Abstract:Entanglement between distant massive mechanical oscillators is of particular interest in quantum -enabled devices due to its potential applications in distributed quantum information processing. Here we propose how to achieve nonreciprocal remote entanglement between two spatially separated mechanical oscillators within a cascaded optomechanical configuration, where the two optomechanical resonators are indirectly coupled through a telecommunication fiber. We show that by selectively spinning the optome-chanical resonators, one can break the time-reversal symmetry of this compound system via the Sagnac effect, and more excitingly, enhance the indirect couplings between the mechanical oscillators via the indi-vidual optimizations of light-motion interaction in each optomechanical resonator. This ability allows us to generate and manipulate nonreciprocal entanglement between distant mechanical oscillators, that is, entanglement can be achieved only through driving the system from one specific input direction but not the other. Moreover, in the case of two frequency-mismatched mechanical oscillators, it is also found that the degree of the generated nonreciprocal entanglement is counterintuitively enhanced in comparison with its reciprocal counterparts, which are otherwise unattainable in static cascaded systems with a single-tone driving laser. Our work, which is well within the feasibility of current experimental capabilities, pro-vides an enticing opportunity to explore the nonclassical correlations between distant massive objects and facilitates a variety of emerging quantum technologies ranging from quantum information processing to quantum sensing.
Coherent Signal Amplification in Bistable Nanomechanical Oscillators by Stochastic Resonance

Abstract:Stochastic resonance is a counter-intuitive concept[1,2], ; the addition of noise to a noisy system induces coherent amplification of its response. First suggested as a mechanism for the cyclic recurrence of ice ages, stochastic resonance has been seen in a wide variety of macroscopic physical systems: bistable ring lasers[3], SQUIDs[4,5], magnetoelastic ribbons[6], and neurophysiological systems such as the receptors in crickets[7] and crayfish[8]. Although it is fundamentally important as a mechanism of coherent signal amplification, stochastic resonance is yet to be observed in nanoscale systems. Here we report the observation of stochastic resonance in bistable nanomechanical silicon oscillators, which can play an important role in the realization of controllable high-speed nanomechanical memory cells. Our nanomechanical systems were excited into a dynamic bistable state and modulated in order to induce controllable switching; the addition of white noise showed a marked amplification of the signal strength. Stochastic resonance in nanomechanical systems paves the way for exploring macroscopic quantum coherence and tunneling, and controlling nanoscale quantum systems for their eventual use as robust quantum logic devices.

Diffusion-induced bistability of driven nanomechanical resonators

Abstract:We study nanomechanical resonators with frequency fluctuations due to diffusion of absorbed particles. The diffusion depends on the vibration amplitude through inertial effect. We find that, if the diffusion coefficient is sufficiently large, the resonator response to periodic driving displays bistability. The lifetime of the coexisting vibrational states scales exponentially with the diffusion coefficient. It also displays a characteristic scaling dependence on the distance to bifurcation points.

Abstract:The authors experimentally study stochastic resonance in a nonlinear bistable nanomechanical doubly clamped beam resonator, which is capacitively excited by an adjacent gate electrode. The resonator is tuned to its bistability region by an intense pump near a point of equal transition rates between its two metastable states. The pump is amplitude modulated, inducing modulation of the activation barrier between the states. When noise is added to the excitation, resonator’s displacement exhibits noise dependent amplification of the modulation signal. They measure resonator’s response in the time and frequency domains, the spectral amplification, and the statistical distribution of the jump time.

Abstract:We study Poisson-noise induced switching between coexisting vibrational states in driven nonlinear micromechanical resonators. In contrast to Gaussian noise induced switching, the measured logarithm of the switching rate is proportional not to the reciprocal noise intensity, but to its logarithm, for fixed pulse area. We also find that the switching rate logarithm varies as a square root of the distance to the bifurcation point, instead of the conventional scaling with exponent 3/2.

