Abstract: We investigate the Non-Commutative Abelian Higgs model. We argue that it is possible to introduce a consistent renormalization method by imposing the Non-commutative BRST invariance of the theory and by introducing the Non-Commutative Quasi-Classical Action Principle.

Abstract:The Higgs-strahlung process e(+)e(-) -> ZH and pair production process e(+)e(-) -> HH are studied in the framework of the minimal noncommutative (NC) standard model. In particular, the Feynman rules involving all orders of the noncommutative parameter theta are derived using reclusive formation of the Seiberg-Witten map. It is shown that the total cross section and angular distribution can be significantly affected because of space-time noncommutativity when the collision energy exceeds to 1 TeV. It is found that in each process, there is an optimal collision energy (E-oc) for achieving the greatest noncommutative effect, and E-oc varies linearly with the NC scale Lambda(NC). A brief discussion on the process e+e- -> mu(+)mu(-) is also given.

Abstract:We review the noncommutative approach to the standard model. We start with the introduction if the mathematical concepts necessary for the definition of noncommutative spaces, and manifold in particular. This defines the framework of spectral geometry. This is applied to the standard model of particle interaction, discussing the fermionic and bosonic spectral action. The issues relating to the calculation of the mass of the Higgs are discussed, as well as the role of neutrinos and Wick rotations. Finally, we present the possibility of solving the problem of the Higgs mass by considering a pregeometric grand symmetry.

Abelian Higgs gauge theories with multicomponent scalar fields and multiparameter scalar potentials

Abstract:We consider multicomponent Abelian Higgs (AH) gauge theories with multiparameter scalar quartic potentials that are extensions, with a smaller global symmetry group, of $SU(N)$-invariant AH theories. In particular, we consider an AH model with a two-parameter scalar potential and $SO(N)$ global symmetry. We discuss the renormalization-group flow of the $SO(N)$-invariant AH field theory and the phase diagram and critical behavior of a corresponding three-dimensional (3D) noncompact lattice AH model. We argue that the phase diagram of 3D noncompact $SO(N)$- and $SU(N)$-symmetric lattice AH models are qualitatively similar. In both cases there are three phases: the high-temperature Coulomb phase, and the low-temperature molecular and Higgs phases that differ for the topological properties of the gauge correlations. However, the main features of the low-temperature ordered phases, and in particular of the Higgs phase, differ significantly in $SO(N)$ and $SU(N)$ models. In particular, in $SO(N)$ models they depend on the sign of the self-interaction parameter $v$ that controls the symmetry breaking from $SU(N)$ to $SO(N)$. As a consequence, also the universal features of the transitions related with the spontaneous breaking of the global symmetry (those between the high-temperature Coulomb phase and the low-temperature molecular and Higgs phases) depend on the sign of $v$.

Working towards a gauge-invariant description of the Higgs model: from local composite operators to spectral density functions

Abstract:We analyze different BRST invariant solutions for the introduction of a mass term in Yang-Mills (YM) theories. First, we analyze the non-local composite gauge-invariant field $A^h_{\mu}(x)$, which can be localized by the Stueckelberg-like field $\xi^a(x)$. This enables us to introduce a mass term in the $SU(N)$ YM model, a feature that has been indicated at a non-perturbative level by both analytical and numerical studies. We also consider the unitary Abelian Higgs model and investigate its spectral functions at one-loop order. This analysis allows to disentangle what is physical and what is not at the level of the elementary particle propagators, in conjunction with the Nielsen identities. We highlight the role of the tadpole graphs and the gauge choices to get sensible results. We also introduce an Abelian Curci-Ferrari action coupled to a scalar field to model a massive photon which, like the non-Abelian Curci-Ferarri model, is left invariant by a modified non-nilpotent BRST symmetry. Finally, the spectral properties of a set of local gauge-invariant composite operators are investigated in the $U(1)$ and $SU(2)$ Higgs model quantized in the 't Hooft $R_{\xi}$ gauge. These operators enable us to give a gauge-invariant description of the spectrum of the theory, thereby surpassing certain incommodities when using the standard elementary fields. The corresponding two-point correlation functions are evaluated at one-loop order and their spectral functions are obtained explicitly. It is shown that the spectral functions of the elementary fields suffer from a strong unphysical dependence from the gauge parameter $\xi$, and can even exhibit positivity violating behaviour. In contrast, the BRST invariant local operators exhibit a well defined positive spectral density.

Abstract:We consider the Standard Model on a non-commutative space and expand the action in the non-commutativity parameter theta. No new particles are introduced, the structure group is SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1). We derive the leading order action. At zeroth order the action coincides with the ordinary Standard Model. At leading order in theta we find new vertices which are absent in the Standard Model on commutative space-time. The most striking features are couplings between quarks, gluons and electroweak bosons and many new vertices in the charged and neutral currents. We find that parity is violated in non-commutative QCD. The Higgs mechanism can be applied. QED is not deformed in the minimal version of the NCSM to the order considered.

