Abstract:The introduction of nonlinearities in the Schrödinger equation has been considered in the literature as an effective manner to describe the action of external environments or mean fields. Here, in particular, we explore the nonlinear effects induced by subtracting a term proportional to Bohm's quantum potential to the usual (linear) Schrödinger equation, which generates the so-called "classical" Schrödinger equation. Although a simple nonlinear transformation allows us to recover the well-known classical Hamilton-Jacobi equation, by combining a series of analytical results (in the limiting cases) and simulations (whenever the analytical treatment is unaffordable), we find an analytical explanation to why the dynamics in the nonlinear "classical" regime is still strongly nonclassical. This is even more evident by establishing a one-to-one comparison between the Bohmian trajectories associated with the corresponding wave function and the classical trajectories that one should obtain. Based on these observations, it is clear that the transition to a fully classical regime requires extra conditions in order to remove any trace of coherence, which is the truly distinctive trait of quantum mechanics. This behavior is investigated in three paradigmatic cases, namely, the dispersion of a free propagating localized particle, the harmonic oscillator, and a simplified version of Young's two-slit experiment.

Abstract:A nonlinear extension of Schrödinger's wave equation is proposed that ensures non-signaling by keeping linear the evolution of \textit{coordinate-diagonal} elements of the density matrix. The equation contains a negative kinetic energy term that turns spreading of wave packets into its opposite: collapsing, as some effective mass $M$ grows beyond a universal critical mass, estimated to be about $\mu = 2\cdot10^{-23}~$kg; then linear quantum kinetic energy gets negligible, which marks the quantum-classical border. Interference of large molecules is suggested for an experimental check of the proposed framework.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the time-oscillating critical nonlinear Schrodinger equation iu(t) + Delta u + theta(omega t)vertical bar u vertical bar(4/n-2)u = 0 in R-n (n >= 3), where theta is a periodic function. We show that, for a given initial condition u(0) = phi in H-1, the solution u(omega) converges as vertical bar omega vertical bar -> infinity to the solution U of the limiting equation iU(t) + Delta U + I(theta)vertical bar U vertical bar U4/n-2 = 0 with the same initial condition, where I(theta) is the average of theta. We also show that if the solution U is global and has a certain decay property, then u(omega) is also global if vertical bar omega vertical bar is sufficiently large. Abstract:An enlarged group G of nonlinear transformations, modeled on the general linear group GL(2,R), leads to a beautiful, apparently unremarked symmetry between the wave function's phase and the logarithm of its amplitude. Equations Doebner and I earlier proposed are embedded in a wider, natural family of nonlinear time-evolution equations, on which G acts as a gauge group (leaving physical observations invariant). There exist G-invariant quantities that reduce to the usual probability density and flux for linearizable quantum theories in a particular gauge.

Abstract:Motivated by recent proposals (Bialynicki-Birula, Mycielski; Haag, Bannier; Weinberg; Doebner, Goldin) for nonlinear quantum mechanical evolution equations for pure states some principal difficulties in the framework of usual quantum theory, which is based on its inherent linear structure, are discussed. A generic construction of nonlinear evolution equations through nonlinear gauge transformations is indicated.

Abstract:We consider a wide class of nonlinear canonical quantum systems described by a one-particle Schroedinger equation containing a complex nonlinearity. We introduce a nonlinear unitary transformation which permits us to linearize the continuity equation. In this way we are able to obtain a new quantum system obeying to a nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a real nonlinearity. As an application of this theory we consider a few already studied Schroedinger equations as that containing the nonlinearity introduced by the exclusion-inclusion principle, the Doebner-Goldin equation and others. Abstract:We introduce a particular nonlinear generalization of quantum mechanics which has the property that it is exactly solvable in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian of the usual linear quantum mechanics problem. We hope that this simple example will elucidate some of the issues of interpreting nonlinear generalization of quantum mechanics that have been put forth to resolve questions about quantum measurement theory.

