Abstract:The most promising concepts for power and particle control in tokamaks and other fusion experiments rely upon atomic processes to transfer the power and momentum from the edge plasma tothe plasma facing components. This places new emphasis on atomic processes for low temperature (1–200 eV) and high density (1020–1022 m−3) conditions. The most important atomic processes are impurity and hydrogen radiation, ionization, excitation, recombination, charge excange, radiation transport, molecular collisions, and elastic scattering of atoms, molecules and ions. New developments have occurred in each of these areas. The best available data for these processes and an assessment of their role in plasma wall interactions are summarized, and the major areas where improved data are needed are reviewed.

Abstract:The safe and economical operation of any nuclear power system relies, to a great extent, on the success of the fuel and the materials of construction (Allen et al., 2010). Distinct from conventional power generation methods, a nuclear reactor is characterized by a harsh level of irradiation, very high operating temperature, and extremely corrosive environments. The behavior of fuels and materials as well as systems for fission reactors is thus complex due to the changes that the extreme environments generate on them. These kinds of changes may be seldom seen in other engineering disciplines, but this poses demanding requirements over reactor fuels, materials and systems. The design of reactor fuels, materials and systems subject to extreme environments is a major obstacle to enhancing reactor safety and economic performance of nuclear power systems. It is also essential in increasing innovation for current reactor operation improvement and future reactor design optimization. To address the challenges related to extreme reactor environments, the team of editors organizes the Research Topic "Reactor Fuels, Materials and Systems under Extreme Environments" in the journal Frontiers in Energy Research. Finally, 28 articles are collected, covering the theoretical, numerical and experimental studies on reactor fuels, materials and systems under extreme environments.

Abstract:Pulsed power driven high energy density physics is of very importance for inertial confinement fusion, dynamic characteristics studies of material, fusion energy and so on. Researches on pulsed-power-driven high energy density physics have been conducted more the three decades in China. In the paper a brief review of these researches will be presented. Main content will be emphasized on recent progress conducted on PTS. Future plan on new pulsed power driver for higher energy density physics will be also proposed.

Abstract:Molecules containing short-lived, radioactive nuclei are uniquely positioned to enable a wide range of scientific discoveries in the areas of fundamental symmetries, astrophysics, nuclear structure, and chemistry. Recent advances in the ability to create, cool, and control complex molecules down to the quantum level, along with recent and upcoming advances in radioactive species production at several facilities around the world, create a compelling opportunity to coordinate and combine these efforts to bring precision measurement and control to molecules containing extreme nuclei. In this manuscript, we review the scientific case for studying radioactive molecules, discuss recent atomic, molecular, nuclear, astrophysical, and chemical advances which provide the foundation for their study, describe the facilities where these species are and will be produced, and provide an outlook for the future of this nascent field.

Abstract:Current status and challenges of key physics related to high-confinement operational scenarios and energetic particle confinement are briefly reviewed from the perspective of design and operation of tokamak- based fusion reactors. In the past few decades, significant progress has been made in the research on high- confinement mode physics, i.e. the main stability and confinement constraints on operational window of a fusion reactor have been identified, and some control methods for adjusting plasma kinetic profiles to optimize performance have been developed. Several operational scenarios, including inductive, hybrid and steady-state etc, , which are potentially applicable for future reactors, have been developed. In the conditions that fusion alpha particle self-heating is predominant and shear Alfv & eacute;n wave (SAW) instabilities potentially dominate fusion alpha particle transport, the SAW linear stability properties and excitation mechanisms are understood in depth, and the SAW instabilities nonlinear saturation, alpha particle confinement, and the influence of the heating deposition and the micro-turbulence regulation on fusion profile are under extensive investigation. The magnetically confined fusion research has entered a new stage of ignition and burning plasma physics, and new challenges that are faced are addressed, including whether efficient self-heating of plasmas by fusion alpha particles can be achieved, how the plasma stability and high-confinement can be maintained through the active control of key plasma profiles under the condition of dominant alpha particle heating, and whether it is possible to establish accurate models to predict long time scale complex dynamical evolution of fusion plasmas etc. . Solving these key problems will lay a solid scientific foundation for designing and operating future fusion reactors as well as promote the development of plasma science.

Abstract:Fusion energy is a promising, safe, and reliable green energy solution to the increasing energy demand. However, there are several materials challenges that need to be overcome to increase the technical readiness to a level that enables a fusion pilot plant on the grid. This focus issue aims to identify and address a set of such key impediments for realizing deuterium-tritium (D–T) fusion power in a tokamak reactor and highlight the most recent progress on those research frontiers. The main emphasis of this collection is on materials development challenges resulting from helium irradiation, neutron-induced degradation, thermomechanical loading, and the corrosive environment faced by the divertor and first-wall materials, commonly known as plasma-facing components, and blanket systems for tokamak fusion reactors.

Abstract:Nuclear fusion reactions are the most important processes in nature to power stars and produce new elements, and lie at the center of the understanding of nucleosynthesis in the universe. It is critically important to study the reactions in full plasma environments that are close to true astrophysical conditions. By using laser-driven counter-streaming collisionless plasmas, we studied the fusion D$+$D$\rightarrow n +^3$He in a Gamow-like window around 27 keV. The results show that astrophysical nuclear reaction yield can be modulated significantly by the self-generated electromagnetic fields and the collective motion of the plasma. This plasma-version mini-collider may provide a novel tool for studies of astrophysics-interested nuclear reactions in plasma with tunable energies in earth-based laboratories.

