Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications

Abstract:This is a survey paper on the recent development of the spectral theory of nonnegative tensors and its applications. After a brief review of the basic definitions on tensors, the H-eigenvalue problem and the Z-eigenvalue problem for tensors are studied separately. To the H-eigenvalue problem for nonnegative tensors, the whole Perron-Frobenius theory for nonnegative matrices is completely extended, while to the Z-eigenvalue problem, there are many distinctions and are studied carefully in details. Numerical methods are also discussed. Three kinds of applications are studied: higher order Markov chains, spectral theory of hypergraphs, and the quantum entanglement. T-Quadratic Forms and Spectral Analysis of T-Symmetric Tensors

Abstract:An $n \times n \times p$ tensor is called a T-square tensor. It arises from many applications, such as the image feature extraction problem and the multi-view clustering problem. We may symmetrize a T-square tensor to a T-symmetric tensor. For each T-square tensor, we define a T-quadratic form, whose variable is an $n \times p$ matrix, and whose value is a $p$-dimensional vector. We define eigentuples and eigenmatrices for T-square tensors. We show that a T-symmetric tensor has unique largest and smallest eigentuples, and a T-quadratic form is positive semi-definite (definite) if and only if its smallest eigentuple is nonnegative (positive). The relation between the eigen-decomposition of T-symmetric tensors, and the TSVD of general third order tensors are also studied.

Abstract:We introduce a trilinear functional of differential one-forms for a finitely summable regular spectral triple with a noncommutative residue. We demonstrate that for a canonical spectral triple over a spin manifold it recovers the torsion of the linear connection. We examine several spectral triples, including Hodge-de\,Rham, Einstein-Yang-Mills, almost-commutative two-sheeted space, conformally rescaled noncommutative tori, and quantum $SU(2)$ group, showing that the third one has a nonvanishing torsion if nontrivially coupled.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the extension of the ϵ-pseudo-spectra theory from matrices to tensors. Based on the definition of an eigenpair of real symmetric tensors and results on the ϵ-pseudo-spectrum of square matrices, we first introduce the ϵ-pseudo-spectrum of a complex tensor and investigate its fundamental properties, such as its computational interpretations and the link with the stability of its related homogeneous dynamical system. We then extend the ϵ-pseudo-spectrum to the setting of tensor polynomial eigenvalue problems. We further derive basic structure of the ϵ-pseudo-spectrum for tensor polynomial eigenvalue problems including the symmetry, boundedness and number of connected components under suitable mild assumptions. Finally, we discuss the implication of the ϵ-pseudo-spectrum for computing the backward errors and the distance from a regular tensor polynomial to the nearest irregular tensor polynomial.

We do not attempt to treat these two approaches separately but rather provide broad motivation and the necessary background to reach to the frontiers of this fast-evolving field of research, explaining simultaneously the relevant geometric and physical aspects. The targeted audience is researchers and advanced students from either a rather mathematical or physical oriented education who wish to enter the field.

Abstract:A localization set and an exclusion set for the pseudospectrum of tensors are given. As applications, we first use the pseudospectra localization sets to locate asymptotically stable sets for homogeneous dynamical systems, and then two upper bounds for the largest modulus of the asymptotically stable set are given to estimate the asymptotic decay rate for homogeneous dynamical systems. We also provide two lower bounds for the preservation measure to the positive definiteness of the homogeneous polynomial form. In addition, some sufficient conditions for the global uniqueness and solvability of tensor complementarity problems are presented. The last application is to test copositivity of some potential fields in particle physics.

Abstract:The quest for a consistent theory for quantum gravity is one of the most challenging problems in theoretical high-energy physics. An often-used approach is to describe the gravitational degrees of freedom by the metric tensor or related variables, and finding a way to quantise this. In the canonical tensor model, the gravitational degrees of freedom are encoded in a tensorial quantity $P_{abc}$, and this quantity is subsequently quantised. This makes the quantisation much more straightforward mathematically, but the interpretation of this tensor as a spacetime is less evident. In this work we take a first step towards fully understanding the relationship to spacetime. By considering $P_{abc}$ as the generator of an algebra of functions, we first describe how we can recover the topology and the measure of a compact Riemannian manifold. Using the tensor rank decomposition, we then generalise this principle in order to have a well-defined notion of the topology and geometry for a large class of tensors $P_{abc}$. We provide some examples of the emergence of a topology and measure of both exact and perturbed Riemannian manifolds, and of a purely algebraically-defined space called the semi-local circle.

