Abstract:Self-oscillating polymer gel has become a distinguished class of smart soft materials.Here we fabricated and demonstrated a self-oscillating structural gel network with the incorporation of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction.The structural polymer gel oscillates at a macroscopic level with remarkably faster kinetics compared to a normal gel of similar chemical compositions.The structural polymer gel also displays larger oscillating amplitude compared to the normal gel because of the increased diffusion of fluids surrounding the gel particles.This type of structural polymer gels can be harnessed to provide novel and feasible applications in a wide variety of fields, such as drug delivery, nanopatterning, chemical and biosensing, and photonic crystals.

Abstract:Biomacromolecules usually form complex superstructures in natural biotissues, such as different alignments of collagen fibres in articular cartilages, for multifunctionalities. Inspired by nature, there are efforts towards developing multiscale ordered structures in hydrogels (recognized as one of the best candidates of soft biotissues). However, creating complex superstructures in gels are hardly realized because of the absence of effective approaches to control the localized molecular orientation. Here we introduce a method to create various superstructures of rigid polyanions in polycationic hydrogels. The control of localized orientation of rigid molecules, which are sensitive to the internal stress field of the gel, is achieved by tuning the swelling mismatch between masked and unmasked regions of the photolithographic patterned gel. Furthermore, we develop a double network structure to toughen the hydrogels with programmed superstructures, which deform reversibly under large strain. This work presents a promising pathway to develop superstructures in hydrogels and should shed light on designing biomimetic materials with intricate molecular alignments.

Abstract:Different methods for creating Olympic gels are analyzed using computer simulations. First ideal reference samples are obtained from freely interpenetrating semi-dilute solutions and melts of cyclic polymers. The distribution of pairwise concatenations per cyclic molecule is given by a Poisson-distribution and can be used to describe the elastic structure of the gels. Several batches of linear chains decorated with different selectively binding groups at their ends are mixed in the "DNA Origami" technique and network formation is realized. While the formation of cyclic molecules follows mean field predictions below overlap of the precursor molecules, an enhanced ring formation above overlap is found that is not explained by mean field arguments. The "progressive construction" method allows to create Olympic gels with a single reaction step from a concentrated mixture of large compressed rings with a low weight fraction short chains that are below overlap concentration. This method, however, is limited by the difficulty to obtain a sufficiently high degree of polymerization of the large rings.
Structuring polymer gels via catalytic reactions

Abstract:We use computer simulations to investigate how a catalytic reaction in a polymer sol can induce the formation of a polymer gel. To this aim we consider a solution of homopolymers in which freely-diffusing catalysts convert the originally repulsive A monomers into attractive B ones. We find that at low temperatures this reaction transforms the polymer solution into a physical gel that has a remarkably regular mesostructure in the form of a cluster phase, absent in the usual homopolymer gels obtained by a quench in temperature. We investigate how this microstructuring depends on catalyst concentration, temperature, and polymer density and show that the dynamics for its formation can be understood in a semi-quantitative manner using the interaction potentials between the particles as input. The structuring of the copolymers and the AB sequences resulting from the reactions can be discussed in the context of the phase behaviour of correlated random copolymers. The location of the spinodal line as found in our simulations is consistent with analytical predictions. Finally, we show that the observed structuring depends not only on the chemical distribution of the A and B monomers but also on the mode of formation of this distribution.

Influence of Formation Conditions on Spatial Inhomogeneities in Poly(<i>N</i>-isopropylacrylamide) Hydrogels

Abstract:Static light scattering measurements performed on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels having a polymer volume fraction around 0.05-0.09 reveal that spatial inhomogeneities grow stronger with rising preparation temperature of the gels, increasing cross-linker concentration, and decreasing monomer concentration. Quantitative analysis of the angular dependence of the excess scattering intensity via the Debye-Bueche method results in correlation lengths of several 10 nm. Relative mean-square concentration fluctuations on this length scale are around 15-35% depending on preparation conditions. The cross-linking efficiency as determined by shear modulus measurements declines when the degree of inhomogeneity is enhanced. Comparison of the experimental results with Panyukov-Rabin (PR) theory indicates that the general trends are well predicted and that thermal concentration fluctuations can be calculated almost quantitatively. However, the theory significantly underestimates the static spatial concentration fluctuations. This discrepancy may be a consequence of preparing the gels by cross-linking polymerization, which leads to much stronger heterogeneity than presumed in PR theory.

