Abstract:It is shown how string-localized QFT predicts interactions of the Standard Model. Detailed computations are presented for various non-abelian models: Yang-Mills, QCD, Higgs-Kibble. They serve as backup for [11,12] and as "proof of concept" for the treatment of the full Standard Model [4,5].

Abstract:A new approach to the construction of interacting quantum field theories on two-dimensional Minkowski space is discussed. In this program, models are obtained from a prescribed factorizing S-matrix in two steps. At first, quantum fields which are localized in infinitely extended, wedge-shaped regions of Minkowski space are constructed explicitly. In the second step, local observables are analyzed with operator-algebraic techniques, in particular by using the modular nuclearity condition of Buchholz, d’Antoni and Longo.Besides a model-independent result regarding the Reeh–Schlieder property of the vacuum in this framework, an infinite class of quantum field theoretic models with non-trivial interaction is constructed. This construction completes a program initiated by Schroer in a large family of theories, a particular example being the Sinh-Gordon model. The crucial problem of establishing the existence of local observables in these models is solved by verifying the modular nuclearity condition, which here amounts to a condition on analytic properties of form factors of observables localized in wedge regions.It is shown that the constructed models solve the inverse scattering problem for the considered class of S-matrices. Moreover, a proof of asymptotic completeness is obtained by explicitly computing total sets of scattering states. The structure of these collision states is found to be in agreement with the heuristic formulae underlying the Zamolodchikov-Faddeev algebra.

Finite Matrix Model of Quantum Hall Fluids on S2

Abstract:Based on Haldane's spherical geometrical formalism of the two-dimensional quantum Hall fluids, the relation between the noncommutative geometry of S2 and the two-dimensional quantum Hall fluids is exhibited. A finite matrix model on the two-sphere is explicitly constucted as an effective description of the fractional quantum Hall fluids of finite extent, and the complete sets of physical quantum states of this matrix model are determined. We also describe how the low-lying excitations in the model are constructed in terms of the quasi-particle and quasi-hole excitations. It is shown that there exists a Haldane hierarchical structure in the two-dimensional quantum Hall fluid states of the matrix model. These hierarchical fluid states are generated by the parent fluid state by condensing the quasi-particle and quasi-hole excitations level by level.
A New Nonperturbative Approach for Nonlocal Conserved Currents

Abstract:Based on the chiral quantization, we develop a nonperturbative method for nonlocal conserved currents for Toda-type integrable systems. The sine-Gordon model and the ZMS model are dealt with uniformly in this scheme, just as these two models are treated in the perturbed CFT framework. Although there only exist two nonlocal conserved charges, this scheme can provide all the useful data of physics concerned, e.g., the braiding relations, the spectra-dependent S-matrices of the solitons, etc.

Abstract:A composite non-abelian model $SU(N) \times SU(N)$ is proposed as possible extension of the Yang-Mills symmetry. We obtain the corresponding gauge symmetry of the model and the most general lagrangian invariant by $SU(N) \times SU(N)$. The corresponding Feynman rules of the model are studied. Propagators and vertices are derived in the momentum space. As physical application, instead of considering the color symmetry $SU_{c}(3)$ for $QCD$ , we substitute it by the combination $SU_{c}(3) \times SU_{c}(3)$. It yields a possibility to go beyond $QCD$ symmetry in the sense that quarks are preserved with three colors. This extension provides composite quarks in triplets and sextets multiplets accomplished with the usual massless gluons plus massive gluons. We present a power counting analysis that satisfies the renormalization conditions as well as one studies the structure of radiative corrections to one loop approximation. Unitary condition is verified at tree level. Tachyons are avoided. For end, one extracts a BRST symmetry from lagrangian and Slavnov-Taylor identities.

