Abstract:An overlap, or border, of a word is a prefix that is equal to the suffix of the same length. An overlap with q errors is a prefix which has distance q from the suffix of the same length; here, 0-error overlaps are classic ones. Unbordered, or bifix-free, words are a central notion in combinatorics on words and have a prominent role in many related areas, such as pattern matching or frame synchronization. On the other hand, words with 2-error overlaps arose as a characterization of isometric words, a notion recently introduced in the framework of hypercubes and their isometric subgraphs. This paper investigates the density of words with 0, 1, 2-error overlaps, where the words are taken over a generic k -ary alphabet, k≥2 , and the distance they refer to is the Hamming or the Lee distance. Estimates on the limit density values are provided and compared in the case of binary and quaternary alphabets.

The analogue of overlap-freeness for the period-doubling sequence

Abstract:Good words are binary words avoiding factors 11 and 1001, and patterns 0000 and 00010100. We show that good words bear the same relationship to the period-doubling sequence that overlap-free words bear to the Thue-Morse sequence. We prove an analogue of Fife's Theorem for good words, exhibit the lexicographically least and greatest infinite good words, and determine the patterns avoided by the period doubling word.

Abstract:We proceed with the study of ultimate periodicity properties related to overlaps between the suffixes of a left-infinite word and the prefixes of a right-infinite word . For a positive integer n , let g ( n ) be n minus the maximum length of overlaps between the suffix of and the prefix of of length n . In a recent publication we have shown that the function g has finite image if and only if and are ultimately periodic words with a same root. In this paper we give an asymptotic characterization of words and for which the function g has finite image. We prove that this condition is true if and only if the sequence tends to zero

Abstract:Two finite words u and v are called abelian equivalent if each letter occurs equally many times in both u and v . The abelian closure A(x) of an infinite word x is the set of infinite words y such that, for each factor u of y , there exists a factor v of x which is abelian equivalent to u . The notion of an abelian closure gives a characterization of Sturmian words: among uniformly recurrent binary words, periodic and aperiodic Sturmian words are exactly those words for which A(x) equals the shift orbit closure Ω(x) . In this paper, we investigate how this property extends to non-binary words. We consider the abelian closures of most natural generalizations of Sturmian words to non-binary alphabets, such as balanced words and minimal complexity words. We characterize the abelian closures of words in these families and show that in both families, there exist both words which satisfy the property A(x)=Ω(x) and which do not. We observe that for Arnoux-Rauzy words, we always have a strict inclusion Ω(x)⊂A(x) . We also consider abelian closures of general subshifts and make some initial observations of their abelian closures and pose some related open questions.

Abstract:We begin a systematic study of the relations between subword complexity of infinite words and their power avoidance. Among other things, we show that – the Thue–Morse word has the minimum possible subword complexity over all overlap-free binary words and all ( 7 3 ) -power-free binary words, but not over all ( 7 3 ) + -power-free binary words; – the twisted Thue–Morse word has the maximum possible subword complexity over all overlap-free binary words, but no word has the maximum subword complexity over all ( 7 3 ) -power-free binary words; – if some word attains the minimum possible subword complexity over all square-free ternary words, then one such word is the ternary Thue word; – the recently constructed 1-2-bonacci word has the minimum possible subword complexity over all symmetric square-free ternary words.