Abstract:The Abelian gauge symmetry proposed by Hermann Weyl is generalized to its non-Abelian extension. Afterwards the standard model is generalized to incorporate the Abelian and non-Abelian Weyl symmetry. This symmetry extension brings new gauge particles that can be potential candidates for the dark matter. It also naturally introduces a second scalar field into the theory. The breaking of the Weyl symmetry turns this scalar field into a dimensional constant, making the Higgs as the only scalar component in the standard model. In addition to the expected benefits, there are three unexpected bonuses: (1) it brings some new understanding of the parity violation; (2) it provides an answer to the sign problem in the Higgs mechanism; (3) it gives some new perspectives on the nature of the neutrino: non-Abelian Weyl symmetry demands that there \textit{must be} right-handed netrino; furthermore, the smallness of the neutrino mass is protected by the non-Abelian Weyl symmetry.

Abstract:N-Higgs doublet models (NHDM) are a popular framework to construct electroweak symmetry breaking mechanisms beyond the Standard model. Usually, one builds an NHDM scalar sector which is invariant under a certain symmetry group. Although several such groups have been used, no general analysis of symmetries possible in the NHDM scalar sector exists. Here, we make the first step towards this goal by classifying the elementary building blocks, namely the abelian symmetry groups, with a special emphasis on finite groups. We describe a strategy that identifies all abelian groups which are realizable as symmetry groups of the NHDM Higgs potential. We consider both the groups of Higgs-family transformations only and the groups which also contain generalized CP transformations. We illustrate this strategy with the examples of 3HDM and 4HDM and prove several statements for arbitrary N.

Abstract:The presence of gauge symmetry in 1+1D is known to be redundant, since it does not imply the existence of dynamical gauge bosons. As a consequence, in the continuum, the Abelian-Higgs model, the theory of bosonic matter interacting with photons, just possesses a single phase, as the higher dimensional Higgs and Coulomb phases are connected via non-perturbative effects. However, recent research published in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 090601 (2022)] has revealed an unexpected phase transition when the system is discretized on the lattice. This transition is described by a conformal field theory with a central charge of $c=3/2$. In this paper, we aim to characterize the two components of this $c=3/2$ theory -- namely the free Majorana fermionic and bosonic parts -- through equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium spectral analyses.

Is the real two-Higgs-doublet model consistent?

Abstract:We provide strong evidence that the widely-studied real two-Higgs-doublet model is inconsistent under renormalization due to quark-induced divergent CP violation (CPV). We identify the necessary ingredients for the CPV to enter the renormalization-group equations based on symmetry proprieties of the divergent diagrams. We demonstrate that while these ingredients are present starting at six loops, the divergent CPV is zero at that order due to approximate symmetries. We show that these symmetries are broken at seven loops and determine the parameter dependence of the resulting divergent CPV.

Abstract:A composite non-abelian model $SU(N) \times SU(N)$ is proposed as possible extension of the Yang-Mills symmetry. We obtain the corresponding gauge symmetry of the model and the most general lagrangian invariant by $SU(N) \times SU(N)$. The corresponding Feynman rules of the model are studied. Propagators and vertices are derived in the momentum space. As physical application, instead of considering the color symmetry $SU_{c}(3)$ for $QCD$ , we substitute it by the combination $SU_{c}(3) \times SU_{c}(3)$. It yields a possibility to go beyond $QCD$ symmetry in the sense that quarks are preserved with three colors. This extension provides composite quarks in triplets and sextets multiplets accomplished with the usual massless gluons plus massive gluons. We present a power counting analysis that satisfies the renormalization conditions as well as one studies the structure of radiative corrections to one loop approximation. Unitary condition is verified at tree level. Tachyons are avoided. For end, one extracts a BRST symmetry from lagrangian and Slavnov-Taylor identities.

The Coulomb-Higgs phase transition of three-dimensional lattice Abelian-Higgs gauge models with noncompact gauge variables and gauge fixing

Abstract:We study the critical behavior of three-dimensional (3D) lattice Abelian-Higgs (AH) gauge models with noncompact gauge variables and multicomponent complex scalar fields, along the transition line between the Coulomb and Higgs phases. Previous works that focused on gauge-invariant correlations provided evidence that, for a sufficiently large number of scalar components, these transitions are continuous and associated with the stable charged fixed point of the renormalization-group flow of the 3D AH field theory (scalar electrodynamics), in which charged scalar matter is minimally coupled with an electromagnetic field. Here we extend these studies by considering gauge-dependent correlations of the gauge and matter fields, in the presence of two different gauge fixings, the Lorenz and the axial gauge fixing. Our results for N=25 are definitely consistent with the predictions of the AH field theory and therefore provide additional evidence for the characterization of the 3D AH transitions along the Coulomb-Higgs line as charged transitions in the AH field-theory universality class. Moreover, our results give additional insights on the role of the gauge fixing at charged transitions. In particular, we show that scalar correlations are critical only if a hard Lorenz gauge fixing is imposed.