Renormalisable Non-local Quark-Gluon Interaction: Mass Gap, Chiral Symmetry Breaking & Scale Invariance

Abstract:We derive a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model from a non-local gauge theory and show that it has confining properties at low energies. In particular, we present an extended approach to non-local QCD and a complete revision of the technique of Bender, Milton and Savage applied to non-local theories, providing a set of Dyson--Schwinger equations in differential form. In the local case, we obtain closed form solutions in the simplest case of the scalar field and extend it to the Yang--Mills field. In general, for non-local theories, we use a perturbative technique and a Fourier series and show how higher-order harmonics are heavily damped due to the presence of the non-local factor. The spectrum of the theory is analysed for the non-local Yang--Mills sector and found to be in agreement with the local results on the lattice in the limit of the non-locality mass parameter running to infinity. In the non-local case, we confine ourselves to a non-locality mass that is sufficiently large compared to the mass scale arising from the integration of the Dyson--Schwinger equations. Such a choice results in good agreement, in the proper limit, with the spectrum of the local theory. We derive the gap equation for the fermions in the theory that gives some indication of quark confinement in the non-local NJL case as well. Confinement seems to be a rather ubiquitous effect that removes some degrees of freedom in the original action, favouring the appearance of new observable states, as seen, e.g.,\ for quantum chromodynamics at lower energies.

Abstract:Successful applications of a conceptually novel setup of Quantum Field Theory, that accounts for all subtheories of the Standard Model (QED, Electroweak Interaction and Higgs, Yang-Mills and QCD) and beyond (Helicity 2), call for a perspective view in a broader conceptual context. The setting is "autonomous" in the sense of being intrinsically quantum. Its principles are: Hilbert space, Poincaré symmetry and causality. Its free quantum fields are obtained from Wigner's unitary representations of the Poincaré group, with only physical and observable degrees of freedom. A "quantization" of an "underlying" classical theory is not needed. It allows renormalizable perturbation theory with interactions whose detailed structure, and in some cases even the particle content, is predicted by internal consistency. The results confirm and extend observable predictions for the interactions of the SM without assuming a "principle" of gauge invariance.

Abstract:We consider the Standard Model on a non-commutative space and expand the action in the non-commutativity parameter theta. No new particles are introduced, the structure group is SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1). We derive the leading order action. At zeroth order the action coincides with the ordinary Standard Model. At leading order in theta we find new vertices which are absent in the Standard Model on commutative space-time. The most striking features are couplings between quarks, gluons and electroweak bosons and many new vertices in the charged and neutral currents. We find that parity is violated in non-commutative QCD. The Higgs mechanism can be applied. QED is not deformed in the minimal version of the NCSM to the order considered.

The Sine-Gordon QFT in de Sitter spacetime

Abstract:We consider the massless Sine-Gordon model in de Sitter spacetime, in the regime $\beta^2 < 4 \pi$ and using the framework of perturbative algebraic quantum field theory. We show that a Fock space representation exists for the free massless field, but that the natural one-parameter family of vacuum-like states breaks the de Sitter boost symmetries. We prove convergence of the perturbative series for the S matrix in this representation, and construct the interacting Haag-Kastler net of local algebras from the relative S matrices. We show that the net fulfills isotony, locality and de Sitter covariance (in the algebraic adiabatic limit), even though the states that we consider are not invariant. We furthermore prove convergence of the perturbative series for the interacting field and the vertex operators, and verify that the interacting equation of motion holds.

Abstract:The gauged linear sigma model（GLSM for short） is a 2 d quantum field theory introduced by Witten twenty years ago. Since then, it has been investigated extensively in physics by Hori and others. Recently, an algebro-geometric theory（for both abelian and nonabelian GLSMs） was developed by the author and his collaborators so that he can start to rigorously compute its invariants and check against physical predications. The abelian GLSM was relatively better understood and is the focus of current mathematical investigation. In this article, the author would like to look over the horizon and consider the nonabelian GLSM. The nonabelian case possesses some new features unavailable to the abelian GLSM. To aid the future mathematical development, the author surveys some of the key problems inspired by physics in the nonabelian GLSM.
String Inspired QCD and $E_6$ Models

