Abstract:Zeckendorf's Theorem states that any positive integer can be written uniquely as a sum of non-adjacent Fibonacci numbers. We consider higher-dimensional lattice analogues, where a legal decomposition of a number $n$ is a collection of lattice points such that each point is included at most once. Once a point is chosen, all future points must have strictly smaller coordinates, and the pairwise sum of the values of the points chosen equals $n$. We prove that the distribution of the number of summands in these lattice decompositions converges to a Gaussian distribution in any number of dimensions. As an immediate corollary we obtain a new proof for the asymptotic number of certain lattice paths.

Abstract:In 1945-1946, C. L. Siegel proved that an n-dimensional lattice Lambda of determinant det(Lambda) has at most m(n2) different sublattices of determinant m . det(Lambda). In 1997, the exact number of the different sublattices of index m was determined by Baake. We present a systematic treatment for counting the sublattices and derive a formula for the number of the sublattice classes under unimodular equivalence.

Abstract:The q-binomial coefficients are the polynomial cousins of the traditional binomial coefficients, and a number of identities for binomial coefficients can be translated into this polynomial setting. For instance, the familiar vanishing of the alternating sum across row n of Pascal's triangle is captured by the so-called Gaussian Formula. In this paper, we find a q-binomial congruence which synthesizes this result and Fleck's congruence for binomial coefficients.

On well-rounded sublattices of the hexagonal lattice

Abstract:We produce an explicit parameterization of well-rounded sublattices of the hexagonal lattice in the plane, splitting them into similarity classes. We use this parameterization to study the number, the greatest minimal norm, and the highest signal-to-noise ratio of well-rounded sublattices of the hexagonal lattice of a fixed index. This investigation parallels earlier work by Bernstein, Sloane, and Wright where similar questions were addressed on the space of all sublattices of the hexagonal lattice. Our restriction is motivated by the importance of well-rounded lattices for discrete optimization problems. Finally, we also discuss the existence of a natural combinatorial structure on the set of similarity classes of well-rounded sublattices of the hexagonal lattice, induced by the action of a certain matrix monoid.

Abstract:In this article, by studying the Bernstein degrees and Goldie rank polynomials, we establish a comparison between the irreducible representations of G = GL n （C） possessing the minimal Gelfand-Kirillov dimension and those induced from finite-dimensional representations of the maximal parabolic subgroup of G of type（n-1, 1）. We give the transition matrix between the two bases for the corresponding coherent families.

Abstract:The $q$-binomial coefficients are q-analogues of the binomial coefficients, counting the number of $k$-dimensional subspaces in the $n$-dimensional vector space $\mathbb{F}^n_q$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. In this paper, we define a Euclidean analogue of $q$-binomial coefficients as the number of $k$-dimensional subspaces which have an orthonormal basis in the quadratic space $(\mathbb{F}_{q}^{n},x_{1}^{2}+x_{2}^{2}+\cdots+x_{n}^{2})$ using a poset structure on these subspaces. We prove its various combinatorial properties comparing with those of $q$-binomial coefficients. In addition, we formulate the number of subspaces of other quadratic types and study some related properties.

Abstract:Narain lattices are unimodular lattices {\it in} $\R^{r,s}$, subject to certain natural equivalence relation and rationality condition. The problem of describing and counting these rational equivalence classes of Narain lattices in $\R^{2,2}$ has led to an interesting connection to binary forms and their Gauss products, as shown in [HLOYII]. As a sequel, in this paper, we study arbitrary rational Narain lattices and generalize some of our earlier results. In particular in the case of $\R^{2,2}$, a new interpretation of the Gauss product of binary forms brings new light to a number of related objects -- rank 4 rational Narain lattices, over-lattices, rank 2 primitive sublattices of an abstract rank 4 even unimodular lattice $U^2$, and isomorphisms of discriminant groups of rank 2 lattices.

Abstract:Given a discrete lattice, $\Gamma < \text{SL}_m(\mathbb{R})$, and a base point $o\in \mathbb{R}^m$, let $N_\Gamma(T)$ denote the number of points in the orbit $o\cdot \Gamma$ whose (Euclidean) length is bounded by a growing parameter, $T$. We demonstrate an abstract spectral method capable of obtaining strong asymptotic estimates for $N_\Gamma(T)$ without relying on the meromorphic continuation of higher rank Langlands Eisenstein series.

Abstract:In recent decades, the use of ideas from Minkowski's Geometry of Numbers has gained recognition as a helpful tool in bounding the number of solutions to modular congruences with variables from short intervals. In 1941, Mahler introduced an analogue to the Geometry of Numbers in function fields over finite fields. Here, we build on Mahler's ideas and develop results useful for bounding the sizes of intersections of lattices and convex bodies in $\mathbb{F}_q((1/T))^d$, which are more precise than what is known over $\mathbb{R}^d$. These results are then applied to various problems regarding bounding the number of solutions to congruences in $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$, such as the number of points on polynomial curves in low dimensional subspaces of finite fields. Our results improve on a number of previous bounds due to Bagshaw, Cilleruelo, Shparlinski and Zumalacárregui. We also present previous techniques developed by various authors for estimating certain energy/point counts in a unified manner.

