Abstract:The classification problem of $P$- and $Q$-polynomial association schemes has been one of the central problems in algebraic combinatorics. Generalizing the concept of $P$- and $Q$-polynomial association schemes to multivariate cases, namely to consider higher rank $P$- and $Q$-polynomial association schemes, has been tried by some authors, but it seems that so far there were neither very well-established definition nor results. Very recently, Bernard, Crampé, d'Andecy, Vinet, and Zaimi [arXiv:2212.10824], defined bivariate $P$-polynomial association schemes, as well as bivariate $Q$-polynomial association schemes. In this paper, we study these concepts and propose a new modified definition concerning a general monomial order, which is more general and more natural and also easy to handle. We prove that there are many interesting families of examples of multivariate $P$- and/or $Q$-polynomial association schemes.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the problem of classifying P - and Q - polynomial association schemes in algebraic combinatorics. Specifically, the paper aims to generalize the concepts of P - and Q - polynomial association schemes to the multivariable case, that is, to consider P - and Q - polynomial association schemes of higher rank. Although some authors have attempted this generalization before, it seems that there are no very clear definitions or results so far. Recently, Bernard, Crampé, d’Andecy, Vinet, and Zaimi proposed the definitions of bivariate P - polynomial association schemes and bivariate Q - polynomial association schemes. On this basis, the author of this paper studied these concepts and proposed a new modified definition regarding general monomial orders, which makes the definition more general, natural and easier to handle. In addition, the author proved that there are many interesting examples of multivariable P - and/or Q - polynomial association schemes. The main purposes of the paper are twofold: 1. Re - examine the concepts of multivariable P - polynomial (and Q - polynomial) association schemes, give a more general definition, and correct the original definition proposed by Bernard et al. The new definition avoids using (α, β) to represent the type of bivariate P - polynomial association schemes, thus making the situation more transparent and also making the generalization to the multivariable (> 2) case straightforward. 2. Discuss many new explicit examples of multivariable P - polynomial (and Q - polynomial) association schemes. The author hopes to further discuss these examples in subsequent papers. Through these works, the paper aims to provide a new framework for the study of multivariable P - and Q - polynomial association schemes and show rich examples under this new definition.