Abstract:Topological gels possess structures that are cross-linked only via physical constraints; ideally, no attractive intermolecular interactions act between their components, which yields interesting physical properties. However, most reported previous topological gels were synthesized based on supramolecular interlocked structures such as polyrotaxane, for which attractive intermolecular interactions are essential. Here, we synthesize a water-soluble "molecular net" (MN) with a large molecular weight and three-dimensional network structure using poly(ethylene glycol). When a water-soluble monomer (N-isopropylacrylamide) is polymerized in the presence of the MNs, the extending polymer chains penetrates the MNs to form an ideal topological MN gel with no specific attractive interactions between its components. The MN gels show unique physical properties as well a significantly high degree of swelling and high extensibility due to slipping of the physical cross-linking. We postulate this method to yield a new paradigm in gel science with unprecedented physical properties.

Gelation as condensation frustrated by hydrodynamics and mechanical isostaticity

Abstract:Colloidal gels have unique mechanical and transport properties that stem from their bicontinous nature, in which a colloidal network is intertwined with a viscous solvent, and have found numerous applications in foods, cosmetics, construction materials, and for medical applications, such as cartilage replacements. So far, our understanding of the process of colloidal gelation is limited to long-time dynamical effects, where gelation is viewed as a phase separation process interrupted by the glass transition. However, this picture neglects two important effects: the influence of hydrodynamic interactions, and the emergence of mechanical stability. With confocal microscopy experiments, here we successfully follow the entire process of gelation with a single-particle resolution, yielding time-resolved measures of internal stress and viscoelasticity from the very beginning of the aggregation process. First, we demonstrate that the incompressible nature of a liquid component constrains the initial stage of phase separation, assisting the formation of a percolated network. Then we show that this network is not mechanically stable and undergoes rearrangements driven by self-generated internal stress. Finally, we show that mechanical metastability is reached only after percolation of locally isostatic environments, proving isostaticity a necessary condition for the stability and load bearing ability of gels rather than the glass transition. Our work reveals the crucial roles of momentum conservation in gelation in addition to the conventional purely out-of-equilibrium thermodynamic picture.

Abstract:Depending on how they form their linkings, biopolymer gelatin gels are commonly classified as physical, chemical, or hybrid; in gelatin hybrid gels, the physical and chemical crosslinking mechanisms run simultaneously. Gels' viscoelastic behavior following different gelation processes was determined around the gel point. Their gel fractal dimensions were obtained using the BST-scaling model from large amplitude oscillatory shear results. Hybrid gels' fractal dimension is between 1.46 and 1.60, where the value depends on the dominant crosslinking process. The main features of the Lissajous-Bowditch curves were determined for maturated gels that follow different gelation processes, and it is possible to observe the dominant gelation mechanism. The gelation kinetics process is followed by measuring the mean squared displacement (MSD) of microspheres embedded in gelatin solutions using diffusion wave spectroscopy, which in turn allows evaluating G'(ω) and G"(ω), the persistence length, and the mesh size as a function of time along the gelation process. The MSD, as a function of the elapsed time from the starting gelation process, follows a behavior that depends on the gelation processes. As time elapses after gelation starts, the persistence length of the unstructured, non-bonded flexible polymer sections decreases due to the formation of bonds. In the hybrid case, it is not a mixture of both processes; they are not independent when running simultaneously. The time evolution of the gel network's mesh size roughly follows an exponential decay.

