Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to characterize and understand the effects of polymer binder, thixotropic agent, solvent and organic medium content on the rheological properties of silver pastes for screen printing front electrode films of solar cells. Design/methodology/approach Dispersions of silver particles (surface modified with oleic acid) in ethyl cellulose (EC) polymer solutions with and without thixotropic agent were prepared, and yield stress values were measured by setting shear stress to characterize the inter-particle interaction strength of pastes. Steady-state flow, three interval thixotropy shear test and oscillatory measurements were conducted to study the effect of EC polymer and thixotropic agent on viscosity, structure rebuilding and viscoelastic properties of electrode pastes. The effect of solvent was studied by investigating the steady viscosity of cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) polymer solutions and Ag dispersions. Findings Weak flocculation network of silver particles was produced because of depletion flocculation. Besides the interaction between thixotropic agent micelles, EC polymer also has a significant interaction with thixotropic agent. Merely increasing EC polymer or thixotropic agent content is not the best way to prevent the layer printed from laying down. The effect of solvent on the viscosity of paste is mainly attributed to the difference of hydromechanics radius and configuration of CAB polymer in solvents. With the increase of organic medium content, the properties of electrode pastes were converted from rigidity to flexibility. Originality/value It is still a challenge to obtain high-quality front electrode films for crystalline silicon solar cells by screen printing, because of the difficulty in reducing shadowing losses while ensuring a low series resistance and high filling factor. The paste rheological properties are the key properties related to the paste’s passing ability through the meshes and resistance of paste spreading on the substrate. Organic medium as an important component of the paste is acknowledged to be used to tailor the paste’s rheological properties and have a great role in screen printing.

Abstract:Different silver conductive pastes were prepared and applied in solar cell.Their rheological properties were adjusted by changing ethyl-cellulose contents in the organic vehicle.With the measurement of rheological properties of silver conductive pastes and grid morphologies as well as electrical properties of the cells,it was found that rheological properties of silver conductive pastes affected the electrical properties of the cells.When the ethyl-cellulose in the organic vehicle was as high as 6%,the paste had high viscosity in low shear rate and low viscosity in high shear rate,whose frontal electrodes had slicker fringe,higher height and smaller width,while the cells had better electrical properties with high filled factor(FF) and conversion efficiency(η).

Abstract:Optimizing the performance of front silver paste is of great significance in improving the efficiency of the photoelectric conversion of crystalline silicon solar cells. As a conductive functional phase of silver paste, the structure and performance of silver powder have an important influence on the sintering process of silver paste and the conductivity of silver electrodes. Because of their two−dimensional structure, flake silver powders can effectively increase the contact area with other silver powders and silicon cells before sintering. Additionally, flake silver particles have higher surface energy and sintering activity than spherical silver particles of the same particle size. However, recent research has mainly focused on the influence of the particle size of silver powder. This paper fills the research gap regarding the morphology of silver powders and clarifies the influence of flake silver powders on the performance of silver paste. The influence of the ratio of spherical silver powder to flake silver powder in silver paste on the sheet resistance, adhesion, and specific contact resistivity of silver film after sintering at 800 °C was studied, and the optimal ratio was determined according to a cross−sectional contact picture of the silver film. The results showed that with the increase in the mass fraction of the flake silver powder, the sheet resistance of the sintered silver film gradually increased, the adhesion first increased and then decreased, and the specific contact resistance first decreased and then increased. When the flake silver powder content was 0%, the minimum sheet resistance of the silver film was 2.41 m Ω/£. When the flake silver powder content was 30%, the maximum adhesion of the silver film was 6.07 N. When the flake silver powder content was 50%, the minimum specific contact resistivity of the silver film was 0.25 Ω·cm2. In conclusion, when the flake silver powder content was 30%, the comprehensive performance of the silver film was the best.

