spectrum without interference. One consequence is the precise incorporation of canonical linear spin wave theory within the time-dependent Hartree-Fock framework, as pure localization emerges from itinerant dynamics. This embedding method generalizes to all spin-1/2 models and is expected to extend to multi-orbital systems. Away from half-filling, differential tuning of doublon and holon motion imparts asymmetry to ordering and fluctuations. This suggests that, in effective electronic theories, kinetic interaction couplings are as significant as underlying band parameters when modeling asymmetric phenomena near the Mott insulator.

Abstract:A single electromagnetic plane-wave propagating in free space possesses neither spin nor orbital angular momentum. Both types of angular momentum arise from interference between pairs of plane-waves having the same temporal frequency {\omega} but differing k-vectors k_1 and k_2. While it is fairly straightforward to evaluate a wavepacket's spin and orbital angular momenta in the (k,{\omega}) continuum by means of Fourier transformation, obtaining the same results by discretizing the (k,{\omega}) space, then attempting to approach the continuum limit via an infinite enlargement of the spatial volume under consideration, is fraught with danger.

Abstract:Maxwell's equations and the Dirac equation are the first-order differential relativistic wave equation for electromagnetic waves and electronic waves respectively. Hence, there is a notable similarity between these two wave equations, which has been widely researched since the Dirac equation was proposed. In this paper, we show that the Maxwell equations can be written in an exact form of the Dirac equation by representing the four Dirac operators with $8\times8$ matrices. Unlike the ordinary $4\times4$ Dirac equation, both spin--1/2 and spin--1 operators can be derived from the $8\times8$ Dirac equation, manifesting that the $8\times8$ Dirac equation is able to describe both electrons and photons. As a result of the restrictions that the electromagnetic wave is a transverse wave, the photon is a spin--1 particle. The four--current in the Maxwell equations and the mass in the electronic Dirac equation also force the electromagnetic field to transform differently to the electronic field. We use this $8\times8$ representation to find that the Zitterbewegung of the photon is actually the oscillatory part of the Poynting vector, often neglected upon time averaging.
