Abstract:The premier exhibition of the following phenomenon: The fundamental group of any Peano continuum constructed in similar fashion to the Hawaiian earring admits two natural distinct topological group structures. However despite being uncountable and regular, neither group is a Baire space and hence neither group admits a compatible complete metric.

Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. Abstract:The paper is devoted to study the structure of Hawaiian groups of some topological spaces. We present some behaviors of Hawaiian groups with respect to product spaces, weak join spaces, cone spaces, covering spaces and locally trivial bundles. In particular, we determine the structure of the $n$-dimensional Hawaiian group of the $m$-dimensional Hawaiian earring space, for all $1\leq m\leq n$.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to explore properties of the whisker topology, which is a topology endowed on the fundamental group and whose utility is to detect locally complicated phenomena in pathological topological spaces. We show that the whisker topology preserves products, resolve an open question regarding the existence of a space which makes $\pi_1^{wh}(X,x_0)$ a non-discrete, non-abelian, and Hausdorff topological group, and show the whisker topology is not separable on the earring group $\pi_1(\Er^1,x_0)$.

Abstract:The harmonic archipelago HA is obtained by attaching a large pinched annulus to every pair of consecutive loops of the Hawaiian earring. We clarify the fundamental group pi1(HA) as a quotient of the Hawaiian earring group, provide a precise description of the kernel, show that both pi1(HA) and the kernel are uncountable, and that pi1(HA) has the indiscrete topology.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of a natural group topology on the fundamental group which remembers local properties of spaces forgotten by covering space theory and weak homotopy type. It is known that viewing the fundamental group as the quotient of the loop space often fails to result in a topological group; we use free topological groups to construct a topology which promotes the fundamental group of any space to topological group structure. The resulting invariant, denoted $\pi_{1}^{\tau}$, takes values in the category of topological groups, can distinguish spaces with isomorphic fundamental groups, and agrees with the quotient fundamental group precisely when the quotient topology yields a topological group. Most importantly, this choice of topology allows us to naturally realize free topological groups and pushouts of topological groups as fundamental groups via topological analogues of classical results in algebraic topology.

Abstract:In previous publications, we have started investigating some possible applications to the retraction theory in gravitational physics and showed that it can be very useful in providing proofs and explaining the topological bases. In the current work, we investigate the role of the retraction theory in the mathematical study of space-time singularities and suggest a topological restriction on the formation of singularities. Although we present a toy model using a 5D cosmological metric as an example, the current study applies for any collapsing system under the influence of gravity such as a massive star or the whole universe. After showing that the cosmological space-time $M$ can be retracted into lower dimensional circles $S_i \subset M $, we prove the existence of a homotopy between this retraction and the identity map which defines a deformation retract on $M$. Since a circle doesn't deformation retract onto a point but it does retract to a point, the defined deformation retract stops any circle $S_i$ from retracting into a point which means no singularity is formed. The paper underlines the role of algebraic topology in the mathematical study of space-time singularities and represents a new application of the retraction theory in mathematical physics.

Abstract:We study the eigenforms of the action of A. Baker's Hecke operators on the holomorphic elliptic homology of various topological spaces. We prove a multiplicity one theorem (i.e., one-dimensionality of the space of these "topological Hecke eigenforms" for any given eigencharacter) for some classes of topological spaces, and we give examples of finite CW-complexes for which multiplicity one fails. We also develop some abstract "derived eigentheory" whose motivating examples arise from the failure of classical Hecke operators to commute with multiplication by various Eisenstein series, or non-cuspidal holomorphic modular forms in general. Part of this "derived eigentheory" is an identification of certain derived Hecke eigenforms as the obstructions to extending topological Hecke eigenforms from the top cell of a CW-complex to the rest of the CW-complex. Using these obstruction classes together with our multiplicity one theorem, we calculate the topological Hecke eigenforms explicitly, in terms of pairs of classical modular forms, on all 2-cell CW complexes obtained by coning off an element in which stably has Adams–Novikov filtration 1.

Abstract:This is the abstract prepared for Workshop on Topology and Geometry (Zhang jiang, China, October 1994), and is a review of my recent works. What kinds of combinations of singularities can appear in small deformation fibers of a fixed singularity? We consider this problem for hypersurface singularities on complex analytic spaces of dimension 2. For all singularities in the beginning par t of Arnold's classification list, the answer to this problem is given by a unique principle described by Dynkin graphs. Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we present finite topological type theorems for open manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature, under almost maximal local rewinding volume. Unlike previous related research, our theorems remove the constraints of sectional curvature or conjugate radius, which were crucial additional assumptions on metric regularity in prior results. Notably, our settings do not necessarily satisfy a triangle comparison of Toponogov type. In fact, the method we adopt also extends to many previous related studies.

Abstract:The object of this paper is to study GL(2,R) orbit closures in hyperelliptic components of strata of abelian differentials. The main result is that all higher rank affine invariant submanifolds in hyperelliptic components are branched covering constructions, i.e. every translation surface in the affine invariant submanifold covers a translation surface in a lower genus hyperelliptic component of a stratum of abelian differentials. This result implies finiteness of algebraically primitive Teichmuller curves in all hyperelliptic components for genus greater than two. A classification of all GL(2, R) orbit closures in hyperelliptic components of strata (up to computing connected components and up to finitely many nonarithmetic rank one orbit closures) is provided. Our main theorem resolves a pair of conjectures of Mirzakhani in the case of hyperelliptic components of moduli space.

Abstract:We show that the fundamental groupoid~$\Pi_1(X)$ of a locally path connected semilocally simply connected space~$X$ can be equipped with a \emph{natural} topology so that it becomes a topological groupoid; we also justify the necessity and minimality of these two hypotheses on~$X$ in order to topologise the fundamental groupoid. We find that contrary to a belief -- especially among the Operator Algebraists -- the fundamental groupoid is not {\etale}. Further, we prove that the fundamental groupoid of a topological group, in particular a Lie group, is a \emph{transformation groupoid}; again, this result disproves a standard belief that the fundamental groupoids are \emph{far} away from being transformation groupoids. We also discuss the point-set topology on the fundamental groupoid with the intention of making it a locally compact groupoid.
