Abstract:We give obstructions for a noncompact manifold to admit a complete Riemannian metric with (nonuniformly) positive scalar curvature. We treat both the finite volume and infinite volume cases.

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds endowed with a continuous metric and the metric is smooth away from a compact subset with certain conditions. If the metric is Lipschitz and the scalar curvature is nonnegative away from a closed subset with (n - 1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure zero, then we prove that the ADM mass of each end is nonnegative. Furthermore, if the ADM mass of some end is zero, then we prove that the manifold is isometric to the Euclidean space. The Hausdorff measure condition is optimal, which confirms a conjecture of Lee in 2013. The proof of the nonnegativity is based on a smoothing argument with some new estimates such as a L-1-scalar curvature approximation estimates. The proof of the rigidity relies on the RCD theory where we show that the manifold has nonnegative Ricci curvature in RCD sense. The idea involving RCD theory in the proof turns out to be much more suitable in the study of the rigidity for continuous metrics. Furthermore, our result generalizes the result of Lee and LeFloch (Commun Math Phys 339(1):99-120, 2015) from spin to non-spin.

Abstract:Using minimal hypersurfaces, we obtain topological obstructions to admitting complete metrics with positive scalar curvature on a given class of non-compact n-manifolds with n less than 8. We show that the Liouville theorem for a locally conformally flat n-manifold of non-negative scalar curvature follows from the impossibility of there being a positive scalar curvature metric on its connect sum with the n-torus. With the recent work of Chodosh-Li, the Liouville theorem is now proved in all remaining cases. Finally, using MOTS instead of minimal hypersurfaces, we show an Initial Data Set version of these results with the Dominant Energy Scalar appearing instead of positive scalar curvature.
Complete Riemannian 4-manifolds with uniformly positive scalar curvature

Abstract:We obtain topological obstructions to the existence of a complete Riemannian metric with uniformly positive scalar curvature on certain (non-compact) $4$-manifolds. In particular, such a metric on the interior of a compact contractible $4$-manifold uniquely distinguishes the standard $4$-ball up to diffeomorphism among Mazur manifolds and up to homeomorphism in general. We additionally show there exist uncountably many exotic $\mathbb{R}^4$'s that do not admit such a metric and that any (non-compact) tame $4$-manifold has a smooth structure that does not admit such a metric.

Abstract:We study obstructions to the existence of Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature on closed smooth manifolds arising from torsion classes in the integral homology of their fundamental groups. As an application, we construct new examples of manifolds which do not admit positive scalar curvature metrics, but whose Cartesian products admit such metrics.

On three-dimensional manifold, we prove a minimal volume growth, an estimate of integral of scalar curvature and width. On higher-dimensional manifold, we obtain a volume growth with a stronger condition.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the topological obstruction problem for positive scalar curvature and uniformly positive scalar curvature on open manifolds. We present a definition for open Schoen-Yau-Schick manifolds and prove that there is no complete metric with positive scalar curvature on these manifolds. Similarly, we define weak Schoen-Yau-Shick manifolds by analogy, which are expected to admit no complete metrics with uniformly positive scalar curvature.

Abstract:A (compact) manifold with fibered $P$-singularities is a (possibly) singular pseudomanifold $M_\Sigma$ with two strata: an open nonsingular stratum $\mathring M$ (a smooth open manifold) and a closed stratum $\beta M$ (a closed manifold of positive codimension), such that a tubular neighborhood of $\beta M$ is a fiber bundle with fibers each looking like the cone on a fixed closed manifold $P$. We discuss what it means for such an $M_{\Sigma}$ with fibered $P$-singularities to admit an appropriate Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature, and we give necessary and sufficient conditions (the necessary conditions based on suitable versions of index theory, the sufficient conditions based on surgery methods and homotopy theory) for this to happen when the singularity type $P$ is either $\mathbb Z/k$ or $S^1$, and $M$ and the boundary of the tubular neighborhood of the singular stratum are simply connected and carry spin structures. Along the way, we prove some results of perhaps independent interest, concerning metrics on spin$^c$ manifolds with positive "twisted scalar curvature," where the twisting comes from the curvature of the spin$^c$ line bundle.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that, a compact complex manifold X admits a smooth Hermitian metric with positive (resp., negative) scalar curvature if and only if K-X (resp., K-X(-1)) is not pseudo-effective. On the contrary, we also show that on an arbitrary compact complex manifold X with complex dimension >= 2, there exist smooth Hermitian metrics with positive total scalar curvature, and one of the key ingredients in the proof relies on a recent solution to the Gauduchon conjecture by G. Szekelyhidi, V. Tosatti, and B. Weinkove.
Positive scalar curvature with point singularities

