Abstract:We construct an intertwining map from the oscillator representation to the tensor product of two degenerate principal series of G and G′ which form a reductive dual pair in the sense of Howe. We derive results on local theta correspondence for the dual pairs (O(p, q), Sp(2q, R)), (U(p, q), U(q, q)) and (Sp(p, q), O*(4q)), where p⩾q. We also describe the correspondence completely for the pairs (O(p, q), SL(2, R)), (U(p, q)U(1, 1)), and (Sp(p, q), O*(4)).

Abstract:In this paper we consider a semigroup on trigonometric expansions $${\{{\mathcal T}_t: t \geq 0\}}$$ that will be called the Theta semigroup since its kernel is a multiple of θ3(x, q), the third Jacobi theta function. We study properties of this semigroup and prove that it is a positive diffusion semigroup. We also obtain that its subordinated semigroup is the classical Poisson semigroup. The extensions to higher dimensions and to periodic ultra distributions are also considered.

Abstract:Jacobi's theta relations among quartic products of theta functions are generalized to those of arbitrary $n$ products. Igusa's procedure of derivation is extended to prove such general theta relations, from which we obtain general addition formulas and theta constants identities. To complete the proof, the concept of {\it cycle number $\lambda$} is essential. The case of $n=3$ is discussed and examined explicitly.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the stochastic calculus for the theta process. The theta process is a stochastic process of number theoretical origin arising as a scaling limit of quadratic Weyl sums. It has several properties in common with Brownian motion such as its Hölder regularity, uncorrelated increments and quadratic variation. However, crucially, we show that the theta process is not a semimartingale, making Itô calculus techniques inapplicable. Instead, we use the celebrated rough paths theory to develop the stochastic calculus for the theta process. We do so by constructing the iterated integrals - the ``rough path" - above the theta process. Rough paths theory takes a signal and its iterated integrals and produces a vast and robust theory of stochastic differential equations. In addition, the rough path we construct can be described in terms of higher rank theta sums.

Abstract:We formulate general principles of building hypergeometric type series from the Jacobi theta functions that generalize the plain and basic hypergeometric series. Single and multivariable elliptic hypergeometric series are considered in detail. A characterization theorem for a single variable totally elliptic hypergeometric series is proved.

Abstract:A theta surface in affine 3-space is the zero set of a Riemann theta function in genus 3. This includes surfaces arising from special plane quartics that are singular or reducible. Lie and Poincaré showed that theta surfaces are precisely the surfaces of double translation, i.e. obtained as the Minkowski sum of two space curves in two different ways. These curves are parametrized by abelian integrals, so they are usually not algebraic. This paper offers a new view on this classical topic through the lens of computation. We present practical tools for passing between quartic curves and their theta surfaces, and we develop the numerical algebraic geometry of degenerations of theta functions.

Abstract:Assuming the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis, we prove a sharp upper bound on moments of shifted Dirichlet L‐functions. We use this to obtain conditional upper bounds on high moments of theta functions. Both of these results strengthen theorems of Munsch, who proved almost sharp upper bounds for these quantities. The main new ingredient of our proof comes from a paper of Harper, who showed the related result ∫0T|ζ(1/2+it)|2k≪kT(logT)k2 for all k⩾0 under the Riemann Hypothesis. Finally, we obtain a sharp conditional upper bound on high moments of character sums of arbitrary length.

KdV Equation for Theta Functions on Non-commutative Tori

Abstract:In the fields of non-commutative geometry and string theory, quantum tori appear in different mathematical and physical contexts. Therefore, quantized theta functions defined on quantum tori are also studied (Yu. I. Manin, A. Schwartz; note that a comparison between the two definitions of quantum theta is still an open problem). One important application of classical theta functions is in soliton theory. Certain soliton equations, including the KdV equation, have algebro-geometric solutions that are given by theta functions (we refer to F. Gesztesy and H. Holden), and as such belong to an "integrable hierarchy." While quantized integrability is a very active and complicated subject, in this work we take a different, naive approach. We conduct an experiment: using a definition of differentiation on quantum tori (M. Rieffel), we ask whether the quantum theta function satisfies non-linear PDE. The experiment is successful on the 2-torus and for the KdV equation. This opens the way to future investigations, such as the quest for a compatible hierarchy satisfied by quantum theta, and a consistent definition of complete integrability.

