Abstract:We study complex algebraic K3 surfaces of Picard ranks 11, 12, and 13 of finite automorphism group that admit a Jacobian elliptic fibration with a section of order two. We prove that the K3 surfaces admit a birational model isomorphic to a projective quartic hypersurface and construct geometrically the frames of all supported Jacobian elliptic fibrations. We determine the dual graphs of all smooth rational curves for these K3 surfaces, the polarizing divisors, and the embedding of the reducible fibers in each frame into the corresponding dual graph.

Explicit $7$-torsion in the Tate-Shafarevich groups of genus $2$ Jacobians

Abstract:We describe an algorithm which, on input a genus $2$ curve $C/\mathbb{Q}$ whose Jacobian $J/\mathbb{Q}$ has real multiplication by a quadratic order in which $7$ splits, outputs twists of the Klein quartic curve parametrising elliptic curves whose mod $7$ Galois representations are isomorphic to a sub-representation of the mod $7$ Galois representation attached to $J/\mathbb{Q}$. Applying this algorithm to genus $2$ curves of small conductor in families of Bending and Elkies--Kumar we exhibit a number of genus $2$ Jacobians whose Tate--Shafarevich groups (unconditionally) contain a non-trivial element of order $7$ which is visible in an abelian three-fold.

Mukai's program for non-primitive curves on K3 surfaces

Abstract: Mukai's program seeks to recover a K3 surface $X$ from any curve $C$ on it by exhibiting it as a Fourier-Mukai partner to a Brill-Noether locus of vector bundles on the curve. In the case $X$ has Picard number one and the curve $C\in |H|$ is primitive, this was confirmed by Feyzbakhsh for $g\geq 11$ and $g\neq 12$. More recently, Feyzbakhsh has shown that certain moduli spaces of stable bundles on $X$ are isomorphic to the Brill-Noether locus of curves in $|H|$ if $g$ is sufficiently large. In this paper, we work with irreducible curves in a non-primitive ample linear system $|mH|$ and prove that Mukai's program is valid for any irreducible curve when $g\neq 2$, $mg\geq 11$ and $mg\neq 12$. Furthermore, we introduce the destabilising regions to improve Feyzbakhsh's analysis. We show that there are hyper-K\"ahler varieties as Brill-Noether loci of curves in every dimension.

Abstract:We study the virtual geometry of the moduli spaces of curves and sheaves on K3 surfaces in primitive classes. Equivalences relating the reduced Gromov-Witten invariants of K3 surfaces to characteristic numbers of stable pairs moduli spaces are proven. As a consequence, we prove the Katz-Klemm-Vafa conjecture evaluating $\lambda_g$ integrals (in all genera) in terms of explicit modular forms. Indeed, all K3 invariants in primitive classes are shown to be governed by modular forms. The method of proof is by degeneration to elliptically fibered rational surfaces. New formulas relating reduced virtual classes on K3 surfaces to standard virtual classes after degeneration are needed for both maps and sheaves. We also prove a Gromov-Witten/Pairs correspondence for toric 3-folds. Our approach uses a result of Kiem and Li to produce reduced classes. In Appendix A, we answer a number of questions about the relationship between the Kiem-Li approach, traditional virtual cycles, and symmetric obstruction theories. The interplay between the boundary geometry of the moduli spaces of curves, K3 surfaces, and modular forms is explored in Appendix B by A. Pixton.

The special Brauer group and twisted Picard varieties

Abstract:We generalise the notion of the Tate-Shafarevich group of an elliptic K3 surface with a section to the Tate-Shafarevich group of a K3 surface endowed with a linear system. The construction, which uses Grothendieck's special Brauer group, provides an efficient way to deal with moduli spaces of twisted sheaves supported on curves in a K3 surface.

Abstract:We determine explicit generators for the ring of modular forms associated with the moduli spaces of K3 surfaces with automorphism group $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^2$ and of Picard rank 13 and higher. The K3 surfaces in question carry a canonical Jacobian elliptic fibration and the modular form generators appear as coefficients in the Weierstrass-type equations describing these fibrations.

Abstract:Mukai showed that projective models of Brill–Noether general polarized K3 surfaces of genus 6–10 and 12 are obtained as linear sections of projective homogeneous varieties, and that their hyperplane sections are Brill–Noether general curves. In general, the question, raised by Knutsen, and attributed to Mukai, of whether the Brill–Noether generality of any polarized K3 surface (S,H) is equivalent to the Brill–Noether generality of smooth curves C in the linear system |H| , is still open. Using Lazarsfeld–Mukai bundle techniques, we answer this question in the affirmative for polarized K3 surfaces of genus ≤19 , which provides a new and unified proof even in the genera where Mukai models exist.

We study in details one of these surfaces, which turns out to have Picard number $20$: for this example, we describe an elliptic fibration (and its singular fibers) and the Picard lattice.

Abstract:We investigate boundedness results for families of holomorphic symplectic varieties up to birational equivalence. We prove the analogue of Zarhin's trick by for $K3$ surfaces by constructing big line bundles of low degree on certain moduli spaces of stable sheaves, and proving birational versions of Matsusaka's big theorem for holomorphic symplectic varieties. As a consequence of these results, we give a new geometric proof of the Tate conjecture for $K3$ surfaces over finite fields of characteristic at least $5$, and a simple proof of the Tate conjecture for $K3$ surfaces with Picard number at least $2$ over arbitrary finite fields -- including characteristic $2$.