Abstract:The work in this thesis consists of two distinct parts: A class of models called, ``String-flip potential models,'' (SFP's) are studied as a possible candidate for modeling nuclear matter in terms of constituent quarks. These models are inspired from lattice quantum-chromodynamics (QCD) and are nonperturbative in nature. It is shown that they are viable candidates for modeling nuclear matter since they reproduce most of the bulk properties except for nuclear binding. Their properties are studied in nuclear and mesonic matter. A new class of models is developed, called ``flux-bubble potential models,'' which allows for the SFP's to be extended to include perturbative QCD interactions. Attempts to obtain nuclear binding is not successful, but valuable insight was gained towards possible future directions to pursue. The possibility of studying Superstring inspired $E_6$ phenomenology at high energy hadron colliders is investigated. The production of heavy lepton pairs {\it via} a gluon-gluon fusion mechanism is discussed. An enhancement in the parton level cross-section is expected due to the heavy (s)fermion loops which couple to the gluons.

Anomalous $U(1)$ extension of the Standard Model

Abstract:We present a set of example models in which the Standard Model (SM) symmetry group is extended by a new abelian symmetry. This additional symmetry appears anomalous in the effective low-energy theory; however, the anomalies cancel out when massive chiral fermions not present in the effective low-energy theory are taken into account. These chiral fermions under the new abelian gauge group, are chosen to be vector-like under the SM symmetries, and reside in the same representations as quarks and leptons. This allows us to quantitatively determine the magnitude of tree-level interactions between three vector bosons induced in low-energy effective field theory by the integration of chiral heavy fermions. We also examine the perturbativity constraints of the theory and the ultraviolet cut-off. We conclude by highlighting possible extensions of our work.

Abstract:We show that the $4d$ ${\cal N}=1$ $SU(3)$ $N_f=6$ SQCD is the model obtained when compactifying the rank one E-string theory on a three punctured sphere (a trinion) with a particular value of flux. The $SU(6)\times SU(6)\times U(1)$ global symmetry of the theory, when decomposed into the $SU(2)^3\times U(1)^3\times SU(6)$ subgroup, corresponds to the three $SU(2)$ symmetries associated to the three punctures and the $U(1)^3 \times SU(6)$ subgroup of the $E_8$ symmetry of the E-string theory. All the puncture symmetries are manifest in the UV and thus we can construct ordinary Lagrangians flowing in the IR to any compactification of the E-string theory. We generalize this claim and argue that the ${\cal N}=1$ $SU(N+2)$ SQCD in the middle of the conformal window, $N_f=2N+4$, is the theory obtained by compactifying the $6d$ minimal $(D_{N+3},D_{N+3})$ conformal matter SCFT on a sphere with two maximal $SU(N+1)$ punctures, one minimal $SU(2)$ puncture, and with a particular value of flux. The $SU(2N+4)\times SU(2N+4)\times U(1)$ symmetry of the UV Lagrangian decomposes into $SU(N+1)^2\times SU(2)$ puncture symmetries and the $U(1)^3\times SU(2N+4)$ subgroup of the $SO(12+4N)$ symmetry group of the $6d$ SCFT. The models constructed from the trinions exhibit a variety of interesting strong coupling effects. For example, one of the dualities arising geometrically from different pair-of-pants decompositions of a four punctured sphere is an $SU(N+2)$ generalization of the Intriligator-Pouliot duality of $SU(2)$ SQCD with $N_f=4$, which is a degenerate, $N=0$, instance of our discussion.

Ensuring locality in QFT via string-local fields

Abstract:String-local fields constitute a relatively new tool for solving quantum field theory, stressing and embodying locality and positivity. We examine here their usefulness -- as well as some drawbacks. Starting from just the physical masses and charges of the known particles, and bringing string independence in the Bogoliubov-Epstein-Glaser (BEG) theory framework, regarded as a means of discovery, one finds the allowed couplings of quantum fields associated to those particles, and thereby recovers all of the Standard Model (SM) without invoking theoretical prejudices. One of the outcomes is the requirement that the fields be governed by reductive Lie algebras. Another is the need for at least one scalar particle. Yet another is chirality of interactions mediated by massive particles. There is no room in this formulation for ``global'' gauge invariance as an a priori construct. Armed with this modern weapon, we reassess here a few classical and recent conundra. In particular, we examine new perspectives in cosmology from the adoption of string-local fields.