Incremental computation of the set of period sets

Abstract:Overlaps between words are crucial in many areas of computer science, such as code design, stringology, and bioinformatics. A self overlapping word is characterized by its periods and borders. A period of a word $u$ is the starting position of a suffix of $u$ that is also a prefix $u$, and such a suffix is called a border. Each word of length, say $n>0$, has a set of periods, but not all combinations of integers are sets of periods. Computing the period set of a word $u$ takes linear time in the length of $u$. We address the question of computing, the set, denoted $\Gamma_n$, of all period sets of words of length $n$. Although period sets have been characterized, there is no formula to compute the cardinality of $\Gamma_n$ (which is exponential in $n$), and the known dynamic programming algorithm to enumerate $\Gamma_n$ suffers from its space complexity. We present an incremental approach to compute $\Gamma_n$ from $\Gamma_{n-1}$, which reduces the space complexity, and then a constructive certification algorithm useful for verification purposes. The incremental approach defines a parental relation between sets in $\Gamma_{n-1}$ and $\Gamma_n$, enabling one to investigate the dynamics of period sets, and their intriguing statistical properties. Moreover, the period set of a word $u$ is the key for computing the absence probability of $u$ in random texts. Thus, knowing $\Gamma_n$ is useful to assess the significance of word statistics, such as the number of missing words in a random text.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a study of inverse monoids presented by a set X X subject to relations of the form e i = f i {e_i} = {f_i} , i ∈ I i \in I , where e i {e_i} and f i {f_i} are Dyck words, i.e. idempotents of the free inverse monoid on X X . Some general results of Stephen are used to reduce the word problem for such a presentation to the membership problem for a certain subtree of the Cayley graph of the free group on X X . In the finitely presented case the word problem is solved by using Rabin’s theorem on the second order monadic logic of the infinite binary tree. Some connections with the theory of rational subsets of the free group and the theory of context-free languages are explored.

Abstract:We consider words over a binary alphabet. A word $w$ is overlap-free if it does not have factors (blocks of consecutive letters) of the form $uvuvu$ for nonempty $u$. Let $M(w)$ denote the number of positions that are middle positions of squares in $w$. We show that for overlap-free binary words, $2M(w) \le |w|+3$, and that there are infinitely many overlap-free binary words for which $2M(w)=|w|+3$.

Satisfiability of Context-free String Constraints with Subword-ordering and Transducers

Abstract:We study the satisfiability of string constraints where context-free membership constraints may be imposed on variables. Additionally a variable may be constrained to be a subword of a word obtained by shuffling variables and their transductions. The satisfiability problem is known to be undecidable even without rational transductions. It is known to be NExptime-complete without transductions, if the subword relations between variables do not have a cyclic dependency between them. We show that the satisfiability problem stays decidable in this fragment even when rational transductions are added. It is 2NExptime-complete with context-free membership, and NExptime-complete with only regular membership. For the lower bound we prove a technical lemma that is of independent interest: The length of the shortest word in the intersection of a pushdown automaton (of size $O(n)$) and $n$ finite-state automata (each of size $O(n)$) can be double exponential in $n$.

Abstract:The stable set associated to a given set <math>S</math> of nonerasing endomorphisms or substitutions is the set of all right infinite words that can be indefinitely desubstituted over <math>S</math>. This notion generalizes the notion of sets of fixed points of morphisms. It is linked to S-adicity and to property preserving morphisms. Two main questions are considered. Which known sets of infinite words are stable sets? Which ones are stable sets of a finite set of substitutions? While bringing answers to the previous questions, some new characterizations of several well-known sets of words such as the set of binary balanced words or the set of episturmian words are presented. A characterization of the set of nonerasing endomorphisms that preserve episturmian words is also provided.

Abstract:Universal cycles are generalizations of de Bruijn cycles and Gray codes that were introduced originally by Chung, Diaconis, and Graham in 1992. They have been developed by many authors since, for various combinatorial objects such as strings, subsets, permutations, partitions, vector spaces, and designs. One generalization of universal cycles, which require almost complete overlap of consecutive words, is $s$-overlap cycles, which relax such a constraint. In this paper we study permutations and some closely related class of strings, namely juggling sequences and functions. We prove the existence of $s$-overlap cycles for these objects, as they do not always lend themselves to the universal cycle structure.

Abstract:The class of all finitely generated semigroups with a deterministic context-free word problem is shown to be closed under free products, answering a question of T. Brough, A. J. Cain, and M. Pfeiffer. On the other hand, it is proved that the class of all finitely generated monoids with a deterministic context-free word problem is not closed under monoid free products.

