Abstract:The notion of Abelian complexity of infinite words was recently used by the three last authors to investigate various Abelian properties of words. In particular, using van der Waerden's theorem, they proved that if a word avoids Abelian k-powers for some integer k, then its Abelian complexity is unbounded. This suggests the following question: How frequently do Abelian k-powers occur in a word having bounded Abelian complexity? In particular, does every uniformly recurrent word having bounded Abelian complexity begin in an Abelian k-power? While this is true for various classes of uniformly recurrent words, including for example the class of all Sturmian words, in this paper we show the existence of uniformly recurrent binary words, having bounded Abelian complexity, which admit an infinite number of suffixes which do not begin in an Abelian square. We also show that the shift orbit closure of any infinite binary overlap-free word contains a word which avoids Abelian cubes in the beginning. We also consider the effect of morphisms on Abelian complexity and show that the morphic image of a word having bounded Abelian complexity has bounded Abelian complexity. Finally, we give an open problem on avoidability of Abelian squares in infinite binary words and show that it is equivalent to a well-known open problem of Pirillo–Varricchio and Halbeisen–Hungerbühler.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 2913-2925, December 2024. We construct an infinite binary word with critical exponent 3 that avoids abelian 4-powers. Our method gives an algorithm to determine whether certain types of morphic sequences avoid additive powers. We also show that there are [math] binary words of length [math] that avoid abelian 4-powers, which improves on previous estimates.

Abstract:An overlap, or border, of a word is a prefix that is equal to the suffix of the same length. An overlap with q errors is a prefix which has distance q from the suffix of the same length; here, 0-error overlaps are classic ones. Unbordered, or bifix-free, words are a central notion in combinatorics on words and have a prominent role in many related areas, such as pattern matching or frame synchronization. On the other hand, words with 2-error overlaps arose as a characterization of isometric words, a notion recently introduced in the framework of hypercubes and their isometric subgraphs. This paper investigates the density of words with 0, 1, 2-error overlaps, where the words are taken over a generic k -ary alphabet, k≥2 , and the distance they refer to is the Hamming or the Lee distance. Estimates on the limit density values are provided and compared in the case of binary and quaternary alphabets.

The analogue of overlap-freeness for the period-doubling sequence

Abstract:Good words are binary words avoiding factors 11 and 1001, and patterns 0000 and 00010100. We show that good words bear the same relationship to the period-doubling sequence that overlap-free words bear to the Thue-Morse sequence. We prove an analogue of Fife's Theorem for good words, exhibit the lexicographically least and greatest infinite good words, and determine the patterns avoided by the period doubling word.

Abstract:A $4^-$-power is a non-empty word of the form $XXXX^-$, where $X^-$ is obtained from $X$ by erasing the last letter. A binary word is called {\em faux-bonacci} if it contains no $4^-$-powers, and no factor 11. We show that faux-bonacci words bear the same relationship to the Fibonacci morphism that overlap-free words bear to the Thue-Morse morphism. We prove the analogue of Fife's Theorem for faux-bonacci words, and characterize the lexicographically least and greatest infinite faux-bonacci words.

Abstract:Two finite words u and v are called abelian equivalent if each letter occurs equally many times in both u and v . The abelian closure A(x) of an infinite word x is the set of infinite words y such that, for each factor u of y , there exists a factor v of x which is abelian equivalent to u . The notion of an abelian closure gives a characterization of Sturmian words: among uniformly recurrent binary words, periodic and aperiodic Sturmian words are exactly those words for which A(x) equals the shift orbit closure Ω(x) . In this paper, we investigate how this property extends to non-binary words. We consider the abelian closures of most natural generalizations of Sturmian words to non-binary alphabets, such as balanced words and minimal complexity words. We characterize the abelian closures of words in these families and show that in both families, there exist both words which satisfy the property A(x)=Ω(x) and which do not. We observe that for Arnoux-Rauzy words, we always have a strict inclusion Ω(x)⊂A(x) . We also consider abelian closures of general subshifts and make some initial observations of their abelian closures and pose some related open questions.

Abstract:The (bitwise) complement $\overline{x}$ of a binary word $x$ is obtained by changing each $0$ in $x$ to $1$ and vice versa. An $\textit{antisquare}$ is a nonempty word of the form $x\, \overline{x}$. In this paper, we study infinite binary words that do not contain arbitrarily large antisquares. For example, we show that the repetition threshold for the language of infinite binary words containing exactly two distinct antisquares is $(5+\sqrt{5})/2$. We also study repetition thresholds for related classes, where "two" in the previous sentence is replaced by a larger number. We say a binary word is $\textit{good}$ if the only antisquares it contains are $01$ and $10$. We characterize the minimal antisquares, that is, those words that are antisquares but all proper factors are good. We determine the growth rate of the number of good words of length $n$ and determine the repetition threshold between polynomial and exponential growth for the number of good words.

Critical exponent of binary words with few distinct palindromes

Abstract:We study infinite binary words that contain few distinct palindromes. In particular, we classify such words according to their critical exponents. This extends results by Fici and Zamboni [TCS 2013]. Interestingly, the words with 18 and 20 palindromes happen to be morphic images of the fixed point of the morphism $\texttt{0}\mapsto\texttt{01}$, $\texttt{1}\mapsto\texttt{21}$, $\texttt{2}\mapsto\texttt{0}$.

