Abstract:This paper gives upper and lower bounds for the degree of the field of definition of a singular K3 surface, generalising a recent result by Shimada. We use work of Shioda-Mitani and Shioda-Inose and classical theory of complex multiplication.

Abstract:Let $E$ be a totally real number field of degree $d$ and let $m \geqslant 3$ be an integer. We show that if $md \leqslant 21$ then there exists an $(m-2)$-dimensional family of complex projective $K3$ surfaces with real multiplication by $E$. Analogous results are proved for CM number fields and also for all known higher-dimensional hyperkähler manifolds.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a K3 surface over a number field. We prove that $X$ has infinitely many specializations where its Picard rank jumps, hence extending our previous work with Shankar--Shankar--Tang to the case where $X$ might have potentially bad reduction. We prove a similar result for generically ordinary non-isotrivial families of K3 surfaces over curves over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$ which extends previous work of Maulik--Shankar--Tang. As a consequence, we give a new proof of the ordinary Hecke orbit conjecture for orthogonal and unitary Shimura varieties.

Abstract:We study isogeny relations between K3 surfaces and Kummer surfaces. Specifically, we prove a Torelli-type theorem for the existence of rational maps from K3 surfaces to Kummer surfaces, and a Kummer sandwich theorem for K3 surfaces with Shioda-Inose structure.

Abstract:We give a positive answer to a question of J. Doyle and J. Silverman about fields of definition of dynamical systems on $\mathbb{P}^{n}$. We prove that, for fixed $n$, there exists a constant $C_{n}$ such that every dynamical system $\mathbb{P}^{n}\to\mathbb{P}^{n}$ is defined over an extension of degree $\le C_{n}$ of the field of moduli. More generally, the same bound works for any kind of "algebraic structure" defined over $\mathbb{P}^{n}$, such as embedded curves, hypersurfaces, algebraic cycles. As a consequence we prove that, if $x\in X(k)$ is a rational point of an $n$-dimensional variety with quotient singularities, there exists a field extension $k'/k$ of degree $\le C_{n-1}$ such that $x$ lifts to a $k'$-rational point of any resolution of singularities.

Moduli spaces of sheaves on Fano threefolds and K3 surfaces of genus 9

Abstract:A complex smooth prime Fano threefold $X$ of genus $9$ is related via projective duality to a quartic plane curve $\Gamma$. We use this setup to study the restriction of rank $2$ stable sheaves with prescribed Chern classes on $X$ to an anticanonical $K3$ surface $S\subset X$. Varying the threefold $X$ containing $S$ gives a rational Lagrangian fibration $$\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7) \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^3$$ with generic fibre birational to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_X(2,1,7)$ of sheaves on $X$. Moreover, we prove that this rational fibration extends to an actual fibration on a birational model $\mathcal{M}$ of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$. In a last part, we use Bridgeland stability conditions to exhibit all $K$-trivial smooth birational models of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$, which consist in itself and $\mathcal{M}$. We prove that these models are related by a flop, and we describe the positive, movable and nef cones of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$.

Abstract:In this paper we study the field of definition of abelian subvarieties $B\subset A_{\overline{K}}$ for an abelian variety $A$ over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$. We show that, provided that no isotypic component of $A_{\overline{K}}$ is simple, there are infinitely many abelian subvarieties of $A_{\overline{K}}$ with field of definition $K_A$, the field of definition of the endomorphisms of $A_{\overline{K}}$. This result combined with earlier work of Rémond gives an explicit maximum for the minimal degree of a field extension over which an abelian subvariety of $A_{\overline{K}}$ is defined with varying $A$ of fixed dimension and $K$ of characteristic $0$.

Abstract:Let $k$ be any field. Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}_k^N$ be a degree $d \geq 2$ hypersurface. Under some conditions, we prove that if $X(K) \neq \emptyset$ for some extension $K/k$ with $n:=[K:k] \geq 2$ and $\gcd(n,d)=1$, then $X(L) \neq \emptyset$ for some extension $L/k$ with $\gcd([L:k], d)=1$, $n \nmid [L:k]$, and $[L:k] \leq nd-n-d$. Moreover, if a $K$-solution is known explicitly, then we can compute $L/k$ explicitly as well. As an application, we improve upon a result by Coray on smooth cubic surfaces $X \subset \mathbb{P}^3_k$ by showing that if $X(K) \neq \emptyset$ for some extension $K/k$ with $\gcd([K:k], 3)=1$, then $X(L) \neq \emptyset$ for some $L/k$ with $[L:k] \in \{1, 10\}$.

