Abstract:The classification problem of $P$- and $Q$-polynomial association schemes has been one of the central problems in algebraic combinatorics. Generalizing the concept of $P$- and $Q$-polynomial association schemes to multivariate cases, namely to consider higher rank $P$- and $Q$-polynomial association schemes, has been tried by some authors, but it seems that so far there were neither very well-established definition nor results. Very recently, Bernard, Crampé, d'Andecy, Vinet, and Zaimi [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2212.10824" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.10824">arXiv:2212.10824</a>], defined bivariate $P$-polynomial association schemes, as well as bivariate $Q$-polynomial association schemes. In this paper, we study these concepts and propose a new modified definition concerning a general monomial order, which is more general and more natural and also easy to handle. We prove that there are many interesting families of examples of multivariate $P$- and/or $Q$-polynomial association schemes.

Abstract:Bivariate P-polynomial association scheme of type $(\alpha,\beta)$ are defined as a generalization of the P-polynomial association schemes. This generalization is shown to be equivalent to a set of conditions on the intersection parameters. A number of known higher rank association schemes are seen to belong to this broad class. Bivariate Q-polynomial association schemes are similarly defined.

Abstract:The study of $P$-polynomial association schemes (distance-regular graphs) and $Q$-polynomial association schemes, and in particular $P$- and $Q$-polynomial association schemes, has been a central theme not only in the theory of association schemes but also in the whole study of algebraic combinatorics in general. Leonard's theorem (1982) says that the spherical functions (or the character tables) of $P$- and $Q$-polynomial association schemes are described by Askey-Wilson orthogonal polynomials or their relatives. These polynomials are one-variable orthogonal polynomials. It seems that the new attempt to define and study higher rank $P$- and $Q$-polynomial association schemes had been hoped for, but had gotten only limited success. Abstract:The bivariate $P$- and $Q$-polynomial structures of association schemes based on attenuated spaces are examined using recurrence and difference relations of the bivariate polynomials which form the eigenvalues of the scheme. These bispectral properties are obtained from contiguity relations of univariate dual $q$-Hahn and affine $q$-Krawtchouk polynomials. The bispectral algebra associated to the bivariate polynomials is investigated, as well as the subconstituent algebra of the schemes. The properties of the schemes are compared to those of the non-binary Johnson schemes through a limit.

Quantum Channels from Association Schemes

Abstract:We propose in this note the study of quantum channels from association schemes. This is done by interpreting the (0,1)-matrices of a scheme as the Kraus operators of a channel. Working in the framework of one-shot zero-error information theory, we give bounds and closed formulas for various independence numbers of the relative non-commutative (confusability) graphs, or, equivalently, graphical operator systems. We use pseudocyclic association schemes as an example. In this case, we show that the unitary entanglement-assisted independence number grows at least quadratically faster, with respect to matrix size, than the independence number. The latter parameter was introduced by Beigi and Shor as a generalization of the one-shot Shannon capacity, in analogy with the corresponding graph-theoretic notion.

Abstract:The notion of multivariate $P$- and $Q$-polynomial association scheme has been introduced recently, generalizing the well-known univariate case. Numerous examples of such association schemes have already been exhibited. In particular, it has been demonstrated that the non-binary Johnson scheme is a bivariate $P$-polynomial association scheme. We show here that it is also a bivariate $Q$-polynomial association scheme for some parameters. This provides, with the $P$-polynomial structure, the bispectral property (i.e. the recurrence and difference relations) of a family of bivariate orthogonal polynomials made out of univariate Krawtchouk and dual Hahn polynomials. The algebra based on the bispectral operators is also studied together with the subconstituent algebra of this association scheme.