Abstract:In his "lost notebook'', Ramanujan used iterated derivatives of two theta functions to define sequences of $q$-series $\{U_{2t}(q)\}$ and $\{V_{2t}(q)\}$ that he claimed to be quasimodular. We give the first explicit proof of this claim by expressing them in terms of "partition Eisenstein series'', extensions of the classical Eisenstein series $E_{2k}(q)$ defined by $$\lambda=(1^{m_1}, 2^{m_2},\dots, n^{m_n}) \vdash n \ \ \ \ \ \longmapsto \ \ \ \ \ E_{\lambda}(q):= E_2(q)^{m_1} E_4(q)^{m_2}\cdots E_{2n}(q)^{m_n}. $$ For functions $\phi : \mathcal{P}\mapsto \mathbb{C}$ on partitions, the weight $2n$ partition Eisenstein trace is $$ \text{Tr}_n(\phi;q):=\sum_{\lambda \vdash n} \phi(\lambda)E_{\lambda}(q). $$ For all $t$, we prove that $U_{2t}(q)=\text{Tr}_t(\phi_U;q)$ and $V_{2t}(q)=\text{Tr}_t(\phi_V;q),$ where $\phi_U$ and $\phi_V$ are natural partition weights, giving the first explicit quasimodular formulas for these series.

Abstract:The monodromy of the Casimir connection is considered. It is shown that the trace of the monodromy operator over an appropriate space of flat sections gives the Jacobi theta constant and incomplete theta functions. A definition of new objects, namely, incomplete Appell–Lerch sums, is given, and their connection with the trace of the monodromy operator is revealed.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, Volume 45, Issue 1, Page 504-528, March 2024. We present a theory for general partial derivatives of matrix functions of the form [math], where [math] is a matrix path of several variables ([math]). Building on results by Mathias [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 17 (1996), pp. 610–620] for the first order derivative, we develop a block upper triangular form for higher order partial derivatives. This block form is used to derive conditions for existence and a generalized Daleckiĭ–Kreĭn formula for higher order derivatives. We show that certain specializations of this formula lead to classical formulas of quantum perturbation theory. We show how our results are related to earlier results for higher order Fréchet derivatives. Block forms of complex step approximations are introduced, and we show how those are related to evaluation of derivatives through the upper triangular form. These relations are illustrated with numerical examples.

Abstract:In this note we deduce well known modular identities for Jacobi theta functions using the spectral representations associated with the real valued Brownian motion taking values on $[-1,+1]$. We consider two cases: (i) reflection at $-1$ and $+1$, (ii) killing at $-1$ and $+1$. It is seen that these two representations give, in a sense, most compact forms of the modular theta-function identities. We study also discrete Gaussian distributions generated by theta functions, and derive, in particular, addition formulas for discrete Gaussian variables.

Abstract:Special functions like the polygamma, Hurwitz zeta, and Lerch zeta functions have sporadically been connected with the nth derivatives of trigonometric functions. We show the polylogarithm $\text{Li}_s(z)$, a function of complex argument and order $z$ and $s$, encodes the nth derivatives of the cotangent, tangent, cosecant and secant functions, and their hyperbolic equivalents, at negative integer orders $s = -n$. We then show how at the same orders, the polylogarithm represents the nth application of the operator $x \frac{d}{dx}$ on the inverse trigonometric and hyperbolic functions. Finally, we construct a sum relating two polylogarithms of order $-n$ to a linear combination of polylogarithms of orders $s = 0, -1, -2, ..., -n$.