Abstract:We begin a systematic study of the relations between subword complexity of infinite words and their power avoidance. Among other things, we show that – the Thue–Morse word has the minimum possible subword complexity over all overlap-free binary words and all ( 7 3 ) -power-free binary words, but not over all ( 7 3 ) + -power-free binary words; – the twisted Thue–Morse word has the maximum possible subword complexity over all overlap-free binary words, but no word has the maximum subword complexity over all ( 7 3 ) -power-free binary words; – if some word attains the minimum possible subword complexity over all square-free ternary words, then one such word is the ternary Thue word; – the recently constructed 1-2-bonacci word has the minimum possible subword complexity over all symmetric square-free ternary words.

Abstract:Let u be a finite word and r be a positive integer, a power is a word of the form uu...u}rtimes . Particularly, a square is a word of the form uu . Fraenkel and Simpson conjectured in 1998 that the number of distinct squares in a word is bounded by its length. This conjecture was proved recently by Brlek and Li. Besides, a stronger upper bound for binary words was conjectured by Jonoska, Manea and Seki by stating that, for a word of length n over the alphabet {a,b} , if k is the least of the number of a's and the number of b's and k≥2 , then the number of distinct squares is upper bounded by 2k−12k+2n . In this article, we prove this conjecture by giving a stronger statement on the number of distinct powers in a binary word.

Abstract:We say that two finite words $u$ and $v$ are abelian equivalent if and only if they have the same number of occurrences of each letter, or equivalently if they define the same Parikh vector. In this paper we investigate various abelian properties of words including abelian complexity, and abelian powers. We study the abelian complexity of the Thue-Morse word and the Tribonacci word, and answer an old question of G. Rauzy by exhibiting a class of words whose abelian complexity is everywhere equal to 3. We also investigate abelian repetitions in words and show that any infinite word with bounded abelian complexity contains abelian $k$-powers for every positive integer $k$.
Codes with restricted overlaps: expandability, constructions, and bounds

Abstract:Consider a $q$-ary block code satisfying the property that no $l$-letters long codeword's prefix occurs as a suffix of any codeword for $l$ inside some interval. We determine a general upper bound on the maximum size of these codes and a tighter bound for codes where overlaps with lengths not exceeding $k$ are prohibited. We then provide constructions for codes with various restrictions on overlap lengths and use them to determine lower bounds on the maximum sizes. In particular, we construct $(1,k)$-overlap-free codes where $k \geq n/2$ and $n$ denotes the block size, expand a known construction of $(k,n-1)$-overlap-free codes, and combine the ideas behind both constructions to obtain $(t_1,t_2)$-overlap-free codes and codes that are simultaneously $(1,k)$- and $(n-k,n-1)$-overlap-free for some $k < n/2$. In the case when overlaps of lengths between 1 and $k$ are prohibited, we complete the characterisation of non-expandable codes started by Cai, Wang, and Feng (2023).

Abstract:We revisit the topic of power-free morphisms, focusing on the properties of the class of complementary morphisms. Such morphisms are defined over a 2-letter alphabet, and map the letters 0 and 1 to complementary words. We prove that every prefix of the famous Thue–Morse word t gives a complementary morphism that is 3+ -free and hence α -free for every real number α>3 . We also describe, using a 4-state binary finite automaton, the lengths of all prefixes of t that give cubefree complementary morphisms. Next, we show that 3-free (cubefree) complementary morphisms of length k exist for all k∉{3,6} . Moreover, if k is not of the form 3⋅2n , then the images of letters can be chosen to be factors of t . Finally, we observe that each cubefree complementary morphism is also α -free for some α<3 ; in contrast, no binary morphism that maps each letter to a word of length 3 (resp., a word of length 6) is α -free for any α<3 . In addition to more traditional techniques of combinatorics on words, we also rely on the Walnut theorem-prover. Its use and limitations are discussed.

Abstract:We proceed with the study of ultimate periodicity properties related to overlaps between the suffixes of a left-infinite word and the prefixes of a right-infinite word . For a positive integer n , let g ( n ) be n minus the maximum length of overlaps between the suffix of and the prefix of of length n . In a recent publication we have shown that the function g has finite image if and only if and are ultimately periodic words with a same root. In this paper we give an asymptotic characterization of words and for which the function g has finite image. We prove that this condition is true if and only if the sequence tends to zero

Abstract:We consider questions related to the structure of infinite words (over an integer alphabet) with bounded additive complexity, i.e., words with the property that the number of distinct sums exhibited by factors of the same length is bounded by a constant that depends only on the word. We describe how bounded additive complexity impacts the slope of the word and how a non-erasing morphism may affect the boundedness of a given word's additive complexity. We prove the existence of recurrent words with constant additive complexity equal to any given odd positive integer. In the last section, we discuss a generalization of additive complexity. Our results suggest that words with bounded additive complexity may be viewed as a generalization of balanced words.

Abstract:This note is an attempt to attack a conjecture of Fraenkel and Simpson stated in 1998 concerning the number of distinct squares in a finite word. By counting the number of (right-)special factors, we give an upper bound of the number of {\em $k$-powers} in a finite word for any integer $k\geq 3$. By {\em $k$-power}, we mean a word of the form $\underbrace{uu...u}_{k \; \text{times}}$.

Abstract:A square-free word $w$ over a fixed alphabet $\Sigma$ is extremal if every word obtained from $w$ by inserting a single letter from $\Sigma$ (at any position) contains a square. Grytczuk et al. recently introduced the concept of extremal square-free word, and demonstrated that there are arbitrarily long extremal square-free ternary words. We find all lengths which admit an extremal square-free ternary word. In particular, we show that there is an extremal square-free ternary word of every sufficiently large length. We also solve the analogous problem for circular words.