Abstract:The effects of polymerization concentrations and elementary reaction rates on the network structure and mechanical properties of gels synthesized by free radical copolymerization of monomers and cross-linkers are studied by a coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation. The shear modulus, the number of elastically effective chains, and the number of trapped entanglements are calculated with varying the concentrations. The results reveal that the experimentally reported high cross-linking efficiency of the gels formed at high monomer concentrations and low cross-linker concentrations is due to the large number of trapped entanglements. The molecular mechanisms of changes in the network structure due to changes in the concentrations are elucidated by analyzing the detailed structure of network strands connecting adjacent cross-linking points. The results with systematically varying the elementary reaction rates indicate that the decrease in the propagation rate suppresses the formation of cyclic structures and reduces the influence of the trapped entanglements, i.e. , improves the structural uniformity of the gels.

Abstract:The development of structurally controlled techniques inspired by the structural formation of living systems is of great importance for the fabrication of next-generation functional soft materials using environmentally friendly processes. This study aimed to investigate the formation mechanism of anisotropic structures of the gelatin network in a hydrogel through self-assembly on oriented templates. The effects of the oriented template having a uniaxially oriented surface on the anisotropic structure of the gelatin network were influenced by the structure at different scales: molecular (the secondary structure as the microstructure on the gelatin molecule) and molecular-assembled (the morphology of the gelatin network) scales. The mechanical properties and swelling behavior of the prepared gelatin hydrogels were characterized based on the anisotropic gelatin networks. The formation of an anisotropic gelatin network by self-assembly on the oriented template was presumably achieved by a two-step process due to the following two types of structural control factors: (1) the strength of the interaction between the template and gelatin molecules, and (2) the phase separation between the gelatin and water molecules induced during the hydrogelation process. The first process involves the formation of a thin molecular layer by the interaction between the template and gelatin molecules. The second process involves phase separation between the gelatin and water molecules during the cooling process of hydrogelation. These structurally controlled techniques for the formation of polymer networks inspired by biomineralization have two application prospects, which are the construction of biological tissue-like soft materials with complex hierarchical and anisotropic network structures through self-assembly processes, and expression of biological tissue-like functions.

Abstract:Thermosensitive gel is synthesized through controlled/“living” free radical copolymerization of styrene and DVB mediated by an alkoxyamine inimer, 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-(1′-phenylethoxy)-4-(4′-vinylbenzyloxy)-piperidine (V-ET). The inimer plays the role of both incorporating “T-shaped” inter-chain linkages and mediating the polymerization. First order kinetics is observed for crosslinking polymerizations before gel point, indicating a constant concentration of propagating radicals. Monomer conversion at the gel point depends on the feed ratio of DVB to V-ET. Higher amount of V-ET results in later gel point due to smaller molecular weight of the primary chains that depends inversely on the concentration of nitroxide. The resulting gel contains permanent and labile crosslinking points formed by DVB units and alkoxyamine moieties, respectively. Therefore, the gels exhibit gel–sol transition within a narrow temperature range. The gel properties, such as the swelling ratio and gel–sol transition temperature, can be controlled by changing the feed ratio of DVB to V-ET. The microenvironments in different gels, or at different temperatures, are investigated by ESR spectroscopy.

Abstract:A network polymer at its gel point is in a critical state between liquid and solid. Linear viscoelasticity reduces to a simple behavior which is described by the gel equation for the stress (J. Rheol., 30, 367 (1986) and 31, 683 (1987)):$$ \tau (\rm{t}) = \int_{ - \infty }^{\rm{t}} {{\rm{S}}\quad {{({\rm{t}} - {\rm{t'}})}^{ - {\rm{n}}}}} \dot{\gamma} ({\rm{t'}}){\rm{dt}}$$in which the strain history is defined by the rate of deformation tensor$$ \dot{\gamma} ({\rm{t'}})$$. Molecular parameters determine the gel strength, S, and the relaxation exponent, n. The above power law relaxation behavior seems to be a universal property at the gel point. It has been found with a large variety of chemically or physically crosslinking polymers, i.e. with all crosslinking polymers which we studied above the glass transition temperature. Initially, we seemed to find a universal relaxation exponent of 0.5 for all gels as it might be expected for a critical state. However, measured values between 0.15 and 0.8 indicate that the relaxation exponent may cover the entire range between 0 and 1. The front factor S depends on the magnitude of the relaxation exponent, and for classes of network polymers it is found to follow the relation S=Goλon, where Go and λo are characteristic properties which are constant within each class of network polymers (to appear in Macromolecules, 1990). Go is of the order of the plateau modulus of the network and λo is believed to be the relaxation time of a network strand. The universality of the power law relaxation behavior of polymers at the gel point allows a most accurate determination of the instant of gelation (Polym. Eng. Sci., 27,1698 (1987)). The gel point is reached when the complex rheological behavior reduces to power law relaxation in the terminal frequency range (fractal behavior, mechanical selfsimilarity). The simple technique of Fourier Transform Mechanical Spectroscopy (J. Non-Newt. Fluid Mech., 27, 17 (1988)) not only allows the direct determination of the gel point. It also allows, by extrapolation, to predict the distance from the gel point in a sol. Recent advances of the technique and a set of applications will be given. When replacing the rate of deformation tensor in the gel equation with a suitable strain measure, it can predict the stress in critical gels up to about 2 strain units (for PDMS). Beyond this, a large strain will irreversibly rupture the molecular network.

