Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

Abstract:To study the prescribed $k$ -curvature problem of 2nd-order symmetric curvature tensors on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds, we consider a class of fully nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations. It is proved that on a Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature and Ricci curvature bounded from below, the equation is solvable provided that all the eigenvalues of the tensor are negative. The result is applicable to the prescribed $k$ -curvature problems of modified Schouten tensor and Bakry–Émery Ricci tensor.

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:The problem of prescribing conformally the scalar curvature on a closed Riemannian manifold of negative Yamabe invariant is always solvable, when the function $K$ to be prescribed is strictly negative, while sufficient and necessary conditions are known for $K\leq 0$. For sign changing $K$ Rauzy showed solvability, if $K$ is not too positive. We revisit this problem in a different variational context, thereby recovering and quantifying the principle existence result of Rauzy and show under additional assumptions, that for a sign changing $K$ solutions to the conformally prescribed scalar curvature problem, while existing, are not unique.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a Kazdan-Warner problem on compact Kähler surfaces with negative Gauduchon degree, which corresponds to prescribing sign-changing Chern scalar curvatures. By the method of our recent paper [J. Funt. Anal. 285 (2023): 109948], we establish a Chen-Li type existence theorem on compact Kähler surfaces when the candidate curvature function is of negative average. Moreover, we give an alternative proof of Ding-Liu's theorem [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 347(1995) 1059-1066] on prescribing sign-changing Gaussian curvatures by using the $\sup+\inf$ inequality due to H. Brezis, Y. Y. Li and I. Shafrir.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that, a compact complex manifold X admits a smooth Hermitian metric with positive (resp., negative) scalar curvature if and only if K-X (resp., K-X(-1)) is not pseudo-effective. On the contrary, we also show that on an arbitrary compact complex manifold X with complex dimension >= 2, there exist smooth Hermitian metrics with positive total scalar curvature, and one of the key ingredients in the proof relies on a recent solution to the Gauduchon conjecture by G. Szekelyhidi, V. Tosatti, and B. Weinkove.

Abstract:This paper deals with the question of prescribing the Gaussian curvature on a disk and the geodesic curvature of its boundary by means of a conformal deformation of the metric. We restrict ourselves to a symmetric setting in which the Gaussian curvature is negative, and we are able to give general existence results. Our approach is variational, and solutions will be searched as critical points of an associated functional. The proofs use a perturbation argument via the monotonicity trick of Struwe, together with a blow-up analysis and Morse index estimates. We also give a nonexistence result that shows that, to some extent, the assumptions required for existence are necessary.

Abstract:We consider the problem of finding conformal metrics on the standard half sphere with prescribed scalar curvature and zero-boundary mean curvature. We prove a perturbation result when the curvature function is flat near its boundary critical points. As a product we extend some previous well known results and provide an entirely new one.

Abstract:Prescribing conformally the scalar curvature on a closed manifold with negative Yamabe invariant as a given function $K$ is possible under smallness assumptions on $K_{+}=\max\{K,0\}$ and in particular, when $K<0$. In addition, while solutions are unique in case $K\leq 0$, non uniqueness generally holds, when $K$ is sign changing and $K_{+}$ sufficiently small and flat around its critical points. These solutions are found variationally as minimizers. Here we study, what happens, when the relevant arguments fail to apply, describing on one hand the loss of minimizability generally, while on the other we construct a function $K$, for which saddle point solutions to the conformally prescribed scalar curvature problem still exist.

Abstract:We consider prescribing Gaussian curvature on a 2-sphere S-2. There are well-known Kazdan-Warner and Bourguinon-Ezin necessary conditions for a function K to be the Gaussian curvature of some pointwise conformal metric. Then are those necessary conditions also sufficient? This is a problem of common concern and has been left open for a few years. In this paper, we answer the question negatively. First, we show that if K is rotationally symmetric and is monotone in the region where K > 0, then the problem has no rationally symmetric solution. Then we provide a family of functions K satisfying the Kazdan-Warner and Bourguinon-Ezin conditions, for which the problem has no solution at all. We also consider prescribing scalar curvature on S-n for n greater than or equal to 3. We prove the nonexistence of rationally symmetric solution for the above mentioned functions.
Scalar curvature lower bounds on asymptotically flat manifolds

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the scalar curvature in the distributional sense of \cite{MR3366052} and the scalar curvature lower bound in the $\beta-$weak $(\beta\in(0, \frac{1}{2}))$ sense of \cite{MR4685089} on an asymptotically flat $n-$manifold with a $W^{1,p}(p>n)$ metric. We first show that the scalar curvature lower bound under the Ricci-DeTurck flow depends on the scalar curvature lower bound in the $\beta-$weak sense and the time. Then we prove that the lower bound of the distributional scalar curvature of a $W^{1, p}$ metric coincides with the lower bound of the scalar curvature in the $\beta-$weak sense at infinity.

Then, (a) is this a sufficient condition? (b) If not, what are the necessary and sufficient conditions? These have been open problems for decades. In Chen & Li, 1995, we gave question ( a) a negative answer. We showed that a necessary condition for ( 1) to have a solution is: (2) R'(r) changes signs in the region where R is positive. Now is this also a sufficient condition? In this paper, we prove that if R(r) satisfies the 'flatness condition', then ( 2) is the necessary and sufficient condition for ( 1) to have a solution. This essentially answers question ( b). We also generalized this result to non-symmetric functions R. Here the additional 'flatness condition' is a standard assumption which has been used by many authors to guarantee the existence of a solution. In particular, for n = 3, non-degenerate functions satisfy this condition. Based on Theorem 3 in Chen & Li, 1995, we also show that for some rotationally symmetric R, ( 1) is solvable while none of the solutions is rotationally symmetric. This is interesting in the studying of symmetry breaking.

Abstract:Using minimal hypersurfaces, we obtain topological obstructions to admitting complete metrics with positive scalar curvature on a given class of non-compact n-manifolds with n less than 8. We show that the Liouville theorem for a locally conformally flat n-manifold of non-negative scalar curvature follows from the impossibility of there being a positive scalar curvature metric on its connect sum with the n-torus. With the recent work of Chodosh-Li, the Liouville theorem is now proved in all remaining cases. Finally, using MOTS instead of minimal hypersurfaces, we show an Initial Data Set version of these results with the Dominant Energy Scalar appearing instead of positive scalar curvature.

Abstract:In this paper, we reinvestigate an old problem of prescribing Gaussian curvature in the negative case. In 1974, Kazdan and Warner considered the equation - Delta u + alpha = R(x) e(u) , x epsilon M, on any compact two dimensional manifold M with alpha < 0. They showed that there exists a number α(o), such that the equation is solvable for every 0 > alpha > alpha(o) and it is not solvable for alpha < α(o). Then one may naturally ask: Is the equation solvable for α = α(o)? In this paper, we answer the question affirmatively. We show that there exists at least one solution for α = α(o).

The result states that if g(t) is a Kahler Ricci o w on a compact, Kahler manifold M with c1(M) > 0, the scalar curvature and diameter of (M; g(t)) stay uniformly bounded along the o w, for t 2 (0;1).
