Orthogonal Laurent polynomials of two real variables

Abstract:In this paper we consider an appropriate ordering of the Laurent monomials $x^{i}y^{j}$, $i,j \in \mathbb{Z}$ that allows us to study sequences of orthogonal Laurent polynomials of the real variables $x$ and $y$ with respect to a positive Borel measure $\mu$ defined on $\mathbb{R}^2$ such that $\{ x=0 \}\cup \{ y=0 \} \not\in \textrm{supp}(\mu)$. This ordering is suitable for considering the {\em multiplication plus inverse multiplication operator} on each varibale $\left( x+\frac{1}{x}\right.$ and $\left. y+\frac{1}{y}\right)$, and as a result we obtain five-term recurrence relations, Christoffel-Darboux and confluent formulas for the reproducing kernel and a related Favard's theorem. A connection with the one variable case is also presented, along with some applications for future research.

Abstract:We study the orthogonal complement of the Hilbert subspace considered by by van Eijndhoven and Meyers in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 146 (1990), no. 1, 89--98} and associated to holomorphic Hermite polynomials. A polyanalytic orthonormal basis is given and the explicit expressions of the corresponding reproducing kernel functions and Segal--Bargmann integral transforms are provided.

Abstract:For a bilinear form obtained by adding a Dirac mass to a positive definite moment functional in several variables, explicit formulas of orthogonal polynomials are derived from the orthogonal polynomials associated with the moment functional. Explicit formula for the reproducing kernel is also derived and used to establish certain inequalities for classical orthogonal polynomials.

Abstract:This paper addresses two primary objectives in the realm of classical multiple orthogonal polynomials with an arbitrary number of weights. Firstly, it establishes new and explicit hypergeometric expressions for type I Hahn multiple orthogonal polynomials. Secondly, applying the residue theorem and the Mellin transform, the paper derives contour integral representations for several families of orthogonal polynomials. Specifically, it presents contour integral formulas for both type I and type II multiple orthogonal polynomials in the Laguerre of the first kind, Jacobi-Piñeiro, and Hahn families. The evaluation of these integrals leads to explicit hypergeometric representations.

Abstract:In this paper we prove some characterizations of the matrix orthogonal polynomials whose derivatives are also orthogonal, which generalize other known ones in the scalar case. In particular, we prove that the corresponding orthogonality matrix functional is characterized by a Pearson-type equation with two matrix polynomials of degree not greater than 2 and 1. The proofs are given for a general sequence of matrix orthogonal polynomials, not necessarily associated with an hermitian functional. However, we give several examples of non-diagonalizable positive definite weight matrices satisfying a Pearson-type equation, which show that the previous results are non-trivial even in the positive definite case. A detailed analysis is made for the class of matrix functionals which satisfy a Pearson-type equation whose polynomial of degree not greater than 2 is scalar. We characterize the Pearson-type equations of this kind that yield a sequence of matrix orthogonal polynomials, and we prove that these matrix orthogonal polynomials satisfy a second order differential equation even in the non-hermitian case. Finally, we prove and improve a conjecture of Duran and Grunbaum concerning the triviality of this class in the positive definite case, while some examples show the non-triviality for hermitian functionals which are not positive definite.

Symmetry Integrability and Geometry Methods and Applications

Abstract:We consider determinants of Wronskian type whose entries are multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with a path connecting two multi-indices. By assuming that the weight functions form an algebraic Chebyshev (AT) system, we show that the polynomials represented by the Wronskians keep a constant sign in some cases, while in some other cases oscillatory behavior appears, which generalizes classical results for orthogonal polynomials due to Karlin and Szeg\H{o}. There are two applications of our results. The first application arises from the observation that the $m$-th moment of the average characteristic polynomials for multiple orthogonal polynomial ensembles can be expressed as a Wronskian of the type II multiple orthogonal polynomials. Hence, it is straightforward to obtain the distinct behavior of the moments for odd and even $m$ in a special multiple orthogonal ensemble - the AT ensemble. As the second application, we derive some Tur\'an type inequalities for multiple Hermite and multiple Laguerre polynomials (of two kinds). Finally, we study numerically the geometric configuration of zeros for the Wronskians of these multiple orthogonal polynomials. We observe that the zeros have regular configurations in the complex plane, which might be of independent interest.

Abstract:We investigate polynomials that satisfy simultaneous orthogonality conditions with respect to several measures on the unit circle. We generalize the direct and inverse Szegő recurrence relations, identify the analogues of the Verblunsky coefficients, and prove the Christoffel$\unicode{x2013}$Darboux formula. These results stand directly in analogue with the nearest neighbour recurrence relations from the real line counterpart.

Abstract:In this paper, a finite set of biorthogonal polynomials in two variables is produced using Konhauser polynomials. Some properties containing operational and integral representation, Laplace transform, fractional calculus operators of this family are studied. Also, computing Fourier transform for the new set, a new family of biorthogonal functions are derived via Parseval's identity. On the other hand, this finite set is modified by adding two new parameters in order to have semigroup property and construct fractional calculus operators. Further, integral equation and integral operator are also derived for the modified version.