Abstract:The structural and mechanical properties of gels formed from biopolymers are discussed both in terms of the techniques used to characterise these systems, and in terms of the systems themselves. The techniques included are spectroscopic, chiroptical and scattering methods, optical and electron microscopy, thermodynamic and kinetic methods and rheological characterisation. The systems considered are presented in order of increasing complexity of secondary, tertiary and quaternary structure, starting with gels which arise from essentially ‘disordered’ biopolymers via formation of ‘quasicrystalline’ junction zones (e.g. gelatin, carrageenans, agarose, alginates etc.), and extending to networks derived from globular and rod-like species (fibrin, globular proteins, caseins, myosin) by a variety of crosslinking mechanisms. Throughout the text, efforts are made to pursue the link (both from experiment and from theory) between the structural methods and mechanical measurements. As far as we are aware this is the first major Review of this area since that of J. D. Ferry in 1948 — The interest shown by polymer physicists in more complex biochemical systems, and the multi-disciplinary approaches now being applied in this area, make the format adopted here, in our opinion, the most logical and appropriate.

Abstract:We previously discovered that isotropic monomer solution shows birefringence due to its anisotropic structure after gelation in the presence of a small amount of rod-like polyelectrolyte. Here, we focus on what mechanism is responsible for the formation of anisotropic structure during gelation. Various optical measurements are performed to elucidate the structure change during gelation. The structure before and during gelation is in situ observed by scanning microscopic light scattering, confocal laser scanning microscope, polarizing optical microscope and depolarizing small angle light scattering. It is found that the existence of a large-size structure in monomer solution with the rod-like polyelectrolyte is essentially important to induce birefringence during gelation. The possible mechanism of the anisotropic structure formation during gelation seeded by a rod-like polyelectrolyte is proposed based on the results of these observations.
Structure and mechanical properties of anisotropic agar gels obtained via unidirectional freezing

Abstract:The controllable formation of anisotropic gel structures is presently sought for the development of foods with novel textures. Here, we used unidirectional freezing to generate agar gels consisting of a honeycomb-like porous network of elongated and aligned pores. A custom-built Peltier system allowed for control of the freezing front velocity throughout the agar gels. A higher freezing velocity (10 µm/s) led to smaller pore sizes compared to the slower freezing velocity tested (2 µm/s). Texture analysis highlighted the significantly higher Young's modulus in the gels when compressed in the axial vs. radial direction - a direct consequence of the unidirectional freezing. The proton spin-spin relaxation time revealed greater water mobility in the unidirectionally frozen gel with larger pores. This study serves as the basis for the development of anisotropic hydrocolloid gels with a tunable microstructure and texture.
Well-defined gels prepared by radical addition-coupling polymerization