Abstract:The goal of this article is to display a $Q$-polynomial structure for the Attenuated Space poset $\mathcal A_q(N,M)$. The poset $\mathcal A_q(N,M)$ is briefly described as follows. Start with an $(N+M)$-dimensional vector space $H$ over a finite field with $q$ elements. Fix an $M$-dimensional subspace $h$ of $H$. The vertex set $X$ of $\mathcal A_q(N,M)$ consists of the subspaces of $H$ that have zero intersection with $h$. The partial order on $X$ is the inclusion relation. The $Q$-polynomial structure involves two matrices $A, A^* \in {\rm Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$ with the following entries. For $y, z \in X$ the matrix $A$ has $(y,z)$-entry $1$ (if $y$ covers $z$); $q^{{\rm dim}\,y}$ (if $z$ covers $y$); and 0 (if neither of $y,z$ covers the other). The matrix $A^*$ is diagonal, with $(y,y)$-entry $q^{-{\rm dim}\,y}$ for all $y\in X$. By construction, $A^*$ has $N+1$ eigenspaces. By construction, $A$ acts on these eigenspaces in a (block) tridiagonal fashion. We show that $A$ is diagonalizable, with $2N+1$ eigenspaces. We show that $A^*$ acts on these eigenspaces in a (block) tridiagonal fashion. Using this action, we show that $A$ is $Q$-polynomial. We show that $A, A^*$ satisfy a pair of relations called the tridiagonal relations. We consider the subalgebra $T$ of ${\rm Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$ generated by $A, A^*$. We show that $A,A^*$ act on each irreducible $T$-module as a Leonard pair.

Abstract:We study a relationship between $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs and the double affine Hecke algebra of type $(C^{\vee}_1,C_1)$. Let $\Gamma$ denote a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph with vertex set $X$. We assume that $\Gamma$ has $q$-Racah type and contains a Delsarte clique $C$. Fix a vertex $x \in C$. We partition $X$ according to the path-length distance to both $x$ and $C$. This is an equitable partition. For each cell in this partition, consider the corresponding characteristic vector. These characteristic vectors form a basis for a $\mathbb{C}$-vector space ${\bf W}$. The universal double affine Hecke algebra of type $(C^{\vee}_1,C_1)$ is the $\mathbb{C}$-algebra $\hat{H}_q$ defined by generators $\{t^{\pm1}_n\}^3_{n=0}$ and relations (i) $t_nt_n^{-1}=t_n^{-1}t_n=1$; (ii) $t_n+t_n^{-1}$ is central; (iii) $t_0t_1t_2t_3 = q^{-1/2}$. In this paper, we display an $\hat{H}_q$-module structure for ${\bf W}$. For this module and up to affine transformation, (i) $t_0t_1+(t_0t_1)^{-1}$ acts as the adjacency matrix of $\Gamma$; (ii) $t_3t_0+(t_3t_0)^{-1}$ acts as the dual adjacency matrix of $\Gamma$ with respect to $C$; (iii) $t_1t_2+(t_1t_2)^{-1}$ acts as the dual adjacency matrix of $\Gamma$ with respect to $x$. To obtain our results we use the theory of Leonard systems.

Abstract:In this paper, the module-algebra structures of U-q(sl(m + 1)) = H(e(i), f(i), k(i)(+/- 1))(1 <= i <= m)., on the coordinate algebra of quantum vector spaces are studied. We denote the coordinate algebra of quantum n-dimensional vector space by A(q)(n). As our main result, first, we give a complete classification of module-algebra structures of U-p(sl(m + 1)) on A(q)(3) when k(i) is an element of Aut L(A(q)(3)) as actions on A(q)(3) for i = 1,...,m and m >= 2 and with the same method, on A(q)(2), all module-algebra structures of U-q(sl(m + 1)) are characterized. Lastly, the module-algebra structures of U-q(sl(m + 1)) on A(q)(n) are obtained for any n >= 4.
Association schemes and orthogonality graphs on anisotropic points of polar spaces

Abstract:In this paper, we study association schemes on the anisotropic points of classical polar spaces. Our main result concerns non-degenerate elliptic and hyperbolic quadrics in PG$(n,q)$ with $q$ odd. We define relations on the anisotropic points of such a quadric that depend on the type of line spanned by the points and whether or not they are of the same "quadratic type". This yields an imprimitive $5$-class association scheme. We calculate the matrices of eigenvalues and dual eigenvalues of this scheme.