Abstract:Recently Dabrowski etc. \cite{DL} obtained the metric and Einstein functionals by two vector fields and Laplace-type operators over vector bundles, giving an interesting example of the spinor connection and square of the Dirac operator. Pf$\ddot{a}$ffle and Stephan \cite{PS1} considered orthogonal connections with arbitrary torsion on compact Riemannian manifolds and computed the spectral action. Motivated by the spectral functionals and Dirac operators with torsion, we give some new spectral functionals which is the extension of spectral functionals to the noncommutative realm with torsion, and we relate them to the noncommutative residue for manifolds with boundary. Our method of producing these spectral functionals is the noncommutative residue and Dirac operators with torsion.

Abstract:For every $n>0$ there is a unitary operator $U$ such that the unitary operator with simple Lebesgue spectrum is isomorphic to the tensor product $U\otimes U^2\otimes\dots\otimes U^{2^n}.$ There is an ergodic automorphism $T$ with its symmetric tensor power $T^{\odot n}$ of simple spectrum, and $T^{\odot(n+1)}$ of absolutely continuous spectrum.

Abstract:Random tensors are the natural generalization of random matrices to higher order objects. They provide generating functions for random geometries and, assuming some familiarity with random matrix theory and quantum field theory, we discuss in the first part of this note the applications of such models to quantum gravity. In a second part we review tensor field theories, that is standard field theories in $\mathbb{R}^d$ but with tensor fields, which lead to a new family of large $N$ conformal field theories relevant for the study of the $AdS/CFT$ correspondence.

Torsion and Lorentz symmetry from Twisted Spectral Triples

Abstract:By twisting the spectral triple of a riemannian spin manifold, we show how to generate an orthogonal and geodesic preserving torsion from a torsionless Dirac operator. We identify the group of twisted unitaries as the generator of torsion with co-exact three form. Through the fermionic action, the torsion term identifies with a Lorentzian energy-momentum 4-vector. The Lorentz group turns out to be a normal subgroup of the twisted unitaries. We also investigate the spectral action related to this model.

Abstract:The tensor t-product, introduced by Kilmer and Martin [26], is a powerful tool for the analysis of and computation with third-order tensors. This paper introduces eigentubes and eigenslices of third-order tensors under the t-product. The eigentubes and eigenslices are analogues of eigenvalues and eigenvectors for matrices. Properties of eigentubes and eigenslices are investigated and numerical methods for their computation are described. The methods include the tensor power method, tensor subspace iteration, and the tensor QR algorithm. Computed examples illustrate the performance of these methods.

Abstract:Assuming some familiarity with quantum field theory and with the tensor track approach that we presented in the previous series Tensor Track I-VII, we provide, as usual, the developments in tensors models of the last two years. Then we expose the fundamental breakthrough of Martin Hairer on regularity structures and the work of Léonard Ferdinand on stochastic analysis applied to super-renormalizable tensor field theories. We conclude with the hope that this work could be extended to just-renormalizable and asymptotically free models.

Abstract:Consider a quadratic vector field on $\mathbb{C}^2$ having an invariant line at infinity and isolated singularities only. We define the extended spectra of singularities to be the collection of the spectra of the linearization matrices of each of the singular points over the affine part, together with all the characteristic numbers (i.e. Camacho-Sad indices) at infinity. This collection consists of 11 complex numbers, and is invariant under affine equivalence of vector fields. In this paper we describe all polynomial relations among these numbers. There are 5 independent polynomial relations; four of them follow from the Euler-Jacobi, the Baum-Bott and the Camacho-Sad index theorems, and are well known. The fifth relation was, until now, completely unknown. We provide an explicit formula for the missing 5th relation, discuss it's meaning and prove that it cannot be formulated as an index theorem.