Abstract:There exist as many index-$k$ sublattices of the hexagonal lattice up to isometry as there exist lattice triangles with normalized volume $k$ up to unimodular equivalence, which can be explained using orbifolds. In dimension 3, it was noted that the number of sublattices of the fcc and the bcc lattices and the number of lattice tetrahedra all seem to be the same. We provide a bijection between the sublattices of the coweight lattice $A^*_n$ and the $n$-dimensional lattice simplices. It explains, proves, and generalizes the observed coincidences to arbitrary dimension.

Abstract:Over 200 years ago, Gauss discovered a composition law on the $SL_2({\mathbb Z})$-equivalence classes of primitive binary quadratic forms. Since then, bijections of classes of binary forms have been found with ideal class groups of quadratic rings. This paper uses one such bijection given by Bhargava, relating classes of projective binary cubic forms to the $3$-torsion of an ideal class group, to find an explicit form for a cubic analogue of Gaussian composition.

Abstract:We construct an explicit basis for the coordinate ring of the Bott-Samelson variety Z_i associated to G = GL(n) and an arbitrary sequence of simple reflections i. Our basis is parametrized by certain standard tableaux and generalizes the Standard Monomial basis for Schubert varieties. Our standard tableaux have a natural crystal graph structure.

Abstract:The problem of computing the index of a coincidence isometry of the hyper cubic lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$ is considered. The normal form of a rational orthogonal matrix is analyzed in detail, and explicit formulas for the index of certain coincidence isometries of $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$ are obtained. These formulas generalize the known results for $n\le 4$.

Abstract:Making use of a telescoping approach, three types of sums of binomial quotients are examined. The summation terms of the two types of alternating sums have symmetry (i.e., their numerators and denominators are completely symmetric). We obtained a series of their explicit sums. Furthermore, by means of binomial relations, three recurrence relations of the sums are derived. In addition, series of double summation formulae involving binomial quotients are established.

Bimonotone Subdivisions of Point Configurations in the Plane

Abstract:Bimonotone subdivisions in two dimensions are subdivisions all of whose sides are either vertical or have nonnegative slope. They correspond to statistical estimates of probability distributions of strongly positively dependent random variables. The number of bimonotone subdivisions compared to the total number of subdivisions of a point configuration provides insight into how often the random variables are positively dependent. We give recursions as well as formulas for the numbers of bimonotone and total subdivisions of $2\times n$ grid configurations in the plane. Furthermore, we connect the former to the large Schröder numbers. We also show that the numbers of bimonotone and total subdivisions of a $2\times n$ grid are asymptotically equal. We then provide algorithms for counting bimonotone subdivisions for any $m \times n$ grid. Finally, we prove that all bimonotone triangulations of an $m \times n$ grid are connected by flips. This gives rise to an algorithm for counting the number of bimonotone (and total) triangulations of an $m\times n$ grid.

Abstract:Let Λ be an n -dimensional lattice. For any n -dimensional vector c and positive real number s , let Ds,c and DΛ,s,c denote the continuous Gaussian distribution and the discrete Gaussian distribution over Λ , respectively. In this paper, we establish the exact relationship between the second and fourth moments centered around c of the discrete Gaussian distribution DΛ,s,c and those of the continuous Gaussian distribution Ds,c , respectively. This provides a quantization form of the result obtained by Micciancio and Regev on the second and fourth moments of discrete Gaussian distribution. Using the relationship, we also derive an uncertainty principle for Gaussian functions, which extend the result of Zheng, Zhao, and Xu. Our proof is based on combination of the idea of Micciancio and Regev and the idea of Zheng, Zhao, and Xu, where the main tool is high-dimensional Fourier transform.

A Unified Approach to Unimodality of Gaussian Polynomials

Abstract:In 2013, Pak and Panova proved the strict unimodality property of $q$-binomial coefficients $\binom{\ell+m}{m}_q$ (as polynomials in $q$) based on the combinatorics of Young tableaux and the semigroup property of Kronecker coefficients. They showed it to be true for all $\ell,m\geq 8$ and a few other cases. We propose a different approach to this problem based on computer algebra, where we establish a closed form for the coefficients of these polynomials and then use cylindrical algebraic decomposition to identify exactly the range of coefficients where strict unimodality holds. This strategy allows us to tackle generalizations of the problem, e.g., to show unimodality with larger gaps or unimodality of related sequences. In particular, we present proofs of two additional cases of a conjecture by Stanley and Zanello.

Abstract:In this paper we describe each coefficient of the Siegel series associated to a quadratic $\mathfrak{o}$-lattice $L$ in terms of lattice counting problems, where $\mathfrak{o}$ is the ring of integers of a non-Archimedean local field of characteristic $0$. Under the restriction that $p$ is odd and that the dimension of the radical of the quadratic space $L\otimes\kappa$ on the residue field $\kappa$ is at most $2$, we provide explicit values of coefficients and reprove the functional equation of the Siegel series.
