Abstract:We present a spectral-theoretic approach to time-average statistical mechanics for general, non-equilibrium initial conditions. We consider the statistics of bounded, local additive functionals of reversible as well as irreversible ergodic stochastic dynamics with continuous or discrete state-space. We derive exact results for the mean, fluctuations and correlations of time average observables from the eigenspectrum of the underlying generator of Fokker-Planck or master equation dynamics, and discuss the results from a physical perspective. Feynman-Kac formulas are re-derived using Itô calculus and combined with non-Hermitian perturbation theory. The emergence of the universal central limit law in a spectral representation is shown explicitly on large deviation time-scales. For reversible dynamics with equilibrated initial conditions we derive a general upper bound to fluctuations of occupation measures in terms of an integral of the return probability. Simple, exactly solvable examples are analyzed to demonstrate how to apply the theory. As a biophysical example we revisit the Berg-Purcell problem on the precision of concentration measurements by a single receptor. Our results are directly applicable to a diverse range of phenomena underpinned by time-average observables and additive functionals in physical, chemical, biological, and economical systems.

Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications

Abstract:This is a survey paper on the recent development of the spectral theory of nonnegative tensors and its applications. After a brief review of the basic definitions on tensors, the H-eigenvalue problem and the Z-eigenvalue problem for tensors are studied separately. To the H-eigenvalue problem for nonnegative tensors, the whole Perron-Frobenius theory for nonnegative matrices is completely extended, while to the Z-eigenvalue problem, there are many distinctions and are studied carefully in details. Numerical methods are also discussed. Three kinds of applications are studied: higher order Markov chains, spectral theory of hypergraphs, and the quantum entanglement. Abstract:The nonlinear Schroedinger model is a prototypical dispersive wave equation that features finite time blowup, either for supercritical exponents (for fixed dimension) or for supercritical dimensions (for fixed nonlinearity exponent). Upon identifying the self-similar solutions in the so-called "co-exploding frame", a dynamical systems analysis of their stability is natural, yet is complicated by the mixed Hamiltonian-dissipative character of the relevant frame. In the present work, we study the spectral picture of the relevant linearized problem. We examine the point spectrum of 3 eigenvalue pairs associated with translation, $U(1)$ and conformal invariances, as well as the continuous spectrum. We find that two eigenvalues become positive, yet are attributed to symmetries and are thus not associated with instabilities. In addition to a vanishing eigenvalue, 3 more are found to be negative and real, while the continuous spectrum is nearly vertical and on the left-half (spectral) plane. Finally, the subtle effects of the boundaries are also assessed and their role in the observed weak eigenvalue oscillations is clarified.

Under certain structural conditions, the authors are able to provide a complete picture of how the nonlinear Schrödinger equations with combined nonlinearities interact in the given energy space. The method used in the paper is based upon the Morawetz estimates and perturbation principles.

Abstract:This is an expository article that describes the spectral-theoretic aspects in the study of the stability of self-similar blowup for nonlinear wave equations. The linearization near a self-similar solution leads to a genuinely nonself-adjoint operator which is difficult to analyze. The main goal of this article is to provide an accessible account to the only known method that is capable of providing sufficient spectral information to complete the stability analysis. The exposition is based on a mini course given at the Summer School on Geometric Dispersive PDEs in Obergurgl, Austria, in September 2022.

Abstract:In this paper we review a number of recent developments in the study of the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation. Results concerning ground and excited states, their construction, stability and bifurcations are presented in one and two spatial dimensions. Combinations of such steady states lead to the study of coherent structure bound states. A special case of such structures are the so-called twisted modes and their two-dimensional discrete vortex generalization. The ideas on such multi-coherent structures and their interactions are also useful in treating finite system effects through the image method. The statistical mechanics of the system is also analyzed and the partition function calculated in one spatial dimension using the transfer integral method. Finally, a number of open problems and future directions in the field are proposed.

Abstract:Spectral properties of Schrödinger operators on compact metric graphs are studied and special emphasis is put on differences in the spectral behavior between different classes of vertex conditions. We survey recent results especially for $\delta$ and $\delta'$ couplings and demonstrate the spectral properties on many examples. Amongst other things, properties of the ground state eigenvalue and eigenfunction and the spectral behavior under various perturbations of the metric graph or the vertex conditions are considered.

Abstract:This survey revolves around the question how the roots of a monic polynomial (resp. the spectral decomposition of a linear operator), whose coefficients depend in a smooth way on parameters, depend on those parameters. The parameter dependence of the polynomials (resp. operators) ranges from real analytic over $C^\infty$ to differentiable of finite order with often drastically different regularity results for the roots (resp. eigenvalues and eigenvectors). Another interesting point is the difference between the perturbation theory of hyperbolic polynomials (where, by definition, all roots are real) and that of general complex polynomials. The subject, which started with Rellich's work in the 1930s, enjoyed sustained interest through time that intensified in the last two decades, bringing some definitive optimal results. Throughout we try to explain the main proof ideas; Rellich's theorem and Bronshtein's theorem on hyperbolic polynomials are presented with full proofs. The survey is written for readers interested in singularity theory but also for those who intend to apply the results in other fields.