Abstract:We present infrared spectroscopy of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi, obtained 11.81, 20.75 and 55.71 days following its 2006 eruption. The spectra are dominated by hydrogen recombination lines, together with HeI, OI and OII lines; the electron temperature of ~10^4 K implied by the recombination spectrum suggests that we are seeing primarily the wind of the red giant, ionized by the ultraviolet flash when RS Oph erupted. However, strong coronal emission lines (i.e. emission from fine structure transitions in ions having high ionization potential) are present in the last spectrum. These imply a temperature of 930000K for the coronal gas; this is in line with x-ray observations of the 2006 eruption. The emission line widths decrease with time in a way that is consistent with the shock model for the x-ray emission.

Abstract:Nanomechanical resonator arrays constitute a promising platform for topological physics and integrated acoustic devices. However, achieving precise control of the couplings between resonators has been a significant challenge for realizing a time-dependent Hamiltonian. In this work, we address this challenge by designing the geometric parameters of the resonators, enabling us to achieve dynamical control over the coupling strength and frequency stability. Our scalable resonator array allows for the dynamic control of coupling strengths between every individual resonator pair, ranging from zero to more than 20 times the dissipation rate. Moreover, we demonstrate Rabi-like oscillations with real-time-varying Rabi frequencies. Characteristics of coexisting attractors and ghost orbiting in an optomechanical microresonator

Abstract:We explore the nonlinear interactions of an optomechanical microresonator driven by two external optical signals. Optical whispering-gallery waves are coupled to acoustic surface waves of a fused silica medium in the equatorial plane of a generic microresonator. The system exhibits coexisting attractors whose behaviors include limit cycles, steady states, tori, quasi-chaos, and fully developed chaos with ghost orbits of a known attractor. Bifurcation diagrams demonstrate the existence of self-similarity, periodic windows, and coexisting attractors and show high-density lines within chaos that suggests a potential ghost orbit. In addition, the Lyapunov spectral components as a function of control parameter illuminate the dynamic nature of attractors and periodic windows with symmetric and asymmetric formations, their domains of existence, their bifurcations, and other nonlinear effects. We show that the power-shift method can access accurately and efficiently attractors in the optomechanical system as it does in other nonlinear systems. To test whether the ghost orbit is the link between two attractors interrupted by chaos, we examine the elements of the bifurcation diagrams as a function of control parameter. We also use detuning as a second control parameter to avoid the chaotic region and clarify that the two attractors are one.

However, even though it has been predicted theoretically for several decades, the experimental realization of phase self-oscillation, sometimes called phase trapping, in the high driving regime has been studied only recently. We explored in detail the phase dynamics in a synchronized field emission SiC nanoelectromechanical system with intrinsic feedback. A richer variety of phase behavior has been unambiguously identified, implying phase modulation and inertia. Stochastic switching and squeeze of hysteresis window in nonlinear responses of silicon nitride membrane nanoelectromechanical resonators

Abstract:In this work, we present the effects of stochastic force generated by white noise on the nonlinear dynamics of a circular silicon nitride membrane. By tuning the membrane to the Duffing nonlinear region, detected signals switching between low- and high- amplitudes have been observed. They are generated by noise-assisted random jumps between bistable states at room temperature and exhibit high sensitivity to the driving frequency. Through artificially heating different mechanical vibration modes by external input of white noise, the switching rate exhibits exponential dependence on the effective temperature and follows with Kramer's law. Furthermore, both the measured switching rate and activation energy exhibit sensitivity to the width of the hysteresis window in nonlinear response and the driving force, which is in qualitative agreement with the theoretical descriptions. Besides, white noise-induced hysteresis window squeezing and bifurcation point shifting have also been observed, which are attributed to the stochastic force modulation of the spring constant of the membrane. These studies are essential for the generation and manipulation of stochastic switching effects, paving the way to explore new functions based on probability distributions in nanomechanical resonators.