Abstract:The unitary $N = 2$ superconformal minimal models have a long history in string theory and mathematical physics, while their non-unitary (and logarithmic) cousins have recently attracted interest from mathematicians. Here, we give an efficient and uniform analysis of all these models as an application of a type of Schur-Weyl duality, as it pertains to the well-known Kazama-Suzuki coset construction. The results include straightforward classifications of the irreducible modules, branching rules, (super)characters and (Grothendieck) fusion rules.

Non-Abelian generalizations of the Hofstadter model: spin-orbit-coupled butterfly pairs

Abstract:The Hofstadter model, well known for its fractal butterfly spectrum, describes two-dimensional electrons under a perpendicular magnetic field, which gives rise to the integer quantum Hall effect. Inspired by the real-space building blocks of non-Abelian gauge fields from a recent experiment, we introduce and theoretically study two non-Abelian generalizations of the Hofstadter model. Each model describes two pairs of Hofstadter butterflies that are spin-orbit coupled. In contrast to the original Hofstadter model that can be equivalently studied in the Landau and symmetric gauges, the corresponding non-Abelian generalizations exhibit distinct spectra due to the non-commutativity of the gauge fields. We derive the genuine (necessary and sufficient) non-Abelian condition for the two models from the commutativity of their arbitrary loop operators. At zero energy, the models are gapless and host Weyl and Dirac points protected by internal and crystalline symmetries. Double (8-fold), triple (12-fold), and quadrupole (16-fold) Dirac points also emerge, especially under equal hopping phases of the non-Abelian potentials. At other fillings, the gapped phases of the models give rise to topological insulators. We conclude by discussing possible schemes for experimental realization of the models on photonic platforms.

Abstract:The density of states of Yang-Mills integrals in the supersymmetric case is characterized by power-law tails whose decay is independent of N, the rank of the gauge group. It is believed that this has no counterpart in matrix models, but we construct a matrix model that exactly exhibits this property. In addition, we show that the eigenfunctions employed to construct the matrix model are invariant under the collinear subgroup of conformal transformations, SL(2,R). We also show that the matrix model itself is invariant under a fractional linear transformation. The wave functions of the model appear in the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential and in free relativistic motion on AdS space.

Inhomogeneous XX spin chains and quasi-exactly solvable models

Abstract:We establish a direct connection between inhomogeneous XX spin chains (or free fermion systems with nearest-neighbors hopping) and certain QES models on the line giving rise to a family of weakly orthogonal polynomials. We classify all such models and their associated XX chains, which include two families related to the Lamé (finite gap) quantum potential on the line. For one of these chains, we numerically compute the Rényi bipartite entanglement entropy at half filling and derive an asymptotic approximation thereof by studying the model's continuous limit, which turns out to describe a massless Dirac fermion on a suitably curved background. We show that the leading behavior of the entropy is that of a $c=1$ critical system, although there is a subleading $\log(\log N)$ correction (where $N$ is the number of sites) unusual in this type of models.

A solvable non-unitary fermionic long-range model with extended symmetry

Abstract:We define and study a long-range version of the XX model, arising as the free-fermion point of the XXZ-type Haldane--Shastry (HS) chain. It has a description via non-unitary fermions, based on the free-fermion Temperley--Lieb algebra, and may also be viewed as an alternating $\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)$ spin chain. Even and odd length behave very differently; we focus on odd length. The model is integrable, and we explicitly identify two commuting hamiltonians. While non-unitary, their spectrum is real by PT-symmetry. One hamiltonian is chiral and quadratic in fermions, while the other is parity-invariant and quartic. Their one-particle spectra have two linear branches, realising a massless relativistic dispersion on the lattice. The appropriate fermionic modes arise from 'quasi-translation' symmetry, which replaces ordinary translation symmetry. The model exhibits exclusion statistics, like the isotropic HS chain, with even more 'extended symmetry' and larger degeneracies.