Interplay of Chiral Transitions in the Standard Model

Abstract:We investigate nonperturbative aspects of the interplay of chiral transitions in the standard model in the course of the renormalization flow. We focus on the chiral symmetry breaking mechanisms provided by the QCD and the electroweak sectors, the latter of which we model by a Higgs-top-bottom Yukawa theory. The interplay becomes quantitatively accessible by accounting for the fluctuation-induced mixing of the electroweak Higgs field with the mesonic composite fields of QCD. In fact, our approach uses dynamical bosonization and treats these scalar fields on the same footing. Varying the QCD scale relative to the Fermi scale we quantify the mutual impact of the symmetry-breaking mechanisms, specifically the departure from the second order quantum phase transition of the pure Yukawa sector in favor of a crossover upon the inclusion of the gauge interactions. This allows to discuss the ``naturalness'' of the standard model in terms of a pseudo-critical exponent which we determine as a function of the ratio of the QCD and the Fermi scale. We also estimate the minimum value of the $W$ boson mass in absence of the Higgs mechanism.

Abstract:We derive a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model from a non-local gauge theory and show that it has confining properties at low energies. In particular, we present an extended approach to non-local QCD and a complete revision of the technique of Bender, Milton and Savage applied to non-local theories, providing a set of Dyson--Schwinger equations in differential form. In the local case, we obtain closed form solutions in the simplest case of the scalar field and extend it to the Yang--Mills field. In general, for non-local theories, we use a perturbative technique and a Fourier series and show how higher-order harmonics are heavily damped due to the presence of the non-local factor. The spectrum of the theory is analysed for the non-local Yang--Mills sector and found to be in agreement with the local results on the lattice in the limit of the non-locality mass parameter running to infinity. In the non-local case, we confine ourselves to a non-locality mass that is sufficiently large compared to the mass scale arising from the integration of the Dyson--Schwinger equations. Such a choice results in good agreement, in the proper limit, with the spectrum of the local theory. We derive the gap equation for the fermions in the theory that gives some indication of quark confinement in the non-local NJL case as well. Confinement seems to be a rather ubiquitous effect that removes some degrees of freedom in the original action, favouring the appearance of new observable states, as seen, e.g.,\ for quantum chromodynamics at lower energies.

Abstract:Gauge-invariant quantum fields are constructed in an Abelian power-counting renormalizable gauge theory with both scalar, vector and fermionic matter content. This extends previous results already obtained for the gauge-invariant description of the Higgs mode via a propagating gauge-invariant field. The renormalization of the model is studied in the Algebraic Renormalization approach. The decomposition of Slavnov-Taylor identities into separately invariant sectors is analyzed. We also comment on some non-renormalizable extensions of the model whose 1-PI Green's functions are the flows of certain differential equations of the homogeneous Euler type, exactly resumming the dependence on a certain set of dim. 6 and dim. 8 derivative operators. The latter are identified uniquely by the condition that they span the mass and kinetic terms in the gauge-invariant dynamical fields. The construction can be extended to non-Abelian gauge groups.

Abstract:The one-loop renormalization of the abelian Higgs-Kibble model in a general 't Hooft gauge and with chiral fermions is fully worked out within dimensional renormalization scheme with a non-anticommuting $\gamma_5$. The anomalous terms introduced in the Slavnov-Taylor identities by the minimal subtraction algorithm are calculated and the asymmetric counterterms needed to restore the BRS symmetry, if the anomaly cancellation conditions are met, are computed. The computations draw heavily from regularized action principles and Algebraic Renormalization theory.

Abstract:The gauged linear sigma model（GLSM for short） is a 2 d quantum field theory introduced by Witten twenty years ago. Since then, it has been investigated extensively in physics by Hori and others. Recently, an algebro-geometric theory（for both abelian and nonabelian GLSMs） was developed by the author and his collaborators so that he can start to rigorously compute its invariants and check against physical predications. The abelian GLSM was relatively better understood and is the focus of current mathematical investigation. In this article, the author would like to look over the horizon and consider the nonabelian GLSM. The nonabelian case possesses some new features unavailable to the abelian GLSM. To aid the future mathematical development, the author surveys some of the key problems inspired by physics in the nonabelian GLSM.