Abstract:A novel radical addition-coupling polymerization method is applied to prepare gels with controlled chain structure and length between branch points. Structure of the chains was varied between rigid or flexible ones by synthesizing different tribromide and dibromide monomers and reacting them with 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane (MNP) under catalysis of Cu/N,N,N ',N ",N "-pentamethyldiethylene-triamine. The carbon radical generated by single electron transfer from the bromides can be efficiently captured by MNP, forming nitroxide radical. The in situ formed nitroxide radical immediately undergoes cross-coupling reaction with another carbon radical, generating gel bridged with alkoxyaime moiety via step-growth mechanism. The tribromide and dibromide monomers were synthesized from different saturated and unsaturated compounds, or by bulk atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene using small bromide as initiator. The rigid gel has better controlled chains between branch points than the flexible ones. Selective dissociation of the ester group in the backbone of chains has been realized, which reserved the weak of NO-C. Flory-Huggins interaction parameter chi of the gels with fixed length between branch points were measured, which solved the difficulty that chi of insoluble polymer cannot be determined by common methods used for soluble polymers.
Morphology and mechanical properties of bicontinuous gels of agarose and gelatin and the effect of added lipid phase

Abstract:This study examines the structural properties of binary and tertiary mixtures made of the cold-setting biopolymers agarose and gelatin and a lipid phase with solid or liquid-like viscoelasticity. The working protocol included the techniques of small-deformation dynamic oscillation on shear, modulated differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy, and theoretical modeling that adapted ideas of relating the morphology to the elastic modulus of synthetic polyblends and block polymers. The experimental setting was designed to encourage extensive phase separation in the binary gel of agarose and gelatin whose mechanical properties were rationalized on the basis of a bicontinuous blending law. The presence of two continuous phases allowed the slower-gelling component (gelatin) to exhibit favorable relative affinity for the solvent with increasing concentrations of the protein in the system. This is an unexpected outcome that contradicts the central finding of a single value of the p factor observed in the distribution of solvent between the continuous matrix and discontinuous inclusions of deswelled binary gels reported earlier in the literature. The incorporation of a lipid phase of effectively zero elastic modulus or in excess of 10(8) Pa in the composite aqueous gel weakens or reinforces the matrix accordingly. The elastic moduli and morphology of the tertiary blend were related to changing the relative phase volumes of components using analytical expressions of isotropically dispersed soft or rigid filler particles in a polymeric matrix.
Behavior of colloidal gels made of thermoresponsive anisotropic nanoparticles

Abstract:Amongst colloidal gels, those designed by the assembly of anisotropic colloidal particles tend to form fibrillar gels and are attracting interest as artificial cell growth environments since they have a structure reminiscent of biological extracellular matrices. Their properties can be tuned by controlling the size, shape, and rigidity of the nanoparticles used during their formation. Herein, the relationship between the physical and mechanical properties of the nanocolloidal building blocks and the properties of the resulting gels is investigated. Thermoresponsive particles with different aspect ratios and controlled rigidity were prepared, and the gelation and the properties of the resulting gels were studied. The results show how the aspect ratio and rigidity of polymer colloids tune the properties of the gels. An increase in the aspect ratio of the nanocolloid used led to a sol–gel transition observed at lower particle concentration, but an increase in the rigidity of the nanocolloids delayed the sol–gel transition to higher concentration. However, at a constant concentration, increases in the anisotropy produced gels with higher modulus and lower yield strain. Similarly, an increase in rigidity of the colloids increased the modulus and reduced the yield strain of the resulting gels.

Role of organogel chemistry on rheology and microstructure of molecular gels rationalized by Hansen solubility parameters

Abstract:Using a perfume oil as a liquid phase, we study the gelling performance of a series of cyclic dipeptides as well as the gelled oils' rheological properties and microstructure. After identifying suitable gelators for perfume oil, this work explores the gels' microstructure, elasticity, and syneresis as a function of the chemical nature of the gelator. A correlation is found between the hydrogen-bonding Hansen solubility parameter and the plateau storage modulus of the gelled oils. For a specific non-polar liquid phase, the gels are more elastic when the hydrogen bonding is stronger. By increasing the gel's elasticity, e.g., by using gelators with stronger non-covalent interactions and forming more resilient networks under shear, the tendency for syneresis is decreased. Overall, this work showed that the Hansen parameter approach can be used for the design of organogels and to tune their material properties for specific applications.
