Abstract:In connection with a recent experiment [Russo {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 95}, 027002 (2005)], we investigate the effect of weak localization on non local transport in normal metal / insulator / superconductor / insulator / normal metal (NISIN) trilayers, with extended interfaces. The negative weak localization contribution to the crossed resistance can exceed in absolute value the positive elastic cotunneling contribution if the normal metal phase coherence length or the energy are large enough.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to understand the influence of weak localization on non - local transport in the normal - metal/insulator/superconductor/insulator/normal - metal (NISIN) sandwich structure. Specifically, the article explores how weak localization affects the cross - resistance and explains why the experimentally observed cross - conductivity is not zero, which is inconsistent with the results predicted by the lowest - order perturbation theory.
### Main problem analysis
1. **Explanation of experimental phenomena**:
- The cross - conductivity observed in the experiment is not averaged to zero as predicted by the lowest - order perturbation theory.
- Applying a magnetic field parallel to the interface suppresses the non - local signal, indicating that this is a phase - coherent process.
- As the bias voltage \( V_b \) increases, the sign of the cross - resistance changes from positive (the sign of elastic co - tunneling) to negative (the sign of crossed Andreev reflection), and when the bias voltage exceeds the Thouless energy in the superconductor, the cross - signal disappears.
2. **Contribution of weak localization**:
- The article shows that weak localization with an extended interface leads to a positive cross - conductivity, whose sign is opposite to that of the elastic co - tunneling channel dominated by the localized interface.
- The contribution of weak localization to cross - conductivity becomes important at large bias voltages and large phase - coherent lengths in normal metals.
### Summary of mathematical formulas
- The expression for cross - conductivity is:
\[
G_{a,b}(V_b)=-\frac{8\pi^2 e^2}{h t^4}\sum_{j,k,l}\text{Tr}\left\{\hat{\rho}_{Nai,aj}\hat{\sigma}_3\hat{G}^A_{\alpha_j,\beta_k}(eV_b)\hat{\rho}_{Nbk,bl}\hat{\sigma}_3\hat{G}^R_{\beta_l,\alpha_i}(eV_b)\right\}
\]
- The cross - conductivity of weak - localization contribution is:
\[
G^{(wl)}_{a,b}(eV_b)=-G^{(ec)}_{a,b}(V_b)F\left(\frac{d}{\xi},\frac{V_b}{\Delta},\frac{l^{(N)}_\phi}{l^{(N)}_e}\right)
\]
where,
\[
F\left(\frac{d}{\xi},\frac{V_b}{\Delta},\frac{l^{(N)}_\phi}{l^{(N)}_e}\right)=\frac{1}{4T^2}\left(\frac{l^{(N)}_\phi}{l^{(N)}_e}\right)^4\left(\frac{\xi}{l^{(S)}_e}\right)\frac{\Delta^2}{\Delta^2-(eV_b)^2}\exp\left[-\left(\frac{2d}{\xi}\right)\right]
\]
Through these analyses, the article reveals the important role of weak localization in the NISIN sandwich structure and explains the non - local transport phenomena observed in the experiment.