Algebras Associated to Inverse Systems of Projective Schemes

Abstract:Artin, Tate and Van den Bergh initiated the field of noncommutative projective algebraic geometry by fruitfully studying geometric data associated to noncommutative graded algebras. More specifically, given a field $\mathbb K$ and a graded $\mathbb K$-algebra $A$, they defined an inverse system of projective schemes $\Upsilon_A = \{{\Upsilon_d(A)}\}$. This system affords an algebra, $\mathbf B(\Upsilon_A)$, built out of global sections, and a $\mathbb K$-algebra morphism $\tau: A \to \mathbf B(\Upsilon_A)$. We study and extend this construction. We define, for any natural number $n$, a category ${\tt PSys}^n$ of projective systems of schemes and a contravariant functor $\mathbf B$ from ${\tt PSys}^n$ to the category of associative $\mathbb K$-algebras. We realize the schemes ${\Upsilon_d(A)}$ as ${\rm Proj \ } {\mathbf U}_d(A)$, where ${\mathbf U}_d$ is a functor from associative algebras to commutative algebras. We characterize when the morphism $\tau: A \to \mathbf B(\Upsilon_A)$ is injective or surjective in terms of local cohomology modules of the ${\mathbf U}_d(A)$. Motivated by work of Walton, when $\Upsilon_A$ consists of well-behaved schemes, we prove a geometric result that computes the Hilbert series of $\mathbf B(\Upsilon_A)$. We provide many detailed examples that illustrate our results. For example, we prove that for some non-AS-regular algebras constructed as twisted tensor products of polynomial rings, $\tau$ is surjective or an isomorphism.

Abstract:Concrete two-set (module-like and algebra-like) algebraic structures are investigated from the viewpoint that the initial arities of all operations are arbitrary. Relations between operations arising from the structure definitions, however, lead to restrictions which determine their possible arity shapes and lead us to the partial arity freedom principle. In this manner, polyadic vector spaces and algebras, dual vector spaces, direct sums, tensor products and inner pairing spaces are reconsidered. As one application, elements of polyadic operator theory are outlined: multistars and polyadic analogs of adjoints, operator norms, isometries and projections are introduced, as well as polyadic C*-algebras, Toeplitz algebras and Cuntz algebras represented by polyadic operators. Another application is connected with number theory, and it is shown that congruence classes are polyadic rings of a special kind. Polyadic numbers are introduced (see Definition 6.16), and Diophantine equations over these polyadic rings are then considered. Polyadic analogs of the Lander-Parkin-Selfridge conjecture and Fermat's last theorem are formulated. For nonderived polyadic ring operations (on polyadic numbers) neither of these statements holds, and counterexamples are given. Finally, a procedure for obtaining new solutions to the equal sums of like powers equation over polyadic rings by applying Frolov's theorem to the Tarry-Escott problem is presented.

Abstract:Two sets of mutually commuting $q-$difference operators $x_i$ and $y_j$, $i,j=1, ...,N$ such that $x_i$ and $y_i$ generate a homomorphic image of the $q-$Onsager algebra for each $i$ are introduced. The common polynomial eigenfunctions of each set are found to be entangled product of elementary Pochhammer functions in $N$ variables and $N+3$ parameters. Under certain conditions on the parameters, they form two `dual' bases of polynomials in $N$ variables. The action of each operator with respect to its dual basis is block tridiagonal. The overlap coefficients between the two dual bases are expressed as entangled products of $q-$Racah polynomials and satisfy an orthogonality relation. The overlap coefficients between either one of these bases and the multivariable monomial basis are also considered. One obtains in this case entangled products of dual $q-$Krawtchouk polynomials. Finally, the `split' basis in which the two families of operators act as block bidiagonal matrices is also provided.