Abstract:Mechanical resonators that possess coupled modes with harmonic frequency relations have recently sparked interest due to their suitability for controllable energy transfer and non-Hermitian dynamics. Here, we show coupling between high Q-factor ($>\!\!10^4$) resonances with a nearly 1:1 frequency relation in spatially-symmetric microresonators. We develop and demonstrate a method to analyze their dynamical behavior based on the simultaneous and resonant detection of both spectral peaks, and validate this with experimental results. The frequency difference between the peaks modulates their ringdown, and creates a beat pattern in the linear decay. This method applies both to the externally driven and the Brownian motion (thermal) regime, and allows characterization of both linear and nonlinear parameters. The mechanism behind this method renders it broadly applicable to both optical and electrical readout, as well as to different mechanical systems. This will aid studies using near-degenerate mechanical modes, for e.g., optomechanical energy transfer, synchronization and gyroscopic sensors.

Abstract:Synchronization of electrical oscillators is a crucial step toward practical implementation of oscillator-based and bio-inspired computing. Here, we report the emergence of an unusual stochastic pattern in coupled spiking Mott nanodevices. Although a moderate capacitive coupling results in a deterministic alternating spiking, increasing the coupling strength leads counterintuitively to stochastic disruptions of the alternating spiking sequence. The disruptions of the deterministic spiking sequence are a direct consequence of the small intrinsic stochasticity in electrical triggering of the insulator–metal transition. Although the stochasticity is subtle in individual nanodevices, it becomes dramatically enhanced just in a single pair of coupled oscillators and, thus, dominates the synchronization. This is different from the stochasticity and multimodal coupling, appearing due to collective effects in large oscillator networks. The stochastic spiking pattern in Mott nanodevices results in a discrete inter-spike interval distribution resembling those in biological neurons. Our results advance the understanding of the emergent synchronization properties in spiking oscillators and provide a platform for hardware-level implementation of probabilistic computing and biologically plausible electronic devices.

Abstract:The quest to develop workable electromechanical mechanisms in the nanoscale has often been predicated on meeting the conditions of super-low damping. We show here that the use of periodic forces to drive sliding core/shell double-walled carbon nanotube architectures produces oscillating-displacement response characteristics that are far more complex than cantilever-based designs, which suggest that meeting the conditions of controllability is much more pertinent for such architectures. Knowledge of these characteristics is necessary to successfully create sliding core/shell oscillator architectures that are capable of operating at gigahertz frequencies. Abstract:In the present paper, we study the optical bistability in a hybrid optomechanical system made of two coupled cavities, which consists of an optical cavity and a mechanical oscillator containing semiconductor quantum dot molecules. By solving the Heisenberg–Langevin equations of motion for the system in the steady state limit, we obtain an expression for the cavity photon number, which indicates the existence of optical bistability phenomenon in the proposed double-cavity optomechanical system. The impact of effectual physical parameters of the system on the bistable behavior is studied and discussed. It is shown that the threshold and the hysteresis loop of the optical bistability curves can be controlled and modulated by varying the relevant key parameters such as the frequency detuning, the coupling strength of cavities, the optical decay rate, and the tunneling strength in the quantum dot molecules. As a consequence, however, by proper adjustment of the coupling strength of the two cavities and the detuning, the domain of the bistable region changed which can be utilized for designing and optimizing sensitive all-optical switching and optical sensors.

Noise Suppression of On-Chip Mechanical Resonators by Chaotic Coherent Feedback

Abstract:We propose a method to decouple the nanomechanical resonator in optomechanical systems from the environmental noise by introducing a chaotic coherent feedback loop. We find that the chaotic controller in the feedback loop can modulate the dynamics of the controlled optomechanical system and induce a broadband response of the mechanical mode. This broadband response of the mechanical mode will cut off the coupling between the mechanical mode and the environment and thus suppress the environmental noise of the mechanical modes. As an application, we use the protected optomechanical system to act as a quantum memory. It's shown that the noise-decoupled optomechanical quantum memory is efficient for storing information transferred from coherent or squeezed light.
Complex switching dynamics of interacting light in a ring resonator