Abstract:This paper continues the analysis of a class of orthogonal polynomials in two variables on a region bounded by two straight lines and a parabola touching these lines, which was introduced by the first author. An explicit series expansion for these polynomials is obtained, which generalizes Constantines expansion of hypergeometric functions of $(2 \times 2)$ matrix argument in terms of James zonal polynomials. In two special cases the orthogonal polynomials turn out to be Appells hypergeometric $F_4 $-functions and certain hypergeometric functions in two variables of order three, respectively.

Laurent Multiple Orthogonal Polynomials on the Unit Circle

Abstract:We introduce the notion of Laurent multiple orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. These are the trigonometric polynomials that satisfy simultaneous orthogonality conditions with respect to several measures on the unit circle. This provides an alternative way to the approach of extending the usual theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle to the multiple orthogonality case. We introduce Angelesco and AT systems, prove normality, and exhibit a connection to multiple orthogonal polynomials on the real line through the Szegő mapping. We also present a generalized two-point Hermite-Padé problem, whose solutions include multiple orthogonal polynomials of previous papers on the subject, as well as Laurent multiple orthogonal polynomials from the current paper, as special cases. Finally, we show that the Szegő recurrence relations naturally extend to the solutions of this generalized Hermite-Padé problem.

Abstract:We establish new explicit connections between classical (scalar) and matrix Gegenbauer polynomials, which result in new symmetries of the latter and further give access to several properties that have been out of reach before: generating functions, distribution of zeros for individual entries of the matrices and new type of differential-difference structure. We further speculate about other potentials of the connection formulas found. Part of our proofs makes use of creative telescoping in a matrix setting$-$the strategy which is not yet developed algorithmically.

Abstract:In this work, some theorems are established for orthogonal trigonometric polynomials (OTP) including Favard, Baxter, Geronimus, Rakhmanov, Szeg\"o and the strong Szeg\"o theorems which are important in the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle (OPUC). All these results are based on the mutual representation theorem of OPUC and OTP which deduced by a Riemann-Hilbert problem simultaneously characterizing them. In addition, Szeg\"o recursions, four-term recurrences and some new identities for OPUC and OTP are also obtained by using their Riemann-Hilbert characterizations respectively.

Abstract:We consider orthogonal polynomials on the surface of a double cone or a hyperboloid of revolution, either finite or infinite in axis direction, and on the solid domain bounded by such a surface and, when the surface is finite, by hyperplanes at the two ends. On each domain a family of orthogonal polynomials, related to the Gegebauer polynomials, is study and shown to share two characteristic properties of spherical harmonics: they are eigenfunctions of a second order linear differential operator with eigenvalues depending only on the polynomial degree, and they satisfy an addition formula that provides a closed form formula for the reproducing kernel of the orthogonal projection operator. The addition formula leads to a convolution structure, which provides a powerful tool for studying the Fourier orthogonal series on these domains. Furthermore, another family of orthogonal polynomials, related to the Hermite polynomials, is defined and shown to be the limit of the first family, and their properties are derived accordingly.

Abstract:We study orthogonal polynomials (OPs) for a weight function defined over a domain of revolution, where the domain is formed from rotating a two‐dimensional region and goes beyond the quadratic domains. Explicit constructions of orthogonal bases are provided for weight functions on a number of domains. Particular attention is paid to the setting when an orthogonal basis can be constructed explicitly in terms of known polynomials of either one or two variables. Several new families of OPs are derived, including a few families that are eigenfunctions of a spectral operator and their reproducing kernels satisfy an addition formula.

Abstract:This work explores classical discrete multiple orthogonal polynomials, including Hahn, Meixner of the first and second kinds, Kravchuk, and Charlier polynomials, with an arbitrary number of weights. Explicit expressions for the recursion coefficients of Hahn multiple orthogonal polynomials are derived. By leveraging the multiple Askey scheme and the recently discovered explicit hypergeometric representation of type I multiple Hahn polynomials, corresponding explicit hypergeometric representations are provided for the type I polynomials and recursion coefficients of all the aforementioned descendants within the Askey scheme. Additionally, integral representations for these families within the Hahn class in the Askey scheme are presented. The multiple Askey scheme is further completed by providing the corresponding limits for the weights, polynomials, and recurrence coefficients.

Abstract:In this note we revisit one of the first known examples of exceptional orthogonal polynomials that was introduced by Dubov, Eleonskii, and Kulagin in relation to nonharmonic oscillators with equidistant spectra. We dissect the DEK polynomials using the discrete Darboux transformations and unravel a characterization bypassing the differential equation that defines the DEK polynomials. This characterization also leads to a family of general orthogonal polynomials with missing degrees and this approach manifests its relation to biorthogonal polynomials introduced by Iserles and Nørsett, which are applicable to a whole range of problems in computational and applied analysis. We also obtain a modification of the Christoffel formula for this family since its classical form cannot be applied in this case.