Abstract:We show that in every dimension $n \geq 8$, there exists a smooth closed manifold $M^n$ which does not admit a smooth positive scalar curvature ("psc") metric, but $M$ admits an $\mathrm{L}^\infty$-metric which is smooth and has psc outside a singular set of codimension $\geq 8$. This provides counterexamples to a conjecture of Schoen. In fact, there are such examples of arbitrarily high dimension with only single point singularities. We also discuss related phenomena on exotic spheres and tori. In addition, we provide examples of $\mathrm{L}^\infty$-metrics on $\mathbb{R}^n$ for certain $n \geq 8$ which are smooth and have psc outside the origin, but cannot be smoothly approximated away from the origin by everywhere smooth Riemannian metrics of non-negative scalar curvature. This stands in precise contrast to established smoothing results via Ricci-DeTurck flow for singular metrics with stronger regularity assumptions. Finally, as a positive result, we describe a $\mathrm{KO}$-theoretic condition which obstructs the existence of $\mathrm{L}^\infty$-metrics that are smooth and of psc outside a finite subset. This shows that closed enlargeable spin manifolds do not carry such metrics.

Abstract:Let ( M , L ) be a (compact) non-spin spin manifold. Fix a Riemannian metric g on M and a connection A on L , and let be the associated spin Dirac operator. Let be the twisted scalar curvature (which takes values in the endomorphisms of the spinor bundle), where is the scalar curvature of g and comes from the curvature 2-form of the connection A . Then the Lichnerowicz-Schrödinger formula for the square of the Dirac operator takes the form . In a previous work we proved that a closed non-spin simply-connected spin -manifold ( M , L ) of dimension admits a pair ( g , A ) such that if and only if the index vanishes in . In this paper we introduce a scalar-valued generalized scalar curvature , where is the pointwise operator norm of Clifford multiplication , acting on spinors. We show that the positivity condition on the operator is equivalent to the positivity of the scalar function . We prove a corresponding trichotomy theorem concerning the curvature , and study its implications. We also show that the space of pairs ( g , A ) with has non-trivial topology, and address a conjecture about non-triviality of the "index difference" map.

Abstract:Let (M,g^TM) be a noncompact (not necessarily complete) enlargeable Riemannian manifold in the sense of Gromov-Lawson and F an integrable subbundle of T M . Let k^F be the leafwise scalar curvature associated to g^F=g^TM|_F. We show that if either TM or F is spin, then inf(k^F)≤ 0. This generalizes the famous result of Gromov-Lawson on enlargeable manifolds to the case of foliations. It also extends an ansatz of Gromov on hyper-Euclidean spaces to general enlargeable Riemannian manifolds, as well as recent results on compact enlargeable foliated manifolds due to Benameur-Heitsch et al to the noncompact situation.

Abstract:We show that an orientable 3-dimensional manifold M admits a complete riemannian metric of bounded geometry and uniformly pos- itive scalar curvature if and only if there exists a finite collection F of spherical space-forms such that M is a (possibly infinite) connected sum where each summand is diffeomorphic to S2xS1 or to some mem- ber of F. This result generalises G. Perelman's classification theorem for compact 3-manifolds of positive scalar curvature. The main tool is a variant of Perelman's surgery construction for Ricci flow.

To be more precise, let U C M be the open subset where the Ricci tensor has maximum rank r. Then for any connected component U a of U, its universal cover U a is isometric to R n―r ×N r a , where n r a is a nonpositively curved manifold with negative Ricci curvature. Abstract:We prove a Geroch type result for isolated conical singularity. Namely, we show that there is no Riemannian metric $g$ on $ X \# T^n $ with an isolated conical singularity which has nonnegative scalar curvature on the regular part, and is positive at some point. In particular, this implies that there is no metric on tori with an isolated conical singularity and positive scalar curvature. We also prove that a scalar flat Riemannian metric $g$ on $X \# T^n$ with finitely many isolated conical singularities must be flat, and extend smoothly across the singular points. We do not a priori assume that a conically singular point on $X$ is a manifold point; i.e., the cross section of the conical singularity may not be spherical.
