Abstract:The first examples of complete projective connections are uncovered: normal projective connections on surfaces whose geodesics are all closed and embedded are complete, as are normal projective connections induced from complete affine connections with slowly decaying positive Ricci curvature.

Abstract:We determine all complete projective special real surfaces. By the supergravity r-map, they give rise to complete projective special Kähler manifolds of dimension 6, which are distinguished by the image of their scalar curvature function. By the supergravity c-map, the latter manifolds define in turn complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds of dimension 16.

Abstract:The aim of this paper and its sequel is to introduce and classify the holonomy algebras of the projective Tractor connection. After a brief historical background, this paper presents and analyses the projective Cartan and Tractor connections, the various structures they can preserve, and their geometric interpretations. Preserved subbundles of the Tractor bundle generate foliations with Ricci-flat leaves. Contact- and Einstein-structures arise from other reductions of the Tractor holonomy, as do U(1) and $Sp(1, \mathbb{H})$ bundles over a manifold of smaller dimension.

Abstract:We define what we call morphisms of Cartan connections. We generalize the main theorems on Cartan connections to theorems on morphisms. Many of the known constructions involving Cartan connections turn out to be examples of morphisms. We prove some basic results concerning completeness of Cartan connections. We provide a new method to prove completeness of Cartan connections using families of morphisms.

Abstract:In algebraic topology, we usually represent surfaces by mean of cellular complexes. This representation is intrinsic, but requires to identify some points through an equivalence relation. On the other hand, embedding a surface in a Euclidean space is not intrinsic but does not require to identify points. In the present paper, we are interested in the Möbius strip, the torus, and the real projective plane. More precisely, we construct explicit homeomorphisms, as well as their inverses, from cellular complexes to surfaces of 3-dimensional (for the Möbius strip and the torus) and 4-dimensional (for the projective plane) Euclidean spaces. All the embeddings were already known, but we are not aware if explicit formulas for their inverses exist.

Abstract:We investigate the projective Fra\"ıssé family of finite connected graphs with confluent epimorphisms and the continuum obtained as the topological realization of its projective Fra\"ıssé limit. This continuum was unknown before. We prove that it is indecomposable, but not hereditarily indecomposable, one-dimensional, Kelley, pointwise self-homeomorphic, but not homogeneous. It is hereditarily unicoherent and each point is the top of the Cantor fan. Moreover, the universal solenoid, the universal pseudo-solenoid, and the pseudo-arc may be embedded in it.

Holomorphic projective connections on surfaces and osculating spaces

Abstract:We study complex analytic projective connections on surfaces in projective n-spaces in terms of the "second" neighborhood of the surface in the ambient space, and in terms of the osculating behavior of the integral curves. We also investigate the action of a remarkable rational transformation on projective connections, and give the geometrical interpretation of joint invariants of a group closely related to the study of equivalence classes of projective connections on surfaces.

Abstract:We show that the standard definitions of Sasaki structures have elegant and simplifying interpretations in terms of projective differential geometry. For Sasaki-Einstein structures we use projective geometry to provide a resolution of such structures into geometrically less rigid components; the latter elemental components are separately, complex, orthogonal, and symplectic holonomy reductions of the canonical projective tractor/Cartan connection. This leads to a characterisation of Sasaki-Einstein structures as projective structures with certain unitary holonomy reductions. As an immediate application, this is used to describe the projective compactification of indefinite (suitably) complete non-compact Sasaki-Einstein structures and to prove that the boundary at infinity is a Fefferman conformal manifold that thus fibres over a nondegenerate CR manifold (of hypersurface type). We prove that this CR manifold coincides with the boundary at infinity for the c-projective compactification of the Kähler-Einstein manifold that arises, in the usual way, as a leaf space for the defining Killing field of the given Sasaki-Einstein manifold. A procedure for constructing examples is given. The discussion of symplectic holonomy reductions of projective structures leads us moreover to a new and simplifying approach to contact projective geometry. This is of independent interest and is treated in some detail.

Abstract:There are two canonical projective structures on any compact Riemann surface of genus at least two: one coming from the uniformization theorem and the other from Hodge theory. They produce two (different) families of projective structures over the moduli space of compact Riemann surfaces. A recent work of Biswas, Favale, Pirola and Torelli shows that families of projective structures over admit an equivalent characterization in terms of complex connections on the dual of the determinant of the Hodge line bundle over ; the same work gave the connection on corresponding to the projective structures coming from uniformization.

Abstract:We prove that the supergravity r- and c-maps preserve completeness. As a consequence, any component H of a hypersurface {h=1} defined by a homogeneous cubic polynomial such that -d^2 h is a complete Riemannian metric on H defines a complete projective special Kahler manifold and any complete projective special Kahler manifold defines a complete quaternionic Kahler manifold of negative scalar curvature. We classify all complete quaternionic Kahler manifolds of dimension less or equal to 12 which are obtained in this way and describe some complete examples in 16 dimensions.