Abstract:We consider the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger-Langevin equation for both signs of the logarithmic nonlinearity. We explicitly compute the dynamics of Gaussian solutions for large times, which is obtained through the study of a particular nonlinear differential equation of order 2. We then give the asymptotic behavior of general energy weak solutions under some regularity assumptions. Some numerical simulations are performed in order to corroborate the theoretical results.

Abstract:Nonlinear Dirac equations (NLDE) are derived through a group N^2 of nonlinear (gauge) transformation acting in the corresponding state space. The construction generalises a construction for nonlinear Schrödinger equations. To relate N^2 with physically motivated principles we assume: locality (i.e. it contains no explicit derivative and no derivatives of the wave function), separability (i.e. it acts on product states componentwise) and Poincaré invariance. Furthermore we want that a positional density is invariant under N^2. Such nonlinear transformations yield NLDE which describe physically equivalent systems. To get 'new' systems, we extend this NLDE (gauge extension) and present a family of NLDE which is a slight nonlinear generalisation of the Dirac equation. We discuss and comment the fact that nonlinear evolutions are not consistent with the usual framework of quantum theory. To develop a corresponding extended framework one needs models for nonlinear evolutions which also indicate possible physical consequences of nonlinearities.

Abstract:This book explores the diverse types of Schrödinger equations that appear in nonlinear systems in general, with a specific focus on nonlinear transmission networks and Bose–Einstein Condensates. In the context of nonlinear transmission networks, it employs various methods to rigorously model the phenomena of modulated matter-wave propagation in the network, leading to nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations. Modeling these phenomena is largely based on the reductive perturbation method, and the derived NLS equations are then used to methodically investigate the dynamics of matter-wave solitons in the network. In the context of Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs), the book analyzes the dynamical properties of NLS equations with the external potential of different types, which govern the dynamics of modulated matter-waves in BECs with either two-body interactions or both two- and three-body interatomic interactions. It also discusses the method of investigating both the well-posedness and the ill-posedness of the boundary problem for linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equations and presents new results. Using simple examples, it then illustrates the results on the boundary problems. For both nonlinear transmission networks and Bose–Einstein condensates, the results obtained are supplemented by numerical calculations and presented as figures.

Abstract:This paper investigates a generalized form of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation characterized by a logarithmic nonlinearity. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation, a fundamental equation in nonlinear wave theory, is applied across various physical systems including nonlinear optics, Bose–Einstein condensates, and fluid dynamics. We specifically explore a logarithmic variant of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation to model complex wave phenomena that conventional polynomial nonlinearities fail to capture. We derive four distinct forms of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with logarithmic nonlinearity and provide exact solutions for each, encompassing bright, dark, and kink-type solitons, as well as a range of periodic solitary waves. Analytical techniques are employed to construct bounded and unbounded traveling wave solutions, and the dynamics of these solutions are analyzed through phase portraits of the associated dynamical systems. These findings extend the scope of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation to more accurately describe wave behaviors in complex media and open avenues for future research into non-standard nonlinear wave equations.

Abstract:The dynamic behavior of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NSE) with an additional high-order Hamiltonian perturbation that displays a nonlinear interaction between Langmuir waves and electrons in plasmas is studied. It is shown that periodic solutions, solitary waves, and recurrence exist, which are also inherent in the cubic NSE. A more important phenomenon, stochasticity, has been found in such a continuum Hamiltonian dynamic system. This phenomenon illustrates that nonintegrability arises from the high-order Hamiltonian perturbation. In addition, our numerical results also show that recurrence, which sensitively depends on initial conditions, is only a special feature of the dynamic system.

Abstract:We recently introduced a particular nonlinear generalization of quantum mechanics which has the property that it is exactly solvable in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian of the usual linear quantum mechanics problem. In this paper we suggest that the two components of the wave function represent the system described by the Hamiltonian H in two different asymptotic regions of spacetime and we show that the non-linear terms can be viewed as giving rise to gravitational effects.