The polarized degree of irrationality of $K3$ surfaces

Abstract:Given a polarized variety $(X,L)$ we use an elementary observation to produce projections of low degree $ X\subset \mathbb{P}(H^0(L^\vee)) \dashrightarrow \mathbb P ^r $ via vector bundles. For surfaces this observation can be used to show that maps of the degree at most $d$ move in families. In the case of polarized $K3$ surfaces we study projections of the lowest possible degree up to genus $6$ and we give a new upper bound for higher genera. As a different application of our construction we exhibit new rational maps of low degree for some hyper-Kähler varieties, abelian varieties and Gushel-Mukai threefolds.

Local and local-to-global Principles for zero-cycles on geometrically Kummer $K3$ surfaces

Abstract:Let $X$ be a $K3$ surface over a $p$-adic field $k$ such that for some abelian surface $A$ isogenous to a product of two elliptic curves, there is an isomorphism over the algebraic closure of $k$ between $X$ and the Kummer surface associated to $A$. Under some assumptions on the reduction types of the elliptic curve factors of $A$, we prove that the Chow group $A_0(X)$ of zero-cycles of degree $0$ on $X$ is the direct sum of a divisible group and a finite group. This proves a conjecture of Raskind and Spiess and of Colliot-Thélène and it is the first instance for $K3$ surfaces when this conjecture is proved in full. This class of $K3$'s includes, among others, the diagonal quartic surfaces. In the case of good ordinary reduction we describe many cases when the finite summand of $A_0(X)$ can be completely determined.

Abstract:We discuss properties of the Seifert form for simple $K3$ singularities, and of the Picard lattices of families of weighted $K3$ surfaces. We study a collection $\mathcal{M}_{(\rho,\,\delta)}$ of $K3$ surfaces polarized by their Picard lattices that are in the set $\mathcal{L}_{(\rho,\,\delta)}$ of certain lattices. We also report a numerical formula that relates the Seifert form for the singularities and the Picard lattice of the family.

Abstract:We compute the transcendental lattices of the singular K3 surfaces belonging to three pencils of K3 surfaces, namely the Apéry-Fermi pencil with transcendental lattice $U\oplus \langle 12 \rangle$, the Verrill's pencil with transcendental lattice $U \oplus \langle 6 \rangle$ and another pencil linked to Verrill's pencil with transcendental lattice $U \oplus \langle 24 \rangle$. Many corollaries are deduced. For example, some singular K3 surfaces belong to different pencils or are Kummer surfaces of K3 surfaces of another pencil.

Abstract:We give a vanishing and classification result for holomorphic differential forms on smooth projective models of the moduli spaces of pointed K3 surfaces. Abstract:Let X be a complex algebraic K3 surface of degree 2 d and with Picard number . Assume that X admits two commuting involutions: one holomorphic and one anti-holomorphic. Abstract:It is a classical fact going back to F. Klein that an elliptic curve $E$ over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ is defined by a homogeneous polynomial in $3$ variables with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}(j_{E})$, where $j_{E}$ is the $j$-invariant of $E$, and $\mathbb{Q}(j_{E})$ is the field of moduli of $E$. The general definition of field of moduli goes back to T. Matsusaka and G. Shimura. With few exceptions, it coincides with the intersection of the fields where the curve is defined. We prove that every smooth plane curve of degree prime with $6$ is defined by a homogeneous polynomial with coefficients in the field of moduli. Furthermore, we show that most plane curves in arbitrary degree, and more generally most algebraic cycles in $\mathbb{P}^{2}$ with finite automorphism group, descend to a Brauer-Severi surface over the field of moduli.

Abstract:Given a general polarized $K3$ surface $S\subset \mathbb P^g$ of genus $g\le 14$, we study projections $S\hookrightarrow \mathbb P^g\dashrightarrow \mathbb P^2$ of minimal degree and their variational structure. In particular, we prove that the degree of irrationality of all such surfaces is at most $4$, and that for $g=7,8,9,11$ there are no rational maps $S\dashrightarrow \mathbb P^2$ of degree $3$ induced by the primitive linear system. Our methods combine vector bundle techniques à la Lazarsfeld with derived category tools, and also make use of the rich theory of singular curves on $K3$ surfaces.

Abstract:Freiman's $3k-4$ Theorem states that if a subset $A$ of $k$ integers has a Minkowski sum $A+A$ of size at most $3k-4$, then it must be contained in a short arithmetic progression. We prove a function field analogue that is also a generalisation: it states that if $K$ is a perfect field and if $S\supset K$ is a vector space of dimension $k$ inside an extension $F/K$ in which~$K$ is algebraically closed, and if the $K$-vector space generated by all products of pairs of elements of $S$ has dimension at most $3k-4$, then $K(S)$ is a function field of small genus, and $S$ is of small codimension inside a Riemann-Roch space of $K(S)$.