Abstract:Microresonators are micron-scale optical systems that confine light using total internal reflection. These optical systems have gained interest in the last two decades due to their compact sizes, unprecedented measurement capabilities, and widespread applications. The increasingly high finesse (or $Q$ factor) of such resonators means that nonlinear effects are unavoidable even for low power, making them attractive for nonlinear applications, including optical comb generation and second harmonic generation. In addition, light in these nonlinear resonators may exhibit chaotic behavior across wide parameter regions. Hence, it is necessary to understand how, where, and what types of such chaotic dynamics occur before they can be used in practical devices. We consider a pair of coupled differential equations that describes the interactions of two optical beams in a single-mode resonator with symmetric pumping. Recently, it was shown that this system exhibits a wide range of fascinating behaviors, including bistability, symmetry breaking, chaos, and self-switching oscillations. We employ here a dynamical system approach to identify, delimit, and explain the regions where such different behaviors can be observed. Specifically, we find that different kinds of self-switching oscillations are created via the collision of a pair of asymmetric periodic orbits or chaotic attractors at Shilnikov homoclinic bifurcations, which acts as a gluing bifurcation. We present a bifurcation diagram that shows how these global bifurcations are organized by a Belyakov transition point (where the stability of the homoclinic orbit changes). In this way, we map out distinct transitions to different chaotic switching behavior that should be expected from this optical device.

Abstract:The motion of a vibrating object is determined by the way it is held. This simple observation has long inspired string instrument makers to create new sounds by devising elegant string clamping mechanisms, whereby the distance between the clamping points is modulated as the string vibrates. At the nanoscale, the simplest way to emulate this principle would be to controllably make nanoresonators slide across their clamping points, which would effectively modulate their vibrating length. Here, we report measurements of flexural vibrations in nanomechanical resonators that reveal such a sliding motion. Surprisingly, the resonant frequency of vibrations draws a loop as a tuning gate voltage is cycled. This behavior indicates that sliding is accompanied by a delayed frequency response of the resonators, making their dynamics richer than that of resonators with fixed clamping points. Our work elucidates the dynamics of nanomechanical resonators with unconventional boundary conditions, and offers opportunities for studying friction at the nanoscale from resonant frequency measurements.

Abstract:Optical nonlinearities, such as thermo-optic mechanisms and free-carrier dispersion, are often considered unwelcome effects in silicon-based resonators and, more specifically, optomechanical cavities, since they affect, for instance, the relative detuning between an optical resonance and the excitation laser. Here, we exploit these nonlinearities and their intercoupling with the mechanical degrees of freedom of a silicon optomechanical nanobeam to unveil a rich set of fundamentally different complex dynamics. By smoothly changing the parameters of the excitation laser we demonstrate accurate control to activate two- and four-dimensional limit cycles, a period-doubling route and a six-dimensional chaos. In addition, by scanning the laser parameters in opposite senses we demonstrate bistability and hysteresis between two- and four-dimensional limit cycles, between different coherent mechanical states and between four-dimensional limit cycles and chaos. Our findings open new routes towards exploiting silicon-based optomechanical photonic crystals as a versatile building block to be used in neurocomputational networks and for chaos-based applications.

Two-Level System Nanomechanics in the Blue-Detuned Regime

Abstract:We study a mechanical oscillator coupled to a two-level system driven by a blue-detuned coherent source in the resolved sideband regime. For weak mechanical damping, we find dynamical instabilities leading to limit cycles. They are signaled by strong fluctuations in the number of emitted photons, with a large Fano factor. The phonon-number fluctuations exhibit a strikingly similar behavior. When the coupling strength becomes comparable to the mechanical frequency, non-classical mechanical states appear. We discuss the relation with cavity optomechanical systems. Candidates for observing these effects include superconducting qubits, NV centers, and single molecules coupled to oscillators.