Electron-ion collision and polarization of X-ray fluorescence radiation under hot quantum plasma conditions

Abstract:In the current article, the spectral properties and electron collision (total and magnetic) excitation cross sections of ions taking placed in quantum plasmas are investigated. These cross sections are further used to study the polarization and angular distribution characteristics of the de-excitation radiation X-ray spectra, which play an important role in basic theoretical research, the diagnosis of the plasma environment, and the design of optical devices. To do so, a distorted wave method within the relativistic Dirac-Coulomb atomic structure scheme is suggested. The effective interaction potential between electrons and particles in hot quantum plasmas in the method is determined using a quantum approach that incorporates the influence of effective plasma screening effects caused by collective plasma oscillations. This potential replaces the traditional Coulomb interaction potential and is used in solving the modified Dirac equation to obtain the bound and continuum electron wave functions. Higher-order relativistic effects, such as the Breit interaction and the dominant quantum electrodynamics corrections, are added to enhance the accuracy of the method. Detailed calculations for the relativistic atomic structure and collision excitation dynamics process are carried out, taking the highly stripped H-like O7+ ion of astrophysical importance as an illustrative example. Detailed investigations are also conducted on the variation of energies, collision cross sections, and fluorescence polarizations as functions of the plasma parameters. Our results suggest that the joint effects of shielding and plasma coupling lead the energies, cross sections and fluorescence polarizations decrease (compared with the isolated case). The angular distribution of the X-ray fluorescence emission shows large change, suggesting their sensitivity to these effects. This study not only offers a valuable approach to investigating the plasma shielding and plasmon coupling effects in quantum plasmas but also holds significant relevance for applications in controlled nuclear fusion, astrophysical plasmas and so on.

Abstract:Although the energies associated with nuclear reactions are due primarily to interactions involving nuclear forces, the rates and probabilities associated with those reactions are effectively governed by electromagnetic forces. Charges in the local environment can modulate the Coulomb barrier, and thereby change the rates of nuclear processes. Experiments are presented in which low-temperature electrons are attached to high-density rotating neutrals to form negative ions. The steady-state quiescent rotating plasma generated here lends itself to first prove the principle that low temperature systems can yield MeV fusion particles. It allows the use of high density of neutrals interacting with the wall to yield gain greater than unity. It also demonstrates that instabilities can be avoided with high neutral densities. Collective dynamic interactions within this steady-state quiescent plasma result in an arrangement of negative charges that lowers the effective Coulomb barrier to nuclear reactions at a solid wall of reactants. MeV alpha particles are synchronously observed with externally imposed pulses as evidence of fusion being enabled by Coulomb fields. Impacts on fusion, the source of energy in the universe, will be discussed.

Abstract:With the development of ultra-fast and ultra-strong laser technology,the interaction between light and matters in the strong-field regime has been extensively studied. At the same time,the rapid development of spatial light modulation technology in classic optics provides a new degree of freedom for optical manipulation. In recent years,the combination between these two different fields,namely,driving the intense-laser-matter interaction by the spatially structured light fields,has become one of the research hotspots in strong-field science. Strong-field ionization and high-order harmonic generation are two fundamental and important physical processes in traditional strong-field community. Here,the effect of optical vortex beams in strong-field ionization and its related research progress are first introduced. Then, the latest works of gas high-order harmonic generation driven by vortex beams or cylindrical vector beams in the past decade are introduced. At last,we look ahead to the prospects of intense spatially structured laser fields in strong-field physics.

Abstract:The interaction of ultrafast laser pulses of relativistic intensity with high aspect ratio nanostructures can efficiently and volumetrically heat matter to an ultra-high-energy-density regime encountered in the center of stars and within the core of fusion capsules compressed by the world’s largest lasers. It also generates gigantic quasi-static electromagnetic fields that accelerate particles to very high energy. Here, we present an overview of the physics and applications of these dense relativistic plasmas that can be created with pulses of relatively modest energy from lasers that can operate at a high repetition rate. Recent nanowire array experiments produced near-solid density plasmas with an extreme degree of ionization (e.g., Au +72 ), converted ultrafast pulses of laser light into intense x-ray flashes with record efficiency, and accelerated ions to MeV energies, efficiently driving micro-scale fusion reactions that generate flashes of quasi-monoenergetic neutrons. These plasmas also serve as a platform for advancing the understanding of atomic processes in extreme environments and open a new pathway to laser-driven fusion energy. The irradiation of nanostructures at intensities of >1×10 22 Wcm −2 is predicted to lead to an extreme ultra-high energy density plasma regime characterized by terabar pressures that is virtually unexplored.

Large-Angle Collisions in Burning Plasmas of Inertial Confinement Fusions

Abstract:A recent neutron analysis of experiments conducted at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has revealed deviations from the Maxwellian distributions in the ion relative kinetic energy of burning plasmas, with the surprising emergence of supra-thermal deuterium and tritium (DT) ions that fall outside the predictions of macroscopic statistical hydrodynamic models. Our hybrid-particle-in-cell simulations, incorporating the newly-developed model of large-angle collisions, suggest this could be attributed to the increased significance of large-angle collisions among DT ions and $\alpha$-particles in the burning plasma. Extensive investigations into the implications of large-angle collisions in the burning plasma have yield several key findings, including an ignition moment promotion by $\sim 10\, {\rm ps}$, the presence of supra-thermal ions below an energy threshold, and a hotspot expansion rate about six times faster than expected. Furthermore, we have established the congruency between the NIF neutron spectral moment analysis and our simulations. Our researches on large-angle collisions in burning plasmas offer new insights for experiment interpretation and update our understanding for new designs of inertial confinement fusions.