Abstract:Screen-printing is widely used for low-cost Si solar cells to realize metal/semiconductor contacts, namely ohmic contacts, which is an important factor to improve efficiency and filling factor (FF). The measurement of specific contact resistance is a useful method to evaluate quantitatively the quality of ohmic contact. In the present work, the specific contact resistances were measured by transfer-length method (TLM) in order to study quantitatively the influence of silver particle size and glass constituents on the Ag/Si contact, in which the silver pastes were used to form the front-side grids on Si substrates. The results show that the specific contact resistance decreases with the increased silver particle size and the Pb concentration in glass to form good ohmic contacts.

Abstract:We synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with a diameter ranging from 300 to 800 nm by chemical reduction, added them into commercial silver paste used for the front-contact metallization of crystalline Si (c-Si) solar cells, and investigated the effects of AgNPs on the firing behavior of the silver paste on c-Si solar cells by differential scanning calorimetry, electron scanning microscopy, and contact resistance measurement. It was observed that surface sintering of AgNPs occurred at a lower temperature compared with that of micrometer-sized Ag particles in commercial silver paste. With the assistance of AgNPs, more Ag+ ions were dissolved in fluidized glass frit during the firing process of the paste, and a continuous layer of Ag was reduced and deposited between glass frit and Si substrate. The Ag layer enhanced electrical conduction and decreased the specific contact resistivity of the paste on c-Si solar cells. Thus, a firing mechanism of AgNP-aided silver paste was proposed. The experimental data demonstrate that AgNPs can be used to improve the properties of the fired paste on c-Si solar cells and AgNP-aided silver paste is a promising material used for the front-contact grids on c-Si solar cells. Abstract:Silver (Ag) paste is widely used in semiconductor metallization, especially in silicon solar cells. Ag powder is the material with the highest proportion in Ag paste. The morphology and structure of Ag powder are crucial which determine its characteristics, especially for the sintering activity. In this work, a simple method was developed to synthesize a type of microcrystalline spherical Ag particles (SP-A) with internal pores and the structural changes and sintering behavior were thoroughly studied by combining ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), in-situ heating X-ray diffraction (XRD), focused ion beam (FIB), and thermal analysis measurement. Due to the unique internal pores, the grain size of SP-A is smaller, and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) is higher than that of traditional solid Ag particles. As a result, the sintering activity of SP-A is excellent, which can form a denser sintered body and form silver nanoparticles at the Ag–Si interface to improve silver silicon contact. Polycrystalline silicon solar cell built with SP-A obtained a low series resistance ( R s ) and a high photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.26%. These fill a gap in Ag particle structure research, which is significant for the development of high-performance electronic Ag particles and efficient semiconductor devices.

Abstract:In the back-side metallization process of the passivated emitter and rear cell (PERC), the contact between the Ag rear electrode and Al rear electrode is an important factor for cell efficiency. In this paper, we report on the effect of Ag paste containing two types of oxide glass frit, V-B-Te and Pb-B-Si, on the Ag/Al contact, owing to their remarkable contrast with regard to the Ag/Al contact resistance. By combining the observation of the Ag/Al interface structure with the investigation on the interaction between glass and Al, glass transition temperature, and the distribution of glass phase in the Ag electrode, the influence of the glass phase on the contact resistance between rear Ag and Al electrodes was clearly elucidated.
Pb-free Silver Pastes with SnO-B2O3 Glass Frits for Crystalline Silicon Solar Cells

Abstract:Pb-free silver pastes based on SnO-B2O3 glass frits were synthesized and used for the front-contact electrodes of crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells. First, four kinds of SnO-B2O3 glass frits with different amounts of SnO were synthesized by a melt-quenching method, and four Ag pastes based on these glass frits were prepared correspondingly. Then, Ag pastes were printed on c-Si solar cells and fired to form electrodes. The photovoltaic performance of the cells was measured and analyzed. The surface morphology of Ag electrodes was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results showed that the peak firing temperature of the Ag pastes had a significant influence on the cell efficiency. The Ag pastes fired at 760 °C possessed the densest microstructure and the largest efficiency. The maximum efficiency was 10.4% with the optimal glass composition. In addition, the Ag/Si interfacial microstructure was studied by scanning transmission electron microscopy. It was found that Ag crystallites and granules of Ag-Sn intermetallic compound were embedded in the SiNx anti-reflection coating, indicating that the photocurrent could be conducted through these metallic granules besides a direct ohmic contact between bulk Ag and Si emitter. The experimental data showed that SnO-B2O3 was a promising glass frit to be used in the front-contact Ag pastes for c-Si solar cells.
Effects of organic additives on the microstructural, rheological and electrical properties of silver paste for LTCC applications