Abstract:We survey recent results on the topological complexity of context-free omega-languages which form the second level of the Chomsky hierarchy of languages of infinite words. In particular, we consider the Borel hierarchy and the Wadge hierarchy of non-deterministic or deterministic context-free omega-languages. We study also decision problems, the links with the notions of ambiguity and of degrees of ambiguity, and the special case of omega-powers.

Counting overlapping pairs of strings

Abstract:A correlation is a binary vector that encodes all possible positions of overlaps of two words, where an overlap for an ordered pair of words (u,v) occurs if a suffix of word u matches a prefix of word v. As multiple pairs can have the same correlation, it is relevant to count how many pairs of words share the same correlation depending on the alphabet size and word length n. We exhibit recurrences to compute the number of such pairs -- which is termed population size -- for any correlation; for this, we exploit a relationship between overlaps of two words and self-overlap of one word. This theorem allows us to compute the number of pairs with a longest overlap of a given length and to show that the expected length of the longest border of two words asymptotically diverges, which solves two open questions raised by Gabric in 2022. Finally, we also provide bounds for the asymptotic of the population ratio of any correlation. Given the importance of word overlaps in areas like word combinatorics, bioinformatics, and digital communication, our results may ease analyses of algorithms for string processing, code design, or genome assembly.

On the word problem for weakly compressible monoids

Abstract:We study the language-theoretic properties of the word problem, in the sense of Duncan & Gilman, of weakly compressible monoids, as defined by Adian & Oganesian. We show that if C is a reversal-closed super- AFL , as defined by Greibach, then M has word problem in C if and only if its compressed left monoid L ( M ) has word problem in C. As a special case, we may take C to be the class of context-free or indexed languages. As a corollary, we find many new classes of monoids with decidable rational subset membership problem. Finally, we show that it is decidable whether a one-relation monoid containing a non-trivial idempotent has context-free word problem. This answers a generalization of a question first asked by Zhang in 1992.

Abstract:This paper considers the word problem for free inverse monoids of finite rank from a language theory perspective. It is shown that no free inverse monoid has context-free word problem; that the word problem of the free inverse monoid of rank $1$ is both $2$-context-free (an intersection of two context-free languages) and ET0L; that the co-word problem of the free inverse monoid of rank $1$ is context-free; and that the word problem of a free inverse monoid of rank greater than $1$ is not poly-context-free.

Abstract:Partial words are sequences over a finite alphabet that may contain wildcard symbols, called holes, which match or are compatible with all letters; partial words without holes are said to be full words (or simply words). Given an infinite partial word w, the number of distinct full words over the alphabet that are compatible with factors of w of length n, called subwords of w, refers to a measure of complexity of infinite partial words so-called subword complexity. This measure is of particular interest because we can construct partial words with subword complexities not achievable by full words. In this paper, we consider the notion of recurrence over infinite partial words, that is, we study whether all of the finite subwords of a given infinite partial word appear infinitely often, and we establish connections between subword complexity and recurrence in this more general framework.

Abstract:We define the excedence set and the excedance word on $G_{r,n}$, generalizing a work of Ehrenborg and Steingrimsson and use the inclusion-exclusion principle to calculate the number of colored permutations having a prescribed excedance word. We show some symmetric properties as Log concavity and unimodality of a specific sequence of excedance words.

Abstract:A $4^-$-power is a non-empty word of the form $XXXX^-$, where $X^-$ is obtained from $X$ by erasing the last letter. A binary word is called {\em faux-bonacci} if it contains no $4^-$-powers, and no factor 11. We show that faux-bonacci words bear the same relationship to the Fibonacci morphism that overlap-free words bear to the Thue-Morse morphism. We prove the analogue of Fife's Theorem for faux-bonacci words, and characterize the lexicographically least and greatest infinite faux-bonacci words.