Abstract:The foundations of non-linear quantum mechanics are based on six postulates and five propositions. On a first quantised level, these approaches are built on non-linear differential operators, non-linear eigenvalue equations, and the notion of non-linear observables and non-linear states. The present theory predicts that the non-linear function solution of a non-linear partial differential equation for a free particle is correct and that the commutator of the position operator and the non-linear momentum operator does not commute. Moreover, the implicit wave function of linear quantum mechanics can be determined by a non-linear wave function solution of non-linear partial differential equation, which also verifies the non-linear quantum mechanics.

Time complexity analysis of quantum algorithms via linear representations for nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations

Abstract:We construct quantum algorithms to compute the solution and/or physical observables of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and nonlinear Hamilton-Jacobi equations (HJE) via linear representations or exact mappings between nonlinear ODEs/HJE and linear partial differential equations (the Liouville equation and the Koopman-von Neumann equation). The connection between the linear representations and the original nonlinear system is established through the Dirac delta function or the level set mechanism. We compare the quantum linear systems algorithms based methods and the quantum simulation methods arising from different numerical approximations, including the finite difference discretisations and the Fourier spectral discretisations for the two different linear representations, with the result showing that the quantum simulation methods usually give the best performance in time complexity. We also propose the Schrödinger framework to solve the Liouville equation for the HJE with the Hamiltonian formulation of classical mechanics, since it can be recast as the semiclassical limit of the Wigner transform of the Schrödinger equation. Comparsion between the Schrödinger and the Liouville framework will also be made.

Nonlinear Wave Dynamics: from Lasers to Fluids

Abstract:Nonlinear wave equations are central to the study of nonlinear optics and fluid dynamics. Notably, recent research has shown that solitons can be generated in mode-locked lasers. An interesting application of these lasers is the development of optical clocks which have the potential to be considerably more accurate than atomic clocks. Another important area of research in nonlinear optics is lattice dynamics where localized solitary wave or solitons can be obtained in periodic and irregular lattice systems. In honeycomb lattices, discrete and continuous nonlinear Dirac systems can be derived in certain parameter regimes; the Dirac systems describe conical diffraction, a phenomena observed in recent experiments. In water and internal waves the classical equations are reformulated as a system of coupled equations where the free surface equations are formulated as nonlocal equation and the depth variable is eliminated. These systems reduce to interesting asymptotic equations in suitable limits. A numerical method, termed spectral renormalization, is used to find solitary waves in nonlinear optics, water waves and multi-fluid systems.

Abstract:We investigate adiabatic evolution of quantum states as governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and provide examples of applications with a nonlinear tunneling model for Bose-Einstein condensates. Our analysis not only spells out conditions for adiabatic evolution of eigenstates but also characterizes the motion of noneigenstates which cannot be obtained from the former in the absence of the superposition principle. We find that Aharonov-Anandan phases play the role of classical canonical actions and are conserved in the adiabatic evolution of noneigenstates.

Abstract:Chaotic systems which are due to nonlinearity have attracted a great concern in the current world and chaotic models. Systems for a wide range of operation conditions have their application in almost all branches of engineering and science. In the history of chaotic studies and nonlinearity, many different but co-existent phases can be distinguished [1]. In the initial phase, chaos was considered as a deterministic regime which, most probably, was responsible for the variations that was regarded as noise and thus was being modeled as a stochastic process. In the second phase, it was of great significance to establish criteria for detecting chaotic dynamics and thus establishing dynamical invariants which were necessary in quantifying chaos. The third step which was to develop machine learning models which could learn the dynamics and chaos from the data of the strange attractor [2]. With respect to this aspect, various model structures were developed and investigated on their ability to detect chaos from a given set of data [3]. These model structures included radial basis functions, and local linear mapping among others. The third phase is currently being investigated together with other issues surrounding nonlinear dynamics and chaos, for instance in noise reduction and control, among other issues.