Abstract:Silver powders were prepared by a chemical reduction method. Effects of different surfactants during this preparation process were examined. Using these silver powders, silver pastes were prepared for low temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) applications. Another batch of different surfactants were added into the silver paste and evaluated. Moreover, various organic thixotropic agents were used to modify the thixotropy behavior of the silver paste. It was found that the surfactants of PVP (Polyvinyl pyrrolidone, for preparation of the silver powder) and Span-85 (for the preparation of silver paste) exhibited the best performance, with an electrical resistivity of 0.11 mΩ mm. The silver paste with the thixotropic agent of hydrogenated castor oil shows the largest thixotropic index of 1.56. Using different organic additives, the microstructural, rheological and electrical properties of the silver paste can be considerably improved, and our results shed light on the optimization of the silver paste for LTCC applications.

Abstract:Optimally designed silver‐silicon (Ag‐Si) contacts based on silver (Ag) paste screen printing and the rapid sintering process, have been widely utilized in mainstream crystalline silicon solar cells, enabling to reduce contact resistance and high photo‐conversion efficiency. Ag powder is the largest conductive component in Ag paste, but its impact on the formation of Ag‐Si contacts lacks in‐depth research and comprehensive understanding. In this work, we demonstrated that the oxygen adsorption capacity of silver powders affected the formation of Ag‐Si contacts by enhancing the reactivity of Ag powders with glass frits, and had a significant effect on the performance of devices. The generation of Ag2O introduced by surface absorbed oxygen promoted the transformation of [TeO4] triangular bipyramidal into [TeO3] triangular pyramid, thus destroying the network structure of the glass frits. This structural decay accelerated the spreading of glass frits in the bulk, causing the glass frits to come into contact with SiNx layers earlier and facilitating the formation of the Ag‐Si contacts. This work not only provides a complete picture of the interaction between Ag powder and glass frits, but also a new direction to optimize the Ag‐Si contacts. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The purpose of the study is to characterize and improve the fundamental understanding of the effects of Ethyl Cellulose (EC) binder on the rheological properties of silver pastes for screen printing front electrode films of solar cells. Dispersions of silver particles (surface modified with oleic acid) in EC polymer solutions with and without thixotropic agent were prepared; and yield stress values were measured by setting shear stress to characterize the strength of interaction in pastes. Week flocculation network of silver particles is produced due to depletion of flocculation. EC polymer also has a significant interaction with thixotropic agent. Down-sweep flow curves of dispersions without thixotropic agent were measured and well fitted by Generalized Casson model. The model parameters p indicated that EC polymer with high molecular weight has a stronger shear-thinning ability. Steady-state flow, three interval thixotropy shear test (3ITT) and oscillatory measurements were conducted to study the effect of EC content on viscosity, structure rebuilding and viscoelastic properties of electrode pastes. Increasing EC polymer is not the best way to prevent the layer printed from laying down.
Preparation of Sub-micron Spherical Silver Powders for Solar Cell Paste

Abstract:Using ascorbic acid as a reducing agent, AgNO3 as silver salts and polyethylene glycol 4000(PEG-4000) as dispersant, sub-micron spherical silver powders were prepared by a liquid-phase reduction method. By means of the orthogonal design of three factors and three levels, the effects of the following factors on the particles size of silver powders were studied, including the concentration of ascorbic acid, the way of dispersant addition into solution and the pH value of the solution. The optimized preparation conditions of sub-micron spherical silver powders were obtained. The sub-micron spherical silver powders could be synthesized under the conditions of pH=5, AgNO3 concentration of 0.5 mol/L, adding half of the dispersant to the AgNO3 and ascorbic acid solution, C6H8O6 concentration of 0.9 mol/L, PEG-4000/AgNO3 mass ratio of 1.2 and at room temperature. The sub-micron spherical silver powders were characterized by laser particle distribution analyzer, SEM and XRD. The results show that the prepared silver powders are pure, with uniform particle size distribution and spherical shape under optimized experiment conditions. The paste prepared with the obtained silver powders was printed on the silicon, and the square resistance of the sintered film is 0.721 m Omega/square, indicating the electrical property of the prepared silver is qualified for solar cells.