The corresponding notion for nonlinear systems is that of spectral submanifolds -- manifolds invariant under the full nonlinear dynamics that are determined by their tangency to spectral subspaces of the linearized system. In light of the recently-emerged interest in their use as tools in model reduction, we propose an extension of the relevant theory to the realm of fluid dynamics. We show the existence of a large (and the most pertinent) subclass of spectral submanifolds and foliations - describing the behaviour of nearby trajectories - about fixed points and periodic orbits of the Navier-Stokes equations. Their uniqueness and smoothness properties are discussed in detail, due to their significance from the perspective of model reduction. The machinery is then put to work via a numerical algorithm developed along the lines of the parameterization method, that computes the desired manifolds as power series expansions. Results are shown within the context of 2D channel flows.

Abstract:This paper gives a survey over some of the most important methods and results of nonlinear functional analysis in ordered Banach spaces. By means of iterative techniques and by using topological tools, fixed point theorems for completely continuous maps in ordered Banach spaces are deduced, and particular attention is paid to the derivation of multiplicity results. Moreover, solvability and bifurcation problems for fixed point equations depending nonlinearly on a real parameter are investigated. In order to demonstrate the importance of the abstract results, there are given some nontrivial applications to nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems. But, of course, the abstract techniques and results of this paper apply also to a variety of other problems which are not considered here. This paper presents in a unified manner most of the recent work in this field. In addition, by making consequent use of the fixed point index for compact maps, short and simple proofs are obtained for most of the classical results contained in M. A. Krasnoselskiis book [11].

Abstract:The contention of this paper is that a spectral method for time-dependent PDEs is basically no more than a choice of an orthonormal basis of the underlying Hilbert space. This choice is governed by a long list of considerations: stability, speed of convergence, geometric numerical integration, fast approximation and efficient linear algebra. We subject different choices of orthonormal bases, focussing on the real line, to these considerations. While nothing is likely to improve upon a Fourier basis in the presence of periodic boundary conditions, the situation is considerably more interesting in other settings. We introduce two kinds of orthonormal bases, T-systems and W-systems, and investigate in detail their features. T-systems are designed to work with Cauchy boundary conditions, while W-systems are suited to zero Dirichlet boundary conditions.

Abstract:We study here class of 1D spectral-meromorphic (s-meromorphic) OD operators $L=\partial_x^n+\sum_{n-2\geq i\geq 0}a_{n-2-i}\partial_x^i$ with meromorphic coefficients $a_j$ near $x\in R$ such that all eigenfunctions $L\psi=\alpha\psi$ are $x$--meromorphic near $x\in R$ for all $\alpha$. Symmetric $s$-meromorphic operators are self-adjoint with respect to indefinite inner product well-defined for some special spaces of singular functions. In particular, all algebraic operators $L$--i.e. operators entering Burchnall-Chaundy-Krichever (BChK) rank one commutative rings -- are s-meromorphic. For KdV system corresponding algebraic operator $L=-\partial_x^2+u(x,t)$ is called singular finite gap, singular soliton or algebrogeometric Schrodinger operator. This special case was already studied by the present authors in the recent works.

Abstract:This work provides a necessary and sufficient condition for a symbolic dynamical system to admit a sequence of periodic approximations in the Hausdorff topology. The key result proved and applied here uses graphs that are called De Bruijn graphs, Rauzy graphs, or Anderson–Putnam complex, depending on the community. Combining this with a previous result, the present work justifies rigorously the accuracy and reliability of algorithmic methods used to compute numerically the spectra of a large class of self-adjoint operators. The so-called Hamiltonians describe the effective dynamic of a quantum particle in aperiodic media. No restrictions on the structure of these operators other than general regularity assumptions are imposed. In particular, nearest-neighbor correlation is not necessary. Examples for the Fibonacci and the Golay–Rudin–Shapiro sequences are explicitly provided illustrating this discussion. While the first sequence has been thoroughly studied by physicists and mathematicians alike, a shroud of mystery still surrounds the latter when it comes to spectral properties. In light of this, the present paper gives a new result here that might help uncovering a solution.

Abstract:The absolutely continuous spectrum of an ergodic family of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators is completely determined by the Lyapunov exponent as shown by Ishii, Kotani and Pastur. Moreover, the part of the theory developed by Kotani gives powerful tools for proving the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum, the presence of absolutely continuous spectrum, and even the presence of purely absolutely continuous spectrum. We review these results and their recent applications to a number of problems: the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum for rough potentials, the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum for potentials defined by the doubling map on the circle, and the absence of singular spectrum for the subcritical almost Mathieu operator.