Two-Term Polynomial Identities

Abstract:We study algebras satisfying a two-term multilinear identity, namely one of the form $x_1\cdots x_n=qx_{\sigma(1)}\cdots x_{\sigma(n)}$, where $q$ is a parameter from the base field. We show that such algebras with $q=1$ and $\sigma$ not fixing~1 or~$n$ are eventually commutative in the sense that the equality $x_1\cdots x_k =x_{\tau(1)}\cdots x_{\tau(k)}$ holds for $k$ large enough and all permutations $\tau\in S_k$. Calling the minimal such~$k$ the degree of eventual commutativity, we prove that $k$ is never more than~$2n-3,$ and that this bound is sharp. For various natural examples, we prove that $k$ can be taken to be $n+1$ or $n+2$. In the case when $q\ne1$, we establish that the algebra must be nilpotent.

Abstract:Let $S_1=\{p_1,p_2,\cdots, p_l\}\subset\cc[z_1,z_2\cdots,z_n]$ be a set of quadratic forms such that $p_i=q_i^2$ where $\{q_i\}_{i=1}^l$ are linear forms. For $1\leq k\leq l$, let $S_k=\{p_{i_1}p_{i_2}\cdots p_{i_k}|1\leq i_1<i_2<\cdots<i_k\leq l\}$ be the set of $k$-products of distinct polynomials in $S_1$. We show somehow unexpectedly that linear independence of $S_1$ is equivalent to that of $S_k$ for $k=2$ and $3$ under certain rank conditions. Among technical treatments in the proof, of independent conceptual interest is a novel polynomial identity which elegantly incorporates quadratic forms and matrix determinants.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a field of characteristic $0$ and $k \geq 2$ be an integer. We prove that every $K$-linear bijection $f : K[X] \to K[X]$ strongly preserving the set of $k$-free polynomials (or the set of polynomials with a $k$-fold root in $K$) is a constant multiple of a $K$-algebra automorphism of $K[X]$, i.e., there are elements $a, c \in K^{\times}$, $b \in K$ such that $f(P)(X) = c P(a X + b)$. When $K$ is a number field or $K=\mathbb{R}$, we prove that similar statements hold when $f$ preserves the set of polynomials with a root in $K$.

Abstract:The so-called Sasaki projection was introduced by U. Sasaki on the lattice L(H) of closed linear subspaces of a Hilbert space H as a projection of L(H) onto a certain sublattice of L(H). Since L(H) is an orthomodular lattice, the Sasaki projection and its dual can serve as the logical connectives conjunction and implication within the logic of quantum mechanics. It was shown by the authors in a previous paper that these operations form a so-called adjoint pair. The natural question arises if this result can be extended also to lattices with a unary operation which need not be orthomodular or to other algebras with two binary and one unary operation. To show that this is possible is the aim of the present paper. We determine a variety of lattices with a unary operation where the Sasaki operations form an adjoint pair and we continue with so-called $\lambda$-lattices and certain classes of semirings. We show that the Sasaki operations have a deeper sense than originally assumed by their author and can be applied also outside the lattices of closed linear subspaces of a Hilbert space.

Abstract:We study algebraic complexity classes and their complete polynomials under \emph{homogeneous linear} projections, not just under the usual affine linear projections that were originally introduced by Valiant in 1979. These reductions are weaker yet more natural from a geometric complexity theory (GCT) standpoint, because the corresponding orbit closure formulations do not require the padding of polynomials. We give the \emph{first} complete polynomials for VF, the class of sequences of polynomials that admit small algebraic formulas, under homogeneous linear projections: The sum of the entries of the non-commutative elementary symmetric polynomial in 3 by 3 matrices of homogeneous linear forms. Even simpler variants of the elementary symmetric polynomial are hard for the topological closure of a large subclass of VF: the sum of the entries of the non-commutative elementary symmetric polynomial in 2 by 2 matrices of homogeneous linear forms, and homogeneous variants of the continuant polynomial (Bringmann, Ikenmeyer, Zuiddam, JACM '18). This requires a careful study of circuits with arity-3 product gates.