Abstract:In this article, we demonstrate a plasmonic effect of silver nanospheres (Ag NSs) on improving the performance of organic polymer solar cells with a structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS-Ag NPs/poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT):[6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM)/Al. Ag NSs were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method and embedded between the hole transport layer and the active layer forming a mosaic structure. It can be found that the device embedded Ag NSs have the advantages for increasing the optical absorption of the active layer comparing with reference device. As a result, the power conversion efficiency of the optimal device reaches 2.71%, permitting a 33% improvement. Furthermore, the benefit in the OSCs owing to the introduction of Ag NSs plasmonic for the excitons generation and dissociation, for better balanced carrier collection, and improving the conductivity of buffer layer were also investigated.

Abstract:Conductive paste is a composite material comprising a conductive filler and an organic vehicle. Compared with the traditional lead tin solder, conductive silver paste does not contain toxic metal lead and is more environmentally friendly. Its preparation process is more straightforward, and it can be applied to materials that cannot be soldered, which provides unique advantages. The filler mainly determines the conductive properties of the paste, and many studies have been conducted on the conductive filler. Further, the organic vehicle affects various factors of the paste such as the printing performance and mechanical properties; therefore, research on organic vehicles is extremely important. Organic vehicles usually contain resins, solvents, and additives. This review summarizes the influence of organic vehicles on diverse characteristics of conductive pastes, such as printability and electrical conductivity. Fully consideration of resin type, molecular weight, selection of solvents, and use of additives will be beneficial to the development of conductive pastes with excellent performance. The incorporation of conductive polymers can improve the tensile and bending resistance of conductive paste. More environmentally friendly and harmless materials will be used in organic carriers in the future.

Abstract:The present work critically investigates the influence of low melting glasses on the fabrication of metal contacts, with the goal of advancing applications of bismuth based oxide glass and screen printed silver contacts for use in integrated circuits (ICs), solar cells, and sensors. In this study, novel electrode contacts were fabricated by screen printing composite pastes composed of mainly silver powder, Bi2O3 glass powder, and acyclic binder, and then firing the pastes in a belt furnace. The microstructures of the composite films after firing at 830 to 890 {\deg}C were observed under different corrosion conditions, and the resulting layers were analyzed with X ray diffraction (XRD) and the transfer length method (TLM). A series of investigations to determine the influence of Bi2O3 glass in silver paste involved various tests, including differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe X ray microanalysis (EPMA), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), to determine the effects of Bi2O3 mixed with silver and the efficacy of the resulting metal contacts in IC fabrications. It was observed that the additive, Bi2O3 glass, controlled the melting of the silver into the glass, influencing the precipitation of Ag crystallites. In addition, an increase in the firing temperature caused excessive growth of Ag crystallites and current leakage, and the size and the relationship of the Ag crystallites in the Bi2O3 glass were confirmed.

Abstract:A tailored large-size plasmonic core-protuberances silver particle with unique optical properties with promising applications in thin-film solar cells was numerically and experimentally studied. The designed particle possesses an extremely enhanced electromagnetic near-field excited by localized surface plasmons resonance and its far field angular plots of light scattering power indicated an enhanced back-scattering ability. When embedded the lumpy particles into the rear of thin-film amorphous silicon solar cells, light trapping in broad wavelength range and ideal short circuit density of the cells increased. A simple one-step reaction was established to acquire the structured particles. The strengthening backward scattering capacity in a broadband light region was also verified experimentally.