Abstract:In this paper we describe projective curves and surfaces such that almost all their hyperplane sections are projectively equivalent. Our description is complete for curves and close to being complete for smooth surfaces. In the appendix we make some remarks on connections between the mentioned property of a projective variety and its adjunction properties.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a complete variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero, equipped with an action of an algebraic group $G$. Let $H$ be a reductive group. We study the notion of $G$-connection on a principal $H$-bundle. We give necessary and sufficient criteria for the existence of $G$-connections extending the Atiyah-Weil type criterion for holomorphic connections obtained by Azad and Biswas. We also establish a relationship between the existence of $G$-connection and equivariant structure on a principal $H$-bundle, under the assumption that $G$ is semisimple and simply connected. These results have been obtained by Biswas et al. when the underlying variety is smooth.

Higher Complex Structures and Flat Connections

Abstract:In 2018, Vladimir Fock and the author introduced a geometric structure on surfaces, called higher complex structure, whose moduli space shares several properties with Hitchin's component. In this paper, we establish various links between flat connections and higher complex structures. In particular, we study a certain class of connections on a bundle equipped with a line subbundle $L$, which we call $L$-parabolic. The curvature of these connections is of rank 1. A certain family of $L$-parabolic connections is parametrized by the data of a higher complex structure and a cotangent variation. The family of connections being flat implies the compatibility condition of the cotangent variation. Higher diffeomorphisms are realized by the gauge transformation induced by changing $L$. Constructing flat families of connections of this kind is linked to Toda integrable systems.

Abstract:Let $\varphi : Y \rightarrow X$ be a finite surjective morphism between smooth complex projective curves, where $X$ is irreducible but $Y$ need not be so. Let $V_*$ be a parabolic vector bundle on $Y$. We construct a parabolic structure on the direct image $\varphi_* V$ on $X$, where $V$ is the vector bundle underlying $V_*$. The parabolic vector bundle $\varphi_* V_*$ on $X$ obtained this way has a ramified torus sub-bundle; it is a torus bundle of $\text{Ad}(\varphi_* V)$ outside the parabolic divisor for $\varphi_* V_*$ that satisfies certain conditions at the parabolic points. Conversely, given a parabolic vector bundle $E_*$ on $X$, and a ramified torus sub-bundle $\mathcal T$ for it, we construct a ramified covering $Z$ of $X$ and a parabolic vector bundle $W_*$ on $Z$, such that the parabolic bundle $E_*$ is the direct image of $W_*$. A connection on $V_*$ produces a connection on $\varphi_* V_*$. The ramified torus sub-bundle for $\varphi_* V_*$ is preserved by the logarithmic connection on $\text{End}(\varphi_* V)$ induced by this connection on $\varphi_* V_*$. If the parabolic vector bundle $E_*$ on $X$ is equipped with a connection $D$ such that the connection on the endomorphism bundle induced by it preserves the ramified torus sub-bundle $\mathcal T$, then we prove that the corresponding parabolic vector bundle $W_*$ on $Z$ has a connection that produces the connection $D$ on the direct image $E_*$.

Explicit constructions of connections on the projective line with a maximally ramified irregular singularity

Abstract:The Deligne--Simpson problem is an existence problem for connections with specified local behavior. Almost all previous work on this problem has restricted attention to connections with regular or unramified singularities. Recently, the authors, together with Kulkarni and Matherne, formulated a version of the Deligne--Simpson problem where certain ramified singular points are allowed and solved it for the case of Coxeter connections, i.e., connections on the Riemann sphere with a maximally ramified singularity at zero and (possibly) an additional regular singular point at infinity. A certain matrix completion problem, which we call the Upper Nilpotent Completion Problem, plays a key role in our solution. This problem was solved by Krupnik and Leibman, but their work does not provide a practical way of constructing explicit matrix completions. Accordingly, our previous work does not give explicit Coxeter connections with specified singularities. In this paper, we provide a numerically stable and highly efficient algorithm for producing upper nilpotent completions of certain matrices that arise in the theory of Coxeter connections. Moreover, we show how the matrices generated by this algorithm can be used to provide explicit constructions of Coxeter connections with arbitrary unipotent monodromy in each case that such a connection exists.

Abstract:Given a simple, simply connected, complex algebraic group G , a flat projective connection on the bundle of non-abelian theta functions on the moduli space of semistable parabolic G -bundles over any family of smooth projective curves with marked points was constructed by the authors in an earlier paper. Here, it is shown that the identification between the bundle of non-abelian theta functions and the bundle of WZW conformal blocks is flat with respect to this connection and the one constructed by Tsuchiya–Ueno–Yamada. As an application, we give a geometric construction of the Knizhnik–Zamolodchikov connection on the trivial bundle over the configuration space of points in the projective line whose typical fiber is the space of invariants of tensor product of representations.