Abstract:We study the symplectic action of the group (Z/2Z)^2 on a K3 surface X: we describe its action on H^2(X,Z) and the maps induced in cohomology by the rational quotient maps; we give a lattice-theoretic characterization of the resolution of singularities of the quotient X/i, where i is any of the involutions in (Z/2Z)^2. Assuming X is projective, we describe the correspondence between irreducible components of its moduli space, and those of the resolution of singularities of its quotients: this being the first description of this correspondence for a non-cyclic action, we see new phenomena, of which we provide explicit examples assuming $X$ has a polarization of degree 4.

Moduli spaces of sheaves on Fano threefolds and K3 surfaces of genus 9

Abstract:A complex smooth prime Fano threefold $X$ of genus $9$ is related via projective duality to a quartic plane curve $\Gamma$. We use this setup to study the restriction of rank $2$ stable sheaves with prescribed Chern classes on $X$ to an anticanonical $K3$ surface $S\subset X$. Varying the threefold $X$ containing $S$ gives a rational Lagrangian fibration $$\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7) \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^3$$ with generic fibre birational to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_X(2,1,7)$ of sheaves on $X$. Moreover, we prove that this rational fibration extends to an actual fibration on a birational model $\mathcal{M}$ of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$. In a last part, we use Bridgeland stability conditions to exhibit all $K$-trivial smooth birational models of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$, which consist in itself and $\mathcal{M}$. We prove that these models are related by a flop, and we describe the positive, movable and nef cones of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$.

Explicit coverings of families of elliptic surfaces by squares of curves

Abstract:We show that, for each $n>0$, there is a family of elliptic surfaces which are covered by the square of a curve of genus $2n+1$, and whose Hodge structures have an action by ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{-n})$. By considering the case $n=3$, we show that one particular family of K3 surfaces are covered by the square of genus $7$. Using this, we construct a correspondence between the square of a curve of genus $7$ and a general K3 surface in ${\mathbb P}^4$ with $15$ ordinary double points up to isogeny. This gives an explicit proof of the Kuga-Satake-Deligne correspondence for these K3 surfaces and any K3 surfaces isogenous to them, and further, a proof of the Hodge conjecture for the squares of these surfaces. We conclude that the motives of these surfaces are Kimura-finite. Our analysis gives a birational equivalence between a moduli space of curves with additional data and the moduli space of these K3 surfaces with a specific elliptic fibration.

Abstract:We describe a general (primitively) polarized K3 surface $(S,h)$ with $(h^2)=24$ as a complete intersection variety with respect to vector bundles on the $6$-dimensional moduli space $\mathcal{N}^-$ of the stable vector bundles of rank two with fixed odd determinant on a curve $C$ of genus $3$. If the curve $C$ is hyperelliptic, then $\mathcal{N}^-$ is a subvariety of the $12$-dimensional Grassmann variety $\operatorname{Gr}(\mathbf{C}^8,2)$ defined by a pencil of quadric forms. In this case, our description implies that a general $(S,h)$ is the intersection of two (7-dimensional) contact homogeneous varieties of $\operatorname{Spin}(7)$ in the Grassmann variety $\operatorname{Gr}(\mathbf{C}^8,2)$.

Abstract:Farkas and Ortega found counterexamples to Mercat's conjecture by restricting to a hyperplane section $C$ some suitable rank-two vector bundles on a $K3$ surface whose Picard group is generated by $C$ and another very ample divisor. We prove that the same bundles produce other counterexamples by restriction to hypersurface sections $C_n\in|nC|$ for all $n\ge 2$. In the process, we compute the Clifford indices of the corresponding hypersurface sections $C_n$, noting their non-generic nature for $n\ge 2$. A key ingredient to prove the (semi)stability of the restricted bundles, is Green's Explicit $H^0$ Lemma. In what concerns the (semi)stability, although general restriction theorems as demonstrated by Flenner or Feyzbakhsh are applicable for sufficiently large, explicit values of $n$, our approach works for all $n\ge 2$. It is also worth noting that our proof deviates slightly from the one of Farkas-Ortega. Employing the same strategy leads to an enhancement of the main result of a paper of Sengupta.

Abstract:The main outcome of this paper is that the variety VSP(F,10) of presentations of a general cubic form F in 6 variables as a sum of 10 cubes is a smooth symplectic 4-fold obtained a deformation of the Hilbert square of a K3 surface of genus 8. After publishing it in Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 353, No.4, 1455-1468 (2001), it was noted to us by Eyal Markman that in Theorem 3.17 we conclude without proof that VSP(F,10) should be the 4-fold of lines on another cubic 4-fold. We correct this in the e-print "Addendum to K3 surfaces of genus 8 and varieties of sums of powers of cubic fourfolds" (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.AG/0611533" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.AG/0611533">math.AG/0611533</a>), where we establish that the general VSP(F,10) is in fact a new symplectic 4-fold different from the family of lines on a cubic 4-fold.