Abstract:Superfine silver powders are building blocks of silver paste, which plays a vital role as a conductive material in solar cells. The conductivity of silver paste is greatly affected by the shape, size, and homogeneity of silver powders. In this paper, superfine spherical silver powders with good sphericity and smooth surfaces were prepared by using the non-wetting effect of the liquid/solid interface. Hexagonal boron nitride and magnesium oxide were chosen as dispersants for the preparation of the silver powders. Hexagonal boron nitride with low surface energy was beneficial for the sphericity of the silver powders, and magnesium oxide with high density and hardness was beneficial for their size distribution. The result of scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed the powders prepared via the non-wetting effect of the liquid/solid interface exhibited better sphericity and smoother surfaces than powders prepared by the liquid phase chemical reduction method, which is by far the most commonly used method. The size distribution of silver powders using magnesium oxide as dispersant was 0.2—2.4 µ m, which meets the requirements of solar cells. After sintering at 500°C, the sheet resistance of the silver film was as low as 12.71 mΩ/sq, implying good electrical conductivity.

Abstract:Silver paste is widely used for low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) electrodes. In this work, a kind of LTCC silver paste for fine-line screen-printing was developed by considering the effect of the organic vehicle on rheological behavior and screen-printing properties. A step-by-step volatilization mode was applied to screen the mixed organic solvent of α-terpineol, 2-(2-butoxyethoxy) ethyl acetate (BCA) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). The α-terpineol:BCA:DBP ratio of 5:2:3 is selected by considering the volatility, viscosity, and pseudoplasticity of the organic vehicle. Both viscosity and pseudoplasticity of shear-thinning increase with the increase of ethyl cellulose (EC) organic binder content. Three interval thixotropy test (3ITT) was conducted to discuss the thixotropy of silver paste. The minimum printing line width of 13.27 μm is obtained using silver paste with 10 wt% EC, confirming that the homemade paste has good printability.

Abstract:In this study, the effects of Si/Pb ratio of Pb–Te–Si–O glasses on the electrical performance of multicrystalline Si solar cells were investigated. We first studied the relationship between the properties of glass frit (such as transition temperature (Tg), crystallization tendency, and aggressiveness) and the Si/Pb ratios. Then, the influence of glass frit Tg on the structure of the contact interface, quality of ohmic contacts, and solar cell electrical performance was investigated. The results showed that the cell based on glass frit produced at moderately low Tg, had smaller series resistance and higher photoelectric conversion efficiency than those based on lower Tg and higher Tg glass frits. The optimal glass frit Tg was 289.6 °C; glass frits can form dense and thick films, which can reduce the bulk resistance of the grid line. At the same time, glass frits can reduce the Ag crystallite size to prevent high junction leakage and shunting of shallow emitters, and probably increase the concentration of Ag crystallites and Ag colloids to help tunnel the thinner glass layer. This led to formation of good ohmic contacts and conductive chains. All these features contributed to reach the best values of photoelectric conversion efficiency (18.628%) and series resistance (0.0019 Ω).

Abstract:Low-temperature sintered conductive silver paste has become increasingly popular in the rapidly advancing field of printed circuits, solar panels, and integrated electronics. In order to fully utilize the high activity of silver powder to achieve better performance, more than traditional silver paste solvent is required. In this paper, 1-hexanol was used to gradually replace the commonly used solvents 2-(2-Butoxyethoxy) ethyl acetate (DGBA) and terpineol in the silver paste formulation. The thermal and rheology tests were carried out on the organics and pastes, prepared by mixing organics with silver particles. The volatilization rate and thermogravimetric by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC-TG) curves verified the ability of 1-hexanol to reduce the volatilization temperature and raise the volatilization rate while maintaining the printing properties proofed by rheology tests. The thermal and printing properties of the silver paste prepared with 1-hexanol and the electrical properties and microstructure after sintering is then verified. The silver paste C prepared with 1-hexanol could achieve a low resistivity below 200 °C that is sintered at 175 °C with a resistivity of (4.2 ± 0.8) × 10 −5 Ω cm and sintered at 250 °C reached (6.4 ± 0.7) × 10 −6 Ω cm.
